  • EHome IR receiver and Ubuntu 13 - any one have this working?

    - by squakie
I have a "generic" USB IR receiver I purchased off of Ebay to make my life a little easier with XBMC on my Ubuntu box. I am currently running 13.10 and have never tried nor have any knowledge of IR in Ubuntu. I know of lirc, and I know a lot of it is now included in the kernel. My understanding is that lirc in basic terms maps pulses from an remote control to functions - like keyboard or mouse clicks. It is also my understanding that I might still need a driver or something for my device. lsusb shows the device as: Bus 006 Device 003: ID 147a:e016 Formosa Industrial Computing, Inc. eHome Infrared Receiver dmesg shows the following pertaining to the device: [43635.311985] usb 6-2: USB disconnect, device number 2 [43641.344387] usb 6-2: new full-speed USB device number 3 using ohci-pci [43641.543454] usb 6-2: New USB device found, idVendor=147a, idProduct=e016 [43641.543467] usb 6-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3 [43641.543473] usb 6-2: Product: eHome Infrared Transceiver [43641.543478] usb 6-2: Manufacturer: Formosa21 [43641.543483] usb 6-2: SerialNumber: FM000623 [43641.555736] Registered IR keymap rc-rc6-mce [43641.555968] input: Media Center Ed. eHome Infrared Remote Transceiver (147a:e016) as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:12.0/usb6/6-2/6-2:1.0/rc/rc2/input15 [43641.556221] rc2: Media Center Ed. eHome Infrared Remote Transceiver (147a:e016) as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:12.0/usb6/6-2/6-2:1.0/rc/rc2 [43641.556584] input: MCE IR Keyboard/Mouse (mceusb) as /devices/virtual/input/input16 [43641.557186] rc rc2: lirc_dev: driver ir-lirc-codec (mceusb) registered at minor = 0 [43641.731965] mceusb 6-2:1.0: Registered Formosa21 eHome Infrared Transceiver with mce emulator interface version 1 [43641.731978] mceusb 6-2:1.0: 2 tx ports (0x0 cabled) and 2 rx sensors (0x0 active) (excuse the double spacing, but I had to put in extra cr/lf using "enter" or the entire thing was just one long unreadable string). When I connect the same IR receiver to a Raspberry Pi running OpenELEC/XBMC there is no flashing led unless I press a remote button, and the device works. In Ubuntu, the led is constantly blinking, and nothing happens when I press a remote key. I tried the command line program to test but it never echoes anything back to the terminal window. I believe it must need some sort of driver or something else, but I am completely in the dark on this. If it matters I also have: - Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse USB receiver - Tenda USB wireless adapter And.....I've also noticed some errors now that show in dmesg that seem to somehow related to HDMI if that makes any sense: 46721.144731] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [46721.144749] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [46721.444025] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [46721.444061] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [46721.743375] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [46721.743411] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [46722.043092] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [46722.043118] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [46722.343086] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [46722.343122] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [46722.642517] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [46722.642574] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [46722.942459] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [46722.942485] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [46723.242103] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [46723.242129] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [46723.541877] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [46723.541923] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [58366.651954] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [58366.651980] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [58366.951523] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [58366.951549] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [58367.251075] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [58367.251121] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [58367.550517] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [58367.550563] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [58367.850219] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [58367.850256] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [58368.150160] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [58368.150185] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [58368.449544] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [58368.449570] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [58368.749583] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [58368.749629] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [58369.049280] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [58369.049326] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [58394.706273] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [58394.706300] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [58394.706350] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [58394.706367] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [58395.003032] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [58395.003058] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [58395.302680] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [58395.302705] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [58395.602442] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [58395.602477] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [58395.902143] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [58395.902179] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [58396.201839] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [58396.201875] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [58396.501538] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [58396.501574] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [58396.801232] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [58396.801268] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [58397.100583] HDMI: ELD buf size is 0, force 128 [58397.100627] HDMI: invalid ELD data byte 0 [63095.766042] systemd-hostnamed[8875]: Warning: nss-myhostname is not installed. Changing the local hostname might make it unresolveable. Please install nss-myhostname! dave@davepc:~$ EDIT: Maybe another way to look at this would be what does Ubuntu do or not do that OpenELEC does or doesn't do (on Raspberry Pi) such that it works in OpenELEC but not in Ubuntu?

