• Quadratic Bezier Curve: Calculate Tangent

  I have a quadratic bezier curve and I want to calculate the slope of the tangent in a given point. For example, let it be the middlepoint of the quadratic bezier curve, therefore t=0.5 (please see the link below for a picture of this). I've calculated the first derivative of the formula for the quadratic bezier curve; however I get 400 as value for the slope, though it should be 0. Maybe I'm using the first derivative in a wrong way? I know I could also calculate the tangents using trigonometric functions; however I'd like to do it using the first derivative, shouldn't this be possible? Thanks for any hint! For clarification / please note: I'm interested in a general way to get the slope in a arbitrary given point on a quadratic bezier curve, not only to get the tangent in the start- and end point. • IE6 background-position(?) issue

  I apply to stackoverflow as my last resort. I got this ie6 bug while using the image at the background of the link. It seems that ie6 scrolls the background. How can I avoid it? • jQuery - Not sure which method to use, closest() and parent() don't work.

  Hello, again. :) God i feel like i'm spamming stackoverflow, this is my 3rd post for today. Sorry, heh. I even posted a question regarding this before, kind of, but i've changed the code a bit since so i thought it was better to post a new question. $('.pmlist ul li h4 .toggle').click(function() { $(this).closest('.meddel').toggle(250); }); That's what i've got now. The reason why the closest() method isn't working is because the div .meddel is just next to the h4 element. And closest() only crawls right up the DOM tree, ignoring other child elements. Right? parent() works almost the same and doesn't work either. And as i only want to toggle the closest .meddel div in the element, i need something that, yeah justs grabs the nearest one, and not all of them. • rails + sheevaplug = rails home development server and more

  Hello I'd like to build a "Rails Brick" using a Sheevaplug from Marvell (O.S. is Ubuntu out of the box but You can install other distributions on It). It will be a home server and a silent, low cost (99$) low energy development machine. I'd like to add rails RVM, lot of gems, git-based heroku like deployment, passenger + nginx. This way I could have a portable server with a complete development environment and maybe I could find a hosting company where I can co-locate a grid of this devices or I can sell It as a simple little server for 10 or less users offices, with some centralized rails services (I think to a CMS, a BLOG, a WIKI, calendar or whatever this little jewel could afford). The usb port could make It a print server too or a UMTS link to the web via HUAWEI like usb UMTS keys. Can you give me some hint about: Is this project a crazy-close-to-failure idea? Why? which gem would You include? which rails open source app would you suggest? I have already an Excito Bubba Server at home, I saw the TonidoPlug so It came up in my mind to build something similiar but Rails based (Bubba is PHP based, TonidoPlug I don't know but It does not seems a Rails thing).

  Hi all! I have a task - add round corners to HtmlPanelGrid. Now I am trying to do it with css (using 4 images for each corner - that css create our designer). I load css and try to do this in my code: this.grid = new HtmlPanelGrid(); this.grid.setStyleClass("toplist,toplist-top"); But no changes I could see in my page. • What programming languages do the top tier Universities teach?

  I'm constantly being inundated with articles and people talking about how most of today's Universities are nothing more than Java vocational schools churning out mediocre programmer after mediocre programmer. Our very own Joel Spolsky has his famous article, "The Perils of Java Schools." Similarly, Alan Kay, a famous Computer Scientist (and SO member) has said this in the past: "I fear — as far as I can tell — that most undergraduate degrees in computer science these days are basically Java vocational training." - Alan Kay (link) If the languages being taught by the schools are considered such a contributing factor to the quality of the school's program then I'm curious what languages do the "top-tier" computer science schools teach (MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Stanford, etc)? If the average school is performing so poorly due in large part the languages (or lack of) that they teach then what languages do the supposed "good" cs programs teach that differentiate them? If you can, provide the name of the school you attended, followed by a list of the languages they use throughout their coursework. Edit: Shog-9 asks why I don't get this information directly from the schools websites themselves. I would, but many schools websites don't discuss the languages they use in their class descriptions. Quite a few will say, "using high-level languages we will...", without elaborating on which languages they use. So, we should be able to get a pretty accurate list of languages taught at various well known institutions from the various SO members who have attended at them.

