• Ideal way to deliver large data over Web Services

  We are trying to design 6 web services, which will serve another client component. The client component requires data from the web service we are implementing. Now, the problem is, there is not 1 WS we are implementing, there is one WS which the client component hits, this initiates a series (5 more) of WSs which gather data from their respective data stores and finally provide the data back to the original WS, which then delivers the data back to the client component. So, if the requested data becomes huge, then, this will be a serious problem for our internal communication channel. So, what do you guys suggest? What can be done to avoid overloading of the communication channel between the internal WS and at the same time, also delivering the data to the client component.

  Hi there. I'm trying to use XSL-stylesheets in order to transform some generated XML-data to HTML-output. The architecture that I'm using is as follows: [Client Side] Web-Browser = [Server Side: Glassfish v3] JSP-pages - Web-Services. My web service generates some XML-data, then I want to format it with XSL-stylesheet, pass the result to JSP-page and show to user. I'm using JAXP for XSL-transformations and I want to create a javax.xml.transform.stream.StreamSource object with XSL-file stream for the javax.xml.transform.Transformer object, but I'm having a difficulty with specifying the path/URL for the XSL-file. So the question is: where should I put my XSL-stylesheets in a project and how should I access them from code? I'm using Glassfish v3 and NetBeans 6.8. Thanks.

  I am using .NET and am creating a desktop app/service that will display notifications in the corner of my Desktop when certain events are triggered. I don't want to use a regular Message Box b/c that would be too intrusive. I want notifications to slide into view and then fade out after a few seconds. I am thinking of something that will act very much like the Outlook alerts that one gets when a new message arrives. The question is: Should I use WPF for this? I've never done anything with WPF but will happily try it if that's best means to the end. Is there a way to accomplish this with regular .NET libraries?

  Hi, Is there a way or at least a workaround on masking default webmail urls or disabling access webmail urls so users will not be able to change their passwords? Website is PHP based and is using apache server under a shared hosting account. The thing is that http://domain.com/webmail will let users access the main panel where they can change their individual passwords. We do not need this. Most solutions point to changing httpd.conf which we are not allowed to change since this is on a shared hosting service. I'm looking for at least a workaround to this issue. How about disabling it through their browsers if my client is under a network server, this would be a decent workaround isn't it? or are there any more suggestions aside from this? Please help. This is my urgent issue. Thank you very much!

  If I were to extricate my current membership provider from my solution, i.e. as a dll and expose it as a web service with it's own db, how would I model the relationships with regards to SOA design. For example I have a table: USER id, name, lastname, username, password, role. and table PRODUCT id, name, price, createdate, userid the foreign key being userid to table user. How would I model the relationship and/or query the db. If I wanted to get all products that were uploaded today for example, before I would query: SELECT u.name, u.lastname, u.username, p.* FROM PRODUCT p INNER JOIN USER u ON p.userid = u.id WHERE createdate = '05/05/2010' Now that I don't have the table within the database how would I perform this query?   I have a service that accepts Xmla queries for Analysis services, often times those queries themselves will have a string that contains a fragment that looks something like {{[Time].[Year].[All]}} Recording these requests works fine but when I try to re-run the test I get an error from the test runner... Request failed: Exception occurred: There is no context parameter with the name ' [Time].[Year].[All]' in the WebTestContext This was confusing for some time but when I asked VS to generate a coded version of the test I was able to see the problem a bit better. VS searches for the '{{' and '}}' tokens and makes changes, considering those areas to refer to Context parameters, the code looks like this.Context["\n\t[Time].[Year].[All]"].ToString() Anyone know how to instruct Visual Studio to not perform this replacement operation? Or another way around this issue?

  Hello everybody. I'm building a Visual Studio Package and associated with it, I have an app.config file (which contains some information about connecting to a WCF service). As far as I can tell, this package is actually connecting to the devnev.exe.config configuration file (if I use AppDomain.CurrentDomain.SetupInformation.ConfigurationFile), it will retrieve the path to the devnev.exe.config Firstly, is this correct? Shouldn't the package automatically pick up the app.config file? If this is the case, then how can I make the project use the app.config file? I'm running VS2010 Ultimate, programming in C#. Thanks!

• How entity edit URL from within plug-in in MS Dyanmics CRM 4.0

  I would like to have a workflow create a task, then email the assigned user that they have a new task and include a link to the newly created task in the body of the email. I have client side code that will correctly create the edit URL, using the entities GUID and stores it in a custom attribute. However, when the task is created from within a workflow, the client script isn't run. So, I think a plug-in should work, but I can't figure out how to determine the URL of the CRM installation. I'm authoring this in a test environment and definitely don't want to have to change things when I move to production. I'm sure I could use a config file, but seems like the plug-in should be able to figure this out at runtime. Anyone have any ideas how to access the URL of the crm service from within a plug-in? Any other ideas? Thanks!

• Ruby Rack: startup and teardown operations (Tokyo Cabinet connection)

  I have built a pretty simple REST service in Sinatra, on Rack. It's backed by 3 Tokyo Cabinet/Table datastores, which have connections that need to be opened and closed. I have two model classes written in straight Ruby that currently simply connect, get or put what they need, and then disconnect. Obviously, this isn't going to work long-term. I also have some Rack middleware like Warden that rely on these model classes. What's the best way to manage opening and closing the connections? Rack doesn't provide startup/shutdown hooks as I'm aware. I thought about inserting a piece of middleware that provides reference to the TC/TT object in env, but then I'd have to pipe that through Sinatra to the models, which doesn't seem efficient either; and that would only get be a per-request connection to TC. I'd imagine that per-server-instance-lifecycle would be a more appropriate lifespan. Thanks!

