  • Empathy Audio Call Option Disabled 13.04

    - by PJ Singh
Recently, I noticed that the Audio Call option is now disabled (greyed out) in Empathy when I right click on an available GoogleTalk contact. This option used to be available a few days ago. I do have libtelepathy-farstream3, libfarstream-0.1-0, and libfarstream-0.2-2 installed on Ubuntu 13.04 x64 with kernel 3.8.0-27. (Note, I just upgraded the kernel to 3.8.0-29 and still have this issue). Has anyone else experienced this recently, and if so, is there a resolution?

  • udev hide partition in nautilus for specific user/group

    - by user64780
I'm trying to hide a partition form a specific group of users in Ubuntu 12.04. I have created a new rule in /etc/udev/rules.d/99-hide-disk.rules with KERNEL="sda3",ENV{UDISKS_PRESENTATION_HIDE}="1" And this works for all users. I tried KERNEL="sda3",ENV{UDISKS_PRESENTATION_HIDE}="1",GROUP="adm",MODE:="0700 but the partition is still hidden. That changes the group and permissions on the device rather than the rule. How do I make the rule only apply to a particular group of users?

  • 'dd' access to a drive

    - by John
I've been working with making custom bootloader and kernel code (not necessarily Linux kernel). I'm putting the images on USB, and was using dd to place them on the sector they needed to be on, and I'm getting tired of burning the image to /dev/sda instead of /dev/sdb (effectively destroying my hard drive). So I was wondering if I could somehow give user access to the 'dd' command, but only to the /dev/sdb drive, so that if I accidentally type /dev/sda it won't let me, because I wouldn't have run the command as sudo or root.

  • Does an LTS desktop get any updates after three years?

    - by Oli
In cleaning up an answer today, I noted the following: LTS desktops get updates for three years LTS servers get updates for five years An Ubuntu desktop is (essentially) a superset of server packages. So in the fourth and fifth year, if LTS Server gets Kernel updates*, are these also provided for LTS Desktop? What about other core-system stuff? I realise the Kernel is a little special because there is a -server variant but are updates pushed for -generic (et al) too?

  • After update, grub is broken.

    - by Bryan Allan
Some months back I used wubi to install ubuntu on an hp laptop with vista. After not using it for a month or so, I loaded ubuntu and installed many updates (including kernel update). Windows boot manager loads without any problems, and I can boot to vista without problems. However, if I choose ubuntu, the screen briefly flashes Try (hd0,0) : NTFS5 and then goes to black. I never get to the kernel image selection screen.

  • Sempron 145 core unlocking

    - by Grant
Call me a cheapskate looking for performance, but I have a Sempron 145 processor that has been unlocked to an Athlon II X2 4450e with a GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 motherboard, but only one of the two processor cores can be used at a time. If both of the cores are enabled in the BIOS the kernel will hang during boot, If I reboot the system and disable the second core (but not re-lock the processor), it will take me to the grub and then start normally. Is there a way to enable both cores and boot without kernel hangs?

  • What about Ubuntu 12.04 core updates every 6 months?

    - by user71747
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS is supported for 5 years, and will get some core updates for 2 years : I guess those updates include the kernel, graphic drivers and X11. But will these updates be optionnal, or not ? I would like to stick with my present version of the kernel and X11, because I'm using an AMD/ATI graphic card with fglrx driver, but according to this link, support for ATI HD 2000/3000/4000 cards will be dropped soon. Thanks !

  • Can my machine run Ubuntu( kubuntu | xubuntu | mint ) 12.04 WELL?