• Java/BlackBerry build error overriding too many classes

  Hey everyone, Has anyone ever heard of overriding too many classes in Java? Perhaps this issue is just related to BlackBerry development, but I was wondering if it is an issue in Java, too. Let's say I have the following: LabelField lblTitle = new LabelField(title) { protected void paint(Graphics graphics) { graphics.setColor(0x00FFFFFF); graphics.clear(); super.paint(graphics); } }; LabelField lblSubTitle = new LabelField(releaseYear + ", " + rating) { protected void paint(Graphics graphics) { graphics.setColor(0x00FFFFFF); graphics.clear(); super.paint(graphics); } }; This code works. However, I've noticed that by overriding the paint() method multiple times in many different classes throughout my project, I receive the error: I/O Error: Cannot run program "jar": CreateProcess error=2, The system cannot find the file specified My only solution thus far is to clean up my GUI code...minimize it and reuse it. Perhaps its good that this happened so I can be less careless about creating GUI code all over my classes. Anyways, I was just wondering if anyone has heard of this before. • Free solution for automatic updates with a .NET/C# app?

  Yes, from searching I can see this has been asked time and time again. Here's a backstory. I'm an individual hobbyist developer with zero budget. A program I've been developing has been in need of constant bugfixes, and me and users are getting tired of having to manually update. Me, because my current solution of Manually FTP to my website Update a file "newest.txt" with the newest version Update index.html with a link to the newest version Hope for people to see the "there's an update" message Have them manually download the update sucks, and whenever I screw up an update, I get pitchforks. Users, because, well, "Are you ever going to implement auto-update?" "Will there ever be an auto-update feature?" Over the past I have looked into: WinSparkle - No in-app updates, and the DLL is 500 KB. My current solution is a few KBs in the executable and has no in-app updates. http://windowsclient.net/articles/appupdater.aspx - I can't comprehend the documentation http://www.codeproject.com/KB/vb/Auto_Update_Revisited.aspx - Doesn't appear to support anything other than working with files that aren't in use wyUpdate - wyBuild isn't free, and the file specification is simply too complex. Maybe if I was under a company paying me I could spend the time, but then I may as well pay for wyBuild. http://www.kineticjump.com/update/default.aspx - Ditto the last sentence. ClickOnce - Workarounds for implementing launching on startup are massive, horrendous and not worth it for such a simple feature. Publishing is a pain; manual FTP and replace of all files is required for servers without FrontPage Extensions. I'm pretty much ready to throw in the towel right now and strangle myself. And then I think about Sparkle... EDIT: I came across SparkleDotNET just then. Looks good, though the DLL is 200 KB. Don't know if that's really that big of an issue, though.

• VS2010 asking to upgrade SIlverlight??

  I'm running the absolute latest versions of Silverlight and Visual Studio 2010 Professional and built a solution that contained a WPF project. From there, I added a SketchFlow project (based on Blend 4 RC) and I can run each project within the solution just fine by setting whenever I switch between them as startup projects. From there, I added a Silverlight 4 Business Application (taking all the defaults), and when simply trying to set that as the startup project and running it, VS2010 is giving me the following error after trying to open a web page: Line: 56 (in file TestPage.aspx) Error: Unhandled Error in Silverlight Application Code: 8001 Category: InitializeError Message: Upgrade required If I choose not to debug, I get the Silverlight page saying "This page requires a more recent version of Silverlight"! Clicking "Install Now" on the popup window brings me to Mirosoft's Silverlight page where I see: "The version of Silverlight originally requested is not available. You can get a supported version from this page. This Web browser or operating system may not be compatible with Silverlight. Please review the system requirements and, if you wish to proceed, choose the link for your operating system." If I choose to upgrade anyway, I'm told that I'm running the latest version of Silverlight available. What the heck? I'm running the final versions of VS2010 Pro, Silverlight 4, and the latest version of Expression Blend 4 (RC). Why can't VS2010 run this default Silverlight Business App? Any ideas? Please?? • Using Windows Integrated Auth & Anonymous during redirect on IIS7

