    The other day I blogged that the version of the SQL Server PowerShell provider (sqlps) follows the version of PowerShell. That’s all goodness, but it has appeared to cause an issue for PowerShell 2.0. the Get-Command PowerShell command-let returns an error (Object reference not set to an instance of an object) if you are using PowerShell 2.0 and sqlps – it’s a known bug, and I’m happy to report that it is fixed in SP2 for SQL Server 2008 – something that will released soon.     I have a SQL Server 2005 SP3 box that one of my developers created a temp table on that we cannot seem to remove because it somehow got brackets in the name of the table?     My main email client is Outlook 2010 for Windows 7. I also have a Mac but I do not use it that much however on the MAC you have Outlook 2011. In my Outlook 2010 for Windows 7, I have many many folders. There is one feature I would like to know if it is available or something similar which is on Outlook 2011 for the Mac. On the Outlook 2011 for the mac you can go to: Top Menu Message Move Choose Folder or press (SHIT+CMD "press" M) This bring up a box where you can just type the beginning part of the folder and all the folders with that beginning appears (To search), you select the one you want and the selected emails move to that folder. I hope I have explained it well. Does anyone know if there is a plugin on Outlook 2010 or may I have just missed the function. Thank you

  • SQL Server 2008 Install fails error reading etwcls.mof

    I receive the following error when trying to install Sql Server 2008 Standard on a Windows Server 2008 box. Error reading from file D:\x64\setup\sql_engine_core_inst_msi\PFiles\SqlServr\MSSQL.X\MSSQL\Binn\etwcls.mof. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it. When searching the interwebs I only find information about compiling this file but not reading. The file exists in the location requested. I have run the WMIDiag tool and there doesn't seem to be any issues. I am not sure what else I can do to solve this issue and can't seem to find anything on the internet about it.   • Sql Server database logs "missing"

    Here's the problem we're having: In the applications that are using the databases we get errors like: The log for database 'redactedDatabaseName' is not available. Check the event log for related error messages. Resolve any errors and restart the database. Cannot close event log because there are still event handle users active. The server log says this: Error: 9001, Severity: 21, State: 1. Context: The server in question is holding databases for a multi-tenant application and lately it's been under quite heavy loads. It has something like 3k small databases on it and these errors have been coming in the last week. We have a work-around right now, which is taking the database offline then bringing it online again. Any ideas why this is happening and how we can fix it?

  • Oredev 2011 Trip Report

    Oredev had its seventh annual conference in the city of Malmo, Sweden last week. The name "Oredev" signifies to the part that Malmo is connected with Copenhagen with Oresund bridge. There were about 1000 attendees with several speakers from all over the world. The first two days were hands-on workshops and the next three days were sessions. There were different tracks such as Java, Windows 8, .NET, Smart Phones, Architecture, Collaboration, and Entrepreneurship. And then there was Xtra(ck) which had interesting sessions not directly related to technology. I gave two slide-free talks in the Java track. The first one showed how to build an end-to-end Java EE 6 application using NetBeans and GlassFish. The complete instructions to build the application are explained in detail here. This 3-tier application used Java Persistence API, Enterprsie Java Beans, Servlet, Contexts and Dependency Injection, JavaServer Faces, and Java API for RESTful Services. The source code built during the application can be downloaded here (LINK TBD). The second session, slide-free again, showed how to take a Java EE 6 application into production using GlassFish cluster. It explained: Create a 2-instance GlassFish cluster Front-end with a Web server and a load balancer Demonstrate session replication and fail over Monitor the application using JavaScript The complete instructions for this session are available here. Oredev has an interesting way of collecting attendee feedback. The attendees drop a green, yellow, or red card in a bucket as they walk out of the session. Not everybody votes but most do. Other than the instantaneous feedback provided on twitter, this mechanism provides a more coarse grained feedback loop as well. The first talk had about 67 attendees (with 23 green and 7 yellow) and the second one had 22 (11 green and 11 yellow). The speakers' dinner is a good highlight of the conference. It is arranged in the historic city hall and the mayor welcomed all the speakers. As you can see in the pictures, it is a very royal building with lots of history behind it. Fortunately the dinner was a buffet with a much better variety unlike last year where only black soup and geese were served, which was quite cultural BTW ;-) The sauna in 85F, skinny dipping in 35F ocean and alternating between them at Kallbadhus is always very Swedish. Also spent a short evening at a friend's house socializing with other speaker/attendees, drinking Glogg, and eating Pepperkakor.  The welcome packet at the hotel also included cinnamon rolls, recommended to drink with cold milk, for a little more taste of Swedish culture. Something different at this conference was how artists from Image Think were visually capturing all the keynote speakers using images on whiteboards.   • My Codemash 2011 Retrospective