    - by Steve
I have a 9 year old computer packing the hardware listed below. My question is, can I run 12.04 ( Ubuntu, Kubuntu, MINT or Xubuntu ) WELL? I was running Ubuntu 10.10 and I upgraded to 12.04 by going through each release via the update manager: 11.04 - 11.10 -12.04 During the installation process for 12.04 I saw an error message that there was an error installing and setting up part of the kernel. Later, when I tried installing a package in synaptic, I got another error message mentioning the kernel. When I rebooted, I got told somehting about my video and graphics was not configured properly and that I would have to do it manually ( like I know ). It gave me the option to enter the system in low graphics mode, but it just hanged. I had an old livecd of Xubuntu 10.10 around so I used that to get into my computer and copy data over to an external hard drive. I think tried to install Xubuntu 10.10 from the livecd, with the option "download updates" checked. The install process moved along a bit, then halted for about 5 hours. I rebooted my machine and tried the Xubuntu 10.10 installer WITHOUT the option to "download updates". The install completed in about 15 minutes. So, all of that is making me wonder if there is someting about 12.04 that does not like my hardware. I'm willing to try again, but only if I know I will not have to spend hours just to get to an error message and a hosed up system like I did last night. I also think I have a lot more RAM than is being reported in the output below. I had extra ram installed last year. I'm not good with the command line readouts, but there seems like there should be a lot more. I wasn't thrilled with Unity. I am willing to try Kubuntu 12.04. Will I run into the same problems? What is the highest version of a *ubuntu can I upgrade to? • How can I improve the battery life under 12.04 on my Inspiron 14z? [duplicate]

    - by cfogelberg
This question already has an answer here: Tips to extend battery life for laptops and notebooks 24 answers How do I improve the battery life of my Inspiron 14z under Ubuntu 12.04? This laptop gets 4-5 hours of battery life using Windows (e.g. here). I've removed Windows, installed Ubuntu 12.04 and the initial battery life was only 2 hours. With some tweaks (described below) it's still only ~2.5 hours. For reference, the laptop is the latest model of the 14z: i5-3337U processor 32GB MSATA, 500GB HDD (5400rpm) AMD Radeon HD7570M graphics card I have put ext4 partitions on both the SSD and the HDD, and have mounted / to the SSD and /home to the HDD. I also put a 24gb linux swap partition at the start of the HDD, though I figure this won't be used all that much (the laptop has 8gb of RAM). After googling around and reading Ask Ubuntu and other sites extensively, I have done the following steps, and they have improved the battery life ~30 minutes (exact improvement not clear, but battery life is still nowhere near 4-5 hours). Installed Jupiter (and set Performance to "Power Saving") Installed laptop-mode-tools cat /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode now outputs 5 (previously it output 0) But it's not clear that this will help: AskUbuntu question Turned down the brightness of my screen from full to 1/3 Other things I have heard about but have not tried for fear of frying the laptop or my linux install: Add "pcie_aspm=force" at the end of the line with "quiet splash" in /boot/grub/grub.cfg Enable ALPM, but it may already be enabled in 12.04? Enable i915 framebuffer compression Use a propietary driver for the graphics card? Turn off the graphics card? (what would happen if I relied on the internal Intel bridge?) Use TLP? Spin down the HDD more aggressively (howto, but I think laptop-mode-tools does this already) The only other thing I've noticed is that plastic just above the F5, F6 and F7 keys gets really hot. According to Jupiter my CPU temperature is only 69 celsius and the System Monitor shows CPU load at 7% so I don't think it's the CPU. Maybe it's the graphics card? Also, I've set up MongoDB and LAMP on the machine as well. When I run powertop MongoDB is high in the list, but I'm not sure if that's relevant to battery life because I'm not actually doing anything with MongoDB most of the time. • What is the relationship between the command line, the OS and the microprocessor? [closed]

    - by ssbrewster
I'm not totally clear on how using the command line differs from working through the OS' interface using an editor for example. Obviously the UI is different but I want to understand how the command line interacts with the kernel and microprocessor, and how this compares to how kernel interfaces with the OS' GUI. I know I'm missing several layers of abstraction but would be grateful for someone to explain this.