  I have an application we bought that I need to integrate, and it uses jakarta connection to get to the application from IIS. So, the basic operation is: user goes to the url Gets redirected to the application SSO is enabled, so redirected back to IIS for fetching of domain credentials Back to application If username is blank show login page, else let user in. This is a simplification of all the steps, but the basic idea is here. My difficulty is that I need both Windows Integrated Auth and anonymous on, as some users won't have credentials, and need to be prompted for a username/password. I have looked at: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2068546/iis-windows-authentication-before-anonymous already, but the user doesn't get to click on a link to decide. The application goes back to IIS looking for login.aspx and from there I want to either get their domain credentials or pass back to the application empty strings to signify that there are no credentials. It seems this isn't going to be possible though as if anonymous is on it doesn't make the 401 request so the credentials aren't passed. If I can't get this to work with just using an ASP page, could it be done using an ISAPI filter, or a module?

This link has been great, but it's not helping me grasp submenus. I'm thinking they're just nested NSArrays, but I have no clear idea. • destroy cfwindow in javascript 'is not a function'

  Hi All, Having an issue here that I have tried everything I can think of but cant get it to work. I have a page with a link that creates a cfwindow like so function create_window(ID){ var config = new Object(); config.modal=true; config.center=true; config.height=775; config.width=700; config.resizable=false; config.closable=false; config.draggable=false; config.refreshonshow=true; ColdFusion.Window.create('newWindow','Window Title', '/source/url'+ID, config) The window is created and the URL has the ID parsed to it that is used for displaying the correct item in the window. This all works fine. The problem is when I try and close the window and open a new window with a different item being displayed, the URL is not changed. I realise that this is because the window is being hidden, and not destroyed, and therefore it is the same window being opened. So I have created an onHide event handler to destroy the window like so. function showItemDetails(){ var ID=document.getElementById("sList").value create_window(ID); ColdFusion.Window.onHide('newWindow', refreshList); } function refreshList(){ ColdFusion.bindHandlerCache['sList'].call(); ColdFusion.Window.destroy('newWindow',true); } Now when I close the window Firebug is returning the error "ColdFusion.Window.destroy is not a function" (In IE the error is "Object doesn't support this property or method"). I have made sure we are running the latest version of ColdFusion 8.01 on the server (as I know that .destroy wasnt added until 8.01) and have applied the latest hotfixes to the server as well. Any ideas?

• problem getting info from a cookie with javascript

  I am having an issue with my cookies and I can't figure it out. Basically I have it set up so it checks for the cookie to see if the user is logged in, and then displays either a welcome message or a login link. It works - except that instead of returning the persons name in the welcome message it just is blank where the name should be. • Calling Model Functions from a Library

  Hello all, I have turned a normal PHP class into a library so I can use it in Codeigniter as a library. I can load it and call the functions I need in that class. Here is that class to help with the question. However, there are quite a few points where I have to call functions in my class. These functions reside in the model that instantiated my class. How can I do this as currently normal calls don't work. • Kohana 3 jQuery/AJAX request not working

  I am trying to post some data to a controller in Kohana 3 using the jQuery AJAX method. I seem to have an issue with the data not getting to where I want it to be. I want the data to go to the /application/classes/controller/stock.php file where the file will process the data. I can't seem to figure this one out. Hopefully someone can help. My jQuery ajax call is: $.ajax({ type: 'POST', url: 'add_stock', data: { 'links': 'link_array' } }); 'add_stock' is the name of the action within the controller. I didn't know what else to try. I've also tried '.' and './' hoping that would be right but it's not. In Firebug, although it says the request was 200 OK, I see that the "RESPONSE" is "Failed to load source for: http://localhost/ddm/v2/stocks/add_stock" and my script in my controller which grabs the data isn't working. Here is that code in case it helps: $links = $_POST['links']; $link_obj = Jelly::factory('link') ->set('stock', $stock->id) ->set('links', $links); $link_obj->save(); I think that the problem is that I'm giving the ajax call the ROUTE and not the actual page it needs to deliver the POST data to. I just can't figure it out here. Any help?