  • WebBrowser DrawToBitmap other methods?

    - by Matt
I am trying to capture the content of the WebBrowser control. DrawToBitmap() would work perfectly, but it is not supported in documentation for the WebBrowser control. I have been trying to find another way to capture the contents of the WebBrowser control and save them to a local image file. Anyone have any workarounds or other methods to save the contents of the WebBrowser control to a local image file?

  • Control diamond square algorithm to generate islands/pangea.

    - by Gabriel A. Zorrilla
I generated a height map with the diamond square algorithm. The thing is i do not manage to create islands, this is, restrict the height other than water level range to a certain value in the center of the map. I manualy seeded a circle in the middle of the map but the rest of the map still receives heights over the water level. I dont fully understand the Perlin noise algorithm so i'd like to work with my current implementation of the diamond square algorithm which took me 3 days to interpret and code in PHP. :P

  • Ground Control by David Baum

    - by JuergenKress
As cloud computing moves out of the early-adopter phase, organizations are carefully evaluating how to get to the cloud. They are examining standard methods for developing, integrating, deploying, and scaling their cloud applications, and after weighing their choices, they are choosing to develop and deploy cloud applications based on Oracle Cloud Application Foundation, part of Oracle Fusion Middleware. Oracle WebLogic Server is the flagship software product of Oracle Cloud Application Foundation. Oracle WebLogic Server is optimized to run on Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud, the integrated hardware and software platform for the Oracle Cloud Application Foundation family. Many companies, including Reliance Commercial Finance, are adopting this middleware infrastructure to enable private cloud computing and its convenient, on-demand access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources. “Cloud computing has become an extremely critical design factor for us,” says Shashi Kumar Ravulapaty, senior vice president and chief technology officer at Reliance Commercial Finance. “It’s one of our main focus areas. Oracle Exalogic, especially in combination with Oracle WebLogic, is a perfect fit for rapidly provisioning capacity in a private cloud infrastructure.” Reliance Commercial Finance provides loans to tens of thousands of customers throughout India. With more than 1,500 employees accessing the company’s core business applications every day, the company was having trouble processing more than 6,000 daily transactions with its legacy infrastructure, especially at the end of each month when hundreds of concurrent users need to access the company’s loan processing and approval applications. • Inversion of Control Resource

    - by MarkPearl
Well… this is going to be another really short blog posting. I have been meaning to read more about IOC containers and came across this blog post which seemed to really explain the concept well – based on Castle Windsor. I also  enjoyed reading the replies about IOC on stack overflow and what it meant. If anyone knows of other good articles that explain the basics really well – wont you comment them to me.