• Subscribing to MSMQ over the internet

  I haven't been able to find a clear answer to this problem. Is there a good way to subscribe to a MSMQ through the internet? Ideally I need security both in authentication and encryption for this connection. But I would like the subscriber to act just like any other client that would be subscribed on the local network. I believe I have a couple of options here Expose the MSMQ ports publicly Put the MSMQ behind some type of WCF service (not sure if that works for a subscriber) What other options do I have? We're sitting in a .NET environment and the main problem domain that is trying to be solved is to change the remote connections from a pulling system to an event based system to reduce the load on the main server.

  I've a Core Data application. In the producer thread, I pull data from a web service and store it in my object and call save. My consumer object is a table view controller that displays the same. However, the app crashes and I get NSFetchedResultsController Error: expected to find object (entity: FeedEntry; id: 0xf46f40 ; data: ) in section (null) for deletion on the console. When I debug it, everything works fine. So I understood that it's like a race issue. How is these kind of problem solved? What's the best way to design a producer-consumer app with core-data?

• Can I use "Online Backup" to backup my DVS instead of pushing to an external repo?

  Hi Guys, I'm currently signed up with a third party service that hosts my mercurial repositories as a central hub to push my changes to as a sort of backup. Now, I'm looking at a system to backup my laptop and am concidering Mozy. I'm a loan developer, and work on a laptop and am usualy connected to my internet via wifi with my laptop only really being on when I'm working, so feel something like Mozy is my best option. My question is, if I'm the only developer, could I get away with just using local mercurial repos and using Mozy to backup everything up? Rather than pushing to an external repo? Many thanks Matt

The ideal scenario is as follows: User tries to create an entity in CRM In pre-create hook a 3rd party library function is called (or web service or whatever), filled with relevant info, which tries to create the respective entity on the server If the call fails, creation fails in CRM If the call succeeds, the entity is created in the CRM AND additional fields are filled with return values from the call More specifically, I want to do something like this when user tries to create a new entity instance: try { ExternalWebService.CreateTrade(ref TradeInfo info) //this was initialized on the external server myCRM_Trade_Entity.SerialNo = info.SerialNo; CreateNew(myCRM_Trade_Entity); } catch (whatever) { fail; } What would be the suggested way to do this? • Outlook Macro not executing

  Hello all, we are using an an outlook macro for incoming emails to unzip the attachments, log them in sql server and copy them to a special working folder where a windows service processes them. The problems are: the user must be logged in at the server otherwise the macro wont run. I think there is no workaround for this. whenever a modal dialog pops up in outlook and waits for user input, the macro wont execute either (f.e. AutoArchive) I have stopped AutoArchiving all x-days in the options. Because its a productive environment, are there other possible windows preventing the macro to execute, which i must disable now? Our outlook-macro solution surely is not the best because of above problems. Are there better alternatives to read emails, unzip attachments and move them to a working folder? My language is VB.Net and server OS is windows 2008. Regards, Tim

• What's the difference between the 'DES' class and The 'DESCryptoServiceProvider' class?

  All I can make out is that one of them is the BC for all 'DES' algorithms to be derived from and the later is a wrapper for the Cryptographic service provider implementation of the DES algorithm. The reason why I ask is that I am going over .Net Security and the MS official training book simply refers to the DES class but the another official MS book refers to the DESCrypto' class. What's the difference between these two? When would you use either of them? What do I need to know as far as the 70-536 exam is concerned.   Hi, I have a desktop application that needs to upload/download images to/from service computer over TCP Protocol. At first, I stored images in file system, but I need to in MS SQL DB to compare which solution is better. Number of images is over half a million. I don't know yet will there be any limitation on size of a photo. If you have done smth like that, please, write what your opinion upon this question. Which one is faster, more safe? Which of them works better with this number of photos? If I'll store on DB, do I need to store images apart from all other tables which I use for my application and which type works better - image or varbinary on DB?..and so on. Thank you.

  Hi, My application architecture looks like this. GWT in the UI layer - Calls GWT RPC service (servlets) - Looksup Spring Beans - Calls the DAO layer which is implemented in JPA (EclipseLink). I have successfully tested the application with GWT rpc services directly calling the JPA layer. But I am having trouble integrating spring into the mix. (Primary usage of Spring is transaction management). I tried googling, but could not find any good article on the topic. (Most of the articles refers to using Spring MVC within GWT, which is not what I am looking for) Could you please point me to some article/tutorial? Thanks in advance! Manoj

• Silverlight 5 App Crashing

  I have a silverlight 5 app that makes some WCF requests. When the silverlight app is hosted locally on an IIS 7.5 server it works fine, but when I run it from a remote IIS6 box there are issues. The app loads fine and presents the login UI. After trying to log in, a couple WCF service calls are made (successfully), but the response causes silverlight to stop responding and the browser eventually asks to kill the non-responsive silverlight app. I am mostly confused because it works fine in IIS 7.5 Note that I am accessing the same WCF services hosted on a remote box in both instances, and both times I am getting successful responses. It is only in IIS6 that the app becomes non-responsive.
