    I have been wracking my brains on this seemingly small issue the whole day. My web dev friends are baffled and I could not find a suitable answer in my search of this site and others (though, I could have missed it somewhere along the way). Here's the problem: 3 DIVS within one fixed-width container DIV The center DIV has text that will be different on other sites The center DIV needs to be centered, and no larger than the text it contains. This is what I'd like to end up with The basic HTMl: <div id="container" > <div id="left" ></div> <div id="center" >Text inside center should resize this block</div> <div id="right" ></div> </div> Below, I removed most of the styles I have tried. This CSS currently centers the DIV (if I set it as an inline block), but I need the other divs to fill the left and right space remaining: #container { width:750px; text-align:center; } #left { background-color:#E85355; } #center { background-color:#CDD7D7; display:inline-block; } #right { background-color:#65A8A6; } I've tried floating, no-wrap, overflow, etc. Thanks a million to whomever can offer some help!     Looking at the CSS3 specs, I can't find any way to select any element that has no children. A way to select in any page, all elements with no children. Any suggestion ? Sorry, I forgot to add the "empty" part, I am actually already using the *:empty selector, but it's not working for any tag that has a nodeText as a child. So it's working for any input, image, object, but not for h2, h1, or any p.

  • Why doesn't my <div> float around another floated <div> while other elements do?

    I have a container with background color green. Inside that green <div>, I have a <div> which is black and styled as a box (50px x 50px) - this <div> is floated to the left. Now if I add a <p> to my markup after the grey <div>, I'd expect it to float around the grey <div>. And it does. However, when I substitue with another <div> which is styled as box (set height and width), it doesn't float around anymore, but disappears behind the floating div. Even if I have first paragraphs which are floating around correctly and THEN I add the div (box), the paragraphs stop floating around and appear on another line.   • Use a table as container or not?

    I have created my entire website by using a main table, and having the content inside the table. Some ppl suggest this is wrong, and I would like to know what to do specifically in my situation. On my index.html I have a <table align="center"> and then all content in it. Now the content is in form of DIVS and they all have relative positioning, so they are relative to the table. For example: <table align="center"> <tr> <td> <div style="position:relative; left:14px; top:50px;"> CONTENT HERE... (Form, divs, images) </div> </td> </tr> </table> I have just gotten to the stage of browser compatibility. Without making any changes whatsoever, my website works perfect in FF, SAFARI, Chrome and Opera. Only trouble with IE. So for my Q, if you where me, would you change my layout and remove the tables, and instead use alot more css and alot more DIVS, or would you go with what I have? And please if you answer me, don't just provide me with the answer, but also a "why" that is... in other words, give me arguments and facts... Thanks

  • Internet Explorer 6 and 7: floated elements expand to 100% width when they contain a child element f

    I've got a parent div floated left, with two child divs that I need to float right. The parent div should (if I understand the spec correctly) be as wide as needed to contain the child divs, and this is how it behaves in Firefox et al. In IE, the parent div expands to 100% width. This seems to be an issue with floated elements that have children floated right.     I'm using semi-transparent PNGs (due to the designer's overlapping of elements) and trying to achieve a layout that represents the design while still working well on the web. Thus I have simple HTML: <div id="right"> <div id="welcome"></div> <div id="welcomeRepeatingBottom"></div> </div> And I'm trying to use CSS as follows: #right { height: 100%; position: absolute; right: 0px; top: 0px; width: 430px; } #welcome { background-image: url("welcome.png"); height: 614px; width: 430px; position: absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px; } #welcomeRepeatingBottom { background: url("welcomeBottom.png") repeat-y; height: 100%; left: 0px; position: absolute; top: 614px; width: 430px; } The problem is...the #welcomeRepeatingBottom div can't overlap the #welcome div because of the transparency. What I really want is the #welcomeRepeatingBottom div to be height: 100% - 614px, but of course you can't do that. Am I missing something here or do I need to manipulate these values with JavaScript/JQuery?

    Is there a way to do this? When using navigation that can change the number of items often, it would be nice not having to calculate the with and updating the css, but just having a solution that works. if that's impossible (I'm assuming it is) can anyone point me to a javascript that can do this? edit re: provide code some code basically I'm working with, what I think is, the most typical setup <div class="main"> <div class="nav"> <ul> <li>short title</li> <li>Item 3 Long title</li> <li>Item 4 Long title</li> <li>Item 5 Long title</li> <li>Item 6 Extra Long title</li> </ul> </div> </div> edit .main { width:100%; text-align:center; } .nav { margin:0 auto; } .nav ul li { display:inline; text-align:left; } the issue I've found with this/these solutions is that the content is nudged to the right adding some right padding (of 40px) seems to fix this across the browsers I'm checking on (O FF IE). .nav { margin:0 auto; padding-right:40px; } I don't know where this value is coming from though and why 40px fixes this. Does anyone know where this is coming from? it's not a margin or padding but no matter what I do the first about 40px can not be used for placement. Maybe it's the ul or li that's adding this. I've had a look at the display:table-cell way of doing this, but there's that complication with IE and it still has the same issue as the other solution edit (final) okay I've tried some things in regard to the indent. I've reset all padding to 0 *{padding:0;} that fixed it, and I don't need to offset the padding (I think I'll leave my whole process up so if anyone comes across this, it'll save them some time) thanks for the comments and replies

  • Reset MAAS after loosing Juju configuration?

