  The properties service (configured in properties-service.xml) in JBoss application server lets you specify external .properties files that are loaded and can then be accessed as system properties from the deployed applications. (See here http://community.jboss.org/wiki/PropertiesService for more info...) Is it also possible to load config files in the .xml format instead of .properties? I know it is possible for certain given configs like for example the mail-service.xml and the jboss-log4j.xml... But they are both loaded directly by JBoss, and not via the properties service.

  So my setup: Services are shared between all hosts (CPU/RAM/Disk/Services). Hosts are split into two main groups: "Production" and "Development". We have two contact groups: "Production" and "Development". Lets say my development SQL server runs low on RAM, I want it to only alert those in "Development" contact group (this service is of course assigned to a host in the "Development" host group, using the shared RAM monitoring service). I'm pretty much stumped on this... I can't configure it at the service level (they're shared there), and I can't seem to get escalations to do it for me either... Do I need to use service groups along with escalations and bite the bullet on building that list? Or am I missing something stupidly simple? I'm using Centreon for configuration if that helps.

  I'm not clear on how to start a service when the server boots, I read on some of the other questions asked about adding the script to /etc/init.d, but It's just one line that I need to execute in the commandline: sudo /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon restart But I have a few issues with this, firstly, I apparently need to use sudo, and it gives me the following: ngl-server-01:~% sudo /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon start Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service(8) utility, e.g. service avahi-daemon start Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an Upstart job, you may also use the start(8) utility, e.g. start avahi-daemon But when I try just avahi-daemon start I get: Too many arguments Why is this? and how would you start this service?

• High latency issue for web service call from amazon aws ec2 to local server

  We have a legacy web application that is running in our data center on premises located in Houston. We have a developed a new .net 4 based web application in order to provide new features to customers. The new web application is hosted in amazon aws ec2 environment (N. Virginia region us-east-1b zone). In order to get seamlessly integrate with the legacy application the new web application makes web service calls to retrieve data. We are seeing an unusually high latency time in the order of 5+ seconds for these web service calls. The exact same web service call returns in less than a second on our local PCs (which makes sense given physical proximity to the actual server). The weird part is that we have developers in California who also have the same milliseconds response time. We are testing the web service response using third party tools such as SoapUI, Google Chrome extensions such as Advanced REST Client, Postman REST Client, etc. As if this wasnt weird enough, we have noticed the same low latency from certain other ec2 instances while testing which are in the same region and availability zone as well. If we experienced the high latency consistently from all the ec2 instances I could understand. But there is something else going on. Comparing the various stats and results between the low latency and high latency ec2 servers do not show any significant differences: ping (constant 40ms), tracert, winmtr, etc. We have instances that are in the VPC as well. So I tried both the public and private IP address of the web service host server and that didnt make a difference either for the above results. We need to resolve this latency issue as this is causing the resulting web pages to load very slowly (almost 15+ seconds which is simply unacceptable). The ec2 instances have Windows Server Datacenter 64 bit. Let me know if there is any other infor I can provide to help diagnose this.

• How to automatically restart RRAS service after OpenVPN

  I have OpenVPN set up on a Windows Server 2003 box using a routed configuration. This allows users to connect and access the work LAN subnet. There are remote hosts/services however that are only accessible when used via the work network. To enable access these, I push routes out to the clients to make sure traffic to these destinations goes across the VPN, and NAT the traffic using RRAS. This all works, except: if I restart the OpenVPN service, network traffic stops working until I restart the RRAS service as well. Is there a good way for me to make the RRAS service start/restart after OpenVPN? Are service dependencies the way to go? Obviously I could write a batch file to do this, but I'd like to make the process as bullet-proof and obvious as I can so it doesn't cause problems for other admins.

• Windows running service as "system" when log on as is "user"

  I have an apache service that is running as "SYSTEM", however the log on as settings are configured to run as my user account. The windows task manager claims that I am the user name associated with the service when it's running, however I had the apache service call a python script which indicates that the user is "SYSTEM. Any ideas on how to fix this? I've reinstalled 3 times and once with a newer version.