  • SWT Layout for absolute positioning with minimal-spanning composites

    - by pure.equal
Hi, I'm writing a DND-editor where I can position elemtents (like buttons, images ...) freely via absolute positioning. Every element has a parent composite. These composites should span/grasp/embrace every element they contain. There can be two or more elements in the same composite and a composite can contain another composite. This image shows how it should look like. To achive this I wrote a custom layoutmanager: import org.eclipse.swt.SWT; import org.eclipse.swt.graphics.Point; import org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Composite; import org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Control; import org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Layout; public class SpanLayout extends Layout { Point[] sizes; int calcedHeight, calcedWidth, calcedX, calcedY; Point[] positions; /* * (non-Javadoc) * * @see * org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Layout#computeSize(org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Composite * , int, int, boolean) * * A composite calls computeSize() on its associated layout to determine the * minimum size it should occupy, while still holding all its child controls * at their minimum sizes. */ @Override protected Point computeSize(Composite composite, int wHint, int hHint, boolean flushCache) { int width = wHint, height = hHint; if (wHint == SWT.DEFAULT) width = composite.getBounds().width; if (hHint == SWT.DEFAULT) height = composite.getBounds().height; return new Point(width, height); } /* * (non-Javadoc) * * @see * org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Layout#layout(org.eclipse.swt.widgets.Composite, * boolean) * * Calculates the positions and sizes for the children of the passed * Composite, then places them accordingly by calling setBounds() on each * one. */ @Override protected void layout(Composite composite, boolean flushCache) { Control children[] = composite.getChildren(); for (int i = 0; i < children.length; i++) { calcedX = calcX(children[i]); calcedY = calcY(children[i]); calcedHeight = calcHeight(children[i]) - calcedY; calcedWidth = calcWidth(children[i]) - calcedX; if (composite instanceof Composite) { calcedX = calcedX - composite.getLocation().x; calcedY = calcedY - composite.getLocation().y; } children[i].setBounds(calcedX, calcedY, calcedWidth, calcedHeight); } } private int calcHeight(Control control) { int maximum = 0; if (control instanceof Composite) { if (((Composite) control).getChildren().length > 0) { for (Control child : ((Composite) control).getChildren()) { int calculatedHeight = calcHeight(child); if (calculatedHeight > maximum) { maximum = calculatedHeight; } } return maximum; } } return control.computeSize(SWT.DEFAULT, SWT.DEFAULT, true).y + control.getLocation().y; } private int calcWidth(Control control) { int maximum = 0; if (control instanceof Composite) { if (((Composite) control).getChildren().length > 0) { for (Control child : ((Composite) control).getChildren()) { int calculatedWidth = calcWidth(child); if (calculatedWidth > maximum) { maximum = calculatedWidth; } } return maximum; } } return control.computeSize(SWT.DEFAULT, SWT.DEFAULT, true).x + control.getLocation().x; } private int calcX(Control control) { int minimum = Integer.MAX_VALUE; if (control instanceof Composite) { if (((Composite) control).getChildren().length > 0) { for (Control child : ((Composite) control).getChildren()) { int calculatedX = calcX(child); if (calculatedX < minimum) { minimum = calculatedX; } } return minimum; } } return control.getLocation().x; } private int calcY(Control control) { int minimum = Integer.MAX_VALUE; if (control instanceof Composite) { if (((Composite) control).getChildren().length > 0) { for (Control child : ((Composite) control).getChildren()) { int calculatedY = calcY(child); if (calculatedY < minimum) { minimum = calculatedY; } } return minimum; } } return control.getLocation().y; } } The problem with it is that it always positions the composite at the position (0,0). This is because it tries to change the absolute positioning into a relative one. Lets say I position a image at position (100,100) and one at (200,200). Then it has to calculate the location of the composite to be at (100,100) and spanning the one at (200,200). But as all child positions are relative to their parents I have to change the positions of the children to remove the 100px offset of the parent. When the layout gets updated it moves everything to the top-left corner (as seen in the image) because the position of the image is not (100,100) but (0,0) since I tried to remove the 100px offset of the partent. Where is my error in reasoning? Is this maybe a totally wrong approach? Is there maybe an other way to achive the desired behavior? Thanks in advance! Best regards, Ed

  • SQL SERVER – Faster SQL Server Databases and Applications – Power and Control with SafePeak Caching Options

