Why do this work? int *var; while(scanf("%d", &var) && *var != 0) printf("%d \n", var); While this does not? int *var; while(scanf("%d", &var) && var != 0) printf("%d \n", var); Doesn't * (dereference operator) give you the value pointed by the pointer? So why does *var != 0 crash the program, while var != 0 does not?

How to add an audio filter to AudioRecord (on Android)?

I would like to write a "daemon" application that will add a special audio filter (e.g. audio enhancement) to AudioRecord. The result should be as follows: Whenever any VoIP application (e.g. Skype,...) will create an AudioRecord, the captured audio will be first filtered using my daemon application before it reaches Skype. Is this doable ? For example can I use an AudioSessionID=0 to attach my filter to all the input channels ?

Django date filter: how come the format used is different from the one in datetime library?

For formatting a date using date filter you must use the following format : {{ my_date|date:"Y-m-d" }} If you use strftime from the standard datetime, you have to use the following : my_date.strftime("%Y-%m-%d") So my question is ... isn't it ugly (I guess it is because of the % that is used also for tags, and therefore is escaped or something) ? But that's not the main question ... I would like to use the same DATE_FORMAT parametrized in settings.py all over the project, but it therefore seems that I cannot ! Is there a work around (for example a filter that removes the % after the date has been formatted like {{ my_date|date|dream_filter }}, because if I just use DATE_FORMAT = "%Y-%m-%d" I got something like %2001-%6-%12)?

I have a submenu that has all items linked to the same node, but with different additional parameters, for ex: ... <li...><a href = "/?q=page1&filter=10" class = "... active">Item1</a></li> <li...><a href = "/?q=page1&filter=11" class = "... active">Item2</a></li> ... in this case all items have class 'active' and none of them has class 'active-trail'. Is there any way to identify the true active link (for styling purposes)? any suggestions will be much appreciated!

Why is there a /etc/init.d/mysql file on this Slackware machine? How could it have gotten there?

A client of my IT-consulting service owns a web-development shop. He's been having problems with a Slackware 12.0 server running MySQL 5.0.67. The machine was set up by the client's sysadmin, who left on bad terms. My client no longer employs a sysadmin. How to loop through all illustrator files in a folder (CS6)

I have written some JavaScript to save .ai files to two separate locations with different resolutions, one of them being cropped to a reduced size art board. (Courtesy of John Otterud / Articmill for the main part). There are other variables in the script that I am not using at present but I want to leave the functionality there for a later date/additional layers to export/other resolutions etc. I can't get it to loop through all files in a folder. I cannot find the script that works - or insert it at the right place. I can get as far a selecting the folder and I suppose creating an array but after that what next? Working with Tile Notifications in Windows 8 Store Apps – Part I

