• Best software for taking math notes at lectures

  Let me first just say that I know about La-Tex, and that doesn't fast enough. I use it for papers, but for "real-time" note taking it's just to heavy. I'm talking two math classes this semester. Linear algebra and discrete math, I just got a laptop with 10 hour battery life which makes me want to take notes on it!!! Openoffice with formula thingy is what I use now. Now I have to pay attention lol. Thanks.

• ERROR 0x8007007A when trying to schedule a task

  I am getting the error "The data area passed to a system call is too small. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007A)" when trying to create a scheduled task on a particular windows machine. The problem description is identical to that described in this Microsoft KB article I followed their steps to resolve: Stopped the task scheduler service (right-clicked "Task Scheduler" in the Services window from Control Panel and selected "Stop"). Restarted the task scheduler service Waited 15 minutes tried to schedule the task. But the error is persisting. To give more context of how we are creating these scheduled tasks, they are actually generated automatically from a configuration script (we run the script each time we wish to make a change). Each time this happens, it deletes all of the existing tasks and creates new ones. I don't know what else to try.... but surely there is some way to "reset" the task scheduler... How can I stop this error from happening.

• Windows Domain Controller: Create a test environment from a production environment

  I need to create a working test environment of a domain we have. I need to have all the data from the production environment in the test environment. What is the best way to go about doing this? Here are some ideas I have but I am not sure if there is a better/recommended way of doing this. Use Vmware converter to create a VM of one of the production DCs create a VM and promo it on the real domain and move the vm to my test environment. use some kind of backup utility to backup the domain info and restore it to my vm I created. • Disk is spinning down each minute, unable to disable it

  I played with spindown and APM settings of my Samsung discs and now they spin down every minute. I want to disable it, but it seems it does not accept any of the spindown time or APM values. Nothing works, it's all the same. Please help what values should be proper for it. • Linux: setting up an elite/high-anonimity Web proxy on a dedicated server

  I'm renting a dedicated server which I'd like to use to "surf the Web": basically I want to always surf the Web from the same static IP (the one of my dedicated server). I can do it by running Xvnc/FreeNX on the dedicated server, but this is kinda slow and clumsy (I tried it). What are the steps needed to install an "elite/high-anonimity" Web proxy on a dedicated (Debian) Linux server knowing that my two requirements are: I'm the only person that needs access to the proxy all I want is that my broadband (dynamic) IP is completely hidden (I want to always surf from my dedicated server's IP). Note that using the static IP people can find my domains and my real name and I'm perfectly fine with that (actually it is what I want). What I don't want is people knowing from which dynamic IP (broadband) I'm connecting. What are the steps needed to do that? (basically I don't care about "anonimity", what I want is to appear to surf from a static IP and I think I need what is called an "elite" Web proxy to do that, but I'm not sure) Technical infos and sample configuration most welcome :)

• No network upsets gnome

  An issue that has been bothering me for over a year now. My notebook, running ubuntu 10.04, is almost all the time using a wired connection, with static IP address. And a remote DNS server. Network is configured with entries in /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/resolv.conf, rather than whatever the gnome UI tool was (*) But if I'm out, or simply unplug the network cable, a few things get weird. Specifically the gnome-panel stops working - it is still there, but isn't updating. And opening a nautilus window (e.g. to look at files on the local disk) has huge time-outs. By that I mean it will not open the window for something like 30 or 60 seconds; but when it does finally open it I can see the files and it is perfectly usable. Everything else works fine, alt-tab between windows, etc. I use the commandline to find the pid of gnome-panel, kill it, wait a couple of seconds, and it opens up a fresh panel which is normally usable. (Something like 10 minutes later it will have locked/crashed again; the same for the nautilus windows.) I'm guessing this is a DNS issue? Would setting up a local DNS server help? Guess number 2 was related to having a file server mount (samba, though running on another linux box), and symbolic links to files and directories on that file server on my desktop. My question is a bit vague... Does anyone recognize these symptoms, and have a suggestion? Or do you have some troubleshooting suggestions for narrowing down the problem? The home directory icon took 12 seconds to open up, but then took about 30 seconds for the files to appear. I closed it and tried again. This time it took 18 seconds to open up, but then 70 seconds before anything appeared. *: I couldn't work out how to use the gnome network tool for my needs, which include 3-4 static IPs for testing virtual hosts locally.

