• June 23, 1983: First Successful Test of the Domain Name System [Geek History]

  Nearly 30 years ago the first Domain Name System (DNS) was tested and it changed the way we interacted with the internet. Nearly impossible to remember number addresses became easy to remember names. Without DNS you’d be browsing a web where numbered addresses pointed to numbered addresses. Google, for example, would look like http://209.85.148.105/ in your browser window. That’s assuming, of course, that a numbers-based web every gained enough traction to be popular enough to spawn a search giant like Google. How did this shift occur and what did we have before DNS? From Wikipedia: The practice of using a name as a simpler, more memorable abstraction of a host’s numerical address on a network dates back to the ARPANET era. Before the DNS was invented in 1983, each computer on the network retrieved a file called HOSTS.TXT from a computer at SRI. The HOSTS.TXT file mapped names to numerical addresses. A hosts file still exists on most modern operating systems by default and generally contains a mapping of the IP address 127.0.0.1 to “localhost”. Many operating systems use name resolution logic that allows the administrator to configure selection priorities for available name resolution methods. The rapid growth of the network made a centrally maintained, hand-crafted HOSTS.TXT file unsustainable; it became necessary to implement a more scalable system capable of automatically disseminating the requisite information. At the request of Jon Postel, Paul Mockapetris invented the Domain Name System in 1983 and wrote the first implementation. The original specifications were published by the Internet Engineering Task Force in RFC 882 and RFC 883, which were superseded in November 1987 by RFC 1034 and RFC 1035.Several additional Request for Comments have proposed various extensions to the core DNS protocols. Over the years it has been refined but the core of the system is essentially the same. When you type “google.com” into your web browser a DNS server is used to resolve that host name to the IP address of 209.85.148.105–making the web human-friendly in the process. • What resources are there for creating a dedicated NES emulator box?

  Where do I start, and what communities should I get involved in, in order to achieve the following? Ideally, I'd like to have a box that does the following (doesn't have to do this out of the box, I'm just looking to be able to achieve these goals through configs and necessary dependencies): Either bypasses login, or auto login Auto-start FCEUX with options that will (a) automatically start a ROM of my choosing, and (b) go into full-screen mode. You can assume that before I get that far, I've already configured the input devices and video options. I'd like to create (or install, if it exists) a full-screen app that takes a list of ROMs, allows me to select one with a gamepad/arcade stick, and press a button to open that game Be able to map a button on a gamepad/arcade stick to the "Power off" or exit function of the emulator, such that it will take me back to the ROM selection screen. I've already successfully installed FCEUX and tested it with an arcade stick I own, so I'm not looking for an emulator installer guide. I don't know if the ROM selector app exists already, but I'm a Java developer, and could probably create one (so long as it's not too difficult to support controllers - I was thinking of using Slick2D for this - a gaming library that I'm already pretty familiar with). The goal would be a dedicated box that I have connected to my TV. I power it on. It boots up and starts the ROM selection app, which passes the proper parameters to FCEUX (or another emulator that I might switch to at a later time), and I'm ready to go. Basically an NES emulator as a real, living room console. Also, as far as mapping a controller button to functions in the app, well, I've also played around with hardware, and it would be pretty trivial for me to modify a gamepad to trigger key presses. I just don't want to go to that length if it's not necessary.

• Connection timed out exception, why?

  I am developing an application which uses embedded tomcat server 7, and deploys a web application on embedded server. My application accesses the embedded webapp through Rest APIs, but my clients are getting Connection Timed Out exceptions and port is also not blocked. I never gets this exception when I install this application on my local machine. Some points: IP address is used in the host name part (They are able to access this IP address on other port) Port is not blocked We are using Apache HttpClient library to access the URL Timeout interval seems not to be an issue. What are the possible reasons for this exception Connection Timed Out? or How can I simulate this problem on my local machine? Any pointers would be helpful.

