  I'm writing an android app that has a standard activity, but also needs to monitor incoming/outgoing calls and texts at all times. In addition, the app needs to notify users of information once a day without having the activity open. The information it notifies users of is stored in a database, so communication with the activity is not necessary. I've been researching for a week and still can't decide how to go about doing this. My instinct tells me I need a remote service that has a constantly running broadcast receiver, but every remote service example I see is overly complicated. Could anyone help me better understand what steps I need to take? Thanks in advance.

  So we are defining out functional requirements for a user content site and would like to enable: 1) 3rd party developers to develop applications that users can use on their profile 2) Enable users to export content to other sites meaning share their photos on the net. So we were told we need to use APIs for this & it's merely changing data permissions. Is that the only thing we need? Is there a framekwrok we need to build out, or what is the process functioanlly to define out to make these happen? Platform is being built on MySQL and Cake php.

  Hi I am trying to send an int in my iphone game for game center multiplayer. The integer is coming up and appearing as an odd long integer value rather than the expected one. • movedown method not saving new position - cakephp tree

  Hi everyone, I am experiencing a problem that has popped up recently and is causing quite a bit of trouble for our system. The app we have relies on using the movedown method to organize content, but as of late it has stopped working and began to generate the following warning: Warning (2): array_values() [<a href='function.array-values'>function.array-values</a>]: The argument should be an array in [/usr/local/home/cake/cake_0_2_9/cake/libs/model/behaviors/tree.php, line 459] The line being referenced: list($node) = array_values($Model->find('first', array( 'conditions' => array($scope, $Model->escapeField() => $id), 'fields' => array($Model->primaryKey, $left, $right, $parent), 'recursive' => $recursive ))); The line calling the method: $this->movedown($id,abs((int)$position)); I have exhausted every idea I could come up with.   While reading a file I get broken UTF-8 String error whenever I have the following in my file través if I change it to normal e then it works. Whats the way to fix this? error only happens if I do line.lstrp or any other function. Just printing the lines is ok. problem even happens when I try to match the string with regex.

• MVC and binding to List of Checkboxes

  Here is my problem. I have a list of models that are displayed to the user. On the left is a checkbox for each model to indicate that the user wants to choose this model (in this case, we're building products a user can add to their shopping cart). The model has no concept of being chosen...it strictly has information about the product in question. I've talked with a few other developers after having gone through and the best I could come up with is getting the formcollection and string parsing the key values to determine whether the checkbox is checked or not. This doesn't seem ideal. I was thinking there would be something more strongly bound, but I can't figure out a way to do it. I tried creating another model that had a boolean property to represent being checked and a property of the model and passing a list of that model type to the view and creating a ActionResult on the controller that accepts a list of the new model / checked property, but it comes back null. Am I just thinking too much like web forms and should just continue on with parsing checkbox values? Here's what I've done for wrapping the models inside a collection: public class SelectableCollection[T] : IList[T] {} public class SelectableTrack{ public bool IsChecked{get;set;} public bool CurrentTrack{get;set;} } For the view, I inherit from ViewPage[SelectableCollection[SelectableTrack]] For the controller, I have this as the ActionResult: [HttpPost] public ActionResult SelectTracks(SelectableCollection sc) { return new EmptyResult(); } But when I break inside the ActionResult, the collection is null. Any reason why it isn't coming through?

• Designing for varying mobile device resolutions, i.e. iPhone 4 & iPhone 3G

  As the design community moves to design applications & interfaces for mobile devices, a new problem has arisen: Varying Screen DPI's. Here's the situation: Touch: * iPhone 3G/S ~ 160 dpi * iPhone 4 ~ 300 dpi * iPad ~ 126 dpi * Android device @ 480p ~ 200 dpi Point / click: * Laptop @ 720p ~ 96 dpi * Desktop @ 720p ~ 72 dpi There is certainly a clear distinction between desktop and mobile so having two separate front-ends to the same app is logical, especially when considering one is "touch"-based and the other is "point/click"-based. The challenge lies in designing static graphical elements that will scale between, say, 160 dpi and 300+ dpi, and get consistent and clean design across zoom levels. Any thoughts on how to approach this? Here are some scenarios, but each has drawbacks as well: * Design a single set of assets (high resolution), then adjust zoom levels based on detected resolution / device o Drawbacks: Performance caused by code layering, varying device support of Zoom * Develop & optimize multiple variations of image and CSS assets, then hide / show each based on device o Drawbacks: Extra work in design & QA. Anyone have thoughts or experience on how to deal with this? We should certainly be looking at methods that use / support HTML5 and CSS3.

