  From the MSDN documentation: The BeginPaint function validates the entire client area. The ValidateRect function should not be called if a portion of the update region must be validated before the next WM_PAINT message is generated.1 I've been programming with Win32 API for years, and I've never thought to call the ValidateRect function. A co-worker of mine today pointed that we were missing a call to ValidateRect, which fixed a bug we were having doing some high-speed animation using GDI (I know, an oxymoron) Can someone tell me whether or not a call to ValidateRect is neccessary after a BeginPaint/EndPaint pair? I have seen no documentation at MSDN that sheds light on this, and what documentation and examples I do see that you do not need to.

• Need help with a sub query/group/order (get latest comment for each ordered topic)

  Hey guys I have a query that currently finds the latest comment for each of a user's topics and then orders topics by that comment's timestamp. What I want to do is expand on this query's use and print the latest comment for each topic. The problem with this query is that while it orders the topics correctly, it prints seemingly random comments for each topic. I am trying to implement a sub query but I am not quite sure how to approach it. I was thinking that I just had to somehow use this query to get the comments. If anyone has any ideas I would really appreciate it. Here is what I think I need to add SELECT * FROM comments where topic_id='$topic_id' ORDER BY timestamp DESC LIMIT 1 Here is the query I need to modify SELECT topic.topic_title, topic.content_type, topic.subject_id, topic.creator, topic.description, topic.topic_id,comments.message,comments.user FROM comments JOIN topic ON topic.topic_id = comments.topic_id WHERE topic.creator = '$user' AND comments.timestamp > $week GROUP BY topic_id ORDER BY MAX(comments.timestamp) DESC

• In Spring MVC, is it possible to have different return types in one request handler method?

  For example, if a request succeeds, I will return a View ,if not, return a String indicating error message and set the content-type to either xml or json. Based on what I read, seems like I should use "void" as the return type for handler methods. Check this out: "void if the method handles the response itself (by writing the response content directly, declaring an argument of type ServletResponse / HttpServletResponse for that purpose) or if the view name is supposed to be implicitly determined through a RequestToViewNameTranslator (not declaring a response argument in the handler method signature)."(Spring Framework reference). • How do I get broadcast to work with djcelery+ghettoq

  I am using djcelery 2.1.4 with ghettoq 0.4.5 and django 1.2.3 and I am able to run tasks all day long, but when I try to use any broadcast functionality it fails without errors. Take the simplest case -- I run celeryd: python manage.py celeryd The daemon starts and I try to run a ping: >>> from celery.task.control import ping >>> ping() [] I can see the message that ping created appear in the database, but apparently none of the nodes are picking it up? Am I doing something wrong here? Does broadcast not work with carrot?

  I'm writing a Generic class as following. public class Foo<T> : where T : Bar, new() { public void MethodInFoo() { T _t = new T(); } } As you can see the object(_t) of type T is instantiated at run-time. To support instantiation of generic type T, language forces me to put new() in the class signature. I'd agree to this if Bar is an abstract class but why does it need to be so if Bar standard non-abstract class with public parameter-less constructor. compiler prompts following message if new() is not found. Cannot create an instance of the variable type 'T' because it does not have the new() constraint

• Java concurrency - Should block or yield?

  Hi, I have multiple threads each one with its own private concurrent queue and all they do is run an infinite loop retrieving messages from it. It could happen that one of the queues doesn't receive messages for a period of time (maybe a couple seconds), and also they could come in big bursts and fast processing is necessary. I would like to know what would be the most appropriate to do in the first case: use a blocking queue and block the thread until I have more input or do a Thread.yield()? I want to have as much CPU resources available as possible at a given time, as the number of concurrent threads may increase with time, but also I don't want the message processing to fall behind, as there is no guarantee of when the thread will be reescheduled for execution when doing a yield(). I know that hardware, operating system and other factors play an important role here, but setting that aside and looking at it from a Java (JVM?) point of view, what would be the most optimal?

• VS2010 (older) installer project - two or more objects have the same target location.