    - by Pinal Dave
Update: This blog post is written based on the SafePeak, which is available for free download. Today, I’d like to examine more closely one of my preferred technologies for accelerating SQL Server databases, SafePeak. Safepeak’s software provides a variety of advanced data caching options, techniques and tools to accelerate the performance and scalability of SQL Server databases and applications. I’d like to look more closely at some of these options, as some of these capabilities could help you address lagging database and performance on your systems. To better understand the available options, it is best to start by understanding the difference between the usual “Basic Caching” vs. SafePeak’s “Dynamic Caching”. Basic Caching Basic Caching (or the stale and static cache) is an ability to put the results from a query into cache for a certain period of time. It is based on TTL, or Time-to-live, and is designed to stay in cache no matter what happens to the data. For example, although the actual data can be modified due to DML commands (update/insert/delete), the cache will still hold the same obsolete query data. Meaning that with the Basic Caching is really static / stale cache.  As you can tell, this approach has its limitations. Dynamic Caching Dynamic Caching (or the non-stale cache) is an ability to put the results from a query into cache while maintaining the cache transaction awareness looking for possible data modifications. The modifications can come as a result of: DML commands (update/insert/delete), indirect modifications due to triggers on other tables, executions of stored procedures with internal DML commands complex cases of stored procedures with multiple levels of internal stored procedures logic. When data modification commands arrive, the caching system identifies the related cache items and evicts them from cache immediately. In the dynamic caching option the TTL setting still exists, although its importance is reduced, since the main factor for cache invalidation (or cache eviction) become the actual data updates commands. Now that we have a basic understanding of the differences between “basic” and “dynamic” caching, let’s dive in deeper. SafePeak: A comprehensive and versatile caching platform SafePeak comes with a wide range of caching options. Some of SafePeak’s caching options are automated, while others require manual configuration. Together they provide a complete solution for IT and Data managers to reach excellent performance acceleration and application scalability for  a wide range of business cases and applications. Automated caching of SQL Queries: Fully/semi-automated caching of all “read” SQL queries, containing any types of data, including Blobs, XMLs, Texts as well as all other standard data types. SafePeak automatically analyzes the incoming queries, categorizes them into SQL Patterns, identifying directly and indirectly accessed tables, views, functions and stored procedures; Automated caching of Stored Procedures: Fully or semi-automated caching of all read” stored procedures, including procedures with complex sub-procedure logic as well as procedures with complex dynamic SQL code. All procedures are analyzed in advance by SafePeak’s  Metadata-Learning process, their SQL schemas are parsed – resulting with a full understanding of the underlying code, objects dependencies (tables, views, functions, sub-procedures) enabling automated or semi-automated (manually review and activate by a mouse-click) cache activation, with full understanding of the transaction logic for cache real-time invalidation; Transaction aware cache: Automated cache awareness for SQL transactions (SQL and in-procs); Dynamic SQL Caching: Procedures with dynamic SQL are pre-parsed, enabling easy cache configuration, eliminating SQL Server load for parsing time and delivering high response time value even in most complicated use-cases; Fully Automated Caching: SQL Patterns (including SQL queries and stored procedures) that are categorized by SafePeak as “read and deterministic” are automatically activated for caching; Semi-Automated Caching: SQL Patterns categorized as “Read and Non deterministic” are patterns of SQL queries and stored procedures that contain reference to non-deterministic functions, like getdate(). Such SQL Patterns are reviewed by the SafePeak administrator and in usually most of them are activated manually for caching (point and click activation); Fully Dynamic Caching: Automated detection of all dependent tables in each SQL Pattern, with automated real-time eviction of the relevant cache items in the event of “write” commands (a DML or a stored procedure) to one of relevant tables. A default setting; Semi Dynamic Caching: A manual cache configuration option enabling reducing the sensitivity of specific SQL Patterns to “write” commands to certain tables/views. An optimization technique relevant for cases when the query data is either known to be static (like archive order details), or when the application sensitivity to fresh data is not critical and can be stale for short period of time (gaining better performance and reduced load); Scheduled Cache Eviction: A manual cache configuration option enabling scheduling SQL Pattern cache eviction based on certain time(s) during a day. A very useful optimization technique when (for example) certain SQL Patterns can be cached but are time sensitive. Example: “select customers that today is their birthday”, an SQL with getdate() function, which can and should be cached, but the data stays relevant only until 00:00 (midnight); Parsing Exceptions Management: Stored procedures that were not fully parsed by SafePeak (due to too complex dynamic SQL or unfamiliar syntax), are signed as “Dynamic Objects” with highest transaction safety settings (such as: Full global cache eviction, DDL Check = lock cache and check for schema changes, and more). The SafePeak solution points the user to the Dynamic Objects that are important for cache effectiveness, provides easy configuration interface, allowing you to improve cache hits and reduce cache global evictions. Usually this is the first configuration in a deployment; Overriding Settings of Stored Procedures: Override the settings of stored procedures (or other object types) for cache optimization. For example, in case a stored procedure SP1 has an “insert” into table T1, it will not be allowed to be cached. However, it is possible that T1 is just a “logging or instrumentation” table left by developers. By overriding the settings a user can allow caching of the problematic stored procedure; Advanced Cache Warm-Up: Creating an XML-based list of queries and stored procedure (with lists of parameters) for periodically automated pre-fetching and caching. An advanced tool allowing you to handle more rare but very performance sensitive queries pre-fetch them into cache allowing high performance for users’ data access; Configuration Driven by Deep SQL Analytics: All SQL queries are continuously logged and analyzed, providing users with deep SQL Analytics and Performance Monitoring. Reduce troubleshooting from days to minutes with database objects and SQL Patterns heat-map. The performance driven configuration helps you to focus on the most important settings that bring you the highest performance gains. Use of SafePeak SQL Analytics allows continuous performance monitoring and analysis, easy identification of bottlenecks of both real-time and historical data; Cloud Ready: Available for instant deployment on Amazon Web Services (AWS). As you can see, there are many options to configure SafePeak’s SQL Server database and application acceleration caching technology to best fit a lot of situations. If you’re not familiar with their technology, they offer free-trial software you can download that comes with a free “help session” to help get you started. You can access the free trial here. Also, SafePeak is available to use on Amazon Cloud. • AJAX Control Toolkit - Globalization (Language)

