• iPlanet Authentication provider

  Good day. I have stepped into project that requires a server migration that would change the means of authentication for our CAC/PKI SSL enabled website. We are using iPlanet 7 and Oracle Directory Server Enterprise 7 as our LDAP server. The situation is that the site is still CAC/PKI enabled, but at the firewall. The information we want to authenticate against is now in the http header. How do I configure iPlanet and LDAP to authenticate against the header instead of SSL? Thanks. Edit, Can this be done with IIS keeping the Directory Server EE LDAP in tact or is the ACL iPlanet only?

• How do I upgrade Django 1.3.1 to 1.4? Any tips, tutorials, or warnings?

  Django 1.4 was recently released. Almost all the information about Django 1.4 is in the release note, but I didn't see anything about how to upgrade. Should I just remove the django folder inside Python's site-packges and download 1.4? I think I originally installed Django using emerge and yum but I'm not sure if the package management systems are up-to-date with Django 1.4 yet. That might be ok on my server instance (Gentoo Linux), but on my local instance I am using virtualenvwrapper (on Mac OS 10.7), so maybe I want to create a new Python virtual environment for Djago 1.4. Or maybe not since I don't really care about backward compatibility with 1.3.1.

• What's new at Oracle in Gamification?

  It's been a crazy few weeks in Apps UX.  We are actively working on some gamification designs in now 4 different application product areas, as well as supporting some teams in other areas of Oracle.  Since that gets to be a pretty diverse group with a lot of resources and ideas, we've started a group in the Oracle Social Network on Gamification at Oracle.  That's limited to internal users at Oracle, but if you are interested in joining,  ping me directly for more information at [email protected]. We're planning another design jam like we did here at Oracle in May and at the Enterprise Gamification Forum in San Diego in September.  This time, we're taking the show to the UK, and hosting it with a group of customers on the Oracle Usability Advisory Board.  It should be a great event!   We're also actively designing some gamified flows which we'll be testing with users at the UKOUG to see what our customers think about some of our gamification ideas. We're looking at more feedback opportunities.  Internally, we surveyed 444 folks within Oracle about gamification and we'll be posting some of our findings on that here soon.  I'll be posting a blog on gamification for our customers at useableapps.oracle.com  in the next few weeks and I'll cross-post to here when it comes out.  So even though it's been quiet on this blog, we are busy and I'm hoping to push out more content in the next few weeks!  Would love to know what's most interesting to the folks reading so if there's something you especially want to see, feel free to comment or email me about it.

• fsck: FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED after each check with -c, why?

  I use a script to partition and format CF cards (connected with a USB card writer) in an automated way. After the main process I check the card again with fsck. To check bad blocks I also tried the '-c' switch, but I always get a return value != 0 and the message "FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED" (see below). I get the same result when checking the very same drive several times... Does anyone know why a) the file system is modified at all and b) why this seems to happen every time I check and not only in case of an error (like bad blocks)? • Mount encrypted hfs in ubuntu

  I try to mount an encrypted hfs+ partition in ubuntu. An older post described quite good how to do it, but lacks the information how to use encrypted partitions. What I found so far is: # install required packages sudo apt-get install hfsprogs hfsutils hfsplus loop-aes-utils # try to mount it mount -t hfsplus -o encryption=aes-256 /dev/xyz /mount/xyz But once I run this I get the following error: Error: Password must be at least 20 characters. So I tried to type it in twice, but that results in this: ioctl: LOOP_SET_STATUS: Invalid argument, requested cipher or key (256 bits) not supported by kernel Any suggestions? Thx Edit: One thing I'm not sure about is whether I use the right password. My assumption is that it is my default one for these situations. But I'm not sure whether Max OSX choose another password (internally) for that.

