• Unattended grub configuration after kernel upgrade

  Today I have been working on automatic deployment of an ubuntu server. I got stuck on automatic updating of the server using apt-get upgrade trying to upgrade to a new kernel. The log looks like this: Setting up linux-image-3.2.0-24-generic (3.2.0-24.39) ... Testing for an existing GRUB menu.lst file ... found: /boot/grub/menu.lst (...) Then a question is presented: Package configuration +---------------------------------¦ +---------------------------------+ ¦ A new version of /boot/grub/menu.lst is available, but the version ¦ ¦ installed currently has been locally modified. ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ What would you like to do about menu.lst? ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ install the package maintainer's version ¦ ¦ keep the local version currently installed ¦ ¦ show the differences between the versions ¦ ¦ show a side-by-side difference between the versions ¦ ¦ show a 3-way difference between available versions ¦ ¦ do a 3-way merge between available versions (experimental) ¦ ¦ start a new shell to examine the situation ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ <Ok> ¦ ¦ ¦ +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ The desired outcome would be to select the first option and to continue: Replacing config file /run/grub/menu.lst with new version Updating /boot/grub/menu.lst ... done After running the upgrade by hand, I used debconf-get-selections to inspect the correct answer for the question (see other settings). It seems like update_grub_changeprompt_threeway is the question that should be answered. However, setting this using debconf-set-selections presented me with the same question: debconf-set-selections <<< "grub grub/update_grub_changeprompt_threeway select install_new" apt-get -y dist-upgrade How can this question be automated?

• Defaults for Exporting Data in Oracle SQL Developer

  I was testing a reported bug in SQL Developer today – so the bug I was looking for wasn’t there (YES!) but I found a different one (NO!) – and I was getting frustrated by having to check the same boxes over and over again. What I wanted was INSERT STATEMENTS to the CLIPBOARD. Not what I want! I’m always doing the same thing, over and over again. And I never go to FILE – that’s too permanent for my type of work. I either want stuff to the clipboard or to the worksheet. Surely there’s a way to tell SQL Developer how to behave? Oh yeah, check the preferences So you can set the defaults for this dialog. Go to: Tools – Preferences – Database – Utilities – Export Now I will always start with ‘INSERT’ and ‘Clipboard’ – woohoo! Now, I can also go INTO the preferences for each of the different formats to save me a few more clicks. I prefer pointy hats (^) for my delimiters, don’t you? So, spend a few minutes and set each of these to what you’re normally doing and save yourself a bunch of time going forward.

• Is this an apt-get issue or network issue?

  I just installed my first Ubuntu server (12.04) instance and immediately am noticing a few things: Running apt-get install or update fails (see below) Running ifconfig produces peculiar IP addresses starting with 10.x.x.x and my router does not see the server at all in its "Attached Devices" page (its a consumer grade Netgear) When I run apt-get I get 50+ of the following errors: Failed to fetch <some-http-url. Temporary failure resolving <blah.ubuntu.com I read up on this error for 12.04, and found some similar posts on this forum and on serverfault that recommended going into /etc/resolv.conf and adding an entry: nameserver 8.8.8.8 To my surprise, I found that /etc/resolve.conf was a symlink pointing to somewhere else and I had to delete it first, then create a new one with the entry indicated above. I restarted the server and tried running apt-get again: same results. How do I start diagnosing the problem (I'm a relatively new Linux/Ubuntu user)? Additional details that may help: This is actually a virtual machine running as a VirtualBox guest OS The physical host that is running this VM is my laptop which has a wireless connection; I'm wondering if (somehow) the laptop is getting the network wirelessly, but perhaps either the VBox VM and/or the Ubuntu server OS isn't configured for wireless and so nothing is "getting through"? Thanks in advance for any pointers!   Intro This is the first in a series of small articles about what is new in Silverlight 4 and Expression Blend 4. The series is build around a open source demo application SilverAmp which is available on http://SilverAmp.CodePlex.com.   MVVM Project and Item Templates Expression Blend has got a new project template to get started with a Model-View-ViewModel project  easily. The template provides you with a View and a ViewModel bound together. It also adds the ViewModel to the SampleData of your project. It is available for both Silverlight and Wpf. To get going, start a new project in Expression Blend and select Silverlight DataBound Application from the Silverlight project type. In this case I named the project DemoTest1. The solution now contains several folders: SampleData; which contains a data to show in Blend ViewModels; starts with one file, MainViewModel.cs Views; containing MainView.xaml with codebehind used for binding with the MainViewModel class. and your regular App.xaml and MainPage.xaml The MainViewModel class contains a sample property and a sample method. Both the property and the method are used in the MainView control. The MainView control is a regular UserControl and is placed in the MainPage. You can continue on building your applicaition by adding your own properties and methods to the ViewModel and adding controls to the View. Adding Views with ViewModels is very easy too. The guys at Microsoft where nice enough to add a new Item template too: a UserControl with ViewModel. If you add this new item to the root of your solution it will add the .xaml file to the views folder and a .cs file to the ViewModels folder. Conclusion The databound Application project type is a great to get your MVVM based project started. Two Convenient Features Inline Assignment – Inline Operations Here is the script which does both – Inline Assignment and Inline Operation DECLARE @idx INT = 0 SET @idx+=1 SELECT @idx Introduction to SPARSE Columns SPARSE column are better at managing NULL and ZERO values in SQL Server. • How to set up a (relatively) secure kiosk on Natty?