  This installer project was created back in 2004 and upgraded ever since. There are two offending dll files, which produce a total of 4 errors. I have searched online for this warning message and did not find a permanent fix (I did manage to make it go away once until I have done something like a clean, or built in Release, and then in Debug). I also tried cleaning, and then refreshing the dependencies. The duplicated entries are still in there. I also did not find a good explanation for what this error means. Additional warnings are of this nature: Warning 36 The version of the .NET Framework launch condition '.NET Framework 4' does not match the selected .NET Framework bootstrapper package. Update the .NET Framework launch condition to match the version of the .NET Framework selected in the Prerequisites Dialog Box. So, where is this prerequisites box? I want to make both things agree on .Net 4.0, just having a hard time locating both of them.

• working with files on "start without debugging"

  I'm programming in C, and I have the following problem: I use fopen and try to read from a csv file, that is currently storred in the folder of the exe file of the program. the program works fine in debug mode and release mode, but when I try to run the program in "start without debugging" on visual studio 2008 express edition, the program stops working and windows is showing a message: "*.exe has stopped working. a program caused the program to stop working correctly. windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available". I've tried running the program on several computers, and it's the same. another information I can give you is that if I enter the full path of the file (C:....file.csv) - then is works just fine, without any problem. I know I didn't write any code, but I hope someone will have an idea why this can happend. thanks is advance.

  Can you tell me how can I handle this kind of exceptions: Fatal error: Uncaught exception 'Doctrine_Connection_Exception' with message 'PDO Connection Error: SQLSTATE[HY000] [2013] Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 110' in ... It happens when connection with MySQL is lost during query. I need to handle this exception so I can show 500 error page so the crawlers do not cache page, and to redirect user to appropriate "Try again" page. P.S. I have a lot's of code, so I can not go trough all code to put try/catch block. I need something simple and yet effective.

  I am about to embark on my first outlook 2007 plugin. I would like to create a new tool bar that will have a button that will initially be disabled. When the user selects a message the button should be enabled... but only if the email is of a certain type of email... This is where I need your expert advice, is there a way to quickly flag an email in outlook, so that in the email select event you can look for a property of that email... for example... on_select if mail.type = "FromISP" then I would prefer not to use the from field.... the other thing is during the send process I need to set the flag, I am doing this again using .net so I have full control over how the mail is created.   I got this thing i'm trying to solve: I got a ListView created using Wicket ( 1.5 ) with a lot of elements and a scroll. When new items are available, the user is asked if he would like to refresh the list via a message backed by an AjaxLink: public void onClick(AjaxRequestTarget ajaxTarget) { /* do something ... */ ajaxTarget.addComponent(_list); } So on click the list gets reloaded and the scroll position is reset to zero. Is there any way i can call JavaScript before the list reloads the save the scroll position? (I know how to get/save the scroll position ( .scrollTop() ) , i just don't know how to call a function right before AJAX ).

• [Resolved] OWC does not work with IE8

  Hi, I have a web page that is generated with Access 2003 and uses Office Web Components. It worked fine with IE6 and IE7 but does not work anymore with IE8. Here are more details. I create an MSODSC component and a WSH object to get my ConnectionString in the registry. Then the Dropdown Lists are fed by a request to the database. It works perfect with IE6 and IE7, works locally with IE8 but if the page is served by IIS to IE8, the drop down lists are empty. Can anyone help me ? Thanks Mactov It was just a security issue. I had put my site in the confidence zone (according to the error message). I transfered it into intranet zone and it works perfect.

  Hi, I want to post some data via javascript to another domain. Something like: http://www.othersite.com/submitfunnyname?name=blah The other site (othersite.com) has a REST interface that you can call (well actually this is a get example) to submit a funny name to them. Can I do this already with javascript? I'm a little confused on this - I know if that service wants to return some data, I'd need to use something like JSON-P - even though here I'm submitting some data, I guess the service will return some message structure letting me know the result, so it would have to be JSON-P, right?
