  • Newbie question - MySQL index size

    I've just started to investigating how I should optimize my database. Indexing seems to be a good idea, so I want to index a VARCHAR column, the engine is MyISAM. From what I've read, I understand that an index is limited to a size of 1000 bytes. A VARCHAR character is 3 bytes in size. Does this mean that if I want to index a VARCHAR column with 50 rows, I need an index prefix of 6 characters? I came to that number by dividing 1000 with the row number 50, then the bytesize per character that is 3. 1000/50/3=6,66. It seems a little complicated, so I'm just wondering if I'm thinking right? It seems weird to me that you'd only be able to index 333 rows in a VARCHAR column, using a prefix of 1 character.

    Hello all Some time ago I read a posting on a board where the person was talking poorly about people that have HTML embedded/within their PHP. I do quite a bit of PHP development but I still interleave HTML and PHP in the same document. Is there a better way to do this, am I doing it wrong? I know that in JSP/JSF they use an XML document with namespaces to insert their HTML code so I was wondering if there was a similar function that PHP uses that I should be taking advantage of.     Hey Everyone, I was wondering if anyone could look over a class I wrote, I am receiving generic warnings in Eclipse and I am just wondering if it could be cleaned up at all.   • question about frequency of updating access

    i have a table in an access database this access database is used on a regular basis, basically from 9-5 someone else has a copy of this exact table. sometimes records are added, sometimes deleted, and sometimes data within the records is updated. i need to update the access database table with the offsite table every hour or so. what is the best algorithm of updating the data? there are about 5000 records. would it severely lock up the table for a few seconds every hour? i would like to publicly apologize for my rude comment to david fenton

Once I make the call to open(), does execution continue directly below the open() and another "thread" enters the asynch function once the ajax request has been completed? I really find the original formulation highly confusing. Which one does it mean and is it even correct english?   • Question about using adaptive layout + print style sheet

    Hey everyone, In my web design class, we looked at creating different style sheets for different window sizes and using a javascript that detects the window size and loads the right style sheet. In the head, I'm linking to three external style sheets, as well as a link to the javascript file. So the adaptive layout works fine. However... I also need to be able to use a print style sheet with this particular webpage (it's the requirement for this project). The problem is this that the way the javascript was written makes it so that it ignores the print style sheet. When I go to print preview, it ignores the print style sheet and the preview shows me all of my webpage unstyled. It looks like just the html when opened in a browser. I am using the javascript by Kevin Hale at ParticleTree, and I'm sure there are those familiar with this :] http://particletree.com/examples/dynamiclayouts/ I would like to know what needs to be changed so that the print style sheet isn't ignored. I've shown this to my professor. However, her email wasn't clear enough, but I understand that somehow the script is ignoring the print.css and that's why the print preview shows a css-less preview.     I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons of a database design, and would like to get some feedback as to the best approach. Here is the situation: I have users of my system that have only a few required items (username, password). They can then supply a lot of optional information. This optional information continues to grow as the system grows, so I want to do it in such a way that adding new optional information is easy. Currently, I have a separate table for each piece of information. For example, there's a table called 'names' that holds 'user_id', 'first_name', and 'last_name'. There's 'address', 'occupation', etc. You get the drift. In most cases, when I talk to my database, I'm looking only for users with one particular qualifier (name, address, etc.). However, there are instances when I want to see what information a user has set. The 'edit account' page, for example, must run queries for each piece of information it wants. Is this wasteful? Is there a way I can structure my queries or my database to make it so I never have to do one query for each piece of information like that without getting my tables to huge? If i want to add 'marital status', how hard will that be if I don't have a one-table-per-attribute system? Thanks in advance.