• XNA on the TechNet Wiki

  Many months ago I came across an interesting Microsoft website, the TechNet Wiki, when I was looking for information about something that I can’t even remember anymore. I noticed at the time that its section on gaming technologies was sparse and even exchanged a few emails with one of the friendly Microsoft employees who contributes there regularly about some ideas I had for the site. I seem to recall mentioning my intentions to add some articles on XNA when I found the time but between one thing and another it seemed like I was busy from the end of last Summer straight through ‘til now. Yesterday I came across the TechNet Wiki link in my miscellaneous links collection and remembered my intentions many months ago. I decided that adding XNA pages to it would make a nice project to work on while taking breaks from my other projects. So I wrote my first two articles for it: XNA Framework Overview and Content Pipeline Overview. I hope to add more in the coming days and weeks. I’d be delighted if some of my fellow XNA enthusiasts out there joined in, time permitting. Anyone else who’d like to add a page or two on a topic area you’re familiar with, this seems like a great opportunity to contribute to the community and help build a nice knowledge base to benefit all of us who are always interested in learning something new!

• How do I properly check if a program is a virus/trojan in VMware?

  How I should check if a program is a virus in VMware? Some programs I do need admin ability to install and it makes sense. But how do I know if it's doing more than I want? Some thoughts are: How many processes open when I launch the application What is added to the startup tab in msconfig If any services are added. That's pretty much all my ideas. Even if it does something I recognize I wouldn't know if it's necessary or not. What are some rule of thumb? -Edit- What about registries, can I use that information to help? Maybe have a scanner tell me if the application I just used has messed with sections (like bootup) it shouldn't have?

• Thoughts (on Windows Phone 7) from the MVP Summit

  Last week I packed off to Redmond, WA for my annual pilgrimage to Microsoft's MVP Summit. I'll spare you all the silly taunting about knowing stuff I can't talk about, etc... and just get to the point. I'm a XNA/DirectX MVP, an ASP Insider and a Languages (VB) Insider... so I actually had access to a pretty broad spectrum of information over the last week. Most of my time was focused on Windows Phone 7 related sessions, and while I can't dig deep into specifics, I can say that Microsoft is definitely not out of the fight for Mobile. The things I saw tell me that Microsoft is listening and paying attention to feedback, looking at what works & what doesn't and they are working their collective asses off to close the gap between Google and Apple. Anyone who has been in this industry for a while can tell you Microsoft does their best work when they are the underdog. They are currently behind, and have a lot of work ahead of them, but this is when they bring all their resources together to solve a problem. After the week I spent in Redmond, and the feedback I heard from other MVPs, and the technological previews I saw... I feel confident in betting heavily on Microsoft to pull this off.

• problem with using polish keyboard with synergy 1.4.2

  I installed synergy on Windows 7 as server and on Windows Vista as client. On both I can use polish keyboard using local keyboard. When I am using remote keyboard via synergy polish characters are not working (I mean in example S + Alt Gr or S + left Alt + left ctrl) I've used synergy about 1 year ago and I cannot recall that kind of problem so I think the problem is only in current version. Searching through your web site and googled I found only identical problem 5 years ago with information that it was solved. Please help me to sort it out.

• SEO with duplicate content

  I have a nature photography site with multiple types of photo galleries. Each photo and associated caption on my site appears in several galleries. For instance, a photo of a goldfinch that was taken on a trip to New Mexico in 2008 will appear in the "goldfinch.php" gallery, in the "finches.php" gallery, and in the "New_Mexico_2008.php" gallery. This duplication is useful for my site visitors - User A may want to see goldfinch photos, whereas User B wants to see photos from New Mexico - but I am concerned about the SEO implications. The typical suggestions to deal with duplicate content, such as 301 redirects and canonical tags, probably won't work in this case, because the page content is substantially different (ranging from ~1% to ~90% duplication, depending on the specific example chosen). The obvious solution to me would be to edit robots.txt to only allow search engines to crawl one type of gallery - for instance, if they crawled only the galleries organized by species(e.g. goldfinch.php), all the photos on my site would be found exactly once. However, the Google content guidelines recommend against blocking crawler access to duplicate information. Should I go ahead and use robots.txt anyway? Or is there a better solution?

• Update saved password for basic authentication using a script

  I have a website that uses basic authentication as described on this webpage. Each of the computers I manage have the password saved in their browser. There is only one username and password for this. After someone logs in to the site this way, they are presented with their individual username and password prompt as part of the web page. The purpose of the initial username/password is to discourage non-technical employees that aren't supposed to be using the page from even viewing it. So far, when we've had to change this password, I've manually gone to each computer and updated the saved password. I'm writing a startup script to configure other aspects of these systems so that I can maintain them easier. I'd like to be able to update the saved password via this script. The operating system running on these machines is Windows XP SP3 and the browsers they're using to access this site are IE8 and IE9. How can I update the saved basic authentication information for a website via a script?

