• How can I install asp.net mvc 2 on IIS7?

  I have developed an ASP.NET MVC 2 website, and now need to deploy it to my web server. I've overcome some hurdles already, since ASP.NET was not installed etc. but I've now got to the point where I can serve up plain content files, and if I try to hit one of my MVC URLs I get this: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.Mvc, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. Not surprising, that, as I've not installed MVC2. Problem is, I can't find any good information about how to install it! The Microsoft Download Center lists 3 files, none of which look promising: ASP.NET-MVC-2-RTM-Release-Notes.doc AspNetMVC2_VS2008.exe mvc2-ms-pl.zip The site doesn't bother to explain what the files actually are, but I assume that the last file is the source code. That's what it looks like, anyway. The release notes are no help whatsoever, since they're all about installing on your development machine, and indeed the name of the EXE makes it clear that that's all about Visual Studio integration too. So how do I actually deploy the darn thing? The other option linked to from Scott Gu's blog is the Microsoft Web Platform Installer. Now, I don't want to install more than just MVC2, and I already have IIS etc. set up, so this seems a bit heavy. But it's all academic, as it refuses to run on my server, saying "your system is not supported" or words to that effect. (The server is Windows Server 2008 Standard SP2, so I really don't know what it's problem is). Help! [It's ridiculous that this should be so hard - or perhaps not hard at all, but certainly a well-kept secret!]

• Impersonation in ASP.NET MVC

  I have an Action that needs to read a file from a secure location, so I have to use impersonation to read the file. But if I replace these 2 lines: var bytes = System.IO.File.ReadAllBytes(path); return File(bytes, "application/octet-stream", "FileName"); with this: return File(path, "application/octet-stream", "FileName"); It does NOT work and I get the error message: Access to the path 'c:\projects\uploads\1\aa2bcbe7-ea99-499d-add8-c1fdac561b0e\Untitled 2.csv' is denied. I guess using the File results with a path, tries to open the file at a later time in the request pipeline when I have already "undone" the impersonation. Remember, the impersonation code works because I can read the file in the bytes array. What I want to do though is stream the file to the client. Any idea how I can work around this? • Changing the Android emulator locale automatically

  For automated testing (using Hudson) I have a script that generates a bunch of emulators for many combinations of Android OS version, screen resolution, screen density and language. This works fine, except for the language part. I need to find a way to change the Android system locale automatically. Here's some approaches I can think of, in order of preference: Extracting/editing/repacking a QEMU image directly before starting the emulator Running some sort of system-locale-changing APK on the emulator after startup Changing the locale settings on the emulator filesystem after startup Changing the locale settings in some SQLite DB on the emulator after startup Running a key sequence (via the emulator's telnet interface) that would open the settings app and change the locale Manually starting the emulator for each platform version, changing the locale by hand in the settings, saving it and archiving the images for later deployment Any ideas whether this can be done, either via the above methods or otherwise? Do you know where locale settings are persisted to/read from by the system? Solution: Thanks to dtmilano's info about the relevant properties, and some further investigation on my part, I came up with a solution even better and simpler simpler than all the ideas above! I have updated the answer below with the details.

• ASP.Net FormsAuthentication Redirect Loses the cookie between Redirect and Application_AuthenticateR

  I have a FormsAuthentication cookie that is persistent and works independently in a development, test, and production environment. I have a user that can authenticate, the user object is created, the authentication cookie is added to the response: 'Custom object to grab the TLD from the url authCookie.Domain = myTicketModule.GetTopLevelDomain(Request.ServerVariables("HTTP_HOST")) FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(authTicket.Name, False) Response.SetCookie(authCookie) The user gets processed a little bit to check for a first time login, security questions, etc, and is then redirected with the following tidbit: Session.Add("ForceRedirect", "/FirstTimeLogin.aspx") Response.Redirect("~/FirstTimeLogin.aspx", True) With a debug break, I can verify that the cookie collection holds both a cookie not related to authentication that I set for a different purpose and the formsauthentication cookie. Then the next step in the process occurs at the ApplicationAuthenticateRequest in the global.asax: Sub Application_AuthenticateRequest(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs) Dim formsCookieName As String = myConfigurationManager.AppSettings("FormsCookieName") Dim authCookie As HttpCookie = Request.Cookies(formsCookieName) At this point, for this ONE user authCookie is nothing. I have 15,000 other users who are not impacted in this manner. However, for one user the cookie just vanishes without a trace. I've seen this before with w3wp.exe exceptions, state server exceptions and other IIS process related exceptions, but I'm getting no exceptions in the event log. w3wp.exe is not crashing, the state server has some timeouts but they appear unrelated (as verified by timestamps) and it only happens to this one user on this one domain (this code is used across 2 different TLDs with approximately 10 other subdomains). One avenue I'm investigating is that the cookie might just be too large. I would think that there would be a check for the size of the cookie going into the response, and I wouldn't think it would impact it this way. Any ideas why the request might dumping the cookie? NOTE: The secondary cookie I mentioned that I set also gets dumped (and it's very tiny). EDIT-NOTE: The session token is NOT lost when this happens. However, since the authentication cookie is lost, it is ignored and replaced on a subsequent login.

• How can I use Window.ShowActivated = false with Maximized window?