  • Upgrading Ubuntu to 9.04 breaks ATI video card driver, VESA and ati/radeon drivers

    - by Neil
I upgraded my Ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04, and it not only broke the ATI proprietary fglrx driver, but also the ability to use the VESA or open-source ati or radeon drivers. I have an ATI RV610 which is an ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT. I have Linux Kernel 2.6.27-14-generic and 2.6.28-13-generic. With fglrx, vesa, ati and radeon, the Xserver hangs the machine as soon as it starts by invoking X or startx, which is seen by observing that caps lock doesn't work. There's nothing useful in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, no errors at all. This is with either kernel. When I download a new proprietary driver from ATI, I install it successfully on kernel 2.6.27, and it doesn't hang when X starts up, but it just shows a blank screen and does nothing. I also can't CTRL+ALT+Backspace out of X at this point. In all the years I've used ATI's Linux drivers, this has happened almost every time I've upgraded my kernel, but it's been fixable with much effort. This time I'm really stuck. Does anyone know how to fix these problems?

  • Patching Synaptics Driver In Ubuntu

    - by danben
I've got an HP Envy with the new Synaptics Clickpad - the device is not supported out of the box by Ubuntu, so I downloaded this patch (https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/67335/), applied it to synaptics.c in the linux kernel source, rebuilt the kernel and booted from it. Nothing changed. I'm new to Linux and don't know much about driver configuration; how can I check that the newly-produced synaptics.o file is actually being used somewhere? Or if it is obvious, what step did I leave out? Separately, I tried following the instructions in this thread: http://georgia.ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8989185&postcount=11 There, someone posted the patch along with a Makefile and instructions for installation. When I followed those, my mouse stopped working altogether. Not desirable, but at least I know it had some effect. The Makefile is posted below; I get the gist of what it's doing, but don't have enough knowledge to figure out why it would cause the device to stop responding entirely. obj-m := psmouse.o psmouse-objs := psmouse-base.o synaptics.o psmouse-$(CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2_ALPS) += alps.o psmouse-$(CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2_ELANTECH) += elantech.o psmouse-$(CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2_OLPC) += hgpk.o psmouse-$(CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2_LOGIPS2PP) += logips2pp.o psmouse-$(CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2_LIFEBOOK) += lifebook.o psmouse-$(CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2_TRACKPOINT) += trackpoint.o psmouse-$(CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2_TOUCHKIT) += touchkit_ps2.o KDIR := /lib/modules/$(shell uname -r)/build PWD := $(shell pwd) default: $(MAKE) -C $(KDIR) SUBDIRS=$(PWD) modules install: @cp psmouse.ko /lib/modules/$(shell uname -r)/kernel/drivers/input/mouse/

  • Upgrade Debian to unstable on VirtualBox: udev problem

    - by Ken
I'm running Debian stable on VirtualBox on Windows Vista 64-bit Ultimate. It's been running great, but I needed some newer packages, so I put sid in my sources.list to upgrade to unstable (as I've done a dozen times on various Linux boxes over the years). When I upgraded, something went screwy and it asked me to run apt-get -f install to fix them, which gave this: (Reading database ... 77846 files and directories currently installed.) • Pinging an external server through OpenVPN tunnel doesn’t work

    - by qdii
I have an OpenVPN server and a client, and I want to use this tunnel to access not only 10.0.8.0/24 but the whole internet. So far, pinging the server from the client through the tun0 interface works, and vice versa. However, pinging www.google.com from the client through tun0 doesn’t work (all packets are lost). I figured that I should configure the server so that any packet coming from tun0 in destination of the internet be forwarded, so I came up with this iptables config line: interface_connecting_to_the_internet='eth0' interface_openvpn='tun0' internet_ip_address=`ifconfig "$interface_connecting_to_the_internet" | sed -n s'/.*inet \([0-9.]*\).*/\1/p'` iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o "${interface_connecting_to_the_internet}" -j SNAT --to-source "${internet_ip_address}" echo '1' > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward Yet, this doesn’t work, the packets are still lost and I am wondering what could possibly be wrong with my setup. Some details: ip route gives on the server: default via 176.31.127.254 dev eth0 metric 3 10.8.0.0/24 via 10.8.0.2 dev tun0 10.8.0.2 dev tun0 proto kernel scope link src 10.8.0.1 127.0.0.0/8 via 127.0.0.1 dev lo 176.31.127.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 176.31.127.109 ip route gives on the client: default via 192.168.1.1 dev wlan0 proto static 10.8.0.1 via 10.8.0.5 dev tun0 10.8.0.5 dev tun0 proto kernel scope link src 10.8.0.6 127.0.0.0/8 via 127.0.0.1 dev lo scope link 192.168.1.0/24 dev wlan0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.109 client uses wifi adapter wlan0 and TUN adapter tun0. server uses ethernet adapter eth0 and TUN adapter tun0. the VPN spans on 10.0.8.0/24 both client and linux are using Linux 3.6.1.