One of the features that really makes Windows 8 apps stand out from others is the tile functionality on the start screen. While icons allow a user to start an application, tiles provide a more engaging way to engage the user and draw them into an application. Examples of “live” tiles on part of my current start screen are shown next: I’ll admit that if you get enough of these tiles going the start screen can actually be a bit distracting. Fortunately, a user can easily disable a live tile by right-clicking on it or pressing and holding a tile on a touch device and then selecting Turn live tile off from the AppBar: The can also make a wide tile smaller (into a square tile) or make a square tile bigger assuming the application supports both squares and rectangles. In this post I’ll walk through how to add tile notification functionality into an application. Both XAML/C# and HTML/JavaScript apps support live tiles and I’ll show the code for both options. Understanding Tile Templates The first thing you need to know if you want to add custom tile functionality (live tiles) into your application is that there is a collection of tile templates available out-of-the-box. Each tile template has XML associated with it that you need to load, update with your custom data, and then feed into a tile update manager. By doing that you can control what shows in your app’s tile on the Windows 8 start screen. So how do you learn more about the different tile templates and their respective XML? Fortunately, Microsoft has a nice documentation page in the Windows 8 Store SDK. Visit http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/hh761491.aspx to see a complete list of square and wide/rectangular tile templates that you can use. Looking through the templates you’ll It has the following XML template associated with it: <tile> <visual> <binding template="TileSquareBlock"> <text id="1">Text Field 1</text> <text id="2">Text Field 2</text> </binding> </visual> </tile> An example of a wide/rectangular tile template is shown next: <tile> <visual> <binding template="TileWideImageAndText01"> <image id="1" src="image1.png" alt="alt text"/> <text id="1">Text Field 1</text> </binding> </visual> </tile> To use these tile templates (or others you find interesting), update their content, and get them to show for your app’s tile on the Windows 8 start screen you’ll need to perform the following steps: Define the tile template to use in your app Load the tile template’s XML into memory Modify the children of the <binding> tag Feed the modified tile XML into a new TileNotification instance Feed the TileNotification instance into the Update() method of the TileUpdateManager In the remainder of the post I’ll walk through each of the steps listed above to provide wide and square tile notifications for an application. The wide tile that’s shown will show an image and text while the square tile will only show text. If you’re going to provide custom tile notifications it’s recommended that you provide wide and square tiles since users can switch between the two of them directly on the start screen. Note: When working with tile notifications it’s possible to manipulate and update a tile’s XML template without having to know XML parsing techniques. This can be accomplished using some C# notification extension classes that are available. In this post I’m going to focus on working with tile notifications using an XML parser so that the focus is on the steps required to add notifications to the Windows 8 start screen rather than on external extension classes. You can access the extension classes in the Windows 8 samples gallery if you’re interested. Steps to Create Custom App Tile Notifications Step 1: Define the tile template to use in your app Although you can cut-and-paste a tile template’s XML directly into your C# or HTML/JavaScript Windows store app and then parse it using an XML parser, it’s easier to use the built-in TileTemplateType enumeration from the Windows.UI.Notifications namespace. Can you have a WMI query for GPO Filter based on user's OU?

I'm wondering if there is a way to have a WMI query check the OU of the user logging on. I'd like a GPO (linked to Citrix servers OU) to apply only to users if the user is in a certain OU - this is for Citrix so the overly obvious answer of - well just link it to the OU the user is in does not apply. This also cannot be done using security groups because a long time ago those started to get used as Distribution Groups also and now too many are widely inaccurate. Lastly I need to apply this to the entire GPO as there are more than just group policy preferences included so I can't use the item-level targeting feature either. But my OUs are accurate so I'd like to use those if I can. I'd like a WMI query filter to say, apply GPO if user is member of OU 'x' that doable?

Image manipulation filter needed: unobtrusively hide an area by blurring or smudging?

I would like to hide an empty area of a panorama stitched with hugin (using the GIMP). Hide in the sense of blending it in unobtrusively. I.e. fill the area with the average color of the surroundings and blur it. Or manually smudge the surroundings into the empty area. Is there a filter/plug-in that automatically smudges/blurs the edges into the area? Not looking for seam carving. Thanks.

Can I filter multiple column headers to display subheadings of each in Excel?

I can't seem to find this anywhere... it may not even be possible without coding? I have a spreadsheet containing more than one heading in a single column. These headings are identified with blue background and white font. Each of these headings have items listed below them. These "subheadings" are smaller, auto-black font and no fill background. Currently I have to scroll down the spreadsheet to view all headers and their contents. How do I create a filter that would allow me to sort on whichever header I want, so that (only) the contents of that particular header are displayed?

Generate a Constant expression from a function

For my Google Wave robot, on the onDocumentChanged event I want to apply a filter as follows: @Capability(filter = FILTER) @Override public void onDocumentChanged(DocumentChangedEvent event) { ... } I want the filter to be generated the first time the robot is run, which I'm trying to do as follows: private static final String FILTER = generateFilter(); private static final String generateFilter(){ ... } However, it complains FILTER isn't a constant expression when used within @Capability. generateFilter() will return the same string every time it is called, I'm only using it to create the string so that when I make changes, I don't need to worry about updating the filter. Now I could be going about this all wrong, so wondered if anyone knew what I'm doing wrong, or knew a better way in which I could generate a constant expression from the function.