    I just got back from Codemash yesterday, and still on an adrenaline buzz. Here's my take on this years encounter: The Awesome Nearly everybody in one place Codemash is the ultimate place to catch up with community friends. This is my 3rd year visiting and I've got to know a great number of very cool people through various conferences, Give Camps and other community events. I'm finding more and more that Codemash is the best place to catch up with everybody regardless of technology interest or location. Of course I always make a whole bunch more friends while I'm there! Yay! Open Spaced I found the open spaces didn't work so well last year. This year things went a lot smoother and the topics were engaging and fresh. While I miss Alan Steven's approach of running it like an agile project, it was very cool to see that it evolving. Laptops were often cracked open, not just once but frequently! For example: Jasmine - Paired on a javascript kata using the Jasmine javascript test runner J - Sat in on a J demo from local J enthusiast, Tracy Harms Watir - More pairing, this time using Ruby with the watir-webdriver through cucumber. I'd mostly forgotten that Cucumber runs just fine without Rails. It made a change to do without. The other spaces were engaging too, but I think that's enough for that topic. Javascript Shenanigans I've already mentioned that I attended a Jasmine kata session. Jasmine is close to my heart right now every since I discovered it while on the hunt for a decent Javascript testing framework for a javascript koans project earlier this year. Well, it also got covered in the Java Precompiler and Pillar's vendor session, which was great to see. Node.js was also a reoccurring theme. Node.js in a nutshell? It's an extremely scalable Event based I/O server which runs on Javascript. I'd already encountered through a Startup Weekend project and have been noticing increasing interest of late. After encountering more node.js driven excitement from my peers at codemash I absolutely had to attend the open space on it. At least 20 people turned up and by the end we had some answers, a whole ton of new questions and an impromptu user group in the form of a twitter channel (#nodemash). I have no idea where this is going to go or how big it is going to become, but if it can cross the chasm into the enterprise it could become huge... Scala Koans I'm a bit of a Koans addict, and I really need more exposure to functional languages so I gave the Scala Koans precompiler a try. Great fun! I'm really glad I attended because I found I had a whole ton of questions. Currently the koans are available here, and the answers are here. Opportunities While we're on the subject can we change the subject now? Hai Gregory, You really need to keep the drinking for later in the day. I mean seriously, you're 34 and you still do this every single time! Sure, you made it to Chad Fowler keynote ok, but you looking a rather pale weren't you? Also might have been nice to attend 'Netflicks in the Cloud' instead of 'Sleeping It Off For People Who Should Know Better'. Kthxbye PS: Stop talking to yourself Not that I entirely regret it, I've had some of my greatest insights through late night drunken conversations at the CodeMash bar. Just might be nice to reign it in a little and get something out of the next morning too. Diversity This is something that is in the back of my mind because of conversations at Codemash as well as throughout the year; I'm realizing more and more how discouraging the IT profession is for women. I notice in the community there has been a lot of attention paid to stamping out harrasment, which is good, but there also seems to be a massive PR issue. I really don't have any solutions, but I figure it can't hurt to pay more attention to whats going on... And in Other News I now have a picture of Chad Fowler giving me more cowbell! Sadly I managed to lose the cowbell later on. Hopefully it's gone to a Better Place. The Womack Family Band joined in with the musicians jam this year. There's my cowbell again! Why must you hide from me? I also finally went in the water for the first time in all the I've been coming to codemash. Why did I wait so long?!?

