  • Disable MOUSE wakeup when doing suspend on UBUNTU

    When I do SUSPEND on ubuntu, in order to wake up, i can just move the mouse and the computer will wake up. But, I dont want that the computer is waked up when I move my mouse. How can I do that?     I want to accomplish something rather simple (at least it would seem to be): Compress a directory Encrypt the compressed file Upload the compressed & encrypted file via FTP I also want to accomplish this in an automated fashion on Linux server. TrueCrypt is not really an option in this case as it seems it can't compress a single file. Instead you have to make a volume that you mount and move the files into. This question answers how to do the the upload and I know how to compress a directory. It is just the encryption that's giving me problems.

  • Creating stereo file from two mono files with sox

    I'm using sox 14.2.0 on Centos 6.0. I have two mono wav files, left.wav and right.wav. I need to combine them into one stereo.ogg file, with left.wav pan 80% to the left, and right.wav pan 80% to the right. I was unable to come up with the sox options needed for this. How do I do this? This is going to be executed repeatably for many files, so I'd prefer an efficient solution. From what I understand there should be a way to do it in one pass (one invocation of sox).

  • What to look for in a reliable backup hard disk?

    I want to buy an internal hard disk and use a docking station along with it for backing up important data. The size will be around 500GB to 1TB. I have a budget and several models fit into it. So far, they only seem to vary in size, speed and brand. These are the only things I can compare from the specs. I guess asking for which brand is best is completely subjective so I won't do that. I want my disk to have long life and be reliable. Doesn't matter if it is somewhat slow. Size: Should I go for the one with highest size within my budget? Will higher density cause problems? Or should I go for a moderately sized one? Does the number of platters have an impact? Speed: I do not want high performance. I want it to be reliable and last long. I am definitely not going to choose the expensive 10,000 rpm ones. Should I go for 5400 or 7200? Do these numbers affect longevity and reliability? Are there any other technical and objective factors that I should look for?

    We all know mkfifo and pipelines. The first one creates a named pipe, thus one has to select a name, most likely with mktemp and later remember to unlink. The other creates an anonymous pipe, no hassle with names and removal, but the ends of the pipe get tied to the commands in the pipeline, it isn't really convenient to somehow get a grip of the file descriptors and use them in the rest of the script. In a compiled program, I would just do ret=pipe(filedes); in Bash there is exec 5<>file so one would expect something like "exec 5<> -" or "pipe <5 >6" -is there something like that in Bash?

  • Retrieving a virtual box vdh that has been deleted from within Virtual box itself

    I had a MS Virtual machine that I imported to virtual box to see how it worked. I decided that in this case MS Virtual machine worked just as good so removed the virtual machine from Virtual Box. In the process I accidently removed/deleted the vhd file that MS Virtual machine uses. Can I get this back from somewhere within virtual box or the recycle bin or do I have to use a undelete utlilty?

    So I've enabled PHP on my Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), and it's working great so long as: 1) I place the file in the ~/Sites directory 2) I use the http://localhost/~user/example.php URL instead of the file:///Users/user/Sites/example.php I presume this is because unless both of those conditions are true, Apache is not involved, and thus neither is PHP. So is there any way to remove either of those conditions? (Well, really the latter, because the first is a symptom of the second)

    Sorry for the slew of n00bie questions, but here is one more. I recently partitioned my 1.5TB harddrive according to this question I then bought this to attach the harddrive to my network. The problem is, how do I navigate to the hard drive to move files over the network to the HDD. should this be moved to serverfault? update: the disk isn't even showing up when i call "fdisk -l" (as root). How can I mount it if I can't even find it?     While updating the firmware on my parent's WNR3500v1, I bricked it. Basically, all that happens now is the power light just flashed. I tried pressing the factory reset button for up to a minute with the power on as well as with the power off. To no avail. Is there anything that can be done other than try to RMA it? Googling around, I found nothing promising. I'm wondering if anyone else has any other solution.

  • Apple / Mac OS X - Is there a Package Manager like Linux

    I am a Linux/UNIX user and love the package management that comes with it. For the most part, I like Ubuntu, but just like anything else, it is the minor things that you live with daily that would be nice if they just worked. My main issue is my wacom tablet while it works, every time there is an OS update, I have to rebuild the wacom driver. The other slightly annoying issue is, my ATI video card is not fully supported. When I use the HDMI out, the sound doesn't go through it, and the screen is not entirely used. I would happily get an Apple if it had a similar package management system like Ubuntu, Gentoo, or other Linux distribution. This takes the work out of getting the latest enhancements or fixes. It also takes all the guess work out about what you need to get something to work. I just want to use my computer, not administer it. Aside from Apple applications, if I wanted to install the GIMP on an apple, would it go and fetch ufraw if I wanted support for that and whatever other dependencies GIMP has? If I want Netbeans installed, will it go and get a JDK and maven if I want that? If not, is there something in the works? I know I don't update my applications that frequently, but that is mainly because I'm not aware of the updates. The updates all happen in the background. Walter

    I find from the hard disk access LED on the front of my machine that the hard disk is being accessed more often and probably because of that, my machine is quite slow. The machine becomes unresponsive even when the load as seen from w command is around 1 or so. My desktop is optiplex 360 dell machine running Ubuntu 10.04. My questions are: How to quantify hard disk access and how to see if it is more than "normal" ? If it is more than normal, what are my solutions ? thanks suresh

  • Logitech USB headphones detected and selected in Debian Squeeze but sound still coming from speakers

    I have a pair of Logitech wireless USB headphones that work with Ubuntu Natty but aren't working in Debian Squeeze. When they are selected as the default audio output, the sound comes out of the speakers instead of the headphones. I have rebooted and tried using a different USB port. Anyway, now I need to figure out how to make it work as the default for the whole system.

    We're looking for a good office jukebox solution where staff can select songs via a web interface to be played over the central set of speakers. Must haves: Web Interface RSS / easy to scrap display of currently playing songs Ability to play mp3s and manage an ordered playlist. Good cataloguing of media. Multiple OSs supported as clients - Windows, Mac, Fedora Linux (will probably be accomplished by virtue of a web interface). We have tried XBMC which worked well as a proof of concept however the web interface is just too immature and has too many bugs for a reliable multi-user solution. I believe the same will be true of boxee. Nice to have: Ability to play music videos onto a monitor Ability to listen to radio streams specifically Shoutcast and the BBC. Ability to run on Linux is a nice to have but windows solutions which worked well would certainly be considered. I am aware of question 61404 and don't believe this to be a duplicate due to the specific requirements.

Also, there are chances that I might have overwritten the memory where the deleted data might have existed. Is there any software to do something about that?   • Practically expected transfer rates for sdhc class 6

    I went and bought an expensive SanDisk Extreme III SDHC 8GB class 6 chip. However when I dump data from the card to the machine via USB 2.0 cable, its only getting 5.0 MB/second maximum according to Windows 7 disk explorer. It still can take up to 20 minutes to dump the card when its near full. This is so far below the rated 20MB/s transfer speed I can't believe it. Is this normal or might I have a defective chip?
