• Ubuntu 12.10 wont boot

  im new to using Ubuntu and just bought a HP Pavilion g6-2240sa with windows 8 pre installed. I made a bootable USB with Ubuntu on it and installed alsongside windows, for 2 days it worked fine, I got into Ubuntu by doing an advanced restart from windows 8 and then booting Ubuntu from the partition it made. When i did the advanced restart today there was only 1 HDD i could select ( there were 3 before windows, a restore partition that was already there when i got the computer and Ubuntu) so i booted from the USB again and re-installed Ubuntu. then did an advanced restart and the 3 partitions where there again, i booted from Ubuntu and now heres my problem. I get the Ubuntu background when its loading then its just a black screen with some writing, its not on long enough to read, then just a black screen with a white _ and the top left corner that does nothing, i have to restat the computer and it auto boots into windows 8. im a little confused as the first time i installed Ubuntu it worked fine until the partition dissaperd), the second time i installed i did everything the same except it found the old Ubuntu so i reinstalled it and now is donst work.

• htaccess 301 redirect help needed

  Due to some issues in my site many pages are visible as duplicate using : www.example.com/page.html?task=view but it's content is exactly same as www.example.com/page.html. One way is to use http 301 redirect from www.example.com/page.html?task=view to www.example.com/page.html when anybody fetches page with arguments. But links like www.example.com/page.html?task=view will remain visible to outside world. Another way is canonicalization which I don't want to use as it is difficult to insert the tag in Joomla CMS. I want to hide www.example.com/page.html?task=view from external world. Is it possible to change the url from www.example.com/page.html?task=view to www.example.com/page.html ? I mean if there is href link of www.example.com/page.html?task=view in my web page, it should be visible to external world as without any arguments. This is different from using 301 to convert externally accessed page : www.example.com/page.html?task=view to without using arguments in .htaccess.

• Naming interfaces for persistent values

  I have 2 distinct types of persistent values that I'm having trouble naming well. They're defined with the following Java-esque structure, borrowing Guava's Optional for the example and using generic names to avoid anchoring: interface Foo<T> { T get(); void set(T value); } interface Bar<T> { Optional<T> get(); void set(T value); } With Foo, if the value hasn't been set explicitly then there's some default value available or pre-set. With Bar, if the value hasn't been set explicitly then there's a distinct "no value" state. I'm trying to optimize the names for their call sites. For example, someone using Foo may not care whether there's a default value involved, only that they're guaranteed to always have a value. How would you go about naming these interfaces?

• Should I understand SVN before I jump to GIT?

  I work in a department where no one has ever used source control before, including myself. I am trying to push the concept. I have spent a little while researching SVN. I some basics learned. I can Create/update/checkout/commit with command line and from Tortoise. I am starting to learn how to tag and branch but still confused a lot about conflicts between branches and trunk etc. I am still learning, but I do not have a physical person who can show me anything. Its all from books/tutorials and trial and error. From what I have read online it seems like git is the better thing to know, but its also more complicated. I don't want to overwhelm myself. Should I continue to master svn before moving to git or would I be wiser to just jump to git now? Are there pros and cons to both approaches?

• Dropbox install stuck at 99%, how do I fix it? (and any dpkg errors)

  I tried to install Dropbox using How to install Dropbox?, or with apt-get install nautilus-dropbox. Dropbox loads until 99% and then hangs, causing the system to go to 100% cpu usage. If I reboot or close the terminal, I sometimes get dpkg errors which prevent me from using apt-get or Software Center to perform any package management functions. I would like to resolve all these and just get Dropbox working. How do I do that? Note: This question is possibly answered in two parts: The accepted answer tells you how to install Dropbox. But if you have dpkg errors, see this answer before you use answer 1 to install Dropbox.

• MacVim commands not working in insert mode

  The following shortcuts I have defined in my settings: "Select next/prev tabs noremap <C-Tab> :tabnext<CR> noremap <C-S-Tab> :tabprev<CR> are for going to the previous and next tabs of open files. The only annoying thing about it is anytime I want to switch tabs, I have to first get out of insert mode. How can I force MacVim to register these shortcuts even if I'm in insert mode?

• How to hide the admin login form?

  In my website there are no accounts except for those of moderators and administrators. That's why I don't want to show the login form to everyone but to these people. I thought of using a weird URL for the login form like www.example.com/1a79a4d60de6718e8e5b326e338ae533 that only admins and mods would know. But it's a quite impractical solution, besides if someone would want to login in another computer and forgets this URL, then is unable to. Is there any more effective way?

• What is a good listserv replacement?