  • 2011 The Year of Awesomesauce

    So I was talking to one of my friends, Cathy Dew, and I’m wondering how to start out this post.  What kind of title should I put?  Somehow we’re just randomly throwing things out and this title pops into my head the one you see above. I woke up today to the buzz of a text message.  I spent New Years laying around until 3 am watching Warehouse 13 Episodes and drinking champagne.  It was one of the best New Year’s I spent with my boyfriend and my cat.  I figured I would sleep in until Noon, but ended up waking up around 11:15 to that text message buzz.  I guess my DE, Rachel Appel, had texted me “Happy New Years”, because Rachel is that kind of person.  I immediately proceeded to check my email.  I noticed my live account had a hit.  The account I rarely ever use had an email.  I sort of had that sinking suspicion I was going to get Silverlight MVP right?  So I open the email and something out of the blue happens it says “blah blah blah SharePoint Server MVP blah blah…”.  I’m sitting here a little confused what?  Really?  Just about when you give up on something the unexplained happens.  I am grateful for what I have every day. So let me tell you a story.  I was a senior in high school and it was December 31st, 1999.  A couple days prior my grandmother was complaining she had a cold and her assisted living facility was not going to let her see a doctor.  She claimed to be very sick.  New Year’s Eve Day 1999 my grandmother was rushed to the hospital sometime very early in the morning.  My uncle, my little brother, and myself were sitting in the waiting room eagerly awaiting news.  The Sydney Opera House was playing in the background as New Years 2000 for Australia was ringing in.  They come out and they tell us my grandmother has pneumonia.  She is in the ICU in critical condition.  Eventually time passes in the day and my parents take my brother and I home.  So in the car we had a huge fight that ended in the worst new years of my life.  The next 30 days were the worst 30 days of my life.  I went to the hospital every single day to do my homework and watch my grandmother.  Each day was a challenge mentally and physically as my grandmother berated me in her demented state.  On the 30th day my grandmother ended up in critical condition in the ICU maxed out on painkillers.  At approximately 3 am I hear my parents telling me they don’t want to wake me up and that my grandmother had passed away.  I must have cried more collectively that day than any other day in my life.  Every New Years Even since I have cried thinking about who she was and what she represented.  She was human looking back she wasn’t anything great, but she was one of the positive lights in my life.  Her and my dad and my other grandmother constantly tried to make me feel great when my mother was telling me the opposite.  I’d like to think since 2000 the past 11 years have been the best 11 years of my life.  I got out of a bad situation by using the tools that I had in front of me.  Good grades and getting into a college so I could aspire to be the person that I wanted to be.  I had some great people along the way to help me out. So getting to the point I like to help people further there lives somehow in the best way I can possibly help out.  This New Years was one of the great years that helped me forget the past and focus on the present.  It makes me realize how far I’ve come since high school and even since college.  The one thing I’ve been grappling with over the years is how do you feel good about making money while helping others out.  I’d to think I try really hard to give back to my community.  I could not have done what I did without other people’s help.  I sent out an email prior to even announcing I got the award today.  I can’t say I did everything on my own.  It’s not possible.  I had the help of others every step of the way.  I’m not sure if this makes sense but the award can’t just be mine.  This award is really owned by each and everyone who helped me get here.  From my dad to my grandmother to Rachel Appel to Bob Hunt to Jason Gallicchio to Cathy Dew to Mark Rackley to Johnny Ennion to Lee Brandt to Jeff Julian to John Alexander to Lori Gowin and to many others.  Thank you guys for all the help and support.   • SQL query. An unusual join. DB implemented in sqlite-3

    This is essentially a question about constructing an SQL query. The db is implemented with sqlite3. I am a relatively new user of SQL. I have two tables and want to join them in an unusual way. The following is an example to explain the problem. Table 1 (t1): id year name ------------------------- 297 2010 Charles 298 2011 David 300 2010 Peter 301 2011 Richard Table 2 (t2) id year food --------------------------- 296 2009 Bananas 296 2011 Bananas 297 2009 Melon 297 2010 Coffee 297 2012 Cheese 298 2007 Sugar 298 2008 Cereal 298 2012 Chocolate 299 2000 Peas 300 2007 Barley 300 2011 Beans 300 2012 Chickpeas 301 2010 Watermelon I want to join the tables on id and year. The catch is that (1) id must match exactly, but if there is no exact match in Table 2 for the year in Table 1, then I want to choose the year that is the next (lower) available. A selection of the kind that I want to produce would give the following result id year matchyr name food ------------------------------------------------- 297 2010 2010 Charles Coffee 298 2011 2008 David Cereal 300 2010 2007 Peter Barley 301 2011 2010 Richard Watermelon To summarise, id=297 had an exact match for year=2010 given in Table 1, so the corresponding line for id=297, year=2010 is chosen from Table 2. id=298, year=2011 did not have a matching year in Table 2, so the next available year (less than 2011) is chosen. As you can see, I would also like to know what that matched year (whether exactly , or inexactly) actually was. I would very much appreciate (1) an indication (yes/no answer) of whether this is possible to do in SQL alone, or whether I need to look outside SQL, and (2) a solution, if that is not too onerous.
