Extract High Quality Icons from Files Using a Free Tool

If you need to extract an icon from a program file or other type of file (such as .dll files), there are many free tools available that make the task easy. However, very few will extract high quality icon images from the files. Most free icon extraction tools will extract smaller icon image sizes, such as 16×16, 32×32, or 48×48 pixels. Some icons come in larger sizes, such as icons used in Windows. There is a free, small utility, called BeCyIconGrabber, that allows you to view and save icons and cursors of any size contained in .exe, .dll, .icl, .ocx, .cpl, .src, .ico, and .cur files. You can save the extracted icons individually as a .png file, .bmp file, .ico file, or .cur file, or in groups within resource libraries, i.e., .dll or .icl files. UI message passing programming paradigm

I recently (about two months ago) read an article that explained some user interface paradigm that I can't remember the name of and I also can't find the article anymore. The paradigm allows for decoupling the user interface and backend through message passing (via some queueing implementation). So each user action results in a message being pased to the backend. The user interface is then updated to inform the user that his request is being processed. The assumption is that a user interface is stale by definition. When you read data from some store into memory, it is stale because another transaction may be updating the same data already. If you assume this, it makes no sense to try to represent the 'current' database state in the user interface (so the delay introduced by passing messages to a backend doesn't matter). If I remember correctly, the article also mentioned a read-optimized data store for rendering the user interface. The article assumed a high-traffic web application. A primary reason for using a message queue communicating with the backend is performance: returning control to the user as soon as possible. Updating backend stores is handled by another process and eventually these changes also become visible to the user. I hope I have explained accurately enough what I'm looking for. If someone can provide some pointers to what I'm looking for, thanks very much in advance.

Disable the Old Adobe Flash Plugin in Google Chrome

If you’ve just updated to the Dev or Beta release of Google Chrome, you might have noticed that a special version of Adobe Flash is now integrated into the default distribution of Chrome. But what about your old plug-in? As it turns out, the old plug-in is generally still installed… but you can easily disable Chrome plug-ins in the latest version, so let’s get to work. Disable the Extra Flash Plug-in Head over to about:plugins and look through the list—you should notice two Shockwave Flash plugins. The first one should be in your Google Chrome installation folder, and has the filename gcswf32.dll. This is the NEW one, so don’t disable it! If you keep scrollling down, you’ll see the old one, with the file name NPSWF32.dll. This is the OLD plugin, and you can safely disable it. Of course, if you only use Chrome you could just completely uninstall Adobe Flash from your system by heading into Control Panel’s Uninstall Programs screen, and then finding and uninstalling Adobe Flash Player Plugin. The ActiveX version is for Internet Explorer. We’ve not done any testing to see if the old Flash plugin is even still active or not, but may as well disable it just to be sure, right? Watson Ties Against Human Jeopardy Opponents

In January we showed you a video of Waton in a practice round against Jeopardy champions Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. Last night they squared off in a real round of Jeopardy with Watson in a tie with Rutter. Watson held his own against the two champions leveraging the 90 IBM Power 750 servers, 2,880 processors, and the 16TB of memory driving him to his full advantage. It was impressive to watch the round unfold and to see where Watson shined and where he faltered. Check out the video below to footage of Watson in training and then in action on Jeopardy. Learning Objective-C for iPad/iPhone/iPod Development

I am learning how to write apps for the iPad/iPhone/iPod! Why, well several reasons. One reason, I have 5 devices in my house on the platform. I had an iPad and iPhone, Michelle has an iPhone, and each of the kids have iPod Touches. They are excellent devices for life management, entertainment, and learning. I am amazed at how well the kids pick up on it and how much it effects the way they learn. My two year old knows how to use it better than any other device we own and she is learning new words and letters so quickly. Because of this saturation at home, it would be fun to write some apps my family could use. Some games to bring the hobby of development back into my life. Second reason is we want to have a Geekswithblogs app for the iPhone and iPad. We are not sure if it is purely informational (blog posts and tweets) or if members want to be able to publish from the app. Creating a blog editor would be tough stuff, but could be just the right challenge. There are so many more reasons, but the last one that really makes me excited is that it is a new domain of development where I get excited when I think about writing apps. That excitement level where I want to see if there are User Groups and if we are just watching TV, to break out the MBP and start working on it. That excitement level where I could really read a development book cover to cover and not just use as a reference. I really do like this feeling. Who knows how long this will last and I am definitely not leaving .NET. Microsoft software will always be my main focus, but for the time, my hobby is changing and I am getting excited about development again. Can defect containment metrics be readily applied at an organizational level when there is only a consistant organizational process framework?

