  Full disclosure: I work at face.com. Face.com just launched a free (up to an hourly limit) face detection and recognition REST API. We got a very handy API sandbox that developers can use to play the API and to see what it can and can't do. Besides the obvious point of letting you guys know about the API, I wanted to hear from you what kind of applications you think can be developed with it. Some pretty obvious ideas: Face based login (not entirely secure but still fun). • Subdomains for different applications on Windows Server 2008 R2 with Apache and IIS 7 installed

  Hi, I have a home server, on which I have installed Apache, and several other applications that have a Web GUI (JDownloader, Free Download Manager). In order to access each of these apps (whether be it from the local network or the Internet), I have to enter a different port, e.g., http:// server:8085 or http:// xxxx.dyndns.org:8085 for Apache, http:// server:90 or http:// xxxx.dyndns.org:90 for FDM, http:// server:8081 or http:// xxxx.dyndns.org:8081 for JDownloader. I would like to be able to access them using sub-domains, e.g, http:// apache.server or http:// apache.xxxx.dyndns.org for Apache, http:// fdm.server or http:// fdm.xxxx.dyndns.org for FDM, http:// jdownloader.server or http:// jdownloader.xxxx.dyndns.org for JDownloader. First of all, would it be possible like I want it, i.e., both from LAN and Internet, and if yes, how? • Two asp.net applications to use the same membership tables - specifically user login data

  HI, I have created a asp.net solution with two applications. They bothe use the same database which is setup with .net membership and roles. Application 1 uses the membership for sauthentication to an administration area - this works fine. Application 2 - has a different applicationID to App1. I want to be able to use the existing user account to manage App2's authentication needs. How is this best achieved? Do I just match App2 appliactionID to App1's or is there another way? • Portable applications for phones?

  What's the best way to write an application in order to get it working on the several phones out there (iPhone, symbian-based, xpPhone, and so on)? The idea I have in mind is that of writing a few interfaces to abstract from phone-dependent stuff (ie: some Input/Output interfaces), implementing such interfaces on the several phones and then writing an application that doesn't use any phone-dependent thing. But is this really possible? What would be the language I should choose for my interfaces and applications? (would love to use C++, hopefully even with GCC extensions) Is there any project that aims to offer what I need? (maybe something like SDL?)

• Managing Unique IDs in stateless (web) DB4O applications

  I'm playing around with building a new web application using DB4O - piles of fun and some really interesting stuff learned. The one thing I'm struggling with is DB4O's current lack of support for stateless applications (i.e. web apps, mostly) and the need for automatically-generated IDs. There are a number of creative and interesting approaches that I've been able to find that hook into DB4O's events, use GUIDs rather than numeric IDs or for whatever reason avoid using any system of ID at all. While each approach has its merits, I'm wondering if the less-elegant approach might equally be the best fit. Consider the following pseudo-code: If ID == 0 or null Set ID = (typeof(myObject)).Count myObject.Save It seems like such a blindingly simple approach, it's usually about here that I start thinking, "I've missed something really obvious".   I was just remembering back my university classes and was wondering to know if anyone out here even used the "Z notation" in a professional environment. I honestly must say that it was the single most boring class that I have ever attended in my life. Maybe because of the teacher, but at the time we really all thought it was a big waste of time. • advice on working on remote asp.net applications

  Hi folks, I'm a (relatively new) developer using asp.net with VB.NET. Currently all my applications are developed on my PC and then are built and moved onto the web server. I'm going to be working remotely for 3 months in which time I'll be connecting to the company network via VPN. What is the best way to access my projects? I need to have the projects stored on the company network so that others can access them too. So simply copying the projects to my laptop, working on them, then copying them back won't suffice. I tried to just open the projects off of the network share but am getting application trust problems. I'm just wondering what other developers do in this situation? Jonesy

  Applications which run on mobile devices have special user interface requirements. I think Apple did a great job introducing innovative controls on the iPhone/iPod touch platform. Now, I have to design an application for the Windows Mobile platform using the .NET Compact Framework (Visual Studio 2008). I wonder if there are some commercial or open source UI control sets available which are similar to the iPhone / iPod touch UI elements: Scrolling panels based on gestures Instead of a dropdownlist: a new panel with a large list of items Sliding panels etc. I couldn't find any useful products/code. Is it possible to log all verbose/exception in one file per day or event one user one file per day? Since the user can open the same application with multiple instance. I also have another solution is to save the exceptions into database. But if I miss the excetpions, those will not be saved in DB. anybody has better solutions? Thank you very much!

