  I'm producing an application with a few peculiar internal communication characteristics that make the usual suspects for data storage and transport (Qs and RDBMSs) ill-fitted. I'm wondering whether there is a product out there that matches the following characteristics: all data put into it is peristent all reads are delivered out of memory data is universally available data lives where it is most needed data is versioned (nice to have) updates are transactional (I'd like ACID characteristics) data is potentially replicated, but always in sync works on windows is based on or has bindings for .NET is really fast is really robust is redundant is scalable I'm looking at things like Microsoft codename "Velocity", but I am not sure whether it fits all of the above characteristics. Likewise, Memcached is not a perfect fit either. The current version of this app opts for an RDBMS with a signaling system for inter-system sync, but latency is too high and versioning of the DB is a pain. I need all the robustness, but with none of the trade-offs.

  Is there an easy way using a library to facilitate the synchronization of two hibernate instances. One running locally on a client and one running on a central server exposed via a web service. So Client tracks changes it makes, pushes them to the Server. The server ensures that the clients is not updating out of sync objects and stores the clients changes. The Client can also sync with the Server so that it can see the changes made by other clients. The idea is that the client can be run offline, without access to the server and only come online to synchronize when needed.

• Local Data Cache - How do I refresh the local db when I add fields to remote db?

  I'm using a Local Data Cache in an ASP.NET 3.5 environment. I made a change in my main database by adding a new field. I double click on my .SYNC file in my project to startup the Local Data Cache wizard again. The wizard starts and I click OK with the hopes that it'll re-query my database and add the new field to the local database file. Instead, I get an error saying "Synchronizing the databae failed with the message: Unable to enumerate changes at the DbServerSyncProvider..." The only way I know to get things working again is to delete the .SYNC file along with the local database and start it from scratch. There's got to be an easier way... anyone know it?

• How to access USB ports in java

  Hi I'm trying to write a java application that accesses the usb ports to some read and writes to a device connected through usb. The problem I face is that I don't know what exactly to use in java to do such a thing. I searched online a found something called jusb but all the post seem fairly old. Currently I'm using the RXTX libraries but I sometimes run into some sync error. When I use C# to do the equivalent it requires far less code and I don't face any of the same sync error. My question is there anything built into the latest version of the JRE I can use to access the usb ports that is just as easy as the equivalent C# code? Sorry if the question isn't too clear, I'm fairly noob with coding usb IO.

• mdadm: Win7-install created a boot partition on one of my RAID6 drives. How to rebuild?

  My problem happened when I attempted to install Windows 7 on it's own SSD. The Linux OS I used which has knowledge of the software RAID system is on a SSD that I disconnected prior to the install. This was so that windows (or I) wouldn't inadvertently mess it up. However, and in retrospect, foolishly, I left the RAID disks connected, thinking that windows wouldn't be so ridiculous as to mess with a HDD that it sees as just unallocated space. Boy was I wrong! After copying over the installation files to the SSD (as expected and desired), it also created an ntfs partition on one of the RAID disks. Both unexpected and totally undesired! . I changed out the SSDs again, and booted up in linux. mdadm didn't seem to have any problem assembling the array as before, but if I tried to mount the array, I got the error message: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/md0, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so dmesg: EXT4-fs (md0): ext4_check_descriptors: Block bitmap for group 0 not in group (block 1318081259)! EXT4-fs (md0): group descriptors corrupted! I then used qparted to delete the newly created ntfs partition on /dev/sdd so that it matched the other three /dev/sd{b,c,e}, and requested a resync of my array with echo repair > /sys/block/md0/md/sync_action This took around 4 hours, and upon completion, dmesg reports: md: md0: requested-resync done. A bit brief after a 4-hour task, though I'm unsure as to where other log files exist (I also seem to have messed up my sendmail configuration). EXT4-fs (md0): group descriptors corrupted! I'm a bit unsure where to proceed from here, and trying stuff "to see if it works" is a bit too risky for me. This is what I suggest I should attempt to do: Tell mdadm that /dev/sdd (the one that windows wrote into) isn't reliable anymore, pretend it is newly re-introduced to the array, and reconstruct its content based on the other three drives. I also could be totally wrong in my assumptions, that the creation of the ntfs partition on /dev/sdd and subsequent deletion has changed something that cannot be fixed this way. My question: Help, what should I do? If I should do what I suggested , how do I do that? From reading documentation, etc, I would think maybe: mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --set-faulty /dev/sdd mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --remove /dev/sdd mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --re-add /dev/sdd However, the documentation examples suggest /dev/sdd1, which seems strange to me, as there is no partition there as far as linux is concerned, just unallocated space. Maybe these commands won't work without. Maybe it makes sense to mirror the partition table of one of the other raid devices that weren't touched, before --re-add. Something like: sfdisk -d /dev/sdb | sfdisk /dev/sdd Bonus question: Why would the Windows 7 installation do something so st...potentially dangerous? • Is there a recommended approach to handle saving data in response to within-site navigation without

