  • What does it mean for a language to be `interpreted'?

    - by Bubba88
Hi! A newbie question. Do languages like e.g. Ruby (if running MRI, I mean not compiled to byte-code) run actually parsed everytime when an execution of e.g. method or loop body is needed? I mean, to execute a loop, you need to parse its body N times? I just always thought that all these programs are being parsed one time at the bootstrap - transformed in a 'strongly-typed' statements tree etc.. Is that not true?

  • How to make socket.recv(500) not stop a while loop.

    - by ImTooStupidForThis
I made an IRC bot which uses a while true loop to receive whatever is said. To receive I use recv(500), but that stops the loop if there isn't anything to receive, but i need the loop to continue even if there isn't anything to receive. I need a makeshift timer to continue running. Example code: /A lot of stuff/ timer=0 while 1: timer=timer+1 line=s.recv(500) #If there is nothing to receive, the loop and thus the timer stop. /A lot of stuff/ So either I need a way to stop it stopping the loop, or I need a better timer.

  • Why does `Array(0,1,2) == Array(0,1,2)` not return the expected result?

    - by soc
As far as I understand, Scala's == defines the natural equality of two objects. I expected that Array(0,1,2) == Array(0,1,2) compares the natural equality e. g. checks if all elements of the array return true when compared with the corresponding elements of the other array. People told me that Scala's Array is just a Java [] which only compares identity. But Scala's String is also just a Java String but Scala overrides equals to compare natural equality. I wonder why Array's equals method was not overridden, too. Thank you for your thoughts!

  • ASP.NET 3.5: GetCallbackEventReference doesn't work synchronously

    - by deadbug
I have an ASP.NET 3.5 WebForm that leverages the frameworks Page.ClientScript.GetCallbackEventReference() method and I'd like some of the calls to be synchronous. Now, the documentation says that the 5th parameter (see below) controls this. Specifically, when you pass 'false' it's supposed to be a non-asynchronous call. However, regardless if it's true or false, it still processes the call asynchronously. Page.ClientScript.GetCallbackEventReference(this, "arg", "ReceiveServerData", "context",false); Is there a work-around for this or perhaps I'm doing something wrong? Thanks in advance for the assistance!

  • Is it faster to count down that it is to count up?

    - by Bob
Our computer science teacher once said that for some reason it is more efficient to count down that count up. For example if you need to use a FOR loop and the loop index is not used somewhere (like printing a line of N * to the screen) I mean that code like this : for (i=N; i>=0; i--) putchar('*'); is better than: for (i=0; i<N; i++) putchar('*'); Is it really true? and if so does anyone know why?

  • Why does String.Equals(Object obj) check to see if this == null?

    - by m-y
// Determines whether two strings match. [ReliabilityContract(Consistency.WillNotCorruptState, Cer.MayFail)] public override bool Equals(Object obj) { //this is necessary to guard against reverse-pinvokes and //other callers who do not use the callvirt instruction if (this == null) throw new NullReferenceException(); String str = obj as String; if (str == null) return false; if (Object.ReferenceEquals(this, obj)) return true; return EqualsHelper(this, str); } The part I don't understand is the fact that it is checking for the current instance, this, against null. The comment is a bit confusing, so I was wondering what does that comment actually mean? Can anyone give an example of how this could break if that check was not there, and does this mean that I should also place that check in my classes?

  • Validate NSString

    - by Chris
I am validating an NSString to ensure that the string does not contain apostrophes. The code I'm using to do this is NSCharacterSet * invalidNumberSet = [NSCharacterSet characterSetWithCharactersInString:@"'"]; NSScanner * scanner = [NSScanner scannerWithString:string]; NSString * scannerResult; [scanner setCharactersToBeSkipped:nil]; [scanner scanUpToCharactersFromSet:invalidNumberSet intoString:&scannerResult]; if(![string isEqualToString:scannerResult]) { return 2; } Returning 2 represents an error. This code works, except for the case where the string is an apostrophe. To get around this issue, I added the following code above the preceding block. if([string isEqualToString:@"'"]); { return 2; } This code is evaluating to true, regardless of the input. I need to either prevent the first block from crashing with the input of ', or get the second block to work. What am I missing?

  • My dropdownlist is not selecting an item as expected (MVC 1)

    - by Jen
OK so I have 2 pages where this kind of behaviour is implemented. It works on one but doesn't work in another and I have no idea why. Despite the data containing a list of selectitems and one of them is selected the dropdown list is not displaying this selection (ie. it resets to the blank item). I don't know how to further debug this. In my page: <%= Html.DropDownList("CampusId", ViewData.Model.Campuses, new { @class = "large search_box" })%> In my controller. Campuses = AdminRepository .ListAll<Campus>(a => a.Description) .ToSelectListItem<Campus>(a => a.CampusId, a => a.Description, criteria.CampusId, true); I can see that campuses does have the correct list item marked as selected - so why when it is displayed on the page is it no longer marked as selected?! I can't see anything else obviously modifying the list. Thanks :)

  • SQL Server 2008. Allow Remote Connections?

    - by George
I have SQL Server 2000 and 2008 installed on a Windows XP Pro box. I can connect to both db instances locally. From another box, a Windows 7 box, I can connect to the SQL 2000 instance on the first box but I cannot connect to the 2008 instance using the same SQL Server authentication credentials that worked locally. Allow Remote Connections is set to TRUE for both the 2000 and 2008 database instances. What else can I look for to be able to connect to the remote 2008 instance from the Windows 7 box? I am trying to connect using Mgt Studio 2008.