    I managed to delete my Juju client cofiguration without running a juju destroy-environment first, leaving my MaaS in a state where I could not deploy to it. I would get the following (conflicting) output $ juju bootstrap ERROR environment is already bootstrapped $ juju status ERROR Unable to connect to environment "". Please check your credentials or use 'juju bootstrap' to create a new environment. Error details: no instances found So, I tried running juju destroy-environment with the new config, to see if it would clean up the old Juju environment on the MaaS system. It gave me the error "ERROR gomaasapi: got error back from server: 409 CONFLICT". I went into the MaaS GUI and stopped the leftover machines, and then deleted all the nodes and had then go through the discovery and commissioning stages again, but I still got the same errors after all that! Is there a way to reset this?

    Hi All,As Umbraco matures I am assuming that needing to reset directory permissions might well become a thing of the past, but at the moment it is still something when I copy sites between machines that I often find myself doing.As it's 4:30am I thought, there must be a better way than having to open up a DOS prompt, navigate to a directory and then run a batch file passing in the IIS root folder location.Well.. there is :)I googled for adding a command to the context menu within Windows Explorer, I found a way of doing this for XP, but it seems the functionality was removed from Windows 7, however I found a very neat freeware application called File Menu Tools which does work perfectly!I have now added a command to my context menu that enables me to right click an IIS site root folder and then call my batch script and automatically pass in the directory.This will save me a bunch of time :)

    So my sister gave me this old laptop that has Ubuntu 12.10. The problem is that she has a username administrator password, but she forgot it. I've tried using GRUB and launching recovery mode and using the root shell prompt. And I type the "passwd username" command, and it tells me to type the new UNIX password, but when I try to type a new password it's like my keyboard doesn't even work. It types nothing. What's the problem? Why does my keyboard not type anything when I try to reset the UNIX password? It always works perfectly fine. I'm grateful for any help, thank you.

    I tried to activate some compiz effect via ccsm (I think wobbly windows) and compiz crashed and froze up the screen. So I used the Control+Alt+Backspace keystroke to force logout. Then I logged back in. Unity wasn't there, just a (non-unity) panel at the top with file, edit, and the like. I was able to pull up a terminal and launch ccsm, only to find almost all settings wiped out. I turned everything back on that I thought should be on, but I don't know if I got everything. Also, now whenever I open up a non-maximized window, it opens up in the top left corner with the title bar behind the unity panel. So what I need is a list of everything that needs to be on in ccsm, and a way to get windows to NOT open in the corner, preferably without having to reset unity or compiz.

Today, i found the wireless icon does not show up on the panel anymore.. monitor and bluetooth are still there... I did: ifconfig -a, and it shows: etho0 link encap:ethernet, and it has: HWaddress inet6 addresss. RXbytes 0 TX bytes: 0, but it does not even have a ip4 address, nor a mask. The other one is: l0 link encap: local loopback inet addr 127.0.0.1. mask 2550 0 0 Can anyone help me how to reset the settings for my wireless connection? Thanks

The site was recently migrated to permanent-on HTTPS, and the like data has been reset, and we've been left with 50 new, recent likes. If you see in the source code, the URL is set explicitly to like the HTTP version, which I believe to be correct. Can anyone help me work out what's happened here?   • How do I reset the password for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

    I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS using Wubi in the D: drive of my PC. I have Vista installed in the C: drive. I have forgotten my password for my Ubuntu Admin Account. I only have only access to the Guest login. Please note, I don't see any GRUB menu and get only Vista & Ubuntu as options while booting. I can't get into Recovery Mode of Ubuntu using Shift, ESC or any other way. Please let me know how to reset the password.

  • CSS: Freeze table header and first column, *but only on certain axes*

    Hello all, I have a variation on a common question, and I'll try to explain it as best I can. It may take some visualization on your part. I have an HTML table (in reality there are tables within tables within divs within tables -- I'm using the JSGantt plugin). I'd like for the table header to be frozen only when I scroll down on the y-axis, but if I need to scroll right to see more data, I would like it to scroll right. Meanwhile, as I scroll down (with the header row staying put), I'd like the first column of the table to scroll down with me. But when I scroll right, I want the first column to stay put (but as I mentioned above, the header row to scroll with me). So essentially I've frozen the first column only on the x-axis and the header row only on the y-axis. I'll stop there for now. If anyone needs more clarification I can try to explain. I've tried this multiple ways, but I'm convinced that it may not be possible without some serious javascript. The table, by the way, is contained within an outer div with set dimensions, hence the need for me to scroll the data. Any help you can provide would be greatly appeciated. Thanks very much.