  Hello all, Preamble to scope my question: I have a web app (or site, this is an internal LAN site) that uses jQuery and AJAX extensively to dynamically load the content section of the UI in the browser. A user navigates the app using a navigation menu. Clicking an item in the navigation menu makes an AJAX call to php, and php then returns the content that is used to populate the central content section. One of the pages served back by php has a table form, set up like a spreadsheet, that the user enters values into. This table is always kept in sync with data in the database. So, when the table is created, is it populated with the relevant database data. Then when the user makes a change in a "cell", that change immediately is written back to the database so the table and database are always in sync. This approach was take to reassure users that the data they entered has been saved (long story...), and to alleviate them from having to click a save button of some kind. So, this always in sync idea is great, except that a user can enter a value in a cell, not take focus out of the cell, and then take any number of actions that would cause that last value to be lost: e.g. navigate to another section of the site via the navigation menu, log out of the app, close the browser, etc. End of preamble, on to the issue: I initially thought that wasn't a problem, because I would just track what data was "dirty" or not saved, and then in the onunload event I would do a final write to the database. Herein lies the rub: because of my clever (or not so clever, not sure) use of AJAX and dynamically loading the content section, the user never actually leaves the original url, or page, when the above actions are taken, with the exception of closing the browser. Therefore, the onunload event does not fire, and I am back to losing the last data again. My question, is there a recommended way to handle figuring out if a person is navigating away from a "section" of your app when content is dynamically loaded this way? I can come up with a solution I think, that involves globals and tracking the currently viewed page, but I thought I would check if there might be a more elegant solution out there, or a change I could make in my design, that would make this work.   i have been trying to create a vertical bar chart with a d3 fisheye cartesian distortion with only the x-axis being distorted.   I hate to ask this question; for some reason I can't figure it out on my own. I have a vertical LinearLayout that contains a custom View that I've defined in my app and and a TextView. I'd like my custom View to be aligned on the top of the screen and the TextView to be aligned at the bottom of the screen. Unfortunately, no matter what changes I make to the attributes of the XML file, my custom View always seems to be centered vertically when I run the emulator.   Hi all, I am able to work with NSTokenField, it is easy to use.. but I want your suggestions on how can I customize it just like it is in "To/ CC" fields in mac mail ie. when no. of tokens in a token field increases height of "To" field gets increased to a certain limit then a vertical scroller starts appearing! By default when we use a token field neither its height gets increased nor a vertical scroller appears! I tried different combinations in IB but I could not obtain mac mail like functionality.   I am starting a new application and I am willing to use the Dashboard pattern. For example: The Google IO app uses it: My issue is that the amount of buttons will be more than six. I'm not sure if I should use vertical or horizontal scrolling. Vertical scrolling could be done with a ScrollView or a GridView but I am not sure which would be the easier way to implement the horizontal version. I was thinking of using an HorizontalScrollView but it doesn't have pagination. It should feel similar to the tweetdeck app. How would you implement it?

If a user places their finger on the UitableView, and moves (swipes) horizontally, The delegate method below is invoked (void)scrollViewDidScroll:(UIScrollView *)scrollView with scrollView isEqual theUIScrollView If the user lifts their finger and places it back down on the UITableView and moves in a vertical direction The delegate method below is invoked (void)scrollViewDidScroll:(UIScrollView *)scrollView with scrollView isEqual = theUITable If however the user places their finger and moves in a horizontally (void)scrollViewDidScroll:(UIScrollView *)scrollView with scrollView isEqual theUIScrollView If the user then moves the finger (without lifting it) in a vertical direction. delegate method scrollViewDidScroll is not invoked at all. (The reverse is true too.) I note that the "Pulse News" app seems to behave in the above manner.. Ultimately I want to figure out how to get the UITableView and UIScrollview moving in a "unidirectional" fashion, with one finger kept on the screen. Thanks...