  Hi. I'm a little behind in my X86 Asm class, and the book is making me want to shoot myself in the face. The examples in the book are insufficient and, honestly, very frustrating because of their massive dependencies upon the author's link library, which I hate. I wanted to learn ASM, not how to call his freaking library, which calls more of his library. Anyway, I'm stuck on a lab that requires console input and output. So far, I've got this for my input: input PROC INVOKE ReadConsole, inputHandle, ADDR buffer, Buf - 2, ADDR bytesRead, 0 mov eax,OFFSET buffer Ret input EndP I need to use the input and output procedures multiple times, so I'm trying to make it abstract. I'm just not sure how to use the data that is set to eax here. My initial idea was to take that string array and manually crawl through it by adding 8 to the offset for each possible digit (Input is integer, and there's a little bit of processing) but this doesn't work out because I don't know how big the input actually is. So, how would you swap the string array into an integer that could be used? • Running Magento for multiple clients - single Installaton vs. multiple installations

  Hi There I am looking to set-up a Magento (Community Edition) installation for multiple clients and have researched the matter for a few days now. I can see that the Enterprise Edition has what I need in it, but surprisingly I am not willing to shell out the $12,000 odd yearly subscription. It seems there are a few options available to be but I am worried about the performance I will get out of the various options. Option 1) Single install using AITOC advanced permissions module So this is really what I am after; one installation so that I can update my core files all at the same time and also manage all my store users from one place. The problems here are that I don't know anything about the reliability of this extra product and that I have to pay a bit extra. I am also worried that if I have 10 stores running off this one installation it might all slow down so much and keel over as I have heard allot about Magento's slowness. Module Link: http://www.aitoc.com/en/magentomods_advanced_permissions.html Option 2) Multiple installations of Magento on one server for each shop So here I have 10 Magento installations on one server all running happily away not using any extra money, but I now have 10 separate stores to update and maintain which could be annoying. Also I haven't been able to find a whole lot of other people using this method and when I have they are usually asking how to stop their servers from dying. So this route seems like it could be even worse on my server as I will have more going on on my server but if my server could take it each Magento installation would be simpler and less likely to slow down due to each one having to run 10 shops on its own? Option 3) Use lots of servers and lots of Magento installations I just so do not want to do this. Option 4) Buy Magento Enterprise I do not have the money to do this. • jquery slideToggle() and unknown height?

  Hello! So the problem i am having is that i dont know the height for those hidden elements, because it depends on how much text there is, so when i click on + and show them, animation is 'jumping'. One workaround that i found is to put fixed height and overflow:hidden to those hidden elements. You can see how much smoother animation is running in top left block(the one with 'Vesti iz sveta crtanog filma' at the top). All other blocks dont have fixed height, and animation there is 'jumping'. Atm that fixed height in top left block is 30px, but ofc some elements require more height and some require less, so that is not a good solution... :) So how to stop this animation from 'jumping' when there is no fixed height?

• WDK build-process hooks: need incremental build with auto-versioning

  I've previously gotten incremental builds with auto-versioning working in a team build setting for user-mode code, but now I'm dealing with the builds of WDK device drivers. It's a whole new ball-game. I need to know what extension point, or hook, is available in the WDK build that occurs after the driver has been selected to be incrementally built, but before it actually starts building the object files. More specifically, I have a .rc file that contains the version of the device driver. I need to update the version in that file ONLY IF the driver is going to be built anyway. If I bump the value in the .rc file prematurely, it will cause the incremental build to kick-off (that is bad). If I wait too long, then the incremental build won't see that I've changed the .rc file. Either way, I do need the WDK to realize that the new version I've placed into the .rc file needs to be built into a new .res file and linked. How do I do this? What suggested extension points should I play with? Is there a link-tutorial on the WDK build process that is particularly revealing regarding this topic?

On the first call everything is fine but on the second, third and later calls Instruments show tens of memory leaks on certain lines inside didEndElement, didEndElement and foundCharacters functions. I googled it and found some people having this issue, but I didn't find anything that could really help me.