  I have an application that has a splash screen shown before I create my main window. I want to avoid the main window stealing the focus when it gets created if the user has focused another application while the splash screen was shown. My application's startup looks like this: private void Application_Startup(object sender, StartupEventArgs e) { SplashScreenService.Start(); // Initializing stuff... ... // Ready to open the main window. MainWindow mainWindow = MainWindow(); mainWindow.ShowActivated = SplashScreenService.HasFocus(); mainWindow.ShowDialog(); } To prevent the main window from getting activated, I'm setting Window.ShowActivated to false, only if the splash screen has lost the focus. But this causes an exception: InvalidOperationException: Cannot show Window when ShowActivated is false and WindowState is set to Maximized. Indeed, my MainWindow sets the WindowState to Maximized (restored from previous session settings). I don't understand why there is such a limitation with the ShowActivated feature. I couldn't find any documentation about this issue. I tried forcing WindowState to Normal when ShowActivated is false, and it prevents the exception, but it also activates the window! Maybe changing the window state actually causes an activation? Is there a trick I can use to work around this? I want to restore my main window in a maximized state, and not have the main window steal focus away from other applications if the user has focused away from my app during the splash screen.

  I have ComputerA on DomainA running as userA needing to copy a very large file to ComputerB on WorkgroupB which has the ip of 192.168.10.2 to a windows share that only userB has write access to. • Really slow obtaining font metrics.

  So the problem I have is that I start my application by displaying a simple menu. To size and align the text correctly I need to obtain font metrics and I cannot find a way to do it quickly. I tested my program and it looks like whatever method I use to obtain font metrics the first call takes over 500 milliseconds!? Because of it the time it takes to start-up my application is much longer than necessary. I don't know if it is platform specific or not, but just in case, I'm using Mac OS 10.6.2 on MacBook Pro (hardware isn't an issue here). If you know a way of obtaining font metrics quicker please help.   I have taken backup of SQL Server 2008 DB on server, and download them to local environment. I am trying to restore that database and it is keep on giving me following error. An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo) ------------------------------ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The media family on device 'C:\go4sharepoint_1384_8481.bak' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family. RESTORE HEADERONLY is terminating abnormally.   Anyone have experience with Quick Sequence Diagram Editor? The combination of instant display + text source code + Java implementation is very attractive to me, but I can't quite figure out how to make the syntax do what I want, and the documentation's not very clear. I have a situation which is single-threaded, but there's state involved, and all the messages are asynchronous. I guess that means I should use an external object to represent that state and its lifetime. If anybody sees a simpler solution or a problem, please let me know! The eCommerce system I'm using sends me some data along with a signature. They also give me their public key in .pem format.   I wrote a program to demonstrate the behavior of DTC timeouts with multiple threads. I'm getting several exceptions, seemingly at random. Are all of these simple Timeouts, or are some of them indicative of deeper problems (connection pool interactions, etc)? The Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MS DTC) has cancelled the distributed transaction. Distributed transaction completed. Either enlist this session in a new transaction or the NULL transaction. The transaction associated with the current connection has completed but has not been disposed. The transaction must be disposed before the connection can be used to execute SQL statements. The operation is not valid for the state of the transaction. ExecuteReader requires an open and available Connection. The connection's current state is closed.   Hi, We have a web application, running in an application pool as 'NETWORK SERVICE'. The web application connects to a service (.svc) on another web server. The other web server also has the service hosted as 'NETWORK SERVICE'. I believe this is the default. • JSP compilation error upon changing XML parser to Xerces

  All, I'm working on a java webapp that we deploy in the Resin web app server. I have been doing some XML parsing for a new part of the application, and realized that our app was using Resin classes to do the parsing. I wanted to get away from that and use something more standard for a number of reasons, so I set these system properties in my resin config file (and added the xerces jar to my classpath): <system-property javax.xml.parsers.DocumentBuilderFactory="org.apache.xerces.jaxp.DocumentBuilderFactoryImpl"/> <system-property javax.xml.parsers.SAXParserFactory="org.apache.xerces.jaxp.SAXParserFactoryImpl"/> And, now I'm getting JSP compilation errors on several pages (I guess Resin's built in parser was more lenient). The error reads: org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: The value of attribute "title" associated with an element type "display:column" must not contain the '<' character. And, the 'display:column' tag on some pages does indeed contain markup in the 'title' attribute. Here's an example: <display:column scope='col' class=" appealColorBG selectAllWidth" title="<span class='centerThis'><label for='selectAll'>Select All</label><br /> <input type='checkbox' name='selectAll' id='selectAll' onClick='selectAllCheckboxes();'/></span> " > That's some ugly JSP code, I know, but it's also code that's already in production, so I'm hesitant to change it. Does anyone know of a way that I can set xerces so that it will allow the JSP to compile as is?

  I'm trying to call a function in a Silverlight 4 component to open a file dialog and upload a file to the server. Everything works well within Silverlight but I'd like to call the component from JavaScript. So I call the button click handler from a C#-function which is [ScriptableMember]. I get the following error when calling the function: System.Security.SecurityException: Dialogs must be user-initiated. at System.Windows.Browser.ManagedObjectInfo.Invoke(ManagedObject obj, InvokeType invokeType, String memberName, ScriptParam[] args) at System.Windows.Hosting.ManagedHost.InvokeScriptableMember(IntPtr pHandle, Int32 nMemberID, Int32 nInvokeType, Int32 nArgCount, ScriptParam[] pArgs, ScriptParam& pResult, ExceptionInfo& pExcepInfo) I based my code on the tutorial by Tim Heuer that can be found here: http://www.silverlight.net/learn/videos/silverlight-videos/openfiledialog-and-file-upload/ I understand why the error is thrown, sort of, the 'click' from the user is done in JavaScript and probably is not going through to Silverlight. For Silverlight this is merely a function call. Is this new policy from Silverlight 4? Is it still possible to only use Silverlight behind to screens to upload a file? Any help is appreciated.