  I'm trying to get my application to be the only thing a user sees when the machine is powered on - like a kiosk, but a little more secure. Ideally, what I'd like to happen is this: At machine power-on, the user sees the Ubuntu splash image, then my app. While the app is running, the user can't get back to the desktop or a text login prompt via any keyboard shortcut. This is the (relatively) secure bit. When the user exits the app, the user sees a shutdown image, then the machine powers off. In particular, I'd like to configure things so that the user never sees the Gnome desktop on startup or shutdown. At the moment, I've configured a default user to be logged on automatically, with an autostart item which starts my app, but after the Ubuntu startup screen the user sees the Gnome desktop briefly before my app is started. When the app is exited, the user is taken back to the Gnome desktop and has to shut the machine down manually. Also, because of time constraints, I can't really start over with a different window manager. Is there an easy way to configure all of this?

• Best method to organize/manage dependencies in the VCS within a large solution

  A simple scenario: 2 projects are in version control The application The test(s) A significant number of checkins are made to the application daily. CI builds and runs all of the automation nightly. In order to write and/or run tests you need to have built the application (to reference/load instrumented assemblies). Now, consider the application to be massive, such that building it is prohibitive in time (an entire day to compile). The obvious side effect here, is that once you've performed a build locally, it is immediately inconsistent with latest. For instance: If I were to sync with latest, and open up one of the test projects, it would not locally build until I built the application. This is the same when syncing to another branch/build/tag. So, in order to even start working, I need to wait a day to build the application locally, so that the assemblies could be loaded - and then those assemblies wouldn't be latest. How do you organize the repository or (ideally) your development environment such that you can continually develop tests against whatever the current build is, or a given specific build, while minimizing building the application as much as possible?

  Hi, There are plenty similar questions, but maybe responses to this one will save a developer's life :) I want to migrate to Java. The reasons are very clear: all the .NET vacancies are client and windows oriented (Silverlight developer, ASP.NET developer, WPF developer etc.) and none of them are any interest to me. I worked with .NET since it's beginning as our company decided to invest in .NET having C++ stack and all the natual problems, so I was just blindly following and actually enjoyed it as the products were mostly server oriented with mixed C++/C# code. Today I have beforementioned problem - can't find an inspiring job. I'd rather kill myself than start working on a Silverlight or WPF project. Searching Java vacancies shows promising results, however they all require a huge java-related technology stack and experience. The question is is there any chance to find a job quickly and without dramatic salary drop (I know that Java guys are usually better paid, so there must be a kind of a credit) and if not, how must time and effort does it take to migrate (my .NET knowledge mostly includes server-oriented technologies like NHibernate, WCF, threading, sockets, ASP.NET web services, Enterprise Library, NInject etc etc etc, and (still) some C++ leftovers).   I m enthusiastic about and ready to shifting my career to Game Development sector, but before that I wonder some situations, I m now working as Senior .net programmer, i can only write code in c# right now, but i started to learn c++, I m computer engineer so before I know how to write in C but I didnt work with big projects, I wrote "Game of Life" before with C and used only Linked List DataStructure becouse of pushed my limits. But now I m thinking to shift Game Development, I love to play Console Games, I respect people who works about that business. But I just wonder, I see a lot of great developers who write codes with C++ and I ask myself that guys dont think to join Game Industry so why I think I can join! is that True? I dont live in USA or big country like. I live in a poor country, and here is no any Game Development Company, so I have to move to USA for working that job. So can you tell me if I start to learn something (c++,game enginees,physic enginees,3d math etc.) right now and working my usual job, after 7-8 month is it good time to move and finding a job about Game development in USA as junior game developer? is that possible? or is this just a dream? • Can't boot Windows Xp after intalling Ubuntu 12.04