• Beginner Access VBA SQL INSERT Question

  Syntax question: I am using the code below to call a query in Access VBA strSQL = "INSERT INTO tblLoanDetails ([ServerName]) VALUES ('Test') WHERE [ID]=3" Call CurrentDb.Execute(strSQL) And i am getting a runtime error of "3067: Query must contain atleast one table or query." the insert statement string looks like this (Threw the var into a text box): INSERT INTO tblLoanDetails ([ServerName]) VALUES ('Test') WHERE [ID]=3 I also tried adding a semi-colon to the end but with no luck. I also double checked to make sure my table is called tblLoanDetails and my Column names are ServerName, and ID Appreciate any help.

• Retrieve E-mail from server (pop3) by date for filtering on subject or body in C#

  I have a piece of monitoring software I am writing which needs to retrieve e-mails sent to an address for a certain day so that I can filter them by a regex in the subject or body. I don't need to retrieve the entire message, only the subject and body for all messages on a given day so that I can evaluate them with a regular expression for a token. I looked at EAGetMail as a solution, but their implementation doesn't do what I need to to do. I can only get all information on mail, which only has the size and index. I would need it by subject, but even then I don't want to get everything in inbox. If I went with this solution I have to get all mail, and then retrieve each mail message individually to evaluate the subject and body. This is not ideal. I also looked at OpenPop.Net, but it too does not have a targeted retrieval for today's messages only. Can I even do what I want without looping through every single email on the server until I find a match? What is the best way to accomplish what I am trying to do? Am I going to have to build a custom web request to get the data I want? Also, I looked at Chilkat, but I am looking for a free solution, even if it means building the http request myself.

Parse error: parse error in C:\wamp\www\game\mapArrayConvertor.php on line 36 EDIT: The OP notes in an answer below that the error was a missing semi-colon on line 35 and not the code included in the question.

• How to structure data... Sequential or Hierarchical?

  I'm going through the exercise of building a CMS that will organize a lot of the common documents that my employer generates each time we get a new sales order. Each new sales order gets a 5 digit number (12222,12223,122224, etc...) but internally we have applied a hierarchy to these numbers: + 121XX |--01 |--02 + 122XX |--22 |--23 |--24 In my table for sales orders, is it better to use the 5 digital number as an ID and populate up or would it be better to use the hierarchical structure that we use when referring to jobs in regular conversation? The only benefit to not populating sequentially seems to be formatting the data later on in my view, but that doesn't sound like a good enough reason to go through the extra work. Thanks

• PHP: Need a double check on an error in this small code

Can someone explain to me whats going on, I think it might be a syntax issue.

  I want to generate Entity Framework 4.0 classes from a (legacy) database from a command line, but I have 2 transformations I want: Tables/columns are lowerCamelCase and I want my classes/members to be UpperCamelCase. I want to suffix my classes with "Dto". Any idea how this might be accomplished? I'm a total newbie to EF, but I have a decent understanding of Linq to Sql and was able to accomplish the same task by doing: sqlmetal - dbml - xml mapping file and .cs file.

• Visual Studio 2010 haunted keyboard

  It seems the haunted keyboard is back in VS2010 ... after working on a web application for a short while I find that some keys just don't work, or are behaving like certain keys are stuck. This is only in VS, and I am definitely not triggering any keyboard changes in VS or Windows (I have disabled that in Windows) and I have reset my environment settings several times. Aargh! This is so frustrating ... anyone else getting this problem? Is there are solution?

• Can I suppress or enforce URLs to be prefaced with http:// in ALL browsers?

  I want to ensure that regardless of what browser a user is in, they all see the EXACT same characters in the URL bar. Most browsers show the preceding protocol type in the URL bar. However, Chrome for example truncates http:// (not sure about https) and starts with the domain name, ie: Chrome: stackoverflow.com/questions/ask Safari: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/ask So, is there a way to either suppress the http:// in all browsers, or even enforce it in all browsers? Preferably suppress.

