• Getting a VMnet0 error in VMWare workstation after updating host computer from Windows 8 to 8.1

  Yesterday, I updated my computer from Windows 8 to 8.1. I have VMWare Workstation 10 running Windows XP on this computer and prior to the update I had no issues connecting to my network. However, since updating, I haven't been able to connect to any network and I'm getting the following error: "The network bridge on device VMnet0 is not running. The firtual machine will not be able to communicate with the host or with other machines on your network. Failed to connect virtual device Ethernet0" I've checked all of my settings which currently have my network adapter set for a bridged connection and under device status "connected" is checked. Not really sure where to go from here, but after doing some research I have seen that others users have reported getting this error when updating the OS (any OS, not windows 8 specifically) of the host computer. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

• How to install Python newt or snack in Mac OS X for byobu

  I've installed byobu in Mac OS X 10.6.5. It will start, (i.e. it will start a screen session) but in order to run byobu-config and probably in order to do some other things I need a module called snack which apparently is part of python newt. pip search newt and pip search snack return no results. newt and snack aren't in MacPorts or Brew either. I haven't found anything online in my searching with respect to installing newt on Mac OS X. Has anyone else been able to install byobu and newt in Mac OS X?

• FTP corrupting subsequent aiff files from old mac to new mac

  This is a bizarre one. So I am trying to xfer files from an old mac to a new mac, but the old one has no USB, no firewire, just ethernet. So I hooked it up the the network, downloaded fetch and started a FTP server. The first file transfers fine, but all the subsequent ones are corrupted. I can reconnect and transfer a new file and it works, but every file afterwards is corrupted, somehow. I tried forcing binary transfer, but that didn't help. Any ideas? From System 8.6 Osx 10.7.5

• VMWare server host agent service won't start

  I'm using VMWare Server 2.0 on Windows Server 2003 R2. Sometimes after restarting the host machine, the VMWare host agent service won't start due to an error. This is the error messages from Event Viewer: [Service control manager] Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the VMware Host Agent service to connect. [Service control manager] The VMware Host Agent service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. I've set the service to automatically restart after subsequent failure using services.msc (using a 10 min. delay), but it still won't start. Only starting the service manually seems to work. Has anyone experienced this before? What workarounds or fixes are there?

• install red5 demos via installer or within war file manually

  I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 and installed the red5-server package. I've also downloaded oflaDemo.war file from that address. First I tried to install the oflaDemo via installer, but I couldnt reach the goal. I see the .war file under the /tmp directory, I got stuck with this message: "This may take a couple minutes, please wait". After that, I put the downloaded war file into the /webapps directory and wait 10 minutes as mentioned in red5-common.xml. Unfortunately, nothing changed ... So I decided to extract war file manually. I did this: jar -xvf oflaDemo.war Ok, I see all of the unzipped content under the webapps directory, but how can I preview the demo via a web browser? I really need to make live stream via Red5. Please help me.

• The vps is running, but the domain name is down ?

  Hi, i created a vps on vps.net and installed CentOS 5.4 x64 LAMP , i choosed the root password and the server start running, i added my domain name in the vps domain section, also i added the two name servers on where i bought the domain name. the problem is that i still can't access the domain, so i think that's because a mistake in the DNS template that is created automatically by the vps provider, here is it : TYPE | NAME | TARGET | MX PRIORITY | ACTIONS ------------------------------------------------------------------- OA @ dns1.vps.net. • Why does my MacBook Pro have long ping times over Wi-Fi?