    - by Guilherme Cardoso
For those who use AjaxToolKit controls presenting a language-dependent data (the CalendarExternder with the names of the months and weeks, for example) you can change the language to be presented in a simple way. In Web.Config let's define the primary culture as follows: < system . web > <System. Web> < globalization uiCulture = "pt-pt" culture = "pt-pt" /> <Globalization UICulture = "en-us" culture = "en-us" /> ... ...  In this example I'm using Portuguese. To finish it is necessary to change our ScriptManager. Be it the ToolScriptManager AjaxToolKit or belonging to the ScriptManager's framework. NET, the properties as a vibrant and true are the EnableScriptGlobalization EnableScriptLocalization. < cc1 : ToolkitScriptManager ID = "ToolkitScriptManager1" runat = "server" EnableScriptGlobalization = "true" EnableScriptLocalization = "true" > <Cc1: ToolkitScriptManager ID = "ToolkitScriptManager1" runat = "server" EnableScriptGlobalization = "true" EnableScriptLocalization = "true"> </ cc1 : ToolkitScriptManager > </ Cc1: ToolkitScriptManager> or < asp : ScriptManager ID = "ScriptManager1" runat = "server" EnableScriptGlobalization = "true" EnableScriptLocalization = "true" > <Asp: ScriptManager ID = "ScriptManager1" runat = "server" EnableScriptGlobalization = "true" EnableScriptLocalization = "true"> </ asp : ScriptManager > </ Asp: ScriptManager>   Like hus we use the controls on AjaxToolKit, always using the Portuguese language. It is important that AjaxTookKit is updated to avoid shortages or errors in translation, though I have not updated by this error in the ModalPopup the latest version, and any controls that I have used are translated correctly.

  • Webmasters Out of Control

I've written about this topic before and it is one of my pet hates, small business owners who pay webmasters to build web sites for them and then are never given access to the files or the "engine room" of the site to be able to make on page SEO changes and more importantly get the site better rankings on search engines such as Google. SEO is not set and forget, because you need to constantly make changes and massage pages on your site.