  Here's the situation. I installed Ubuntu using the along side option. Everything went ok. When I restarted I went strait to Ubuntu and it worked beautifully. When I restarted and tried to enter windows, the loading screen appeared, and after 3 -4 seconds it restarted again. No error, no cursor waiting, no nothing. I looked on the internet for help and found several resources. I tried first lilo since it seemes that many people had they're issues solved with it. After lilo neither ubuntu nor Windows would start. I installed and used bootinfoscript. The RESULTS.txt can be seen below https://www.dropbox.com/sh/r3luoa672qe73uq/Mob13HhNiB After that I looked at Boot-Repair I did as instructed here Can't boot XP after Ubuntu Installation, how to fix? ,meaning I redid the mbr of my Ubuntu install using a generic mbr. with no success. The results of boot-repair are in the first link. Now when I restart my computer I don't even get the windows loading screen, just Missing operating system Missing operation system Operating system not found that's it. I did not use the fixboot or fixmbr option because I don't have a windows cd cabable of seeing my hdd drivers. The usual XP windows setup tells me that I have no hdd. Please help, I don't know what to to next. This is my first time with Ubuntu or any Linux OS.

• Ubuntu 13.10 installed and worked, but now not working

  I have a HP G7000 laptop. I updated/upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10, after the software updater recommended I upgrade. I have duel booting system with Windows Vista. The system was working for the past two days, but I start getting the errors below, after selecting Ubuntu in Grub Menu on startup and at the splash screen it says "Press S to Skip or M for manual configuration" Pressing S gives a black screen and m takes you the errors below. Windows boots and works fine after selection in the Grub Menu. [ 15.235703] EXT3-fs (sda5): error: unrecognized mount option "discard" or missing value. Why is it that the installation on the hard disk has stopped working and does not recognize my / ? What do the above errors mean and how can i solve them? There was no power failure before, during or after the update/upgrade process from 13.04 to 13.10. I now would like to go back to 13.04 without reinstalling afresh? Any help will be appreciated.   I'm currently working on a multiplayer game. I've looked at a number of multiplayer services(player.io, playphone, gamespy, and others) but nothing really hits the mark. They are missing features, lack platform support or cost too much. What I'm looking for is a simple poor man's version of steam or xbox live. Not the game marketplace side of those two but the multiplayer services. User accounts, profiles, presence info, friends, game stats, invites, on/offline messaging. Basically I'm looking for a unified multiplayer platform for all my games across devices. Since I can't find what I'm planning to roll my own piece by piece. I plan to save on server resources by making most of the communication p2p. Things like game data and voice chat can be handled between peers and the server keeps track of user presence and only send updates when needed or requested. I know this runs the risk of cheating but that isn't a concern right now. I plan to run this on a Amazon ec2 micro server for development then move to a small to large instance when finished. I figure user accounts would be the simplest to start with. Users can create accounts online or using in game dialog, login/out, change profile info. The user can access this info online or in game. I will need user authentication and secure communication between server and client. I figure all info will be stored in a database but I dont know how it can be stored securely and accessed from webserver and game services. I would appreciate and links to tutorials, info or advice anyone could provide to get me started. Any programming language is fine but I plan to use c# on the server and c/c++ on devices. I would like to get started right away but I'm in no hurry to get it finished just yet. If you know of a service that already fits my requirements please let me know.

• How should I manage persistent score in Game Center leaderboards?

  Let's say that I'm developing an iOS RPG where the player gains 1 point per monster kill. The amount of monsters killed is persistent data: it is an endless adventure, and the score keeps on growing. It isn't a "session score" like Fruit Ninja, but rather a "reputation score". There are Game Center leaderboards for that score. Keep killing monsters, your score goes up, and the leaderboards are updated. My problem is that, technically, you can log out and log in using a different Game Center account, kill one monster, and the leaderboards will be updated for the new GC account. Supposing that this score is a big deal, this could be considered as cheating, because if you have a score of 2000, any of your friends who have never played the game can simply log into your iPhone, play the game, and the system will update the score for their accounts, essentially giving them 2000 points in the leaderboards for doing nothing. I have considered linking one GC account to a specific save game. It won't update your score unless you're using the linked GC account. But what if the player actually needs to change their GC account? Technically they would be forced to start a new game and link their account to that profile. How should I prevent this kind of cheat? Essentially, I don't want someone to distribute a high schore to multiple GC accounts, given the fact that the game updates the score constantly since it isn't a "session score". I do realize that it isn't quite a big deal. But I'm curious about how to avoid this.

