• Declarative View Objects (VOs) for better ADF performance

  Just got back from ODTUG's kscope13 conference which had a lot of good deep ADF content. In one of my session I ran out of time to do one of my demos, so I wanted to share it here instead. This is a demo of how Declarative View Objects can increase your application's performance. For those who are not familiar with declarative VOs, those are VOs that don't actually specify a hard coded query. Instead ADF creates their query at runtime, and it does it based on the data that is requested in your UI layer. This can be a huge saver of both DB resources and network resources. More in the documentation. Here is a quick example that shows you how using such a VO can automatically switch to a simpler SQL instead of a complex join when needed. (note while I demo with 11.1.2.* the feature is there in 11.1.1.* versions also). The demo also shows you how you can monitor the SQL that ADF BC issues to the database using the WebLogic logging feature in JDeveloper. As a side note, I would have loved to see more ADF developers attending Kscope. This demo was part of the "ADF intro" track at Kscope, In the advanced ADF track you would have been treated to a full tuning session about ADF with lots of other tips. Consider attending Kscope next year - it is going to be in Seattle this time.

My question is on the server side do I need to match BOTH etag and If-Modified-Since before I send 304. Or Should I just look at etag and send 304 if etag is a match. In this case I am ignoring If-Modified-Since .

  Hello, I am moving an e-commerce site to a new server. All has been successful and its time to change the DNS for the domain. It's a relatively popular site and I fear that during propagation orders will be split between the old database and the new one. The databases do contain content that is dependent of the server it is on (Cache path, upload directory, etc.) so I can't just point the old site to the new database. Are there any solutions to this without any of the sites going down. Thanks in advance

• XBMC DVB-T and Played Video filling screen

  I have a small PC running as an XBMC attached to a Samsung le37m87bd. The PC isn't powerful enough to output a full HD 1080 image at 1920x1080 which is the TVs native resolution (about every 1/2 a second things go extra fast, I assume skipping frames), so I want to reduce this. Annoyingly, the TV does not support any other widescreen resolutions. (720 etc) If I use a a 4:3 image, the TV stretches it to be the 16:9, however, all 16:9 content is stretched sideways as XBMC is sending out a 4:3 image with a 16:9 image inside. Is there anyway I can force XBMC to compensate for this, ie stretch vertically so that black bars are removed, but not stretched horizontally?

  In my work as a developer I sometimes find myself sending details emails with screenshots to illustrate some point or problem. The content of these screenshots is often text. So knowing that PNG is much better at handle compression of images with text, I save my screenshots as PNG and insert them into my email. However whenever I check my sent mail, the images are clearly being sent as a JPG because they look horribly compressed. I'm using Outlook 2003 as my email program. Is there some setting I can change to make Outlook send inline images as PNGs?

  I googled over this topic but couldn't find what I was looking for... the following "happend" to me: I had my files stored on a NTFS-USB Harddisk, because of space problems I moved them to an ext3 system....somehow the filename (content is still ok as far as I saw) encoding screwed up....my files look like the following now: Kküken <--- should have an "ü" Jäger <--- should be an "ä" Zwölf <--- should be an "ö" fünfte <-- should be an "ü" etc .... These are just examples, but already give me my first question Why has the "ü" two different representations? (Maybe I screw up, before I screw up and now I have a mixing of x different encoding-layers? :) ) I tried the following command: convmv -r -f UTF-8 -t ISO-8859-1 * This command work for some files (for example Zwölf) but not for all: iso-8859-1 doesn't cover all needed characters for: "fünfte" So Iguess it must be another encoding - but which? How can I find out this? And is there any way that I can still fix all of this?

  On my Linux box, in bash, I have access to a "double root" folder denoted by two forward slashes: tomas:~ $ cd / tomas:/ $ ls bin/ cdrom@ ... tomas:/ $ cd // tomas:// $ ls bin/ cdrom@ ... The content of the folder and its subfolder is identical to the "normal" single slash root. The double slash does not go away when I access its subfolders. The annomaly does not repeat itself with three or more slashes; these are simple synonyms for the root: tomas:// $ cd home/tomas tomas://home/tomas $ cd /// tomas:/ $ cd //// tomas:/ $ What kindof place is it? Is it a bug? Can anyone explain the annomaly?

• Tips on Managing Podcast Subscriptions

  I listen to a silly number of technical podcasts. I listen to enough of them that it is literally impossible to keep up. I nearly gave up and started dropping feeds from my subscription list when I heard Craig Shoemaker talk about his Polymorphic Podcast fast feed. The idea is he provides the same content at a higher speed so you can listen to his complete show in 3/4th the time. I tried it out with his recent jQuery Secrets with Dave Ward interview and I was shocked with the feed quality. It was a super clear, understandable conversation which only took a fraction of the time commitment. I experimented a bit and played the normal recording at 2x speed on my iPhone and the quality was once again just fine. But now I'm saving half of the time. I'm curious as to how you might manage your podcast subscriptions. Can you offer any tips or advice on how to get the best bang for your buck when it comes to technical podcast listening?