  • Access Control Service: Protocol and Token Transition

    - by Your DisplayName here!
ACS v2 supports a number of protocols (WS-Federation, WS-Trust, OpenId, OAuth 2 / WRAP) and a number of token types (SWT, SAML 1.1/2.0) – see Vittorio’s Infographic here. Some protocols are designed for active client (WS-Trust, OAuth / WRAP) and some are designed for passive clients (WS-Federation, OpenID). One of the most obvious advantages of ACS is that it allows to transition between various protocols and token types. Once example would be using WS-Federation/SAML between your application and ACS to sign in with a Google account. Google is using OpenId and non-SAML tokens, but ACS transitions into WS-Federation and sends back a SAML token. This way you application only needs to understand a single protocol whereas ACS acts as a protocol bridge (see my ACS2 sample here). Another example would be transformation of a SAML token to a SWT. This is achieved by using the WRAP endpoint – you send a SAML token (from a registered identity provider) to ACS, and ACS turns it into a SWT token for the requested relying party, e.g. (using the WrapClient from Thinktecture.IdentityModel): [TestMethod] public void GetClaimsSamlToSwt() {     // get saml token from idp     var samlToken = Helper.GetSamlIdentityTokenForAcs();     // send to ACS for SWT converion     var swtToken = Helper.GetSimpleWebToken(samlToken);     var client = new HttpClient(Constants.BaseUri);     client.SetAccessToken(swtToken, WebClientTokenSchemes.OAuth);     // call REST service with SWT     var response = client.Get("wcf/client");     Assert.AreEqual<HttpStatusCode>(HttpStatusCode.OK, response.StatusCode); } There are more protocol transitions possible – but they are not so obvious. A popular example would be how to call a REST/SOAP service using e.g. a LiveId login. In the next post I will show you how to approach that scenario.

  • Monitor and Control Memory Usage in Google Chrome

    - by Asian Angel
Do you want to know just how much memory Google Chrome and any installed extensions are using at a given moment? With just a few clicks you can see just what is going on under the hood of your browser. How Much Memory are the Extensions Using? Here is our test browser with a new tab and the Extensions Page open, five enabled extensions, and one disabled at the moment. You can access Chrome’s Task Manager using the Page Menu, going to Developer, and selecting Task manager… Or by right clicking on the Tab Bar and selecting Task manager. There is also a keyboard shortcut (Shift + Esc) available for the “keyboard ninjas”. Sitting idle as shown above here are the stats for our test browser. All of the extensions are sitting there eating memory even though some of them are not available/active for use on our new tab and Extensions Page. Not so good… If the default layout is not to your liking then you can easily modify the information that is available by right clicking and adding/removing extra columns as desired. For our example we added Shared Memory & Private Memory. Using the about:memory Page to View Memory Usage Want even more detail? Type about:memory into the Address Bar and press Enter. Note: You can also access this page by clicking on the Stats for nerds Link in the lower left corner of the Task Manager Window. Focusing on the four distinct areas you can see the exact version of Chrome that is currently installed on your system… View the Memory & Virtual Memory statistics for Chrome… Note: If you have other browsers running at the same time you can view statistics for them here too. See a list of the Processes currently running… And the Memory & Virtual Memory statistics for those processes. The Difference with the Extensions Disabled Just for fun we decided to disable all of the extension in our test browser… The Task Manager Window is looking rather empty now but the memory consumption has definitely seen an improvement. Comparing Memory Usage for Two Extensions with Similar Functions For our next step we decided to compare the memory usage for two extensions with similar functionality. This can be helpful if you are wanting to keep memory consumption trimmed down as much as possible when deciding between similar extensions. First up was Speed Dial”(see our review here). The stats for Speed Dial…quite a change from what was shown above (~3,000 – 6,000 K). Next up was Incredible StartPage (see our review here). Surprisingly both were nearly identical in the amount of memory being used. Purging Memory Perhaps you like the idea of being able to “purge” some of that excess memory consumption. With a simple command switch modification to Chrome’s shortcut(s) you can add a Purge Memory Button to the Task Manager Window as shown below.  Notice the amount of memory being consumed at the moment… Note: The tutorial for adding the command switch can be found here. One quick click and there is a noticeable drop in memory consumption. • WPF Button Image only showing in last control