• Ubuntu installed along side Win 8 but not shown in boot

  Actually the question says it all, but let me tell you what I did, so u may find exactly what might have went wrong: I have Win 8 installed on 500 GB HDD. SO I shrunk it four times for: partition 1 - the original partition containing Win 8 sys (118GB) partition 2 - NTFS formatted for my data (188GB) partition 3 - NTFS formatted for my data (100GB) partition 4 - NTFS formatted for Linux distro 1 (I reformatted it to ext4 during Ubuntu installation) (25GB) partition 5 - NTFS formatted for Linux distro 1 (21GB) So now I booted Ubuntu from USB (created from ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64.iso) and deleted last two partitions 4 and 5 to create: partition 1 - ext4 where I installed Ubuntu (25GB) partition 2 - Swap (4GB) partition 3 - unallocated space, not formatted yet (17GB) Ubuntu installation said it installed successfully and that I have to restart to boot in Ubuntu. But when I restart Windows 8 auto booted - there was no dual boot. • Is there a free tool/package that can monitor web traffic and display URLS accessed? [closed]

  I couldn't find a similar question but then maybe I am searching for the wrong terms. A few years ago I used a router like device, I'm pretty sure it was a SonicWall, that did this on a clients site. Basically all traffic would be routed through this device and it allowed the manager/administrator to inspect web usage of the workers, determine how often certain resources were accessed and block them if necessary (much like content filter). It showed reports based on domain name reached etc. Facebbok.com, Bebo.com and so on. It also displayed the usual IP traffic information etc. it was a UTM also. I have tried Endian firewall, with it's NTOP install, but I don't think that will show URLs browsed. Maybe I just haven't found it in NTOP yet? I need this to troubleshoot connection and traffic issue at my home, with about twenty devices/users so didn't want to buy a dedicated solution and have spare hardware to use a community product.

• Upgrade to 0.25, files served to uPNP devices cannot play

  I have a Sony BDP-S390 bluray & network player. I upgraded my Myth server to 0.25. When I browse to the Myth server, and try to play a recording, I get an error message about the file not being payable in the player. Interestingly, the files that i have recorded, and the videos that I have loaded into my Video volume group are .mpg or .mp4. The player shows the filetype that it thinks the file is in it's list, and it claims that these files are AVI files, however none of them are. They are all .mp4 or .mpg files. Thinking that that was just an optical illusion, I went ahead and tried to play a file, but I get an error about the file not being playable. First of all, is there something that I need to do to make the uPNP server know about different filetypes? Is it reporting AVI because it hasn't been told about MPG or MP4? Second, I'd like to help out some more here and collect some logging about the uPNP server in the myth server. I cant seem to find information on how to turn on logging, and there is no mythbackend settings file int /etc/default. Thanks very much.

• A fix for the design time error in MVVM Light V4.1

  For those of you who installed V4.1 of MVVM Light and created a project for Windows Phone 8, you will have noticed an error showing up in the design surface (either in Visual Studio designer, or in Expression Blend). The error says: “Could not load type ‘System.ComponentModel.INotifyPropertyChanging’ from assembly ‘mscorlib.extensions’” with additional information about version numbers. The error is caused by an incompatibility between versions of System.Windows.Interactivity. Because this assembly is strongly named, any version incompatibility is causing the kind of error shown here (for an interesting discussion on the strong naming issue, see this thread on Codeplex). I managed to resolve the issue for Windows Phone 8 and will publish a cleaned up installer next week. In the mean time, in order to allow you to continue development, please follow the steps: Download the new DLLs zip package (MVVMLight_V4_1_25_WP8). Right click on the Zip file and select Properties from the context menu. Press the “Unblock” button (if available) and then OK. Right click again on the zip package and select “Extract all…”. Select a known location for the new DLLs. Open the MVVM Light project with the design time error in Visual Studio 2012. Open the References folder in the Solution Explorer. Select the following DLLs: GalaSoft.MvvmLight.dll, GalaSoft.MvvmLight.Extras.dll, Microsoft.Practices.ServiceLocation.dll and System.Windows.Interactivity.dll. Press “delete” and confirm to remove the DLLs from your project. Right click on References and select Add Reference from the context menu. Browse to the folder with the new DLLs. Select the four new DLLs and press OK. Rebuild your application, and open it again in Blend or in the Visual Studio designer. The error should be gone now. In the next few days, as time allows, I will publish a new MSI containing a fixed version of the DLLs as well as a few other improvements. I am pleased to say that it incorporates the generic version of a fix, I originated that allows projects including Crystal Reports to be documented.Here is the relevant passage from the help file:"The default configuration for MRefBuilder has been updated to ignore the Crystal Reports licensing assembly (BusinessObjects.Licensing.KeycodeDecoder) if it fails to get resolved. This assembly does not appear to be available and ignoring it prevents projects that include Crystal Reports assemblies from failing and being unbuildable."There are many other fixes. • Extracting Frustum Planes (Hartmann & Gribbs method)