• AWS own email domain and some generic questions

  I'm getting started with Amazon Web Services and I have a few question I'm not sure about. As every (company) webpage I want to use an "[email protected]" email adress, but how is that done? I looked up at godaddy.com (for domain registration), the offer me an email adress like I want, but for 3 dollars per month. Is this possible with AWS? Because at AWS you have just a complex domain which is not very userfriendly or serious. Also I want to host my dynamic webpage on the amazon cloud, but I'm not sure if I'm doing that right. I've read many guides, and all I know is that I have to purchase a Elastic Compute Cloud, and a Simple Storage Service... and every guide is working with the basic linux package, why not Windows? Is it more expensive? I just want to host a mySQL Server for the dynamic webpage, which is reached over a normal domain. And one last question, if I sign up for an AWS account it asks me for an email account. But I found it a little bit unserious to write there my free-webmailer-adress... How is it done the normal way?   I know that zeroconf does automatic service location on the local network. But what does it mean? For example there is a printer (printing is the service that it does). This printer choose randomly an IP for itself. It asks other devices if this IP is already occupied. If not, the printer occupies this IP. Then printer says to "everybody" that "printing" service is associated with this IP. Is it "automatic service location"? Or I got something wrong?

• “NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON” error in Windows 7 (ASP.NET & Web Service)

  I have an asp.net web app which works fine in Windows XP machine in a domain. I am porting it to a Windows 7 stand alone machine. The app uses a web service which makes a call to sql server. The web server (IIS 7.5) and SQL Server are on the same stand alone machine. I enabled Windows authentication for the website and web service. The web service uses a trusted connection connection string. The web service credentials uses System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials. I noticed username, password and domainname are blank after the call! The webservice and web site use the 'Classic .NET AppPool' with NetworkServices identity. I am getting an exception "NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON" in the database call in the web service. I am assuming it's related to the blank credentials. I am expecting ASPNET user to be the security token to the database. Why is this not happening? Did I miss a setting? (Usually this happens when sql server and web server are on two different machines in a domain, delegation & double hopping, but in my case everything is on a dev box)

  My SQL Server Windows service is set to use the NETWORK SERVICE account. The server is installed to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL. However looking at the permissions on that folder, NETWORK SERVICE does not have any permissions. The groups which are allowed access to that folder are... CREATOR OWNER - who is this? SYSTEM - sounds fine - so that Windows can access the folder I presume? SQLServerMSSQLUser$Computer_Name$MSSQLSERVER - this is the interesting one - what is this? Administrators Users If NETWORK SERVICE is a user with minimal permissions on the system and looks to the O/S as someone connecting from a network how does it have permissions to access any files in the SQL Server install folder?   When installing MS SQL Server 2008, one needs to associate a service account with the installation (possibly even several accounts, one for the SQL Server Agent, one for Analysis Services, ..., but let's leave that for the case of simplicity). The service account may be local account, or a Windows domain account. If a domain account is used: Can MSSQL start, if connectivity to the domain controllers is temporarily down? If the answer is yes: Should each DBMS instance on each server have a separate account, or does it make sense to use a particular "MSSQL" domain account on all MSSQL-installations in the organization? If separate accounts are used for each instance on each server: Does it make sense to create a special MSSQL security group in the domain and place all the MSSQL service accounts in that group, perhaps to ease replication, etc? Is there a common, generally accepted naming convention for MSSQL service account(s)?

  Normally we create service accounts in Active Directory, and if we install things like SQL Server, etc, we set the software services we set them to use those service accounts. The service accounts don't have the ability to be used to log into a workstation interactively. For Proof of concepts, we're installing SQL Server and other software on Virtual windows 7 workstations that aren't part of a domain, so we are creating local accounts that will be used by windows services. Is it possible to stop those users from appearing as options on the login screen?

• Fonts not found when print request comes from a child process of a Service

  I have a strange issue on a Windows Server 2003 box which has been baffling me for days now. I have a service running on the machine which calls a specified exe every 60 seconds, the exe looks at a local database to see if it needs to print anything, and if so, it prints it to a network laser printer. The problem i'm having is that some fonts won't print out when the exe is called automatically by the service, but work fine if I double click the exe to run it. The font was installed by Administrator, but the service runs as NT Authority\System. I thought this might have something to do with it, but I tried running the service as Administrator, and that didn't solve it. Are there any issues with fonts and permissions that i'm not aware of that could be causing this behaviour?

Manually I stop the web server by pressing CTRL+C in the dos window. How can I stop the server now as it started via service?