  • ephemeral vs EBS partitions

    - by hortitude
    I launched an EBS backed AMI with all the defaults. I noticed that it automicatlly had attached an ephemeral disk. I was just wondering if there was a good programtic way to know that this particular device is ephemeral vs some EBS volume I had decided to attach: ubuntu@-----:~$ df -ahT Filesystem Type Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/xvda1 ext4 7.9G 867M 6.7G 12% / proc proc 0 0 0 - /proc sysfs sysfs 0 0 0 - /sys none fusectl 0 0 0 - /sys/fs/fuse/connections none debugfs 0 0 0 - /sys/kernel/debug none securityfs 0 0 0 - /sys/kernel/security udev devtmpfs 1.9G 12K 1.9G 1% /dev devpts devpts 0 0 0 - /dev/pts tmpfs tmpfs 751M 172K 750M 1% /run none tmpfs 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock none tmpfs 1.9G 0 1.9G 0% /run/shm /dev/xvdb ext3 394G 199M 374G 1% /mnt ubuntu@-----:~$ mount /dev/xvda1 on / type ext4 (rw) proc on /proc type proc (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev) sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev) none on /sys/fs/fuse/connections type fusectl (rw) none on /sys/kernel/debug type debugfs (rw) none on /sys/kernel/security type securityfs (rw) udev on /dev type devtmpfs (rw,mode=0755) devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,noexec,nosuid,gid=5,mode=0620) tmpfs on /run type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,size=10%,mode=0755) none on /run/lock type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,size=5242880) none on /run/shm type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev) /dev/xvdb on /mnt type ext3 (rw,_netdev)

I have a machine with 8GB ram (BIOS sees it, so my motherboard and CPU supports it), and I installed CentOS 6.3 on it. When it starts up, it only see 3.1GB. uname says: 2.6.32-279.1.1.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP BIOS-provided physical RAM map: BIOS-e820: 0000000000000000 - 000000000009fc00 (usable) BIOS-e820: 000000000009fc00 - 00000000000a0000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000000e0000 - 0000000000100000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 0000000000100000 - 00000000cf65f000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 00000000cf65f000 - 00000000cf6e8000 (ACPI NVS) BIOS-e820: 00000000cf6e8000 - 00000000cf6ec000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 00000000cf6ec000 - 00000000cf6ff000 (ACPI data) BIOS-e820: 00000000cf6ff000 - 00000000cf700000 (usable) dmesg | grep -i memory says: initial memory mapped : 0 - 20000000 init_memory_mapping: 0000000000000000-00000000cf700000 Reserving 129MB of memory at 48MB for crashkernel (System RAM: 3319MB) PM: Registered nosave memory: 000000000009f000 - 00000000000a0000 PM: Registered nosave memory: 00000000000a0000 - 00000000000e0000 PM: Registered nosave memory: 00000000000e0000 - 0000000000100000 PM: Registered nosave memory: 00000000cf65f000 - 00000000cf6e8000 PM: Registered nosave memory: 00000000cf6ec000 - 00000000cf6ff000 Memory: 3184828k/3398656k available (5152k kernel code, 1016k absent, 212812k reserved, 7166k data, 1260k init) please try 'cgroup_disable=memory' option if you don't want memory cgroups Initializing cgroup subsys memory Freeing initrd memory: 16136k freed Non-volatile memory driver v1.3 agpgart-intel 0000:00:00.0: detected 8192K stolen memory crash memory driver: version 1.1 Freeing unused kernel memory: 1260k freed Freeing unused kernel memory: 972k freed Freeing unused kernel memory: 1732k freed Update: Memtest see all the 8GB, and dmidecode -t 17 | grep Size too.