It weighed 29 pounds more than any persons lap could hold.  Then the term “portable computer” meant you could remove it from the building and take it else where.  Today I am typing on this entry on a Macbook Air which weighs 2.38 pounds. This morning Amazons front page main title is: “Much More for Much Less” I was born at the right time to start with the CPM operating system on the Kaypro thru the DOS, Windows, Linux, Mac OSX and mobile phone operating systems and languages.  If you are not aware Technology is moving at a rapid pace.  The New iPad (those who are keeping score – iPad4) is replacing a 7 month old machine the New iPad (iPad 3) I have used and owned many technology devices in my life.  The main point that most of the reader who are in the USA overlook is the fact that we are in the USA.  The devices we purchase have a great digital garden to support them.  The Kaypro computer had a 7-inch screen.  It was a TV tube with two colors – Black and Green.  You could see the 80-column screen flicker with characters – have you every played Pac-Man emulated on the screen with the ABC characters. Traveling across the world you will find that not all apps on your device will function as they did back home because they are not offered outside of your country of origin. I think the main question a buyer of technology should be asking is Function.  The greatest Specs with out function limit you.  The most beautiful form with out function is the same as a crystal vase on your shelf – not a good cereal bowl in the morning. Microsoft Surface RT, Amazon Kindle Fire and Apple iPad all great devices in their respective customers hands. My advice for those looking to purchase on this year:  If the device is your only technology device you buy what you WANT and LIKE. Consider this parallel universe if its not your only device?  Ever go shopping for clothing, shoes, and accessories with your wife, girlfriend, sister or mother?  If you listen carefully you will hear the little voices coming out of there heads saying:  “This goes well with that and I can use it also with that outfit” ”Do you think this clashes with that?”  “Ohh I love how that combination looks on you”.  Portable devices such as tablets and computers can offer a whole lot more when they are combined with the digital echo system you have at home and the manufacturer offers online. Pros of each Device: Microsoft Surface RT: There is a new functionality named SmartGlass which will let you share the content off your tablet to your XBOX 360.  Microsoft office is loaded on the tablet.  You can have more than one user profile on the tablet if you share it with others.   Amazon Kindle or Kindle HD: If you are an Amazon consumer with an annual Amazon Prime service you can consume videos and read books off the Amazon site.  Its the cheapest device.  Its a step up from the kindle reader in many ways.   Apple Ipad or Ipad mini: Over 270 Thousand applications.  Airplay permits you the ability to share to your TV screen. If you are a cord cutter (a person who gets their entertainment content over the web or air vs Cable Providers) the Airplay or Smart glass are a huge bonus.  iPad mini or not: The mini will fit in a purse where the larger one will not.  Its lighter which makes it nice to hold for prolonged periods.  It has an option for LTE wireless which non of the other sub 9 inch tables offer.  The screen is non retina which means the applications are smaller.  Speaking with individuals who are above 50 in age that wear glasses they retina does not make a difference for them however they prefer the larger iPad over the new mini.   Happy Shopping this Channuka Season.   The Kosher Coder.   Follow me on twitter @KosherCoder

• Designing Content-Based ETL Process with .NET and SFDC

  As my firm makes the transition to using SFDC as our main operational system, we've spun together a couple of SFDC portals where we can post customer-specific documents to be viewed at will. As such, we've had the need for pseudo-ETL applications to be implemented that are able to extract metadata from the documents our analysts generate internally (most are industry-standard PDFs, XML, or MS Office formats) and place in networked "queue" folders. From there, our applications scoop of the queued documents and upload them to the appropriate SFDC CRM Content Library along with some select pieces of metadata. I've mostly used DbAmp to broker communication with SFDC (DbAmp is a Linked Server provider that allows you to use SQL conventions to interact with your SFDC Org data). I've been able to create [console] applications in C# that work pretty well, and they're usually structured something like this: static void Main() { // Load parameters from app.config. // Get documents from queue. var files = someInterface.GetFiles(someFilterOrRegexPattern); foreach (var file in files) { // Extract metadata from the file. // Validate some attributes of the file; add any validation errors to an in-memory // structure (e.g. List<ValidationErrors>). if (isValid) { // Upload using some wrapper for an ORM an someInterface.Upload(meta.Param1, meta.Param2, ...); } else { // Bounce the file } } // Report any validation errors (via message bus or SMTP or some such). } And that's pretty much it. Most of the time I wrap all these operations in a "Worker" class that takes the needed interfaces as constructor parameters. This approach has worked reasonably well, but I just get this feeling in my gut that there's something awful about it and would love some feedback. Is writing an ETL process as a C# Console app a bad idea? I'm also wondering if there are some design patterns that would be useful in this scenario that I'm clearly overlooking. Thanks in advance!