  A board I'm on has about 700 - 1300 members being served from a listserv maintained by a company one of our board members is on. This restricts the ability of other board members to use the listserv unless they are employees of the company. They want to move to a system where anyone can administer the list. I'm thinking of switching to Constant Contact or Google Groups. We want something that allows list members to manage their own contact preferences and enables anyone authorized to send emails to the list.

• Do I need multiple accounts in Facebook for each of my product site?

  I've a dozen sites which include for-profit ones as well as for charity. For each site I've created a Facebook company/charity account. After creating those accounts it dawned on me that I could as well have created a new page for each of my site from my personal account only even if a site has multiple product pages. What'll be the right strategy? Also as per Facebook terms we can have only single personal account. I do have single personal account only but for each site I've created only company pages. I hope I'm not violating the facebook terms.

• Just installed 12.10 with WUBI and get error

  Goes to the terminal screen and says: [drm:drm_crtc_helper_set_config] ERROR failed to set mode on 'crtc:10] From what I gather, this is an issue with my monitor. Not sure. I am really new to this. I have a Compaq Presario running XP SP3 and am using a Sony Bravia 32" LCD TV as a monitor. Downloaded Ubuntu from, well,... Ubuntu. Used WUBI to install. I suppose it created its own partition because install never asked. Is there a work-around for this? I have tried everything I know of, given my very limited experience. Thanks in advance.

• Ubuntu 12.04 UEFI Partition Boot Fail

  I've built a new system, and I want to take full advantage of UEFI and Ubuntu. So I install Ubuntu, and try to boot from it, and my BIOS (Asus EZ Mode / Advanced Mode) simply says "No bootable medium found. Insert Bootable Medium and press any key to try again." So I've reinstalled several times, without any failures, Ubuntu IS installed, and I've tried Ubuntu Boot Repair (link below) and nothing I do seems to work. • How to give Apache access to files in my home directory?

I have a collection of zip files in a folder in my home directory (~/zip_files) which I would like to be able to link to through apache, such that when somebody who visits my website which I'm using Apache to host clicks a link to one of the zip files, he can download it through the web. • Unique string values in range

  I have some spreadsheets where there are large number of cells that have essentially been used for free text. There is a finite set of values for this free text and most, if not all repeat. eg. A B C D 1 Monkey Gorilla Cat Dog 2 Dog Cat Gorilla Gorilla 3 Dog Dog Dog Cat There are probably 50 or so different cell values spread over multiple sheets and hundreds of rows and columns. I need to analyse this data and count occurancies, which is not a problem other than getting a list of unique values to start with and this has been driving me up the wall. What is the best way to produce this list. So from the above we would have Monkey Dog Cat Gorilla In order of preferred solutions, as this will need to be done monthly. With so much attention being given to COLUMNSTORE and in-memory tables and stored procedures, it is easy to overlook how important tempdb is to performance. Speeding up tempdb I/O improves performance. The best way to do this is to not do the I/O in the first place. With SQL Server 2014, tempdb page management is smarter.   The “Lessons Learned” blog has an update covering the error message "The protocol 'net.msmq' is not supported." "The protocol 'net.msmq' is not supported." OMG, a new lesson! Will wonders never cease? So I ran into an interesting issue setting up a WCF service to consume an MSMQ queue. I won't bother you with the details of how to actually build a WCF/MSMQ service; there are plenty of tutorials on the subject. I want to share with you an interesting error that I ran into and the surprisingly simple fix. The error occurs when attempting to generate a Service Reference or even simply browsing to the WSDL of your WCF/MSMQ service in the form of a YSOD with the following error: "The protocol 'net.msmq' is not supported." After a lot of Googling on the subject turning up plenty of questions with the same error but no answers. So I went digging into some application level config files on a server that already had a WCF/MSMQ service successfully set up by the network admin, and the answer was amazingly simple: If you are hosting an MSMQ/WCF service in IIS, you have to tell IIS to allow net.msmq protocol. It's in the advanced settings for the application or site in which you are hosting the service. .... aaaand, that's it.

• Safari Private Browsing and gmail

  I have two gmail accounts. If I follow the following steps then Safari will not let me log in to any other gmail account Go the gmail, log in as user1 Enable Private browsing Go to one website Disable Private browsing Go to gmail and logout. At this point gmail will not let me switch to user2. I have to quit the whole browser before I get that option. Is there a way to fix this? I am not trying to open two gmail accounts at the same time. Just one after the other. As long as I do not enter Private Browsing mode between the two logins I can switch between account1 and account2. Also, I am not changing browser to Firefox