• Apache proxy is modifying the HTTP status code

  I am using Apache as a proxy frontend for a Java web application, which is deployed on WebSphere. The web application is using custom status codes (55x) to signal specific errors to the clients. When accessing the web application directly through the WebSphere HTTP listener, everything works as expected, but when these requests are proxied through an Apache load balancer, the status codes are modified by Apache and replaced with a generic 500 error code (internal server error). In Apache's access.log, the correct status code is logged: <IP> - - [11/Nov/2011:17:24:53 +0100] "POST <URL> HTTP/1.1" 551 36 But the actual response received by the client starts like this (logged with tcpdump): HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error ... Followed by the real status code in the response content: ... Error 551: Berichteter Fehler: 551 ... Is there an obvious reason for this behaviour or does someone have a suggestion on how to modify the Apache configuration to forward the "real" status code instead of 500?

The directive "Minimize request overhead" requires static content (images, js, css, etc.) on a static server (ie cookieless): https://developers.google.com/speed/docs/best-practices/request I do not want to buy a new server and I was thinking of just setting a directory of my site without cookie with htaccess www.mysite.com/static/.htaccess Header unset Cookie Header unset Set-Cookie I do not know if it can be problematic. Looking on google it seems that no one ever has adopted this type of solution, so I think that it is incorrect. • is it really necessary to run Apache as a front-end to Glassfish/JBoss/Tomcat?

  I'm primarily a Java developer, and I come to you with a question that straddles the divide between developers and sysadmins. Years ago, when it was a novel thing to run Tomcat as an app server, it was customary to front it with Apache. As I understand it, this was done because: Java was considered "slow", and it was helpful to have Apache serve static content directly. Tomcat couldn't listen to ports 80/443 unless run as root, which was dangerous. Java is no longer considered slow, and I doubt adding Apache to the mix will actually help speed things up. As for the ports issue, there are probably simpler ways to connect app servers to ports 80/443 these days. So my question is- is there really any benefit to fronting Java Webapps with Apache these days? If so, is Apache still the way to go? Should I look at Nginx? Instead of Tomcat I'm using Glassfish, if that matters.

• Do out-of-office replies get sent to the return-path header?

  I always thought that the return-path header was used for bounced messages, so I have my email newsletter software setup to unsubscribe anyone whose email address replies back to the return-path email address. But recently some users started telling me their out-of-office replies where unsubscribing them. Do out-of-office replies get sent to the return-path on some email servers? I could check all emails to that address and see if they have the "message/delivery-status" content-type in one of the parts, but I wasn't sure if this was necessary.

• Hosting multiple sites on a single webapp in tomcat

  Scenario: I have a website - www.mydomain.com. Registered users will be given the choice of getting a permanent url to their account on mydomain.com as a subdomain like (username.mydomain.com) or they can opt to have their own domain like www.userdomain.com. So the user can access his/her account through the subdomain URL or their own hostname and the request should be forwarded to a specific url on mydomain.com. For example: xyz.mydomain.com or www.xyz.com should give the user account from www.mydomain.com/webapp/account?id=xyz. The user should be completely unaware about where the content is coming from. Setup: My website is running as a webapp in tomcat 5.5.28 with apache as the web server. I am using a VPS which means I have control over all the configuration files (apache, tomcat and dns server). Can you tell me what are the configurations needed to achieve the above scenario??

  Inline images is a technique that, instead of referring to an external URL, includes all of the image’s content in the HTML itself, in the form of a Base64-encoded string. It avoids a second browser request, at the cost of making the HTML page slightly heavier and not using cache. Not all browsers support it, but current versions of IE, Firefox and Chrome do. • Java web app, with plugin framework and ability to connect to source for updates

  I've searched all around for some good sources, but either have been searching for the wrong keywords, or I'm just missing something. I'm looking to redevelop a web app I've been using for some time now. Many parts are out of date, and we're constantly throwing in little hacks to attempt to give it new life. So what I'd like to do is re-engineer it from the ground up, built on some sort of plug-in framework. Before I continue, I'm more or less an intermediate Java programmer. In some ways, I'm hoping to use this project as a big learning experience. I've read a lot about OSGi, and it seems that's the most complete framework. Ideally, I would like an end result web app which I can run one instance as my hosting environment, and other instances can connect to it to grab new and updated plug-ins. Eventually I'll want to lock down these plug-ins based on some undecided criteria of who can get them (basically some will simply be updates, others will provide new functionality and should be "purchased" through an external system). But that will probably be handled in a later phase. There should be an administration view for managing bundles in a hot environment (looking to avoid having to restart the server for an update). I know all these things are possible, I'm just trying to find some good resources for reference. All the OSGi tutorials I'm finding seem to be too simplistic. If anyone here can guide me in the right direction on any or all of the items I'm looking for, it would be much appreciated.   Hi Everyone -I just wanted to give you a heads-up on some recent actions that we had to take regarding someone who tried to cheat on a test.Just last week, we had a candidate who was bold enough to try to take screen-shots during the exam using his cell phone. Of course this is completely against Oracle Certification Program policy. This candidate's exam was immediately stopped, and the candidate was ejected from the testing center.Of course it doesn't end there. This candidate was also suspended permanently from the Oracle Certification Program, and all of his previous certifications were revoked. He is no longer eligible to participate in the program. Unfortunately - if this candidate works for an Oracle partner company, then his company will also likely become aware of his indiscretion - particularly when they request validation of his certification.Although this particular candidate was blatantly involved in content theft, any type of cheating incident is very unfortunate. It erodes the value of the certification credentials, and hurts everyone involved.
