• Can I install WhizzyTeX for Emacs on a Mac (is Mac OS X a unix environment)?

  I think my question is pretty stupid, but here it goes: I am using Aquamacs, and I want to install the WhizzyTeX mode. The website for WhizzyTeX says that "it is designed for Unix platforms". I read that Mac OS X is unix certified, but does that mean I can install WhizzyTeX on my mac? If yes, can I install and use it with Aquamacs or do I have to use the Emacs running from the terminal? PS: I don't know whether this question should be posted here or on SuperUser, but as Emacs users seem to hang out here more often, this is the place I chose. EDIT: There are some websites saying I can use WhizzyTeX with Carbon Emacs on mac os x, but some places say I cannot (see for example this pdf document, page 27, which says that "* whizzytex: http://cristal.inria.fr/whizzytex/ mode in latex with ocaml good fo linux, should also work in cygwin, doe not work on osx"). So I am really confused...

• SVN Mac oSX issue - permissions?

  Hello there, /Volumes/sites is a connection to a samba share that hosts some of our sites. We authorise using a username & password that is the same user/pass to log onto the mac. When committing, (or even doing a cleanup) from the Mac Client side using the svn command line tool or SCPlugin, this error occurs: Commit succeeded, but other errors follow: Error bumping revisions post-commit (details follow): In directory '/Volumes/sites/foobar/public_html' Error processing command 'committed' in '/Volumes/sites/foobar/public_html' Error replacing text-base of 'index.php' Can't move '/Volumes/sites/foobar/public_html/.svn/tmp/text-base/index.php.svn-base' to '/Volumes/sites/foobar/public_html/.svn/text-base/index.php.svn-base': Operation not permitted Any ideas? I think it's to do with permissions on the mac side not being able to move files around on the samba share. Apologies if my question is kinda vague so any extra information I can give please shout. • Compile C++ program on Mac to run on Linux

  I have an application that I wrote in C++/SDL, using FMOD library. The app is portable and compiles without any code change on Mac and on Linux. But one annoyance is that when I want to ship Linux version, I have to run my Linux box, copy the source code over there (over USB drive, because I have no network there, it's an old laptop) and compile it, then copy it again over USB to my Mac and upload it. My question is - is there a better way of doing it? Ideally, could I compile the app to run on Linux directly from Xcode, where I compile it for Mac?

  I am on a Mac with Snow Leopard (10.6.3). I hear that the assembly language I work with has to be valid with the chipset that you use. I am completely new to this I have a basic background in C and Objective-C programming and an almost strong background in PHP. I have always wanted to see what assembly is all about. The tutorial I'll be looking at is by VTC [link]. What I want to know is: are the tutorials that I'm about to do compatible with the assembly version on the Mac that I have? Sorry I am completely new to this language although I do recall studying some of it way, way back in the day. I do have xcode and what I'm wondering is what kind of document would I open in xcode to work with assembly and does the Mac have a built in hex editor (when it comes time to needing it)? thanks

• Right programing language for developing application for Mac

  I'm planing to buy Mac. I would like to be able to develop GUI aplication for Mac as well. Currently I develop in C# using VisualStudio as IDE. I also know Java and I'm familiar with NetBeans IDE. Application created in both of this languages can run on Mac (as can NetBeans IDE) but I was told that neither C# nor Java is recomended for MacOS X development. So what language is recomended for MacOS X development ? I guess there is some recomodation from Apple for the developers ? I would prefer Object-oriented easy-to-use programing language (nothing like C) with good IDE that supports GUI creating (GUI designer). Thank you for answers

• Is there ever a reason to use C++ in a Mac-only application?

  Is there ever a reason to use C++ in a Mac-only application? I not talking about integrating external libraries which are C++, what I mean is using C++ because of any advantages in a particular application. While the UI code must be written in Obj-C, what about logic code? Because of the dynamic nature of Objective-C, C++ method calls tend to be ever so slightly faster but does this have any effect in any imaginable real life scenario? For example, would it make sense to use C++ over Objective-C for simulating large particle systems where some methods would need to be called over and over in short time? I can also see some cases where C++ has a more appropriate "feel". For example when doing graphics, it's nice to have vector and matrix types with appropriate operator overloads and methods. This, to me, seems like it would be a bit clunkier to implement in Objective-C. Also, Objective-C objects can never be treated plain old data structures in the same manner as C++ types since Objective-C objects always have an isa-pointer. Wouldn't it make sense to use C++ instead in something like this? Does anyone have a real life example of a situation where C++ was chosen for some parts of an application? Does Apple use any C++ except for the kernel? (I don't want to start a flame war here, both languages have their merits and I use both equally though in different applications.)

• Web Development Environment: How to distribute edited hosts files over bunch of mac machines?

  I am doing some research to prepare some web development environment for our small(10ppl and growing) new office. User Case: For each new web project usually we create new alias on an Apache server someproject.companywebsite From my understanding in order to see this website locally for all the rest of our team(including mangers and directors) they will need to edit hosts file (e.g. "192.168.1.10 someproject.companywebsite"), and like that each time for a new project(can be 2-5 each week) Solution: And I looking for a solution how to edit this hosts file only once and distribute it over all mac machines in our network at once or much more flawlessly than poking around with each machine every time over and over again. Is that possible? Or that a very wrong way of doing that? Perhaps we better set up own local dns server and point to it our router? Though own dns server a bit concerns me because of might be some network interruption and others lags, if you know what I mean. Or perhaps there are another workflows for that? What's the best way for such things? So I'll be so grateful to hear some advices from experienced admins. I couldn't find that info on internet, so if you know where to read about it, point me in a right direction. Thank you in advance Alex

• How to decide how backward-compatible my new Mac OS X application should be?