• Installing both lxml 3.1.2 and lxml2 on ubuntu 12.04

So here it is again, reformulated. On the lxml site they suggest that it is possible to have both lxml2 and the newest version of lxml on ubuntu: Using lxml with python-libxml2 If you want to use lxml together with the official libxml2 Python bindings (maybe because one of your dependencies uses it), you must build lxml statically. Otherwise, the two packages will interfere in places where the libxml2 library requires global configuration, which can have any kind of effect from disappearing functionality to crashes in either of the two. To get a static build, either pass the --static-deps option to the setup.py script, or run pip with the STATIC_DEPS or STATICBUILD environment variable set to true, i.e. STATIC_DEPS=true pip install lxml The STATICBUILD environment variable is handled equivalently to the STATIC_DEPS variable, but is used by some other extension packages, too. I am generally confused about how pip packages and ubuntu packages get along, so I hesitate to run STATIC_DEPS=true pip install lxml. Will it damage/confuse my installed lxml2 package? The suggestion on SO was to install the new lxml in a virtualenv. That looks like the best way to go, but the lxml site is suggesting that a dual installation will work also. In general: what happens if I use pip (to get a newer install) for a package that is already installed by apt-get?

• Upstart: How does rc job work / order of (contradicting) "start on ..." and "stop on ..." stanzas

  Hi, I just can't understand how Upstart's rc job definition in Natty 11.04 works. To illustrate the problem, here is the definition (empty lines and comments are left out): start on runlevel [0123456] stop on runlevel [!$RUNLEVEL] export RUNLEVEL export PREVLEVEL console output env INIT_VERBOSE task exec /etc/init.d/rc $RUNLEVEL Let's suppose we currently are in runlevel 2 and the rc job is stopped (that is exactly the situation after booting my box and logging in via SSH). Now, let's assume that the system switches to runlevel 3, for example due to a command like "telinit 3" given by root. What will happen to the rc job? Obviously, the rc job will be started since it is currently stopped and the event runlevel 3 is matching the start events. But from now on, things are unclear to me: According to the manual $RUNLEVEL evaluates to the new runlevel when the job is started (that means 3 in our example). Therefore, the next stanza "stop on runlevel [!$RUNLEVEL]" translates to "stop on runlevel [!3]"; that means we have a first stanza which will trigger the job, but the second stanza will never stop the job and seems to be useless. Since I know that the Ubuntu / Upstart people won't do useless things, I must be heavily misunderstanding something. I would be grateful for any explanation. While trying to understand this, an additional question came to my mind. If I had contradicting start and stop triggers, for example start on foo stop on foo what would happen? I swear I never will do that, but I am nevertheless very interested in how Upstart handles that on the theoretical level. Thank you very much! Editing the question as a reaction on geekosaur's first answer: I can see the parallelism, but it is not that easy (at least, not to me). Let's assume the job aurrently is still running, and a new runlevel event comes in (of course, the new runlevel is different from the current one). Then, the following should happen: 1) The job is single instance. That means that "start on ..." won't be triggered since the job is currently running; $RUNLEVEL is not touched. 2) "stop on ..." will be triggered since the new runlevel is different from $RUNLEVEL, so the job will be aborted. 3) Now, the job is stopped and waiting. I can't see how it is restarted with the new runlevel. AFAIK, initctl emits events only once, so "start on ..." won't be triggered and the new runlevel won't be entered. I know that I still misunderstanding something, and I am grateful for explanations. Thank you very much!

I'm using a cron to have it run once a day. In reality the macbook isn't always on, so I'm looking for a way to run rsync when ever the two computers are connected on the same wifi network. So I'm guessing the best place is to somehow run rsync when the airport is connected. Whats the best way

• How do I draw a single Triangle with XNA and fill it with a Texture?