    - by Ryan
    Hello All! I am fairly new to WPF and am probably missing something simple here. If I have 3 controls, only the last control will show the OriginalImage that I specify. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks Ryan Main Window <Grid> <Grid.RowDefinitions> <RowDefinition Height="200*"/> <RowDefinition Height="60" /> </Grid.RowDefinitions> <Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <ColumnDefinition Width="85" /> <ColumnDefinition Width="85" /> <ColumnDefinition Width="85" /> <ColumnDefinition Width="85" /> <ColumnDefinition Width="300" /> </Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <Grid Grid.Row="1"> <but:ListButton OriginalImage="/CustomItemsPanel;component/ListBox/Images/add.png" DisableImage="/CustomItemsPanel;component/ListBox/Images/addunselect.png" /> </Grid > <Grid Grid.Row="1" Grid.Column="1" > <but:ListButton OriginalImage="/CustomItemsPanel;component/ListBox/Images/add.png" DisableImage="/CustomItemsPanel;component/ListBox/Images/addunselect.png" /> </Grid > <Grid Grid.Row="1" Grid.Column="2" > <but:ListButton OriginalImage="/CustomItemsPanel;component/ListBox/Images/add.png" DisableImage="/CustomItemsPanel;component/ListBox/Images/addunselect.png" /> </Grid> </Grid> Control XAML <ResourceDictionary xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:local="clr-namespace:CustomItemsPanel.ListButton"> <LinearGradientBrush x:Key="ButtonBackground" EndPoint="0.5,1" StartPoint="0.5,0"> <LinearGradientBrush.GradientStops> <GradientStop Color="#FF0E3D70"/> <GradientStop Color="#FF001832" Offset="1"/> </LinearGradientBrush.GradientStops> </LinearGradientBrush> <LinearGradientBrush x:Key="ButtonBackgroundMouseOver" EndPoint="0.5,1" StartPoint="0.5,0"> <LinearGradientBrush.GradientStops> <GradientStop Color="#FF1E62A1" /> <GradientStop Color="#FF0A3C6D" Offset="1"/> </LinearGradientBrush.GradientStops> </LinearGradientBrush> <LinearGradientBrush x:Key="ButtonBackgroundSelected" EndPoint="0.5,1" StartPoint="0.5,0"> <LinearGradientBrush.GradientStops> <GradientStop Color="Red" /> <GradientStop Color="#FF0A2A4C" Offset="1"/> </LinearGradientBrush.GradientStops> </LinearGradientBrush> <Style x:Key="Toggle" TargetType="{x:Type Button}"> <Setter Property="Content"> <Setter.Value> <Image> <Image.Style> <Style TargetType="{x:Type Image}"> <Setter Property="Source" Value="{Binding RelativeSource={RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType={x:Type local:ListButton}}, Path=OriginalImage}"/> <Style.Triggers> <Trigger Property="IsEnabled" Value="False"> <Setter Property="Source" Value="{Binding Path=DisableImage, RelativeSource={RelativeSource TemplatedParent}}"/> </Trigger> </Style.Triggers> </Style> </Image.Style> </Image> </Setter.Value> </Setter> <Setter Property="Template"> <Setter.Value> <ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type Button}"> <Grid Cursor="Hand"> <Border Name="back" Margin="0,1,0,0" Background="{StaticResource ButtonBackground}"> <ContentPresenter VerticalAlignment="Center" HorizontalAlignment="Center" x:Name="content" /> </Border> <Border BorderThickness="1" BorderBrush="#FF004F92"> <Border BorderThickness="0,0,1,0" BorderBrush="#FF101D29" /> </Border> </Grid> <ControlTemplate.Triggers> <Trigger Property="IsMouseOver" Value="True" > <Setter TargetName="back" Property="Background" Value="{StaticResource ButtonBackgroundMouseOver}"/> </Trigger> </ControlTemplate.Triggers> </ControlTemplate> </Setter.Value> </Setter> </Style> <Style TargetType="{x:Type local:ListButton}"> <Setter Property="Template"> <Setter.Value> <ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type local:ListButton}"> <Button Style="{StaticResource Toggle}" /> </ControlTemplate> </Setter.Value> </Setter> </Style> </ResourceDictionary> Control Code Behind public class ListButton : Control { public static readonly DependencyProperty MouseOverImageProperty; public static readonly DependencyProperty OriginalImageProperty; public static readonly DependencyProperty DisableImageProperty; static ListButton() { DefaultStyleKeyProperty.OverrideMetadata(typeof(ListButton), new FrameworkPropertyMetadata(typeof(ListButton))); MouseOverImageProperty = DependencyProperty.Register("MouseOverImage", typeof(ImageSource), typeof(ListButton), new UIPropertyMetadata(null)); OriginalImageProperty = DependencyProperty.Register("OriginalImage", typeof(ImageSource), typeof(ListButton), new UIPropertyMetadata(null)); DisableImageProperty = DependencyProperty.Register("DisableImage", typeof(ImageSource), typeof(ListButton), new UIPropertyMetadata(null)); } public ImageSource MouseOverImage { get { return (ImageSource)GetValue(MouseOverImageProperty); } set { SetValue(MouseOverImageProperty, value); } } public ImageSource OriginalImage { get { return (ImageSource)GetValue(OriginalImageProperty); } set { SetValue(OriginalImageProperty, value); } } public ImageSource DisableImage { get { return (ImageSource)GetValue(DisableImageProperty); } set { SetValue(DisableImageProperty, value); } } }

