• Customers and suppliers database design issue

  I am developing a web application in which I will have customers and suppliers. Initially I thought on using a Customers table and a Suppliers table. Then when I was thinking on bank transactions, I noticed that each transaction needs to refer to a customer or a supplier, so I thought on using a single table named Business in which I will save both customers and suppliers. If I use Customers and Suppliers tables when I want to list the bank transactions I will have to search in both tables to get the company name. If I use a Businesses table I will have to use a business type column, and have the union of possible fields for all businesses types. Any suggestions on the design?

• Can you automatically remove characters from entities created?

  Hi, In my sql database I have tables with name which include underscores, for readability. Just to try and make it clearer see below: TableFoo TableFoo_TableBah Where TableFoo has a key linking to TableFoo_TableBah, this is done so you can quickly see what the table TableBah relates to. I have used this naming convention before with tools such as CodeSmith which give the option to remove the underscores, but I cannot see how to do this in Entity Framework 4. Is there a way to do this, or am I stuck with either renaming my tables or having objets such as TableFoo_TableBah? Thanks,

I have a entities as BaseEntity --Which contains user login info like createdBy,createdTime,EditedBy,editedTime Employee -- which contains employee information like name,address,etc... RegularEmployee --which contains salary ,bonus tht kind of fields and ContactEmployee -- which contains HourlyRate,contactPeriod etc.... My inheritance structure is BaseEntity <--- Employee <---- RegularEmployee (i.e. Employee extends BaseEntity and RegularEmployee extends Employee ContractEmployee also extend Employee Class ). How to design database structure in this case considering all the tables have id and version fields (all tables should at least have these two fields).

• Get information from a higher class?

  I don't know really how to word the question so please bear with me... I have 3 classes: Server, Database, and Table. Each class has a "Name" property. How I want it to work is that each server can have multiple databases and each database can have multiple tables. So in the Server class I have this property. Private _databases As List(Of Database) Public Property Databases() As List(Of Database) Get Return _databases End Get Set(ByVal value As List(Of Database)) _databases = value End Set End Property And I have something similar in the Database class for the tables. This works fine now because I can do something like this to get all the databases in the server. For Each db In s.Databases 's being the server object Debug.Print(db.Name) Next I would like to expand these classes. I want the server class to handle all the connection information and I would like the other classes to use the server class's connection information in them. For example, I setup a server class and set the connection string to the server. Then I want the database class to use serverclass.connectionstring property to connect to the server and get a list of all the databases. But I want to keep that code in the database class. How can I do this? I've attached some code of what I want to do. • looking for RTF template system with simple DSL

  Is there any framework that fills up rtf document with data? The idea is to make business people/testers change the document in MsWord and than generate reports from that. The problem is with tables, Id need to create some special DSL for handling tables and showing hidding text/page parts. Id rather not do that and use some existing solution. I tried to search for something, but I only found frameworks that can produce rtf output from xml input and i want to use rtf as input and output.

• The best practice to setup hierarchy data

  I'm trying to figure out the best practice to setup hierarchy data that i take from a database into some contoller that would show the hierachy. Basicly this would look like a normal tree but when you press the items that are under "chapters" you get a link to another page. I have these tables and this is the way they are connected Period Courses Subjects Chapters I select Period from a DropDownBox and then i want all the courses in that period to line up. Under each course would be the subject and under them are the chapers, typical hierarchy. The tables are linked together with refrences to each other in linear way. I have tried to use treeview to show this, but dont understand how to do it. I though i could use <ul><il> tags and do it at runtime. Reapeter or datalist, possible ? Is it better to do this with databinding in XAML or in code ?

• RegExpValidator never matches

  Hi, I've got a class that's meant to validate input fields to make sure the value is always a decimal. I've tested the regex here: http://livedocs.adobe.com/flex/3/html/help.html?content=validators_7.html, and it looks like it does the right thing, but in my app, I can't seem to get it to match to a number format. • Will a source-removal sort always return a maximal cycle?

  I wrote a source-removal algorithm to sort some dependencies between tables in our database, and it turns out we have a cycle. For simplicity, let's say we have tables A, B, C, and D. The edges are like this: (A, B) (B, A) (B, C) (C, D) (D, A) As you can see, there are two cycles here. One is between A and B and another is between all four of them. Will this type of sort always choke on the largest cycle? Or is that not necessarily the case?

  In my project, I am trying to populate ComboBox from DataSet. I succeeded in populating but the values inside the ComboBox are not distinct (Because it just showing the values present in DataSet). I cant bind the ComboBox to DataSet because I am adding "Select" text at first of populating the values. Here is my code. • Offline database access

  I have a small application which basically consists of an user-friendly CRUD interface to a few tables (and joined tables) It currently works with a MySQL database but I would like to make it available offline. My first thought was to create a SQLite "buffer" in between the MySQL database and the application, e.g. by executing all queries on the SQLite but also storing them in a log table so that they can be executed later in the main database with very basic conflict resolution (I will basically let the user solve it if a conflict is detected) Due to the simplicity of the application this shouldn't be too difficult and good exercise, but I think I would be re-inventing the wheel. So my question is: are there existing solutions or other approaches for this problem?

• Purely functional equivalent of weakhashmap?