• 3 Monitors powered from a Nvidia fx580

  I have a NVidia FX580 card in a Dell Precision T1500. The outputs of the back of the card are DVI and 2x displayport. I tried to run 3 screens from the DVI + 2x displayport to dvi adaptors, but the card won't have it... It'll only run 2 of these screens at the same time. http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_quadro_fx_580_us.html says; **Display Support:** Dual Link DVI-I 1 DisplayPort 2 # of Digital Outputs 3 ( 2 out of 3 active at a time ) # of Analog Outputs 1 To me this reads that it will be able to power 2xdvi monitors and 1xvga monitor. • Software to Monitor the Stability of Internet Connection

  Thanks to the excellent internet connection service offered by one of the best ISP in the world, the internet connection in my area is very, very unstable. I can connect some of the time, but MOST of the time the connection will just drop off ( with the error message unable to resolve host) and after a few minutes, it will resume back. If I ping the domain name directly (i.e., ping www.google.com -t in cmd command), I will get a cannot ping message. Because of the flickery nature of the connection, it's pretty hard to prove to the support staff that internet connection is unstable. So I am thinking about using one software to record down the connection situation, so that I can present to the technical staff and make sure that they have no excuse not to fix my problem. Any such software available? Edit: Of course, such software should not record my browsing habit, and must be able to monitor and record the internet connection condition even when I am not online.

• Disable SSD in ASUS 900 running Ubuntu 9.10

  Recently I managed to completely mess up my ASUS 900, but I have no immediate desire to upgrade since it's only my travel laptop (and I'm waiting for a few months to see if anything interesting comes out). For now, though, I've hit an interesting problem. The 4GB SSD that is soldered onto the motherboard is broken. Since it's soldered on, there's really no hope of replacing it (I believe), so I've been solely running off the 16GB that is inserted into the mini pci-e slot. But since it can't read from the SSD it keeps giving me an error every time it tries to boot and read the ssd. Is there any way to either force Ubuntu to not check the drives on boot or disable the drive altogether, so that I don't have to sit through a 5 minute boot process each time I want to use the computer?

• Linux equivalent to Mac OS X's fs_usage

  Is there a Linux equivalent to the Mac OS X command fs_usage? According to the man page it does the following: "report system calls and page faults related to filesystem activity in real-time". I suppose one option would be to use strace and filter the data, however the fs_usage command allows all the processes running on the system to be "traced" at the same time. • Why are 32-bit application pools more efficient in IIS? [closed]

  I've been running load tests with two different ASP.NET web applications in IIS. The tests are run with 5,10,25, and 250 user agents. Tested on a box with 8 GB RAM, Windows 7 Ultimate x64. The same box running both IIS and the load test project. I did many runs, and the data is very consistent. For every load, I see a lower "Avg. Page Time (sec)" and a lower "Avg. Response Time (sec)" if I have "Enable 32-bit Applications" set to True in the Application Pools. The difference gets more pronounced the higher the load. At very high loads, the web applications start to throw errors (503) if the application pools are 64-bit, but they can can keep up if set to 32-bit. Why are 32-bit app pools so much more efficient? Why isn't the default for application pools 32-bit?

• Windows 2k3 server as a KVM client

  Just wondering if anyone else has had issues installing Windows 2K3 server under KVM. I have tried a few times tonight and keep getting "not a supported platform" when the installation first boots. I've used i686, had acpi and apic off and on, given it 4GB ram, 200GB hard disk and it fails every time. I've done some hunting around, but can't find anything conclusive on google. It is listed as a supported client on the KVM site. Host is Ubuntu 10.04 64Bit, qemu-kmv hypervisor. Drivers, I'm not sure what your asking for there, but the disk is a standard (I believe) 32 bit Win2K3 server. I'm trying to install a bulk standard server install. I've done it with win2K8 no problems, but this 2k3 install is failing every time.