  I'm currently contemplating writing an OS X version of my Windows software. My Windows application still supports Windows XP, and I know that if I drop support for it now, our customers will cry bloody murder. I'm new to OS X development, and as I learn the technology, APIs, etc., I realized that if I'm going to provide comparable level of backward compatibility (e.g. down to OS X 10.5), I would not be able to use many things that look very useful and relevant in my case (ARC, XPC communications, many others). This is quite different from Windows, in my opinion, where there are very little changed between Windows XP and Windows 7 from desktop application developer's standpoint. So, on one hand, it seems like a complete waste to stick to 2007 or 2009-level API in 2012. On the other hand, according to NetMarketShare report and Stat Owl report Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6 market share is still 11% and 35%-40% respectively. However, I'm not sure if these older OS users are my target audience (buyers of software utilities) if they didn't bother to upgrade their OS... My question: Are there any other reasons I should take into account when deciding if I target 10.5 or 10.6 or 10.7 for a new application?

• How to best future proof my application that needs to connect to Outlook?

  I have a contact management application written in Delphi which has a “Sync with Outlook” feature that I developed 10 years ago. Now, I’m going back to add some features and fix some bugs. This sync feature uses the Outlook object model to get started, but it has an optional mode called “Use MAPI Enhancements” where it uses pure MAPI to speed up how it looks for changes, and it allows notes to be synced w/ RTF instead of just plain text. I'm wondering if supporting two parallel paths of execution is a good idea or not. If I went with all MAPI, I believe I'd avoid some security prompts, and I'd avoid situations where anti-virus has "script-blocking" features which block my app from connecting to Outlook. But I believe that on the down side, my 32-bit app would not be able to to connect with 64-bit Outlook 2010 using MAPI. And I wonder about the future of MAPI in general. If I stick with the Outlook object model, will my 32-bit app be able to connect to the Outlook object model (since it's out of process COM)? If so, this is a compelling reason to keep my Outlook object model execution path in place. But if not, and if my app needs to be compiled for x64, then why not just go with pure MAPI?

After I installed the 10.6.6 version, I get error in Finder as below: The application Finder can't be opened Just around a minute after restarting my Mac everytime I get the error from Finder and then everthing stops working. I have lots of important data in my Mac but now I cant take a backup of it as Finder stops working. So, Is there a way in Mac where I can revert back to 10.6.5 version? What are my options? • Need to access Mac via ssh remotely through another Mac with Internet Sharing

  My setup at office is: Internet - AirportExtreme --(wifi)-- AirportExpress --(eth)-- MacPro1 --(eth)-- MacPro2 I want to be able to access MacPro2 from laptop at home via ssh (and sftp). Is it possible? The AirportExtreme is set to "DHCP and NAT" and is doling out 10.0.1.xxx IPs. The AirportExpress is 10.0.1.2. MacPro1 is 10.0.1.3 via Ethernet to AirportExpress. It is then connected by 2nd Ethernet port (192.168.2.1) to MacPro2, which is 192.168.2.2. Is there any way to "tunnel through" to MacPro2 from home? Thanks!

• Best practice in this situation?

  My Delphi program relies heavily on Outlook automation. Outlook versions prior to 2007-SP2 tend to get stuck in memory due to badly written addins and badly written Outlook code. If Outlook is stuck, calling CreateOleObject('Outlook.Application') or GetActiveObject ... doesn't return and keeps my application hanging till Outlook.exe is closed in the task manager. I've thought of a solution, but I'm unsure whether it's good practice or not. I'd start Outlook with CreateOleObject in a separate thread, wait 10 seconds in my main thread and if Outlook hangs (CreateOleObject doesn't return), offer the user to kill the Outlook.exe process from my program. But since I don't want to force the user to kill the Outlook.exe proccess, as an alternative I also need a way to kill the new thread in my program which keeps hanging now. My questions are: a, Is this good practice b, How can I terminate a hanging thread in Delphi without leaking memory? Is there a way?

  Hi, I developed an Outlook 2003 add-in which uses the com dll redemption. I created a visual studio 2008 setup project, added a custom action to run "caspol.exe -machine -addgroup 1 -strong -hex [key] -noname -noversion FullTrust -n \"Name\" -description \"desc\" and moved the registry keys under software to HKLM as described in http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc136646.aspx#AutoDeployVSTOse_InstallingtheAddinforAllUsers to ensure all-users compatibility. I included the redemption.dll in the setup with vsdrfCOMSelfReg (vsdrfCOM throwed an error). My problem is: When installing the setup on a test machine under an admin account, it runs fine under all users, however when we use the company wide software deployment which runs under a system account the setup executes but the add-in wont load. If I repair the installation with an admin account again it loads just fine. Shouldn't a system account have the required permissions to install all of the components? What options do I have?   Good morning everyone at Stackoverflow, I am trying to find a VBA script that finds and replaces a certain text in incoming e-mails. So far i've been unable to find such a script that is working. I found several scripts to find and replace stuff in the e-mail but these don't work as a rule on incoming e-mails, they only work on outgoing / creating e-mails. Does anyone have such a script that they can share with me? I would like to find & replace a certain text on every incoming e-mail. I would really apreciate it! • Including FFMPEG with a Java application on Mac

  I'm writing a Java program that will be used on both Windows and Mac. In the program, I'm using FFMPEG to convert a MOV file to an FLV. On Windows, it's no problem -- simply call the command. But on Mac, I'm not quite sure what to do. Does the user really have to install FFMPEG on their machine, or can it somehow be included in the Java application? Thanks for any help/guidance!