  I have been having problems connecting with my Wi-Fi. It is weird, the ping times to the router (<30 feet away) seem to surge, often getting over 10 seconds before slowly coming back down. You can see the trend below. I'm on a MacBook Pro and have done the normal stuff (reset the PRAM and SMC, changed wireless channels, etc.). It happens across different routers, so I think it must be my laptop, but I don't know what it could be. The RSSI value hovers around -57, but I've seen the transmit rate flip between 0, 48 and 54. The signal strength is ~60% with 9% noise. Currently, there are 17 other wireless networks in range, but only one in the same channel. 1 - How can I figure out what's going on? 2 - How can I correct the situation? • SQL 2008 Database tuning advisor won’t start

  For some reason I can't get DTA to connect to my development machine. It connects to a remote DB just fine but when I point it to my dev machine I get an error saying: Failed to initialize MSDB database for tuning (exit code: -1073741819). I'm pretty sure it's not a permissions issue since I've used profiler to capture what it's doing and all of the commands it's run so far look fine and are being run under my account which is associated with the sysadmin role, when I run them in sql management studio they go through fine. I'm pretty convinced that the problem is related to creating the objects in MSDB that are used by DTA but I tried creating these manually (I found scripts on the web) and it just seems to push the problem along the line slightly. I'm going out of my mind - have even tried reinstalling SQL but that's not fixed it. I'm using SQL 2008 with SP1 (10.0.2531) on windows server 2008 (patched up to date). SAVE ME!!!!!

• BIOS flash XP, 1 long beep, 2 short beeps, over&over

  BIOS issue on HP dv9233cl laptop, wiped drive of Vista, loaded XP, not all the drives loaded. Went to the HP website, downloaded all drivers for this laptop. Started loading them. Loaded WIN Flash HP Network System BIOS Window SP42187. After a minute a low resolution screen appeared stating "It is now safe to turn off the computer" I waited a minute and half. Turned it off. Let it set 10 seconds try to start and No screen images at all and a nasty loud long beep 2 short beeps, 2 seconds of silence and it happens over & over again. I have unplugged/removed battery, still same problem, Any sugg.... Thx.. Paul

• Reconfigure RAID on Dell PowerEdge T710

  I have a Dell PowerEdge T710 under my feet at this very moment, with RedHat Enterprise Server 5.3. I have 6 1TB disks and two 500GB. parted reports two devices, one 500 GB and the other 4 TB. So I assume the RAID has been setup as mirror for two disks, and I assume as RAID 5 the remaining ones. I say "I assume" because it does not make sense. Having 6 disks in RAID 5, I should obtain a total space of 5 TB, not 4TB. It's not even RAID 10: I would end up with a 3 TB unit. How can I check and eventually modify the RAID array definition? In the Fujitsu Siemens I played with some time ago, at boot I had the chance to enter the controller BIOS, but here I don't see a clear way to perform this operation.

• OS X not booting after upgrading LibXML2

  I tried upgrading the version of LibXML2 in my machine to run some propietary software. Compiled as 32-bit (-arch i386) and restarted to see if it worked. Now when I try to boot I can only get into the spinning screen and it just sits there. Restarting in verbose mode (Cmd-V) does not show any error in the process, it just freezes after "AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement: initialization complete". I can't from any CD either (if I press c on startup it just spins the disk around and then stops in the same spinner screen). I've also reset the PRAM/NVRAM to discard any problems with that and it´s still not fixed. Any pointers of what might´ve gone wrong? (Latest gen MBP, running 10.6.3)

• Load Average runaway

  Is there any way to chase down lockups and runaway load averages? Every so often (pretty randomly) I'll get my load average spike up over 5 usually to around 10-15 and sometimes as high as 75 (dual core machine), and cause my system to lock for an indeterminate amount of time. The only thing I can possibly chase it to is using nVidia fakeraid (RAID-1) with JFS on top of that for my /home partition. Also I noticed that when my load averages spike, the power management system doesn't step up my processor speed from 1.6 to its maximum 2.13Ghz clock speed (not sure if this makes a huge difference with this problem). Any ideas?