• Distinction between Cloud Servers and VPS

  What is the distinction between a Cloud based host and a VPS? I talked to a Rackspace Cloud sales person for around 45 minutes and never came to a real conclusion on this. So, to elaborate on my question a bit -- what benefits might a "cloud" server provide me versus a VPS provider such as Linode and vice versa -- what benefits would a VPS provide over a cloud provider? From what I've been able to ascertain, when you host on a cloud (with Rackspace Cloud) you get a instance of Linux in which you install software and such (a LAMP, for instance). From what I can figure, if the instance is running, I am charged and the pricing on Rackspace (according to what I understood from the sales rep) comes out to about $20 a month.... I was thinking a cloud customer pays per processing hours -- so if your app just sits there, no charges are incurred. Does one not pay of the cloud instance is shut down, perhaps? • Intel Core i7 clockspeeds

  I've got an Intel i7 3770 CPU and am generally quite happy about it. However when I am just browsing around without programs running in background it seems to underclock itself quite a lot. This is not a real issue, however there seems to be a small hiccup (0.1s maybe) when it clocks itself higher again. Does anyone have a similar issue? Can I change the thresholds that are being used to change the clocks? I absolutely like that it underclocks the CPU whenever I am not around, but it shouldn't start to annoy me. It might also be related to Windows 8.1, but I am not sure about that, just saying that it's a possibility. I ran LatencyMon as suggested and got this (worrying?) result:

• Why don't SCOM R2 web console performance views load?

  When I select any performance view via my SCOM R2 web console, I get the following error: Unexpected error There was an error displaying the page you requested. ... and some suggestions about restarting my browser, which doesn't resolve the issue. • Cleanup pending installation

  I have an old PC with Windows 2000 that I want to reanimate. Each time I start the PC I see a dialog box "Windows Installer","Installation wird vorbereitet." (Preparing installation). I can cancel that installation and work with that PC. But I don't know what installation was pending. There is a more severe problem: I cannot install or uninstall any other software since I get this hanging dialog again. It lasts forever taking no CPU time. How can I cleanup the pending installations registry to make misexec usable again?

  I have a KVM virtualization in Debian with 2 guests (Debian and Windows 2008). I want to have a 'mount point' shared that can be accessed by the 3 system (host and 2 guests) at the same time. So the only thing that I found was a NFS/SMB network storage. I picked NFS Due to my Ethernet network (10/100), the speed average that I get between accessing/transfering files between the 3 system is always 8~10MB/s. The point is if is there any chance of get a boost system for sharing files between 3 system (at the same time) without wasting the speed of my SATA disks. I mean, without the Ethernet limitation of 10 MB/s

  Hi all, I want to have different SSL certificates for different domains that I am hosting in a single Jetty instance. I do not want to front my Jetty application server with Apache. I am running Jetty 6.1.22. So far, I have only seen configurations with a single SSL certificate, and the configuration for SSL happens within server which leads me to believe that Jetty was designed to support a single SSL certificate. Please let me know if I can use Jetty with more than 1 certificate. I am considering migrating to JBoss Application Server 6.0 since it is closer to a real application server. Is this something that can be done there, and is it a supported feature? Walter

• Zantaz's EAS exchange archive product doesn't integrate with Outlook in Windows 7

  I work at a place that uses Exchange with Outlook for mail, and they also use a product from Zantaz called "EAS" which does server-side archiving of old messages. One of the artifacts of this archival is that email attachments are missing from the archived messages when viewed in Outlook. EAS has a client tool that plugs into Outlook that enables easy retrieval of those archived messages and their attachments, but it doesn't seem to work when installed on Windows 7. I have no direct evidence of this, other than that it simply doesn't work on my Windows 7 machine, and some of our network support staff seem to corroborate this. The symptom is that Outlook seems to know nothing of the existence of this EAS app. The EAS app also has a system tray icon which is there and offers some minimal functionality, but the real goodness is the Outlook integration, which I sorely miss. So, my question is this: does anyone here know whether it's possible to coerce this EAS product into working correctly in Windows 7?