• How to implement lockstep model for RTS game?

  In my effort to learn programming I'm trying to make a small RTS style game. I've googled and read a lot of articles and gamedev q&a's on the topic of lockstep synchronization in multiplayer RTS games, but am still having trouble wrapping my head around how to implement it in my own game. I currently have a simple server/client system. For example if player1 selects a unit and gives the command to move it, the client sends the command [move, unit, coordinates] to the server, the server runs the pathfinding function and sends [move, unit, path] to all clients which then moves the unit and run animations. So far so good, but not synchronized for clients with latency or lower/higher FPS. How can I turn this into a true lockstep system? Is the right methodology supposed to be something like the following, using the example from above: Turn 1 start gather command inputs from player1 send to the server turn number and commands end turn, increment turn number The server receives the commands, runs pathfinding and sends the paths to all clients. Next turn receive paths from server, as well as confirmation that all clients completed previous turn, otherwise pause and wait for that confirmation move units gather new inputs end turn Is that the gist of it? Should perhaps pathfinding and other game logic be done client side instead of on the server, if so why? Is there anything else I'm missing? I hope someone can break down the concept, so I understand it better.

• Introducing Programming To a Mathematician

  I currently am a programmer, I'm almost 16 years of age and have pretty much narrowed my careers down to something involving a Computer Science degree or Electrical Engineering degree (I know they are quite different but this question is about my friend) but my friend isn't so sure. He is very interested in maths and is very good at it and I think he would enjoy programming but he isn't willing to try it (edit he is willing to try but has never done before). Can anyone give me an suggestions for a language or tool that he could dabble in programming (at a reasonably basic level I assume) to solve maths problems or involve some kind of maths. As I say he enjoys maths a lot but I think he would enjoy programming, the problem is I don't want him to be put off by the stuff that isn't relevant at introductory levels such as memory allocation et al. I know that is very important but the point is that I want him to learn a bit of programming with maths then hopefully if he is interested enough he can start learning programming as programming. Thanks in advance, ell. Edit: Its not that he's completely uninterested - more that he hasn't actively explored the area before, maybe because he isn't informed about it. I wouldn't want to force him to do something he doesn't want to, I see this as more of a little push so that he can learn about programming. If he doesn't like it - fair enough, I can't control that and don't want to but if he turns out to enjoy it - this push will have been the right thing.

• Focus follows mouse stops working when opening window from launcher and no click to focus

  This is 12.04 default desktop (unity). I set it to focus follows mouse, and changed the menus to be on the window. This worked for a while, then some unknown even, maybe an upgrade maybe some other setting change caused it to stop working. There are many ways for this behavior to start but one reliable one is to bring a window to the foreground/focus with the launcher. Now the focus is stuck on that window and not just the window but the regions within the window so the close, maximize, minimize and menus do not work. I have to use mouse middle and then mouse right and then focus follows mouse is restored for a bit. The exact details of the mouse action aren't clear, sometimes it seems like just mouse middle helps, sometimes just right some times a desperate sequence of clicks :-( I have tried switching to the gnome desktop and it seems to occur less there but it is not eliminated. I have tried switching mice to an old wired USB mouse. I have tried creating a new account and that has not worked. I have observed "split focus" where to scroll button scrolls one one window but the input goes to another. I go trapped recently where my keyboard input went to libre office calc, but I was selecting the search term in the chrome address window. The selection "grayed" but the keyboard input for the search went to libre. Regions in windows have very confused focus. I have to work hard to get focus on for example the close gliph (X) or the minimize gliph (_).

  PLINQ is awesome for getting a lot of work done fast, but one thing I haven't figured out yet is how to start work with PLINQ but only let it execute for a maximum amount of time and react if it is taking too long. So, as I must admit I am still learning PLINQ, I created this extension in that ignorance. It behaves similar to ForAll<> but takes a timeout and returns false if the threads don't complete in the specified amount of time. • Ubuntu won't boot after initializing the Build Environment for Android

  My laptop worked perfectly util I initialized the build environment for Android. The GUI won't start. It looks like some kinds of graphics card problems. I tried to fix it but after trying a lot of solutions on the internet nothing worked. (I only know basic linux stuffs.) I've already reinstalled the OS. However, I still want to build the Android from source. Any idea what might cause the problem? any workaround?
