  • How does process of updating code with Continous Integration work?

    I want to draw a model of process of updating the source code with the use of Continous Integration. The main issue is I don't really understand how it works when there are several programmers working on various aspects of the code at the same time. I can't visualize it in my mind. Here's what I know but I might be wrong: New code is sent to repository. Continous Integration server asks Version Control System if there is a new code in repository. If there is than CIS executes tests on the code. If tests show there are problems than CIS orders VCS to revert back to working wersion of the code and communicates it to programmer. If tests are passed positively it compiles the repository code and makes new build of a game? New build is made not after ever single change, but at the end of the day I believe? Are my assumptions above correct? If yes, does it also work when there are several programmers updating repository at once? Is this enough to draw a model of the process in your opinions or did I miss something? Also, what software would I need for above process? Can you guys give examples for CIS software and VCS software and whatever else I need? Does CIS software perform code tests or do I need another tool for that and integrate it with CIS? Is there a repository software?

  • Centos repository packages vs latest developer release

    I have started to run a personal server using CentOS and I have noticed that many packages that are available to install from repository are old compared with the latest release from the developer. I know that installing packages from repository is very easy and I guess that the supplied versions are stable and prepared to work without any trouble, but I still find odd having so much software that lags behind the current version. It's my first time with linux and I don't know what is the "normal" thing, should I stick to whatever version the repository supplies, or try to get the latest from the developer? To be more precisely, the repository supplies the apache httpd web server with version 2.2, I wanted to update to 2.4, so I started removing apache and its dependencies packages that come with centos to use the latest ones, but when I was about to remove pcre v6 to replace it with v8, i found out that 132 installed packages depend on it and probably it is not a good idea to remove it, so that made me think twice about getting the latest software instead of using the packages supplied by the official repositories. Should I leave things as they are instead of going on an upgrade rampage? Thanks

  • Cron job checking for changes in Git repository

    We have just moved our server configs to a Git repository. Therefore there should not be any changes in any of the repository folders. I was thinking about how I could set up a cron job to check for any uncommited changes. How could a cron job be set up to check for changes in a Git repository? Greping the output of the git status command might just do it. Grep and cron jobs are not my strong side. Here are some sample outputs from git status: Standing the folder containing the git repository (e.g. /path/gitrepo/) with changed files: $ git status # On branch master # Changes not staged for commit: # (use "git add <file>..." to update what will be committed) # (use "git checkout -- <file>..." to discard changes in working directory) # # modified: apache2/sites-enabled/000-default # # Untracked files: # (use "git add <file>..." to include in what will be committed) # # apache2/conf.d/test no changes added to commit (use "git add" and/or "git commit -a") Standing in the folder when there is no changes: $ git status # On branch master nothing to commit (working directory clean) Update: Synced up with origin is not important. There should be no local changes. Local files that must be in place go into the .gitignore file. In addition to the server configs there are also git repos for content (static web sites, web apps, wordpress, etc). None of the repositories should have local changes. We might use Puppet in the long run since its being used for development of one of the web apps.

  • Cannot get libcurl-devl on OpenSUSE 11.3

    I have a server running OpenSUSE 11.3 that I can't really upgrade to a newer version of OpenSUSE (it's a managed appliance). I have some PHP shell scripts that need to run on the server that have a dependency on both cURL and OpenSSL. I discovered that the PHP 5.3.3 binaries on the server did not include OpenSSL but did include cURL I downloaded the latest PHP sources, extracted them, and ran ./configure --with-openssl --with-zlib --with-bcmath --with-curl --with-readline --with-libxml --enable-sockets This failed: the configure script complained that it couldn't find cURL: checking for cURL support... yes checking for cURL in default path... not found configure: error: Please reinstall the libcurl distribution - easy.h should be in /include/curl/ I tried to install libcurl by running zypper install libcurl-devl This failed too: doom:~/phpworksite/php-5.5.15 # zypper install libcurl-devl Loading repository data...   • Any home design software similar to The Sims 3?

    I tried Sketchup to sketch a home design but I find the controls a bit frustrating. I can sketch 10 times faster in The Sims 3, plus it is nicer to look at. Though the metric system may not be 1:1 ratio to reality but it's close, maybe 15%-20% off but this is a just a sketch, right? Anyway, is there any software that does home design like The Sims 3? The same ease of use but at a more professional level and a real metric system?

  • Adding JBoss repository to m2eclipse, no latest Hibernate version

    I'm trying to add JBoss repository to m2eclipse, mainly for Hibernate. It seems to work, but it can't find the latest version of Hibernate (3.5.1), only 3.5.0beta. I looked at some other packages, and they all seem a couple of months behind. What could be causing this? I'm running latest m2eclipse, and i guess latest Eclipse (it just says 20100218-1602, eclipse people think it's funny to not include version in the about dialog), on ubuntu 9.10.   • Best way to handle global state

    Hi there, I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice on 'best practices' for using global state in a web application - specifically PHP, although im looking for generic best practices i.e. design patterns etc. At the moment I just use a static class, calling it Configs. I suppose this is similar to using the registry pattern but surely there is a more elegant way of handling global data within an application - i just cant think of a better way though.