  I know many of you have been working on Oracle's Exalogic and other Engineered Systems. With partitions enabled now, things have gone multi dimension. But its fun. Isn't it ? While you have some EoIB configurations together with InfiniBand partitions, the VNICs are not coming up and staying in WAIT-VHUB state ?  Chances are that you have forgot to add InfiniBand Gateway switches' Bridge-X port GUIDs to your partition. These must be added as FULL members for EoIB to work properly. VHUB means a virtual hub in EoIB. Bridge-x is the access point for hosts to work over EoIB so thats why it must be a full member in partition. Para dar inicio a la serie de post que escribiré sobre que es Membeship y cuáles son las funcionalidades principales daremos unas definiciones. Tal como se menciono anteriormente con el membership provider podemos crear un sistema de control de usuarios completos, entre las funcionalidades principales podemos encontrar: * Creación de usuarios * Almacenamiento de información en base de datos * Autenticación, bloqueos y seguimiento Otras de las ventajas que cabe resaltar, es que, algunos de los controles de asp.net ya traen "naturalmente" en sus funciones la implementación del membership provider, tal como el control "Login" o los controles de estado de usuario, lo cual nos permite que con solo arrastrarlos al diseñador estén funcionando. Membership provider es poderoso, pero su funcionalidad y seguridad se ven aumentadas cuando se integra con otros proveedores de asp.net como lo son RoleProvider y Profile Provider (estos los discutiremos en otros post). En la siguiente figura, podemos ver como se distribuyen algunoS provider creados por Microsoft Antes de iniciar con la implementación de membership debes conocer cosas básicas como el espacio de nombres al que pertenece, el cual es: System.Web.Security que se encuentra dentro del ensamblado System.Web. Algo que debe tomarse en cuenta, es que, para poder utilizar cualquiera de los miembros de la clase, debemos hacer la referencia respectiva. Por defecto, el membership provider está diseñado para trabajar directamente con SQL Server, de ahí que su nombre completo seria SQL Membership Provider. Sin embargo, debido a su gran flexibilidad podemos extenderlo a cualquier base de datos o bien modificarlo para adapatarlo a nuestras necesidades. • Winamp question: I want to search through my songs by which playlists they're sorted into

  I'm trying to think of a way to do this. I sort my songs into a variety of playlists corresponding to different 'moods' I might have, but some songs fit for more than one kind of mood (e.g. a techno song might be 'stylish' and 'surreal', or something to that effect). I also give them different star ratings for a general sort of opinion about them. I want to be able to filter my media library by moods I want or don't want, as well as by star rating. Anyone have a good way to do something like this? Alternatively, is there a way to 'tag' my songs by mood and then search up by those tags? because then I could just dump the queried results into playlists as needed. Thanks in advance.

  I have been googeling for days! I have a cert from rapidssl. I read up that the problem with num=20, is that indicates it doesn't know the issuer, or doesn't know the ROOT Cert, right? I run this command: openssl s_client -showcerts -connect smtp.server.com:465 I get this error: verify error:num=19:self signed certificate in certificate chain Here is what i have in my postfix main.cf, and what i have done: smtpd_tls_key_file = /etc/postfix/ssl/smtp.server.com.rsa.key (this is the private key) smtpd_tls_cert_file = /etc/postfix/ssl/smtp.server.com.PUBLIC.key (this is the public key given to me by rapidssl) smtpd_tls_CAfile = /etc/postfix/ssl/combo.csr.key This key has both the intermediate keys ON TOP, and the ROOT KEY on the bottom. • Java Applet or Unity3D for Cross-Platform 3D Surveying App

  Do you think a Java Applet or Unity3D Application is the best option to make a cross-browser 3d web-app? I intend to make a web application that displays 3d environments that can be navigated by dragging(with a finger or mouse depending on the platform). The web app will render 3d environments of development sites including contours, water pipeline locations, buildings etc. The application must work on Windows Desktop, Android, iOS and Windows Phone. So this is why I am tending towards a web-app as opposed to cross-platform smart phone library(like Mosync or Marmalade). The 3d environments will be navigable(by dragging around) and contain simple(not detailed) 3d objects like buildings, mountains, pipelines, etc. One thing I know is that WebGL is out because it doesn't work on IE and has limited support on Smart Phones(am I correct to completely disregard WebGL?). Will future Smart Phone browsers continue to support Java Applets? Also is it really true I can write ONE Application/Game in Unity3D and simply compile it to run on Windows Windows, Mac, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, iPad, iPhone and Android? Would you suggest the Unity3D application path or the Unity3D Web Player path? Concerning Unity3D, there's one thing I am unsure about: do all Unity3D features work on iOS and Android?