  • MS Bing web crawler out of control causing our site to go down

    - by akaDanPaul
Here is a weird one that I am not sure what to do. Today our companies e-commerce site went down. I tailed the production log and saw that we were receiving a ton of request from this range of IP's 157.55.98.0/157.55.100.0. I googled around and come to find out that it is a MSN Web Crawler. So essentially MS web crawler overloaded our site causing it not to respond. Even though in our robots.txt file we have the following; Crawl-delay: 10 So what I did was just banned the IP range in iptables. But what I am not sure to do from here is how to follow up. I can't find anywhere to contact Bing about this issue, I don't want to keep those IPs blocked because I am sure eventually we will get de-indexed from Bing. And it doesn't really seem like this has happened to anyone else before. Any Suggestions? Update, My Server / Web Stats Our web server is using Nginx, Rails 3, and 5 Unicorn workers. We have 4gb of memory and 2 virtual cores. We have been running this setup for over 9 months now and never had an issue, 95% of the time our system is under very little load. On average we receive 800,000 page views a month and this never comes close to bringing / slowing down our web server. Taking a look at the logs we were receiving anywhere from 5 up to 40 request / second from this IP range. In all my years of web development I have never seen a crawler hit a website so many times. Is this new with Bing?

  • Fan control on Acer Aspire One D255 netbook

    - by AdamB
I have Ubuntu netbook edition on my Acer Aspire One D255 netbook and I notice that I always hear the fan working at 100% despite the actual temperature. I run the sensors command its only at 13c, theres no reason why the fan needs to be running this hard at that temp. root@adam-netbook:~# sensors acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +13.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) I'm guessing I may need some drivers in order to interact with the fan? Does anyone have any experience with this? It also seems that "sensors" may not be all that accurate, the temperature never seems to fluctuate.

  • Access Control and Accessibility in Oracle IRM 11g

    - by martin.abrahams
A recurring theme you'll find throughout this blog is that IRM needs to balance security with usability and manageability. One of the innovations in Oracle IRM 11g typifies this, as we have introduced a new right that may be included in any role - Accessibility. When creating or modifying a role, you simply select Accessibility along with Open, Print, Edit or whatever rights you want to include in the role. You might, for example, have parallel roles of Reader and Reader with Accessibility and Contributor and Contributor with Accessibility. The effect of the Accessibility right is to relax some of the protection of content in use such that selected users can use accessibility tools. For example, a user with the Accessibility right would be able to use the screen magnification tool, which IRM would ordinarily prevent because it involves screen capture. This new right makes it easy for you to apply security to documents yet, subject to suitable approval processes, cater for the fact that a subset of users might be disproportionately inconvenienced by some of the normal usage constraints. Rather than make those users put up with the restrictions, or perhaps exempt them from using sealed documents altogether, this new right allows you to accommodate them in a controlled manner, and to balance security with corporate accessibility goals.