  • A way to return multiple return values from a method: put method inside class representing return value. Is it a good design?

    I need to return 2 values from a method. My approach is as follows: create an inner class with 2 fields that will be used to keep those 2 values put the method inside that class instantiate the class and call the method. The only thing that will be changed in the method is that in the end it will assign those 2 values to the fields of the instance. Then I can address those values by referencing to the fields of that object. Is it a good design and why?

  • Host a Debian repository on a Windows Web/Ftp server

    At the risk of causing a matter vs. antimatter paradox that would end the world as we know it ... Is it possible to host a Debian repository on a Windows server? We have some applications which are available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. Our web site, from where the application can be downloaded, is a Windows Server 2008 box running IIS 7. That is not going to change, and I would like to avoid having to purchase another server and/or domain. I would like to take advantage of the Debian packaging system so that I can just instruct users to add our repository to their software sources, and then they can install, get updates, resolve dependencies (some of which are not yet in the stable/main distributions of my target platforms), etc. The instructions I can find on the internet require linux-specific tools to create a local repository, but are unclear as to whether or not that can be copied to an FTP site as is, or if it requires some local daemons to be running or something.

  • Accessing SVN Repository on external drive

    I've installed SVN on my Raspberry PI and configured it to access the repository on an external hard drive. In /etc/fstab, I've have the following: //192.168.1.12/SHARE/repos /media/repos cifs sec=ntlm,username=Guest,password=,_netdev,dir_mode=0777,file_mode=0777 0 0 This mounts with no issues. When I go to add a project to the repository using the following command: sudo svn import mywebsite/ file://media/repos/mainrepository/mywebsite/ -m "Initial Upload" I get the following error: svn: E170000: Unable to connect to a repository at URL 'file://media/repos/mainrepository/mywebsite' svn: E170000: Unable to open an ra_local session to URL svn: E170000: Local URL 'file://media/repos/mainrepository/mywebsite' contains unsupported hostname The only thing I think maybe causing the issue is the file settings: drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 0 Jun 11 2009 repos As you can see the owner is root, I think it needs to be www-data, but for some reason I can't change it. Any help appreciated.

  • Software Design Idea for multi tier architecture

    I am currently investigating multi tier architecture design for a web based application in MVC3. I already have an architecture but not sure if its the best I can do in terms of extendability and performance. The current architecure has following components DataTier (Contains EF POCO objects) DomainModel (Contains Domain related objects) Global (Among other common things it contains Repository objects for CRUD to DB) Business Layer (Business Logic and Interaction between Data and Client and CRUD using repository) Web(Client) (which talks to DomainModel and Business but also have its own ViewModels for Create and Edit Views for e.g.) Note: I am using ValueInjector for convering one type of entity to another. (which is proving an overhead in this desing. I really dont like over doing this.) My question is am I having too many tiers in the above architecure? Do I really need domain model? (I think I do when I exposes my Business Logic via WCF to external clients). What is happening is that for a simple database insert it (1) create ViewModel (2) Convert ViewModel to DomainModel for Business to understand (3) Business Convert it to DataModel for Repository and then data comes back in the same order. Few things to consider, I am not looking for a perfect architecure solution as it does not exits. I am looking for something that is scalable. It should resuable (for e.g. using design patterns ,interfaces, inheritance etc.) Each Layers should be easily testable. Any suggestions or comments is much appriciated. Thanks,

    I'm trying to setup a Git server on Windows 7, using CopSsh, PuTTY and msysgit. I'm having problems cloning a repository using ssh. If I use a regular directory path, it works: $ git clone ~/vc/git/depot/test.git/ /c/dev/es/app Initialized empty Git repository in c:/dev/es/app/.git/ warning: You appear to have cloned an empty repository. Ssh, doesn't work.     Hi, I'm very new to Git and I've been following this online tutorial for converting my existing SVN repository to a Git repository and am stuck at the final hurdle. http://www.jonmaddox.com/2008/03/05/cleanly-migrate-your-subversion-repository-to-a-git-repository/ On the last step of the tutorial it says to do this: git clone my_blog_tmp my_blog However, when I do, I get the following error: fatal: 'my_blog_tmp' does not appear to be a git repository fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly Some points: 1) I'm entering the above command from within the "my_blog_tmp" directory 2) I've tried entering "git init" to make sure Git is initialised inside the "my_blog_tmp" folder but no joy.     I'm attempting to use fabric for the first time and I really like it so far, but at a certain point in my deployment script I want to clone a mercurial repository. When I get to that point I get an error: err: abort: http authorization required My repository requires http authorization and fabric doesn't prompt me for the user and password. I can get around this by changing my repository address from: https://hostname/repository to: https://user:password@hostname/repository But for various reasons I would prefer not to go this route. Are there any other ways in which I could bypass this problem?
