  • Another question about ASP.NET MVC and a separate project for helper classes

    I know this topic has been discussed to death, but there is one thing that I can't wrap my head around. I'm working on a Web Application using ASP.NET MVC and I come across a scenario where I need a helper class (this usually happens in the early stages of development. So I go ahead and create a helper project in my solution that I use to manage all of my Helper Classes. Now, do I have to build that project and dump the dll in the bin directory every time I make changes to is, or is there a way to have the main web application reference the classes contained within the separate project without the separate build process? I'm just looking for the easiest way to add helper classes without the hastel of building and moving the dll every time I make a change or addition. Also, sorry for the very newbie-esque question here. All of the web apps I've build in the past have all been in the same project (web forms, App_Code, etc).

    I'm working on an application which consists of a Web Application and a Standalone Application. Both of the applications use the same database and require authentication and authorization. Within the Standalone Application a web browser needs to be opened, going to a page within the Web Application. This page is for authorized users only. Could anyone tell me if there is an easy way to automatically login within the Web Application via the Standalone Application? Besides using cookies or providing a token in the url. Thank you.

  • Can I completely convert an Ubuntu desktop installation to a server one? (not just the packages)

    I am aware that the server and desktop editions only differ by the packages installed, and I can install server packages (LAMP etc.) into a desktop edition and get the same thing. However, I want to be able to completely change my desktop installation into a server edition. e.g: when I type uname -a or lsb_release -a it is supposed to say Ubuntu server or something. I currently have an 11.10 desktop installation with LAMP stack installed and the info displayed by apache is "Apache blah blah, on (Ubuntu) server. Where does apache get this information that I am using an Ubuntu desktop installation and not a server one? Is there a config file(s) to edit?

    I have public variable 'MessagePlaceholder' on MasterPage and a Class that accesses this property like that setting it's value to string from getMessage(); ((HttpContext.Current.Handler as System.Web.UI.Page).Master as MasterPage).MessagePlaceholder = getMessage(); which gives me an error like this one Error 3 'System.Web.UI.MasterPage' does not contain a definition for 'MessagePlaceholder' and no extension method 'MessagePlaceholder' accepting a first argument of type 'System.Web.UI.MasterPage' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) What should i do ?

    I am trying to get my head around annotation based mappings and I am having some trouble mapping requests directly to jsp. Do all request have to go through a controller? Is it possible to make it just go to a jsp without declaring a RequestMapping for GET? I am using a InternalResourceViewResolver.   • AVG Installer Error

    my computer is running window XP home editon. the avg i am using is expirying soon and so a pop out ask me to install AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011. When the download is about to complete, i was ask to reboot the computer, i click "OK". after my computer restart , there was a pop out say "AVG Installer- Error A system restart is required in order to continue with the installation. Please restart your system and try again." Since the only option was "OK" i click it, and restart my computer. After restarting, the same pop-out appear. I could not download AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011 as the pop-out keep appearing if i run it or uninstall. can anyone help me?? btw my brower is int

    I have a sharepoint 2010 web application with 2 different zones, default zone with windows login (for search crawl), internet with Claims (FBA) for users to login. I have custom webparts that uses using (SPSite mySite = new SPSite(SPContext.Current.Site.ID)) using (SPWeb web = mySite.RootWeb) { string url = web.Url I use this url to include to emails etc... Problem is: when user connects to FBA (extended zone), and goes to the webpart,string url in my code returns the url of the default zone(windows auth) where user should not be touching. I have different host headers for these zones, any help would be very appreciated. Update: fixed it with using (SPSite newsite =new SPSite(SPContext.Current.Site.ID,SPContext.Current.Site.Zone)) using (SPWeb web = newsite.RootWeb) { //do your implementation here }

  • What Kind of Knowledge is Necessary For a Permon Who Does Not Have IT Background? [closed]

    One of my colleagues joined our company, which by the way is a internet company, months ago as an on-line marketing specialist. He majored English in his college and has never deeply touched IT before. He says that to be a good on-line marketing specialist he needs to lean some basic IT skills in order to deliver superb work. According to him, things like Search Engine Optimization, monitoring competitors' web sites, design some functionality on web site and so on require IT entree-level knowledge. And he asks me what kind knowledge is helpful for him to do his job. I am stunted by his question. It is easy enough to answer, things like HTML, CSS, even Photo-shop are required in some job descriptions. Also, I believe some basic understanding of dynamic web site, static web site is helpful to him. On the other hand, as a techie I still feel my answer is awkward. What is your opinion on this?   • Unable to set NTFS permissions for ApplicationPoolIdentity on Windows 2008 SP2

    On Windows 2008 R2 I am able to set NTFS permissions for an application pool's synthesised ApplicationPoolIdentity account thus: ICACLS d:\websites\site1\www /grant "IIS AppPool\site1":(CI)(OI)(M) The website's application pool is named site1 and is configured to run as ApplicationPoolIdentity. The site's authentication is also configured to authenticate as ApplicationPoolIdentity. I've done this a thousand times on Windows 2008 Standard Edition R2 with never a hitch. However if I try to do the same in Windows 2008 Standard Edition SP2 I get the error: IIS AppPool\site1: No mapping between account names and security IDs was done. Successfully processed 0 files; Failed processing 1 files I also notice that this fails if I try to set permissions for the application pool identity via the security GUI as well. I've seen this before and a reboot has cleared this issue but I'd like to know why this happens periodically. Googling around suggests other folks have hit this problem but there's never a satisfactory explanation. Why would this be?

    I am writing my first Spring 3.0.5 MVC app and am confused about why my controller mappings aren't doing what I expect.   • Perl ftp question, like the previous ones ...

    I need to move or copy a simple text file from one web site to another web site. I have administrator rights to both web sites. The first web site has a large data file (again, just a text file), certain records are selected and written to a team file (for entry into a tournament). Next I go through paypal and pay for the entries. The second site is for the the club running the tournament and I use IPN to return to a script on their site and if it verified, I add the team memebers into the master file for the tournament. I am limited to the ONE IPN script on the tournament site because I have a ton of other entries that come in from all over. The first site has the rosters for the state and no need to type all that data from each club, use the rosters like I use for all the non-paypal tounamenmts. I can ftp the team file to the second server and place it in the folder just like it was created from scratch from that server originally and everything should go fine but I took the examples and tried them and nothing.   • Passing HttpFileCollectionBase to the Business Layer - Bad?

    hopefully there's an easy solution to this one. I have my MVC2 project which allows uploads of files on certain forms. I'm trying to keep my controllers lean, and handle the processing within the business layer of this sort of thing. That said, HttpFileCollectionBase is obviously in the System.Web assembly. Ideally I want to call to something like: UserService.SaveEvidenceFiles(MyUser user, HttpFileCollectionBase files); or something similar and have my business layer handle the logic of how and where these things are saved. But, it feels a little icky to have my models layer with a reference to System.Web in terms of separation of concerns etc. So, we have (that I'm aware of) a few options: the web project handling this, and my controllers getting fatter mapping the HttpFileCollectionBase to something my business layer likes passing the collection through, and accepting that I reference System.Web from my business project Would love some feedback here on best practice approaches to this sort of thing - even if not specifically within the context of the above.