I load the file with that: $xml = simplexml_load_file('flash/datas/datas.xml'); And the access my content like that: $descText = $xml->aboutModule->chocolaterie->desc The text from desc is well registred in my $descText, but all the <br/> of the text disappear... So my long text is on a single line, not so good :-/ Do you know how to solve that? Is there a special traitement to do one the $xml var? Or someting else? Thank you in advance for your help!

ORDER BY job failed in the Pig script while running EmbeddedPig using Java

I have this following pig script, which works perfectly using grunt shell (stored the results to HDFS without any issues); however, the last job (ORDER BY) failed if I ran the same script using Java EmbeddedPig. If I replace the ORDER BY job by others, such as GROUP or FOREACH GENERATE, the whole script then succeeded in Java EmbeddedPig. So I think it's the ORDER BY which causes the issue. Anyone has any experience with this? Any help would be appreciated! Using RIA DomainServices with ASP.NET and MVC 2

Recently, I started working on a new ASP.NET MVC 2 project and I wanted to reuse the data access (LINQ to SQL) and business logic methods (WCF RIA Services) that had been developed for a previous project that used Silverlight for the front-end. I figured that I would be able to instantiate the various DomainService classes from within my controller’s action methods, because after all, the code for those services didn’t look very complicated. WRONG! I didn’t realize at first that some of the functionality is handled automatically by the framework when the domain services are hosted as WCF services. After some initial searching, I came across an invaluable post by Joe McBride, which described how to get RIA Service .svc files to work in an MVC 2 Web Application, and another by Brad Abrams. Unfortunately, Brad’s solution was for an earlier preview release of RIA Services and no longer works with the version that I am running (PDC Preview). I have not tried the RC version of WCF RIA Services, so I am not sure if any of the issues I am having have been resolved, but I wanted to come up with a way to reuse the shared libraries so I wouldn’t have to write a non-RIA version that basically did the same thing. The classes I came up with work with the scenarios I have encountered so far, but I wanted to go ahead and post the code in case someone else is having the same trouble I had. Hopefully this will save you a few headaches! 1. Querying When I first tried to use a DomainService class to perform a query inside one of my controller’s action methods, I got an error stating that “This DomainService has not been initialized.” To solve this issue, I created an extension method for all DomainServices that creates the required DomainServiceContext and passes it to the service’s Initialize() method. Insert / Update / Delete Once I got the records showing up, I was trying to insert new records or update existing data when I ran into the next issue. I say issue because I wasn’t getting any kind of error, which made it a little difficult to track down. But once I realized that that the DataContext.SubmitChanges() method gets called automatically at the end of each domain service submit operation, I could start working on a way to mimic the behavior of a hosted domain service. What I came up with, was a base class called LinqToSqlRepository<T> that basically sits between your implementation and the default LinqToSqlDomainService<T> class. I also added a couple of DataContext (for Table<T>) extension methods called TryAttach that will check to see if the supplied entity is already attached before attempting to attach it, which would cause an error! 3. LinqToSqlRepository<T> Below is the code for the LinqToSqlRepository class. Conclusion So there you have it, a fully functional Repository implementation for your RIA Domain Services that can be consumed by your ASP.NET and MVC applications. I have uploaded the source code along with unit tests and a sample web application that queries the Customers table from inside a Controller, as well as a Silverlight usage example. Pet Peeves with the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace

Have you ever noticed how something things just gnaw at your very being. This is the case with the WP7 marketplace, the Zune software, and the things that drive me batshit crazy with a side of fries. To go. I wanted to share. XBox Live is Not the Centre of the Universe Okay, it’s fine that the Zune software has an XBox live tag for games so can see them clearly but do we really need to have it shoved down our throats. On every click? Click on Games in the marketplace: The first thing that it defaults to on the filters on the right is XBox Live: Okay. Fine. However if you change it (say to Paid) then click onto a title when you come back from that title is the filter still set to Paid? No. It’s back to XBox Live again. Really? Give us a break. If you change to any filter on any other genre then click on the selected title, it doesn’t revert back to anything. It stays on the selection you picked. Let’s be fair here. The Games genre should behave just like every other one. If I pick Paid then when I come back to the list please remember that. Double Dipping On the subject of XBox Live titles, Microsoft (and developers who have an agreement with Microsoft to produce Live titles, which generally rules out indie game developers) is double dipping with regards to exposure of their titles. Here’s the Puzzle and Trivia Game section on the Marketplace for XBox Live titles: And here’s the same category filtered on Paid titles: See the problem? Two indie titles while the rest are XBox Live ones. So while XBL has it’s filter, they also get to showcase their wares in the Paid and Free filters as well. If you’re going to have an XBox Live filter then use it and stop pushing down indie titles until they’re off the screen (on some genres this is already the case). Free and Paid titles should be just that and not include XBox Live ones. If you’re really stoked that people can’t find the Free XBox Live titles vs. the paid ones, then create a Free XBox Live filter and a Paid XBox Live filter. I don’t think we would mind much. Whose Trial is it Anyways? You might notice apps in the marketplace with titles like “My Fart App Professional Lite” or “Silicon Lamb Spleen Builder Free”. When you submit and app to the marketplace it can either be free or paid. If it’s a paid app you also have the option to submit it with Trial capabilities. It’s up to you to decide what you offer in the trial version but trial versions can be purchased from within the app so after someone trys out your app (for free) and wants to unlock the Super Secret Obama Spy Ring Level, they can just go to the marketplace from your app (if you built that functionality in) and upgrade to the paid version. However it creates a rift of sorts when it comes to visibility. Some developers go the route of the paid app with a trial version, others decide to submit *two* apps instead of one. One app is the “Free” or “Lite” verions and the other is the paid version. Why go to the hassle of submitting two apps when you can just create a trial version in the same app? Again, visibility. There’s no way to tell Paid apps with Trial versions and ones without (it’s an option, you don’t have to provide trial versions, although I think it’s a good idea). However there is a way to see the Free apps from the Paid ones so some submit the two apps and have the Free version have links to buy the paid one (again through the Marketplace tasks in the API). What we as developers need for visibility is a new filter. Trial. That’s it. It would simply filter on Paid apps that have trial capabilities and surface up those apps just like the free ones. If Microsoft added this filter to the marketplace, it would eliminate the need for people to submit their “Free” and “Lite” versions and make it easier for the developer not to have to maintain two systems. I mean, is it really that hard? Can’t be any more difficult than the XBox Live Filter that’s already there. Location is Everything The last thing on my bucket list is about location. When I launch Zune I’m running in my native location setting, Canada. What’s great is that I navigate to the Travel Tools section where I have one of my apps and behold the splendour that I see: There are my apps in the number 1 and number 4 slot for top selling in that category. I show it to my wife to make up for the sleepless nights writing this stuff and we dance around and celebrate. Then I change my location on my operation system to United States and re-launch Zune. WTF? My flight app has slipped to the 10th spot (I’m only showing 4 across here out of the 7 in Zune) and my border check app that was #1 is now in the 32nd spot! End of celebration. Not only is relevance being looked at here, I value the comments people make on may apps as do most developers. I want to respond to them and show them that I’m listening. The next version of my border app will provide multiple camera angles. However when I’m running in my native Canada location, I only see two reviews. Changing over to United States I see fourteen! While there are tools out there to provide with you a unified view, I shouldn’t have to rely on them. My own Zune desktop software should allow me to see everything. I realize that some developers will submit an app and only target it for some locations and that’s their choice. However I shouldn’t have to jump through hoops to see what apps are ahead of mine, or see people comments and ratings. Another proposal. Either unify the marketplace (i.e. when I’m looking at it show me everything combined) or let me choose a filter. I think the first option might be difficult as you’re trying to average out top selling apps across all markets and have to deal with some apps that have been omitted from some markets. Although I think you could come up with a set of use cases that would handle that, maybe that’s too much work. At the very least, let us developers view the markets in a drop down or something from within the Zune desktop. Having to shut down Zune, change our location, and re-launch Zune to see other perspectives is just too onerous. A Call to Action These are just one mans opinion. Do you agree? Disagree?
