  • Button height rendering inconsistency in Firefox - why are input elements taller?

    Consider the following two elements: <button type="submit" class="button">Test</button> <a href="#" class="button">Test 2</a> ...which use the following style definition: .button { background-color: yellow; color: white; border: 1px solid orange; display: inline-block; font-size: 24pt; padding: 2px 16px; text-decoration: none; } This produces two buttons beside each other with an equal height in Chrome. However, Firefox renders the button on the left with a height 1px greater than the button on the right (the <a>): (I've enlarged the image above by 2x.) What do I need to do to get the two buttons to have the same height? It seems like the font-size is causing the problem - but I need that attribute. Fiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/FfRPY/

    I am new to HTML so this question might sound a bit lame. Anyways I have a saved webpage on my desktop that when i open it in google chrome i want it to show a specific URL instead of its current location. Any ideas how i might get this to work? I tried using the history.pushState but i have no idea why it is not working.   • IE8 $('body').width() is 0 on $(window).load()

    On $(document).ready I run through a for loop twice and alert out the body's width ($('body').width();) each time through. I get a value I would expect (ex. 1092). On $(window).load I run through another for loop twice, also alerting out the body's width each time through. I get 0 the first time through (and the page looks completely blank behind the alert), and then a value I would expect the second time through (ex. 1092). This is an issue I am not able to replicate in a stripped-down example, nor any other browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, IE9, IE10). Does anyone have any ideas, or other things that I could test for? I am using $(window).load to cut up some divs based on their width, which is based on their font size, which is based on a webfont (which isn't necessarily loaded by the time $(document).ready fires).

I wanted to suggest some traditional ways to optimize this kind of code so that the scaling would be shorter at loading time. But after testing it my result was most of the time worst that the original function. Guessing this was the JavaScript engine that was doing some smart optimization I tried to understand a bit more what was going on so I did a bunch of test. But my results are quite confusing and I would need some help to understand what's going on. And to my surprise the optimized version is slower in most browsers (except opera). Results of personal testing (not the jsPerf tests): Opera Original: 8668ms Optimized: 932ms Hybrid: 8696ms Chrome Original: 139ms Optimized: 145ms Hybrid: 136ms Safari Original: 433ms Optimized: 853ms Hybrid: 451ms Firefox Original: 343ms Optimized: 422ms Hybrid: 350ms After digging around, it seems an usual good practice is to access mainly local variable due to the scope lookup. Because The optimized version only call one local variable it should be faster that the Hybrid code which call multiple variable and object in addition to the various operation involved. So why the "optimized" version is slower? I thought that it might be because some JavaScript engine don't optimize the Optimized version because it is not hot enough but after using --trace-opt in chrome, it seems all version are properly compiled by V8.   • JavaScript: String Concatenation slow performance? Array.join('')?

    I've read that if I have a for loop, I should not use string concation because it's slow. Such as: for (i=0;i<10000000;i++) { str += 'a'; } And instead, I should use Array.join(), since it's much faster: var tmp = []; for (i=0;i<10000000;i++) { tmp.push('a'); } var str = tmp.join(''); However, I have also read that string concatention is ONLY a problem for Internet Explorer and that browsers such as Safari/Chrome, which use Webkit, actually perform FASTER is using string concatention than Array.join(). I've attempting to find a performance comparison between all major browser of string concatenation vs Array.join() and haven't been able to find one. As such, what is faster and more efficient JavaScript code? Using string concatenation or Array.join()?

    While teaching my JavaScript class yesterday, my students and I came across some interesting functionality that I thought might be worth capturing in a question and the answer I've come to. Typing Array.length in the JS console in chrome returns 1. Likewise, Function.length returns 1. This is important because: Every function in JavaScript is actually a Function object. (MDN JS Ref: Function) Thus, Object.length and likely all other native objects will and should return 1 as the value of the length property. So, finally why is this behavior occurring?

    Possible Duplicate: JavaScript Function Syntax Explanation: function object.myFunction(){..} I've seen some (legacy) javascript code recently that looks like: function window.onload(){ // some code } This doesn't look like valid javascript to me since you can't have a period in an identifier, but it seems to work in IE8. I assume it's the equivalent of: window.onload = function(){} I've tried the same code in Chrome and IE9 and both of them raise syntax exceptions, so am I correct in thinking that this "feature" of IE8 is some non-standard function definition that should be replaced? The code in question is only sent to IE browsers, so that's probably why I haven't run into this issue before.

  • Windows 7 explorer always crashes, opens small "Personalized Settings" window

    My Windows 7 desktop PC, built by me, started acting very weird in the last couple of days. I use it quite often, about half of the time through TeamViewer. Explorer would crash and restart randomly, almost always through TeamViewer. This made me suspect that TeamViewer was the problem but I have reproduced it with and without TeamViewer several times. The only way I can seem to get the problem not to occur is by booting into Safe Mode. I have used CCleaner and Malwarebytes to make sure it wasn't a registry error or malware causing the problem, and I have tried the fix in the seemly related issue here as well every other fix I have found online including removing security updates KB980408 and KB2926765 as well as using "sfc /scannow" and a bunch of other things I can't remember. More recently when I try to start explorer it is popping up a small window that says "Personalized Settings" on the top, but is completely empty and crashes instantly. The only way I can get it to disappear is to kill the explorer.exe process. I wish I could take a screenshot but I can't seem to open paint or even find the exe. I have tried restarting it, I have tried starting it while the personalized settings window was open. I have come up with two lists of processes the first is the list of active processes when I boot into safe mode and explorer seems to work fine. The second is the list of processes that I can narrow it down to in normal boot and still replicate the problem. There is one process that I can't seem to close. NisSrv.exe which is describes as "Microsoft Network Realtime Inspection Service". When I try to close the process NisSrv.exe it says "The operation could not be completed. Access is denied." When I try to close the related service it gives the same message. Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected. My explorer tab in Autoruns seen below along with the error when I try to uncheck something. I should add that I seem to be able to disable shell extensions with ShellExView but I still can't get explorer to start correctly. EXPLORER SHELL UPDATE - See screenshot below I can access the explorer right click menu through a file manager I downloaded called NexusFile, but still no luck starting explorer. Another round of errors that I am getting regarding Windows Search Service The search service has detected corrupted data files in the index {id=4700}.   • Info on UIDeviceFamily key in Info.plist

    The iPad programming guide says I have to include the UIDeviceFamily key in Info.plist. It also says that the transitioning a target to iPad should have added the key. It didn't. I tried creating blank projects, both iPad-only and universal, and neither got that key. Google comes up short too. What's the story on this mysterious key? The simulator doesn't mind the fact it's missing.

  • Android Quick Actions UI Pattern

  • Visual Studio 2010 Solution Find all References Not Working

    I have a Visual Studio 2010 Solution that was imported from a Visual Studio 2008 solution that the Find all References does not work on. I've tried doing some searches on Google to try and figure this out but have come up empty handed. The find all references in VS2008 worked like a charm, we upgraded to 2010 and now no matter what file I'm in the Find All References doesn't return anything. Anyone have any idea how to possibly fix this or some good ways to "debug" the issue.