• unit testing methods with arrays as argument

  I am porting over some C++ assembly to VB that performs demodulation of various waveforms. I decided to go the unit test route instead of building a test app to get a feel for how testing is performed. The original demodulation code accepts an array that is the waveform along with some other arguments. How should one go about performing a test on something that has an array as an argument? Is it acceptable to generate fake data in a file and read it in at the beginning of the test? On a side note - The original C++ code was written because we were performing math that we couldn't do in VB6 so we had to cross boundaries between C++ and VB6 and arrays were used. Is there a "better" way of handling large amounts of data in the .NET world that us VB6 programmers may not yet be privy to? Or if we aren't crossing that managed/un-managed boundary, should we be representing our data as objects instead? Thanks all!

• Do assembly strong names change when new versions of .Net are released?

  I'm trying to load an assembly that was installed as part of .Net 3.5 SP1 using Assembly.Load() by referencing its strong name. This works fine on my computer right now, but is it future proof? Will the strong name of core .Net assemblies change when patches are installed or new versions of the .Net framework are released? If so, how can I load an assembly from the GAC without using it's strong name?

• Correct way to textually report the remaining time on a long running process?

  So you have a long running process, perhaps with a progress bar, and you want a text estimate of the remaining time, eg: "5 minutes remaining" "30 seconds remaining" etc. If you don't actually want to report clock time (due to accuracy or resolution or update-rate issues) but want to stick to the text summary, what is the correct paradigm? Is "one minute" left displayed from 0 to 60 seconds? or from 1:00 to 1:59? Say there's 1:35 Left - is that "2 minutes remaining" or "1 minute remaining"? Do you just pare it down to "A few minutes left" when you're less than 3 minutes? What is the preferred (least user-frustrating) method?

  I have an Action that basically adds an item to a cart, the only way the cart is known is by checking the cookie, here is the flow of logic, please let me know if you see any issue... /order/add/[id] is called via GET action checks for cookie, if no cookie found, it makes a new cart, writes the identifier to the cookie, and adds the item to the database with a relation to the cart created if cookie is found, it gets the cart identifier from the cookie, gets the cart object, adds the item to the database with a relation to the cart found so it's basically like... action add(int id){ if(cookie is there) cart = getcart(cookievalue) else cart = makecart() createcookie(cart.id) additemtocart(cart.id, id) return "success"; } Seem right? I can't really thing of another way that would make sense.

• How do I pass a javascript parameter to an asp.net MVCmodel from within a View?

  Hi everyone! I am having an issue trying to access a list property on a model from within a javascript. My basic situation is this: I have an ArticleController and an ArticleViewModel. An Article has a number of properties, one of which is Text, which is just a string that contains the contents of the article. The ArticleViewModel contains a Pages property, which is just a List of Strings. When the ArticleViewModel constructor is called, I populate the Pages list by dividing up the article text based on some delimeters. I have a View which inherits the ArticleViewModel type. What I want to do is only display one page at a time, and then when the user clicks a page number (from a list at the bottom of the article), I want to use javascript to load that page into the #dynamicContent div. The problem: I can't seem to pass a parameter to the Model.Pages property from within javascript... Is this possible? I get an error stating, "Expression Expected" when I try what I have below. I don't want to have to worry about AJAX calls or anything like that since I already have the entire article... I just need a way to access each individual page from within the javascript function. Alternatively, if there is a better solution for "paginating" an article so that I can load each articlePage without having to refresh the entire html page, I would certainly be open to that as well.   I want to list the number of items for each list. How can I find this number in a single query, rather than a query for each list? Here is a simplified version of my current template code: {% for list in lists %} <li> {{ listname }}: {% with list.num_items as item_count %} {{ item_count }} item{{ item_count|pluralize }} {% endwith %} </li> {% endfor %} lists is passed as: List.objects.filter(user=user) and num_items is a property of the List model: def _get_num_items(self): return self.item_set.filter(archived=False).count() num_items = property(_get_num_items) This queries SELECT COUNT(*) FROM "my_app_item" WHERE... n times, where n is the number of lists. Is it possible to make a single query here?
