  I've begun watching a series of first year lectures from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia, and I'm a bit perplexed by the instructors explanation of how an SRAM gate works. I realize this isn't exactly "programming-related" but since it comes from a series of lectures relating to computing and programming, I thought StackOverflow may be able to help (reddit failed me entirely). In this lecture beginning at around 32:12, Richard (the lecturer) tries to explain how a "latch gate" works within SRAM. Although his students seem to keep up, I feel I'm missing something crucial which is preventing the concept from really "clicking" in my brain. • How to secure images with Rails?

  I have a gallery in my rails app that needs to only allow certain images to be shown to specific, logged in users. I am using Paperclip for image processing now, but it saves all images in a public folder available to anyone. Note that I don't have to use Paperclip if there is a better way, and I already have the login system in place. I just need a way to place the images in a non-public location, but still be able to serve them as needed. Is it possible to only allow these images to be served to authenticated users?

• Is it possible to reference a file stored in Isolated Storage by its URI?

  Using this previous question as motivation, I would like to temporarily store images and videos in Isolated Storage. My application (written in WPF/C#) will allow a user to review these temporarily stored items by viewing their contents in a MediaElement. I was hoping to set the MediaElement's Source Property to a video or image's URI stored in IsolatedStorage but I cannot figure out how to dynamically create a URI since it doesn't appear to be naively supported by IsolatedStorage. Any help would be greatly appreciated - thank you in advance! Update - 1/21/09 After battling the issue for a day, I concluded that the Isolated Storage approach is not practical for storing large video files that need to be referenced by a Uri.

• Dynamically generating a file with javascript?

  I'm working on a web app for my company that will let us do some image tagging stuff, and I'd like to be able to generates results in the form of a CSV file. I can do this easily enough by dumping the CSV data to a div or something on the page and having the user copy it out. I'd rather have them hit the a generate button and have a CSV file downloaded as though they clicked on a link to the result, so they can more easily just save the file somewhere convenient. Is it possible to simulate this kind of thing with javascript? I basically want to dynamically generate the file and then let them download it, client side.

• How do I write a Photoshop Extension (8BX) plugin?

  The Adobe Photoshop CS3/4 SDk has a lot of examples for Filter, Import, Export etc plugins but I havent found anything that illustrates how to write a 8BX plugin. Reason I need to write one is to add a new drop down menu to the Photoshop root toolbar (where it displays File, Edit, Image .. Window. Help drop down menus). I have seen product like OneSoftware install an 8BX plugin into Adobe Photoshop CS3\Plug-Ins\Extensions directory that causes PS to add adrop down menu for OneSoft. That suggest this is a solvable problem :-) I tried by changing an existing plugin in the SDlK samples but no go. Specifically i modified the resource file: resource 'PiPL' (ResourceID, plugInName " PiPL", purgeable) { { Kind { **Extension** }, Name { plugInName "..." }, ... Despite using the Extension Kind , PS never loads the plugin. It doesnt generate any compile time or load error either. Anyone has ideas on how to go about doing this ? Thanks

  Hi, I am trying to implement a service to download a image file. The code does nothing but upload a file to the response with each client request. There are no SOAP messages involved but I am planning to implement it as ASP.NET web service. It can also be implement as ASP.NET website but since it has no view (forms, html etc) I planned to implement a web-service. Is this a better approach? Does ASP.NET Website offer better performance that a Web-service? Which one would be better is this situation? Thanks in advance.

  Hi every one, I am very much new to Drupal but am loving it to start with. I got struck at a point with respect to theaming. I have a region called 'footer-teaser' just above footer. Its width is 800px. its been split into 3 equal size columns. Each column has the following. Image of size 120x120 Some teaser text Link to 'read more' The design requirement is all the above should be editable by the admin from the admin interface. If its static i would have hardcoded this but since the requirement is dynamic, i am not aware of how to achieve this. I have customised page.tpl for other sections of the page except this. I am sure someone else would have faced this issue before and was wondering if anyone can direct me in the right direction? Even better if an example is provided. Cheers RD

  Hello, I have the following code in a loop iterating over the different document objects: NSAutoreleasePool* pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; [document primitiveValueForKey:@"data"]; [data writeToFile:filename atomically:NO]; [document.managedObjectContext refreshObject:document mergeChanges:NO]; [pool release]; The "data" property is a large blob (a 1MB image). And as I monitor the memory with the Allocation Instrument memory usage is increasing. I cannot find where the leak is coming from and how to remove it. Thanks!

• Firing a Keyboard Event at the Body - JavaScript (?)

  I've done a lot of research on this but have come up empty handed. What I would like to do is invoke or create an event for the right arrow key (Key Code 39). I was planning on using an onclick event inside an tag to go to a function where this event could be 'fired'. Any help would be appreciated. If anyone needs context, I have a jQuery content slider that's functionality is very hard to alter and currently the functionality I need to emulate only occurs when a user hits the right arrow on their keyboard. What I would like to do is tie an onclick() event to a image that when clicked on fires the right keyboard event and the content will slide. I now I can compile it as C code with such command ocamlc -output-obj -o foo.c foo.ml (I have a situation where I am not alowed to use OCaml compiler to bild my programm for my arcetecture, I can use only specialy modified gcc. so I will compile that programm with sometyhing like gcc -L/usr/lib/ocaml foo.c -lcamlrun -lm -lncurses and Itll run on my archetecture.) I want to know in general case will my OCaml code compiled into C run faster than algorithm implemented in pure C?

• How taxing would a game map grid be to a web browser?

  Suppose we're making a strategy game (think Civilization) in a web browser. The game has a visible map portion - say 30x30 squares. Each square is 30x30px and has several overlaid images - the terrain, resources, units, roads, etc. The classical way of drawing this would be with a huge <table> where each cell would contain absolutely positioned images. It would probably be rendered in Javascript to reduce traffic. But it's still several thousand images and a huge table. Can the browser take it? Will the performance not drop below any acceptable limits? Alternatively I could keep a pre-rendered map image with as many overlays as possible, but that would be more work, I think.

• Listview icons show up blurry (C#)

  I'm attempting to display a "LargeIcon" view in a listview control, however the images I specify are blurry. This is what I have so far: The .png files are 48x48 and that's what I have it set to display at in the ImageList properties. There's one thing that I've noticed (which is probably the cause) but I don't know how to change it. Inside the "Images Collection Editor" where you choose what images you want for the ImageList control, it looks like it's setting the wrong size for each image. As you can see the "PhysicalDimension" and the "Size" is set to 16x16 and not abled to be manipulated. Does anyone have any ideas? Many thanks!