  Weak hash tables like Java's weak hash map use weak references to track the collection of unreachable keys by the garbage collector and remove bindings with that key from the collection. Weak hash tables are typically used to implement indirections from one vertex or edge in a graph to another because they allow the garbage collector to collect unreachable portions of the graph. Is there a purely functional equivalent of this data structure? If not, how might one be created? This seems like an interesting challenge. The internal implementation cannot be pure because it must collect (i.e. mutate) the data structure in order to remove unreachable parts but I believe it could present a pure interface to the user, who could never observe the impurities because they only affect portions of the data structure that the user can, by definition, no longer reach.

• Why is post() not updating the DOM after it returns? Wierd timing problem observed.

  Hi all, I have the following code that is really bugging me, I'm thinking perhaps the post() function needs to be blocking. I am new to jQuery(latest version) and AJAX, but I'm using ColdFusion which returns some HTML in the data variable. var dataResult; var statusResult; $.post('fh_result.cfm',$('#myform').serialize(),function(data,status){ dataResult = data; statusResult = status; }); //alert(statusResult); if ('success' == statusResult) { alert(statusResult); $('#result').html(dataResult); } When I uncomment out the first alert, it returns 'undefined' but then it goes into the if block and the next alert box it says 'success'. If I comment out that line it doesn't make it into the if statement at all. My guess is that I want to make this a blocking call or something because I want to insert the data on the page after the post. I also have a problem when I re-write the top code as follows: var dataResult; var statusResult; $.post('fh_result.cfm',$('#myform').serialize(),function(data,status){ dataResult = data; statusResult = status; alert(statusResult); $('#result').html(dataResult); }); //alert(statusResult); Now in this case, the alert says 'success' when I comment out the second alert box. When I uncomment it out, I get one alert that says success and the other that says undefined, but this time it updates the DOM with the result of the postback as desired. How can I do this without the alert box?

  I have a simple mysql_query() update command to update mysql. When a user submits my form, it will jump to an update page to update the data. The problem is that there's supposed to be some data shown after the update, but it comes out blank.   First of all I will explain how I stumbled into this behavior. Within my web application I am using some custom validation for my form fields. Within the same form I have two buttons. One to actually submit the form and the other to cancel/reset the form. Mostly I use Safari as my default browser. Now Safari 5 is out and suddenly my cancel/reset button didn't work anymore. Every time I did hit the reset button the first field in my form did get the focus. However this is the same behavior as my custom form validation. When trying it with another browser everything just worked fine. I had to be a Safari 5 problem. I changed a bit in my Javascript code and I found out that the following line was causing the problem: document.getElementById("somefield").required = true; To be sure that would be really the problem I created a test scenario: <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <title>Test</title> </head> <body> <form id="someform"> <label>Name:</label>&nbsp;<input type="text" id="name" required="true" /><br/> <label>Car:</label>&nbsp;<input type="text" id="car" required="true" /><br/> <br/> <input type="submit" id="btnsubmit" value="Submit!" /> </form> </body> </html> What I expected would happen did happen. The first field "name" did get the focus automatically. Anyone else stumbled into this?

Separate join tables Would it be wise to have 2 tables for this? Like: users_favorites - user_id - item_id users_blocked - user_id - item_id 2. single table users_marks (or so) - users_id - item_id - type (["fav", "blk"]) Both ways seem to have advantages.   I have existing tables - I have following datatables : ActivityTable(Key ActivityId) - which lists the identifier for various activity ProcessTable (identified by ProcessId) - which lists down which activites(ActivityId) are to be carried out along with their order(StepNum). Some of the activities are marked constant with in a process, that is they will have same data, ir-respective of there run environment. RunTable(Key RunConfigurationId) - that identifies the project name and Process Id Then data for each activity is stored is stored in their individual tables Activity_A, Activity_B,Activity_C so on it uses a combination of RunConfigurationId,ProcessId and stepNum. For the activities which are constant we use a RunConfigurationId= -100. Can anybody help me out how I can map something like this in classes using inheritence regards

These tables are defined as follows: Customer -------- ID, First Name, Last Name Order ----- ID, CustomerID, Date, Description I am trying to write a query that returns all of the customers in my database. If the user has placed at least one order, I want to return the information associated with the most recent order placed. Currently, I have the following: SELECT * FROM Customer c LEFT OUTER JOIN Order o ON c.[ID]=o.[CustomerID] As you can imagine, this will return all of the orders associated with a customer. In reality though, I only want the most recent one. How do I do this in SQL? Thank you!

• Dynamic Views based on view models

  I have an asp.net mvc 2 app. I need to display the same page to each user. But each user has different rights to the data. IE some can see but not edit some data, some cannot edit nor see the data. Ideally data that cannot be seen nor edited is whitespace on the view. For security reasons I want my viewmodels to be sparse as possible. By that I mean if a field cannot be seen nor edited , that field should not be on the viewmodel. Obviously I can write view for each view model but that seems wasteful. So here is my idea/wishlist Can I decorate the viewmodel with attributes and hook into a pre render event of the html helpers and tell it to do &nbsp; instead??? Can I have the html helpers output &nbsp; for entries not found on the viewmodel?? or can I easily convert a view built into code then programaticlly build the markup and then put into the render engine to be processed and viewd as html on client side??

  A company is hired by another company for helping in a certain field. So I created the following tables: Companies: id, company name, company address Administrators: (in relation with companies) id, company_id, username, email, password, fullname Then, each company has some workers in it, I store data about workers. Hence, workers has a profession, Agreement Type signed and some other common things. Now, the parent tables and data in it for workers (Agreement Types, Professions, Other Common Things) are going to be the same for each company. Should I create 1 new database for each company? Or store All data into the same database? Thanks.