  I have been grappling with the Hartmann/Gribbs method of extracting the Frustum planes for some time now, with little success. There doesn't appear to be a "definitive" topic or tutorial which combines all the necessary information, so perhaps this can be it First of all, I am attempting to do this in C# (For Playstation Mobile), using OpenGL style Column-Major matrices in a Right-Handed coordinate system but obviously the math will work in any language. My projection matrix has a Near plane at 1.0, Far plane at 1000, FOV of 45.0 and Aspect of 1.7647. I want to get my planes in World-Space, so I build my frustum from the View-Projection Matrix (that's projectionMatrix * viewMatrix). The view Matrix is the inverse of the camera's World-Transform. The problem is; regardless of what I tweak, I can't seem to get a correct frustum. I think that I may be missing something obvious. Focusing on the Near and Far planes for the moment (since they have the most obvious normals when correct), when my camera is positioned looking down the negative z-axis, I get two planes facing in the same direction, rather than opposite directions. If i strafe my camera left and right (while still looking along the z axis) the x value of the normal vector changes. Obviously, something is fundamentally wrong here; I just can't figure out what - maybe someone here can?

• apache not starting in vagrant vm

  I used Puphpet.com to create a Vagrant VM to be used for web development. The problem I am having is that the VM cannot start apache on boot. $ sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 start * Starting web server apache2 * * The apache2 configtest failed. Output of config test was: apache2: Syntax error on line 36 of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: Syntax error on line 1 of /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/authz_default.load: Cannot load /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_authz_default.so into server: /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_authz_default.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Action 'configtest' failed. The Apache error log may have more information. the system is ubuntu 12, not sure what modifications I have to make to the puppet config to fix the problem.

• Eclipse: Help with EGit

  I want to be able to use a version control system. Although Eclipse comes with CVS, I think it's better that I use a distributed version control system, such as GIT. I was pretty much sold after reading this article. Anyway, I installed EGit and followed this guide on how to set it up. However, I ran in to a few problems: Adding .project and .classpath inside .gitignore did not seem to work. When I try to open a committed file, it throws an error, saying: "IO error reading Git blob [...]" What am I doing wrong? If more information is needed, please specify and I will give.

• How do you keep SOA DRY?

  In our organization, we've shifted to a more "service oriented architecture". To give an example, let's assume we need to retrieve a "Quote" object. This quote has a shipper, a consignee, phone numbers, contacts, email addresses, and other location information. In other words, a Quote object is made up of many other objects. So, it seems like it would make sense to make a "Quote Retrieval Service". In our situation, we've accomplished this by creating a .NET solution and writing the service. The service API looks something like this (in pseudo-code): Function GetQuote(String ID) Returns Quote So, so far so good. Now, when this service is consumed, to keep things "de-coupled", we are creating essentially a duplicate of the Quote object and mapping from the QuoteService version of the Quote into the consumer's version of the Quote. In many cases, these classes will have the exact same properties. So, if the Quote service is consumed by 5 other applications, we would have 6 definitions of what a "Quote" is. One for each consumer, and one for the service. This feels wrong. I thought code was supposed to be DRY, but it seems like our method of SOA is forcing us to create tons of duplicated class definitions. What are we doing wrong, or is the code duplication just a "necessary evil" of SOA?