• Running multiple jvms for different applications in same machine

  We are getting frequent out of memory errors in our dev. machines We are running webshpere, eclipse, soap UI and maven in it. Our server gets down due to this "out of memory errors" when we restart our applications in websphere 2/3 times, We already increased the virtual memory setting in wesphere to 1GB. So what i did was copied the jre we use in eclipse and maven folders so that each of these uses individual jvms. But the performance of websphere is same. 2/3 restarts and out of memory errors. Is there any may of making eclipse and maven use different jvms other than websphere's?

When researching further (particularly on SO), general advice is that setting <compilation debug="true"> in web.config has a much bigger impact. Has anyone done any testing to get some actual numbers about this? • Is iOS6 simulator buggy when deleting applications?

  Frequently, when I try to delete an app on the iOS 6 simulator that comes with Xcode 4.5, the simulator freezes. What I do is just long press on the app. Delete dialog doesn't come up and the icons keep on wiggling. Quitting and re-opening the simulator does not help to delete the app. I've tried to delete the app's folder from /Library/Application Support/iPhone Simulator/5.1/Applications folder. Sometimes this helps but sometimes even this doesn't delete the icon from the simulator. This behavior is independent of the iOS version or the device model. It's the same whichever model/iOS I choose. The only thing that helps is using the Reset Contents and Settings option of the simulator. Do you experience the same frustration? If so, have you figured out a workaround besides resetting the simulator completely?

  Hi, Because of a strange C++ warning about the visibility of some symbols and an interesting answer, linking to a paper which describes the different visibility types and cases (section 2.2.4 is about C++ classes), I started to wonder if it is needed for a standalone application to export symbols at all (except main - or is that needed?). Why exactly are they needed to be exported in standalone applications? Is "an exported symbol" an synomym for "visible symbol"? I.e. a hidden symbol is a symbol which is not exported? Do the object files already differ between visible symbols and hidden symbols? Or is this made at the linking step, so that only the visible symbols are exported? Does the visibility of symbols matter in case for debug information? Or is that completely independent, i.e. I would also get a nice backtrace if I have all symbols hidden? How is STABS/DWARF related to the visibility of symbols?

I agree with the Pragmatic Programmers that learning one language/year is a good thing for your professional development So, in your considered opinion, what kinds of applications does Python hit the sweet spot? And why? What advantages does it have, and why do these advantages outweigh the costs in adopting Python? ADD: I also plan on learning a pure functional language like Scheme.

• Monitoring .NET ASP.NET Applications

  I have a number of applications running on top of ASP.NET I want to monitor. The main things I care about are: Exceptions: We currently some custom code which will email us when an exception occurs. If the application is failing hard it will crash our outlook... I know (and use) elmah which partly solves the problem however it is still just a big table of exceptions with a pretty(ish) UI. I want something that makes sense of all of these exceptions (e.g. groups exceptions, alerts when new ones occur, tells me what the common ones are that I should fix, etc) Logging: We currently log to files which are then accessible via a shared folder which dev's grep & tail. Does anyone know of better ways of presenting this information. In an ideal world I want to associate it with exceptions. Performance: Request times, memory usage, cpu, etc. whatever stats I can get I'm guessing this is probably going to be solved by a number of tools, has anyone got any suggestions?

• Timer applications running under lock on Windows Phone 7

  Under the current Windows Phone 7 Application Certification Requirements (pdf) applications running under lock must "stop any ... active timers" (section 6.3.1). However looking out on Marketplace there are a number of timer/stopwatch apps claiming to run under lock and also allow lock to be disabled in their settings. How are these apps certified or is there some loosening on the restrictions by Microsoft if the app allows the user to make that decision? Also some of these apps also suggest they continue even when the app is exited or when the device off. Is it the case that they are not truly running under these circumstances, i.e. the timers either start where they left off when reactivated, or perhaps use the OS time to work out the time elapsed between tombstoning and reactivation? In these circumstance I also presume it is not possible for the app to notify the user when the timer completes?

• What is good practice for writing web applications that control daemons (and their config files)

  Can someone suggest some basic advice on dealing with web applications that interact with configuration files like httpd.conf, bind zone files, etc. I understand that it's bad practice, in fact very dangerous to allow arbitrary execution of code without fully validating it and so on. But say you are tasked to write a small app that allows one to add vhosts to an apache configuration. Do you have your code execute with full privileges, do you write future variables into a database and have a cron job (with full privileges) execute a script that pulls the vars from the database and throws them into a template config file, etc. Some thoughts & contributions on this issue would be appreciated. tl;dr - how can you securely write a web app to update/create entries in a config file like apache's httpd.conf, etc.