• Best software for taking math notes at lectures

  Let me first just say that I know about La-Tex, and that doesn't fast enough. I use it for papers, but for "real-time" note taking it's just to heavy. I'm talking two math classes this semester. Linear algebra and discrete math, I just got a laptop with 10 hour battery life which makes me want to take notes on it!!! Openoffice with formula thingy is what I use now.   Although i know there are large no. of post already floating over same issue , but am having no luck so far. I am getting below error message when trying to connect desktop by vmware view client 4: "the desktop currently has no desktop sources............. " My configuration is listed below: using view manager server over VM box. successully deployed 10 desktop VM over View manager and they are persistent mode. previoulsy few users were able to coonect to these desktops successfully under desktop sources i am getting "Domain name\user ID" and under status its showing "Ready" So when any other user who is authenticated trying to access desktop getting above mentioned error message. The other users are unique one who previously never logged in. Also i tried to rebooth the VM desktops assuming they might be locked by another user , but still am getting the same error message. Please help.

• Hardware selection for Linux machine

  Hi, I am building a new box, and planning to install Ubuntu 9-04 or Ubuntu 9-10 on it. I am wary of the hardware selection because in the past I struggled with lack of drivers or driver incompatibility with the network card and video card, etc. The last time I built a Linux box was 2007, and I have not kept up to date with the changes since. One notable difference is that I can no longer find motherboards with nVidia chip sets. Has anyone experienced this and is there some setting that fixes this? I've uninstalled Flash from the system otherwise (Chrome bundles it) so I only use chrome for Flash games, and as a plus the other browsers are quite solid without Flash.

• Minimizing SQL transaction log file size on developer box running simple recovery model

  We have alot of SQL servers on development environment where we never take backup of the databases (TFS for code is enough). The (SharePoint) databases are all set to simple recovery model, but the log files, especially for the SharePoint configuration database is growing quite large and filling up our data drive on the SQL server. Since these log files are never used for anything, i would like advice on how to best minimize the size of these log files -or even disable them if possible. I'm not completely sure why the log files grow so large even on simple logging (checked for long running transactions (DBCC OPENTRAN) but found none). I guess the reason for the log files not being truncated is, that we dont take any backups, and hence Checkpoints arent reached. The autogrowth for log files are set to autogrow by 10% restricted to 2 gb, so i guess that is why Checkpoint (70%) arent reached here either. What would be the be best strategy to keep log files small (best case 0) without sacrificing performance (eg VLF fragmentation)?

  I'm trying to install therubyracer gem for a rails project - http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13793533/unable-to-install-therubyracer-on-centos-errors-with-v8-and-gcc and i'm thinking that now that i installed g++44, that all i need to do is get gem install libv8 to use g++44 instead of g++. Is there a way to run gem install libv8 and to have it look at my updated g++ version? I tried uninstalling and reinstalling pulseaudio, I tried to find a way to install module-combine-sink. Nothing worked. I'm on a Debian Squeeze 32-bit machine. What can I do to fix this?

• LSI 9211-8i won't boot in KVM

  I'm running ubuntu 11.04 with an LSI 9211-8i in IT mode with the latest firmware (10). I'm using KVM with VT-d enabled to pass the entire PCIe device through to the guest OS. I have the device disabled in the system BIOS. When I boot my virtual machine, the adapter quits during bios initialization with the following error: Unable to load LSI Corporation MPT BIOS MPT BIOS Fault 0Ch encountered at adapter PCI(00h,04h,00h) Press any key to continue... I know the virtualization is correctly enabled. I've blacklisted the kernel modules in the host OS. Has anyone else encountered this error? I'm about out of ideas here. Edit: I contacted LSI tech support about this, and they suggested that I try RedHat and Xen. Apparently they don't test or support anything else.

• Why are 32-bit application pools more efficient in IIS? [closed]

  I've been running load tests with two different ASP.NET web applications in IIS. The tests are run with 5,10,25, and 250 user agents. Tested on a box with 8 GB RAM, Windows 7 Ultimate x64. The same box running both IIS and the load test project. I did many runs, and the data is very consistent. For every load, I see a lower "Avg. Page Time (sec)" and a lower "Avg. Response Time (sec)" if I have "Enable 32-bit Applications" set to True in the Application Pools. The difference gets more pronounced the higher the load. At very high loads, the web applications start to throw errors (503) if the application pools are 64-bit, but they can can keep up if set to 32-bit. Why are 32-bit app pools so much more efficient? Why isn't the default for application pools 32-bit?
