• Accenture Launches Smart Grid Data Management Platform

  Accenture announced today it has launched the Accenture Intelligent Network Data Enterprise (INDE), a data management platform to help utilities design, deploy and manage smart grids. INDE's functionality can be enabled by an array of third party technologies. In addition, Accenture plans to offer utilities the option of implementing the INDE solution based on a pre-configured suite of Oracle technologies. The Oracle-based version of INDE will accelerate the design of smart grids and help reduce the costs and risks associated with smart grid implementation. Stephan Scholl, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Oracle Utilities said, "Oracle and Accenture share a common vision of how the smart grid will enable more efficient energy choices for utilities and their customers. Our combined expertise in delivering mission-critical smart grid applications, security, data management and systems integration can help accelerate utilities toward a more intelligent network now and as future needs arise."   I am involved into development a rich UI project: desktop windows application. Application uses asynchronous invocations and in its turn it should be ready to process external messages (events). The problem is clear: at first time it was built as a simple prototype and it was not stress tested and all was fine. Then application was grown: the number of calls to server and number of events from server are high and performance is low. What is more users noticed that sometimes performance is extremal low. Asynchronous invocations based on thread pool (BeginInvoke, EndInvoke), external events are going from WCF service (.NET 3.5). My goal is synchronization of all tasks and putting priorities to every executions in desktop application. My question is: is there any practice how to reach my goal: patterns, task priority list, others? What should I do at first, second and next times? Thanks

  I am looking to streamline my company's web development process. Including analysis. I myself am specialized in XP and Scrum. But we are building web application with a process cycle of 3-4 weeks and a lifetime of 1-4 months. When a project is sold, only then the project managers (= people who do analysis but know nothing about it = a small flow chart and some screen shots as analysis) What is happening is: A LOT of change requests Minimal development time Minimal analysis time NOW: the main question :) can you recommend me some methodologies and books to read for the entire project management ? Thanks in advance @Edit, I myself was looking at a combination of SCRUM for the management with flowcharts, + RAD/LD for development, and trying to distilate something from that.

• Database Management System do exist?

  I want to build a database for my no-profit association, and i was planning to do it by myself. But then i realize that really i don't have the time to buid a solid, secure system. So i was thinking, maybe like cms do exist, maybe there are also database management systems. I mean a layer of abstraction over the database that allow you manage data, manage access to data, create widgets with and expand the data. Maybe with a frontend to use this data and a backend to manage it. that is a cms but not based on pages and post but on data! Moreover, i would like some standard solution, because my IT management position ends this year, so i need something that will be easy to use and expand even by someone that is not a developer. So do exist something that fit my need? PS: i would really like some modern and visually pleasant solution, javascritp and ajax heavy and that relies the fewest is possible on server and reloading of the pages.

• Gnome, Desktop, Gui, Menu Panel : Upgrading from 10.04 to 11.04

  After upgrading from ubuntu 10.04 to ubuntu 11.04, my gnome (Desktop) is completely messed up. Because I was hesitant to remove all the packages that were on y desktop. I chose to keep all the dependent files during my upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04. After the upgrade my GUI is simply not working. I think it's because of the conflicting files that I choose to keep while upgrading. I can launch nautilus manually,but still I don't have access to any of the menus available in ubuntu. Is there a way I can upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 and restore my GUI. I tried to upgrade using aptitude, but it doesn't detect the latest ubuntu release, is there a way I can specify where to find the latest release as well get my GUI back ?

• Not getting GUI mode on ubuntu 12.04 desktop edition after installation on vmware workstation 7

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04 desktop edition on my PC using VMWare workstation 7. I assigned 1GB RAM and 20 GB Hard disk to Ubuntu. While starting Ubuntu virtual machine, It is not starting up with GUI mode. In is prompting me my Login ID in textual mode always. After waiting for long time as well the GUI mode is not appearing. I tried running sudo apt-get install updates sudo apt-get install xinit sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop Honestly, i don't know the meaning of all these.I am very new to ubuntu.Please help me here what to do?   I have hp pavilion 15 n204tx, which came with pre-installed Ubuntu OS. I formatted it and installed Win 8 64bit. and created 3 + 1(system reserve) partition. 50GB for win8 50GB for Ubuntu remaining for my files and other is system reserve. But now i need ubuntu-12.10-desktop also, along with win8. Is there is a way to install ubuntu-12.10-desktop, without affecting my files and win8 on second 50GB partition. Is the installation method is same as of other similar questions here. Please answer and i don't know anything about commands posted on other answers here, i just started to learn UNIX. So kindly tell where and how to use commands, if any Thank you

• How to install the full Gnome 3 desktop in ubuntu

  Just like the title says. I don't want just Gnome Shell I want to know how to install the whole entire desktop, with the latest GDM(not the 3.0.4 currently in the repos), all the default apps, all of it. I want to have a gnome desktop as pure as the latest Fedora, but of course I don't actually want to use fedora I been a Ubuntu user for years. Any ideas? or am I crazy? I cant find anyone else doing this, though I have found a few other people who want to do it. I currently have Gnome Shell 3.4, but I cant figure out how to install the new login screen, and I don't know what apps install by default other than epiphany and empathy, I also don't know if there is still more missing than just those things listed. I would really enjoy the full Gnome 3 experience.

• Licensing approach for .NET library that might be used desktop / web-service / cloud environment

  I am looking for advice how to architect licensing for a .NET library. I am not asking for tool/service recommendations or something like that. My library can be used in a regular desktop application, in an ASP.NET solution. And now Azure services come into play. Currently, for desktop applications the library checks if the application and company names from the version history are the same as the names the key was generated for. In other cases the library compares hardware IDs. Now there are problems: an Azure-enabled web-application can be run on different hardware each time (AFAIK) sometimes the hardware ID for the same hardware changes unexpectedly checking the hardware ID or version info might not be allowed in some circumstances (shared hosting for example) So, I am thinking about what approach I can take to architect a licensing scheme that: is friendly to customers (I do not try to fight piracy, but I do want to warn the customer if he uses the library on more servers than he paid for) can be used when there is no internet connection can be used on shared hosting What would you recommend?

  Excerpt from Profit Magazine - by David Rosenbaum When Marcos Baccetto was first asked to be the business-side project lead on Eaton Corporation’s Vehicle Group South America (VGSA) Oracle project, the operations services manager responsible for running manufacturing was, he confesses, “a little afraid” because of his lack of IT experience. Today, Baccetto calls the project “a fantastic experience,” and he is a true believer in the benefits of a close relationship between IT implementers and their line-of-business peers. Through his partnership with Jesiele Lima, then VGSA IT manager, Baccetto and Eaton’s South American operations team came to understand several important principles of business and IT. Here he shares nine tips managers should consider when working on an enterprise technology project. 1. Make it a business project, not an IT project. All levels of functional management must have ownership, responsibility, and accountability for the success of the implementation. 2. Share responsibility. Business owners should sign off on tests and data conversion. 3. Clean your data. Dedicating a team to improve core data quality prior to project launch can be a significant time-saver. 4. Select resources properly. Have functional people who can translate business needs to IT and can influence organizational change. 5. Manage scope. Follow project management methodologies and disciplines. 6. Adopt common processes, global solutions. Avoid customized, local solutions. The big-picture business goals can get lost in the details. 7. Implement processes prior to the go-live date. Change management can be key. Keep the workforce informed and train users in advance. 8. Define metrics milestones.