• Rhythmbox - put a playlist on my iPod

  I have an old iPod nano and currently use iTunes in Windows to management. However, I'm trying to switch to Ubuntu. So far, iPod management is one major holdup. Besides being unable to easily manage podcasts, I also don't see a way to create a playlist and put it on my iPod. I can create a playlist on the computer in Rhythmbox, but I can't drag and drop it onto the iPod. I can create a playlist on the iPod itself, put I can't drag and drop songs from my library into it. If I right-click the songs, I can add them to playlists on the computer, but not on the iPod. How can I create a playlist of music in Rhythmbox and sync it to my iPod?

• Mixing Forms and Token Authentication in a single ASP.NET Application

  I recently had the task to find out how to mix ASP.NET Forms Authentication with WIF’s WS-Federation. The FormsAuth app did already exist, and a new sub-directory of this application should use ADFS for authentication. Minimum changes to the existing application code would be a plus ;) Since the application is using ASP.NET MVC this was quite easy to accomplish – WebForms would be a little harder, but still doable. I will discuss the MVC solution here. To solve this problem, I made the following changes to the standard MVC internet application template: Added WIF’s WSFederationAuthenticationModule and SessionAuthenticationModule to the modules section. Add a WIF configuration section to configure the trust with ADFS. Added a new authorization attribute. This attribute will go on controller that demand ADFS (or STS in general) authentication. The attribute logic is quite simple – it checks for authenticated users – and additionally that the authentication type is set to Federation.   SOA stands for Service Oriented Architecture and has only really come together as a concrete approach in the last 15 years or so, although the concepts involved have been around for longer. Oracle SOA Suite is based around the Service Component Architecture (SCA) devised by the Open SOA collaboration of companies including Oracle and IBM. SCA, as used in SOA suite, is designed as a way to crystallise the concepts of SOA into a standard which ensures that SOA principles like the separation of application and business logic are maintained. Orchestration or Integration? A common thing to see with many people who are beginning to either build a new SOA based infrastructure, or move an old system to be service oriented, is confusion in the purpose of SOA technologies like BPEL and enterprise service buses. For a lot of problems, orchestration tools like BPEL or integration tools like an ESB will both do the job and achieve the right objectives; however it’s important to remember that, although a hammer can be used to drive a screw into wood, that doesn’t mean it’s the best way to do it. Service Integration is the act of connecting components together at a low level, which usually results in a single external endpoint for you to expose to your customers or other teams within your organisation – a simple product ordering system, for example, might integrate a stock checking service and a payment processing service. Process Orchestration, however, is generally a higher level approach whereby the (often externally exposed) service endpoints are brought together to track an end-to-end business process. This might include the earlier example of a product ordering service and couple it with a business rules service and human task to handle edge-cases. A good (but not exhaustive) rule-of-thumb is that integrations performed by an ESB will usually be real-time, whereas process orchestration in a SOA composite might comprise processes which take a certain amount of time to complete, or have to wait pending manual intervention. BPEL vs BPMN For some, with pre-existing SOA or business process projects, this decision is effectively already made. For those embarking on new projects it’s certainly an important consideration for those using Oracle SOA software since, due to the components included in SOA Suite and BPM Suite, the choice of which to buy is determined by what they offer. Oracle SOA suite has no BPMN engine, whereas BPM suite has both a BPMN and a BPEL engine. SOA suite has the ESB component “Mediator”, whereas BPM suite has none. Decisions must be made, therefore, on whether just one or both process modelling languages are to be used. The wrong decision could be costly further down the line.