• jar dependencies in android- no class definition found exception

  I'm trying to use the gdata java client library on android and have managed a decent hack to get it working. However because the jar for gdata had some package discrepancies with android I had to import the source into my project. This source is dependent on the JavaMail API and the JavaBeans Activation Framework as specified here. My issue is that the JavaMail jar throws a class definition not found when seeking a class which is in the Activation Framework jar. A stack trace is listed below. I am working in Eclipse and have both jars in a lib folder and added to my build path. • Setting tabindex in dynamic table vertically then horizontally

  I have a page that is currently generating dynamically created textboxes in a table format. The users are requesting that the tab order be changed from horizontal-vertical to vertical-horizontal. I know that you can use the tabindex attribute to control the tab ordering, but I can't for the life of me figure out the right way to get the sequential number properly for the textboxes. I guess this is more of a math question than anything else! FYI, the textboxes are made while looping two different collections. First collection looped to make the rows, for each row, second collection (which is a property of the first collection objects) is looped to create the columns. Any help would be greatly appreciated.   How does message loops in erlang work, are they sync when it comes to processing messages? As far as I understand, the loop will start by "receive"ing a message and then perform something and hit another iteration of the loop. So that has to be sync? right? If multiple clients send messages to the same message loop, then all those messages are queued and performed one after another, or? To process multiple messages in parallell, you would have to spawn multiple message loops in different processes, right? Or did I misunderstand all of it?

• How to change ScrollView's position after touch?

  I'm trying to make a ScrollView with a list of numbers in it that the user can select from. After the user touches and scrolls, after the finger is lifted I want the scroll to "snap" to the item in the middle of the ScrollView and give me the output. My ScrollView contains a vertical linear layout with TextView objects in it. The ScrollView's vertical size is about 60sp. I think this would involve the ScrollView.onTouch with a ACTION_UP, but I don't know how to use it. Also, is there a way to get an item's index or value based on a position in the list? Thanks!

  I've installed MYOB on SBS server 2003. Why? Because the users were using offline files and it turned out there was about 7 versions of the file both locally and on the server that were out of sync... So the only way I could control the file access was to force RDP to the server... Always using the server file and always in sync... Anyway, this issue occurs in MYOB Accounting Plus 18.5. Cannot get the function address for "MAPISendMail" from "MAPI32.dll" Please check your Mapi installation I just want to send mail from MYOB but I can't - MYOB support is useless and blames everyone else...(i.e. Microsoft and outlook) I have found other people with the same problem whose resolution appears to be to copy MAPI32.dll into myob directory but that hasn't worked for me...

I'm still seeing a vertical scrollbar as in this image: Is there a way right in the definition code I listed to ensure that the height grows enough so that a vertical scrollbar doesn't show? Or, do I need to do this programmatically before opening the dialog box? Edit 1 Not sure why, but Chrome is displaying this fine but IE 8 isn't. I need it to specifically work in IE 8 so I believe I'm just going to put a bottom margin on the text.

The textblocks seem to be slightly larger than the listbox, causing the horizontal scrollbar to appear. This is strange because their widths are bound to the lisbox's ActualWidth. Also, if you add a few more items to the listbox (just cut and paste in XamlPad) causing the vertical scrollbar to appear, the width of the textblocks do not resize to the vertical scrollbar. How do I keep the textblocks inside the listbox, with or without the vertical scrollbar?

• Java consistent synchronization

  We are facing the following problem in a Spring service, in a multi-threaded environment: three lists are freely and independently accessed for Read once in a while (every 5 minutes), they are all updated to new values. There are some dependencies between the lists, making that, for instance, the third one should not be read while the second one is being updated and the first one already has new values ; that would break the three lists consistency. My initial idea is to make a container object having the three lists as properties. Then the synchronization would be first on that object, then one by one on each of the three lists. • Wraping EditText Boxes in Layout

  I have a UI that has 6 EditText boxes. 3 of those EditText boxes don't show up when in vertical orientation. I was hoping that wrap_content would wrap the non-showing 3 to the next line but found out that LinearLayout only allows for one row. When in horizontal orientation I get all 6 of them showing. I tried a TableView with two rows of 3 each. That looks dorky when in horizontal orientation. Do I need code to determine when the orientation changes to redraw those EditText boxes so it looks better or is there some layout that will automatically wrap when in vertical orientation?

• Programmatically inviting contacts to Google Chat

  Hello folks, I'm writing a sync application for Lotus Notes and Google (I know, there are some of them out there, but they are either not free or sync only calendar (or only contacts) and most of them cannot deal with local mailfiles). This works so far, but I have a problem when syncing contacts: under certain circustances, the contacts have to be deleted and recreated in Google. This causes them to disappear from the chat list in GMail and the people have to be re-invited manually. Is there any way to send these invites through the API? Thanks in advance DBa

• How to align item to the very bottom within flexible box layout column?

I tried all the alignment properties, i must be doing something wrong. Any ideas???