The modal window pops up but the youtube video does not. https://animalhealth.pfizer.com/sites/pahweb/US/EN/Products/Pages/ClarifideStories.aspx It works in IE and Firefox on Windows7, works in Chrome on Android ICS and iOS6 iPad. • Shoud a method that waits for a change of state be const?

    - by Space_C0wb0y
In a multithreaded scenario, I have a method like this: bool WaitForChange( time_duration WaitTime ) const; This method waits either until the state of the object has changed and returns true, or until the timeout times out (how do you say that?) and returns false. My intuition is, that const is to protect against unwanted side-effects of the method itself, so this is fine. But then again, some user might think that the state of the could not have changed, since the method is declared const. Is that user stupid, or should I make the method non-const in order to avoid confusion?

  • Deleting files associated with model - django

    - by alexBrand
I have the following code in one of my models class PostImage(models.Model): post = models.ForeignKey(Post, related_name="images") # @@@@ figure out a way to have image folders per user... image = models.ImageField(upload_to='images') image_infowindow = models.ImageField(upload_to='images') image_thumb = models.ImageField(upload_to='images') image_web = models.ImageField(upload_to='images') description = models.CharField(max_length=100) order = models.IntegerField(null=True) IMAGE_SIZES = { 'image_infowindow':(70,70), 'image_thumb':(100,100), 'image_web':(640,480), } def delete(self, *args, **kwargs): # delete files.. self.image.delete(save=False) self.image_thumb.delete(save=False) self.image_web.delete(save=False) self.image_infowindow.delete(save=False) super(PostImage, self).delete(*args, **kwargs) I am trying to delete the files when the delete() method is called on PostImage. However, the files are not being removed. As you can see, I am overriding the delete() method, and deleting each ImageField. For some reason however, the files are not being removed.

  • asp.net web application - server side canceling Submit PostBackUrl if not(!) Page.IsValid

    - by Brent
Thanks for any help I have a web application, and the submit uses the PostBackUrl to display data if the form is valid. I need to use different (server side) validation groups, depending on what radiobutton is selected. That is, manually call Page.Validate('ValidationGroupA'). The validation itself is working fine, in terms of Page.IsValid correctly assigned true or false. however, if the page is not valid, the page redirects to the page specified by PostBackUrl on the submit button, where the page is found not to be valid, and the client redirected back with: if (!PreviousPage.IsValid){Response.Redirect("DataEntryPage.aspx");}) However, by getting to here and back again, all form data is lost, and the relevant validation controls and summaries are not displayed. is there an equivalent of javascripts evt.preventDefault() or some other way, once it is detected validation has failed after a manual call to Page.Validate to post the form back with appropriate validation errors displayed? Thank you.

None of the comparison methods get called. How is Array.| comparing for equality?

  • How do submit an object to a struts2 action using jQuery?

    - by James Drinkard
I have an object that I'm populating from a selection off a table row that a user selects. I have a jQuery function that captures the click event and a hidden form field populates an id I need. However, I'm not sure as to the proper way to send off that object to a struts2 action? I tried using this: $(function() { $('#tbl tr').click(function() { var id = $(this).closest('tr').find('input:hidden').val(); var page = "<s:url action='update/deleteInfo.action'/>?model.isDelete=true&model.info.id=id"; console.log(page); window.location.href=(page); }); }); The model object has an isDelete boolean variable and the model has a nested info object that has an id variable with getter/setters. However, when I send this across, the model object isn't populated with these entries. Is there a way to do this or a better way than the url tag?

  • wrap all lines that are longer than line length

    - by user1919840
I am writing a program that limits each line to a certain length. this is what i got so far, i am almost done but i still need to cut each line, but i cant figure it out. def main(): filename = input("Please enter the name of the file to be used: ") openFile = open(filename, 'r+') file = openFile.read() lLength = int(input("enter a number between 10 & 20: ")) while (lLength < 10) or (lLength > 20) : print("Invalid input, please try again...") lLength = int(input("enter a number between 10 & 20: ")) wr = textwrap.TextWrapper() wraped = wr.wrap(file) print("Here is your output formated to a max of", lLength, "characters per line: ") wr.width = lLength wr.expand_tabs = True for lines in wraped: print(lines) an example of what the output SHOULD be is this. If the file specified contains this text: hgytuinghdt #here the length is 11 ughtnjuiknshfyth #here the length is 16 nmjhkaiolgytuhngjuin #here the length is 20 and the lLength is specified to 15 then this should print out: hgytuinghdt ughtnjuiknshfyt h nmjhkaiolgytuhng juin Thanks.

  • Why isn't INT more efficient than UNIQUEIDENTIFIER (according to the execution plan)?

    - by ck
I have a parent table and child table where the columns that join them together are the UNIQUEIDENTIFIER type. The child table has a clustered index on the column that joins it to the parent table (its PK, which is also clustered). I have created a copy of both of these tables but changed the relationship columns to be INTs instead, have rebuilt the indexes so that they are essentially the same structure and can be queried in the same way. When I query for a known 20 records from the parent table, pulling in all the related records from the child tables, I get identical query costs across both, i.e. 50/50 cost for the batches. If this is true, then my giant project to change all of the tables like this appears to be pointless, other than speeding up inserts. Can anyone provide any light on the situation? EDIT: The question is not about which is more efficient, but why is the query execution plan showing both queries as having the same cost?

  • "if" expression question

    - by Here
Hi, I test some simple F# code for "if" expression, but the result is unexpected for me: > let test c a b = if c then a else b;; val test : bool -> 'a -> 'a -> 'a However > test true (printfn "a") (printfn "b");; a b val it : unit = () I'd expect only "a" is printed out but here I got both "a" and "b". I wonder why it comes out this way? Thanks!