Defect containment metrics, such as total defect containment effectiveness (TDCE) and phase containment effectiveness (PCE), can be used to give a good indicator of the quality of the process. TDCE captures the defects that are captured at some point between requirements and the release of a product into the field, indicating the overall effectiveness of the entire process to find and remove defects. PCE provides more detail at each phase of the software development life cycle and how the defect detection and removal techniques are working. Applying these metrics makes sense at a level where you have a well-defined process and methodology for product development, often a project. However, some organizations provide a process framework that is tailored at the project level. This process framework would include the necessary guidance for meeting certifications (ISO9001, CMMI), practices for incorporating known good techniques (agile methods, Lean, Six Sigma), and requirements for legal or regulatory reasons. However, the specific details of how to gather requirements, design the system, produce the software, conduct test, and release are left to the product development teams. Is there any effective way to apply defect containment metrics at an organizational level when only a process framework exists at the organizational level? If not, what might be some ideas for metrics that can be distilled from each project (each using a tailored process that fits into the organizational process framework) that captures defect containment metrics to discuss the ability of the process to find and remove defects? The end goal of such a metric would be to consolidate the defect containment practices of a large number of ongoing projects and report to management. The target audience would be people in roles such as the chief software engineer and the chief engineer (of all engineering disciplines) for the organization. Although project specific data would be available, the idea is to produce something that quantifies the general effectiveness of all tailored processes across all ongoing projects. I would suspect that this data would also be presented as part of CMMI, ISO, or similar audits to demonstrate process quality.

Grub options are not visible on booting on Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite running Ubuntu 14.04

I've managed to install Ubuntu 14.04 on my new Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite ultrabook. After updating some configuratiosn in the UEFI installation was very easy. The only questions and issue I believe I'm still experience is when booting. I believe when the laptop would be displaying the grub boot options I see the following. There is a black screen with a purple border of 10px around the screen. I'd like to know how I can update my system so that I see the grub boot manager. Related to this question How do I run qemu with 64bit processor on a 64bit machine?, I'm trying to run latest ubuntu 11.10 64bit distribution under Ubuntu 11.04 32 bit using qemu on a core2duo (64 bit cpu) machine, using following qemu parameters with no success. Error under qemu: "This kernel required an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropiate for your CPU" Isn't qemu suppose to emulate a 64 bit machine? When is type testing OK?

Assuming a language with some inherent type safety (e.g., not JavaScript): Given a method that accepts a SuperType, we know that in most cases wherein we might be tempted to perform type testing to pick an action: public void DoSomethingTo(SuperType o) { if (o isa SubTypeA) { o.doSomethingA() } else { o.doSomethingB(); } } We should usually, if not always, create a single, overridable method on the SuperType and do this: public void DoSomethingTo(SuperType o) { o.doSomething(); } ... wherein each subtype is given its own doSomething() implementation. The rest of our application can then be appropriately ignorant of whether any given SuperType is really a SubTypeA or a SubTypeB. Wonderful. But, we're still given is a-like operations in most, if not all, type-safe languages. And that seems suggests a potential need for explicit type testing. So, in what situations, if any, should we or must we perform explicit type testing? Forgive my absent mindedness or lack of creativity. I know I've done it before; but, it was honestly so long ago I can't remember if what I did was good! And in recent memory, I don't think I've encountered a need to test types outside my cowboy JavaScript.

I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my HP dv6-1245 dx notebook and I do not have any wifi (it worked perfectly in windows vista and 7). I have followed a lot of instructions found on net but still not able to get Internet. Ubuntu 12.04 + Raid0 + Windows 7 not loading

please someone help me.... (Sorry for my english) Hi, I have a Pc with 2 Hd (1Tb each) on Raid0. I had a Windows 7 64bits working for several months. When I installed the Windows I let a 100Gb partition empty to install Ubuntu someday. I was using Linux on a Virtualbox, but this week I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 in this 100Gb partition. I used the Ubuntu alternate cd, because the 'normal' cd was giving me trouble with the Raid0. The grub installation always reported a error. After a lot of work I found that I nedded to install grub on partition /dev/mapper/isw_chjbfeec_DougRaid1 (see Bootinfo below). The Windows installation created a 100Mb boot partition, so I needed to install grub in this partition. Now I have the Ubuntu working 100% ok. The problem is, the Windows is not booting! The windows option is present on the grub menu, but when I choose the windows option there is a black screen and after that the grub is reloaded. At first I had wireless dropouts: I would be able to start using wireless, but then after a few minutes the wireless would stop working even though I was still connected to the network. Lately things turned worse: while I connect to my wireless network, it just never works. I tried all sorts of solutions on offer here and in other forums but none worked. At best I got the wireless to work up until I rebooted, at which point I would get the same symptoms again: the wireless network is there, but it's not really working. By now I tried so many different "solutions" I don't know where to start describing them; I have also reinstalled 12.04 several times, enough to make me lose faith in Ubuntu. Help here looks like my last resort. For the record, my Asus Eee PC 1000HE is equipped with an Atheros wireless card. I have reinstalled 12.04, ran all the suggested updates, and receive the following response when I type iwconfig in the terminal: lo no wireless extensions. wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"Arsenal" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.452 GHz Access Point: 00:04:ED:48:67:89 Bit Rate=1 Mb/s Tx-Power=16 dBm Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Management:off Link Quality=70/70 Signal level=-29 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:27 Invalid misc:57 Missed beacon:0 eth0 no wireless extensions.
