• Problem with ranking of search results in SharePoint 2007 if using the CONTAINS predicate

  While writing a front-end for the SharePoint Search web service for work, I did some quick testing with the MOSS Search Tool to make sure things were working right under the hood. What I found was that queries composed only of CONTAINS predicates (FREETEXT ones were fine) would have a rank of 1000 for any results that were returned. According to the documentation (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms544086.aspx): "If the query returns a document because a non–full-text predicate evaluates to TRUE for that document, the rank value is calculated as 1000." Given that the behaviour I am seeing seems to contradict the documentation, is it the case that all queries that use only the CONTAINS predicate will produce ranking like this?

I am using web services for that. the problem is that while working with my app sometimes i get some exceptions. like, Exception of type 'Microsoft.SharePoint.SoapServer.SoapServerException' was thrown. • How to OCR a specific region of a MODI.Document?

  I need to OCR a specific region of a scanned document and I am using MODI (Microsoft's Document Imaging COM object). My code currently OCR's the entire page (quite accurately!), but I would like to target a specific region of the page where the text is always static (order number). How can I do this?   Hi, I have a theoretical question about the .net framework. As I see it Microsoft gave us bunch of technologies for different layers. We have the ADO.NET and with the more improved Entity Framework for Data Access. And ASP.NET for WEB UI. And even WCF for Facade and SOA. But what in the middle, what do we have for the Business Layer? Is it just Referenced DLLs? How do we deal with the Application Pulling this days? I remember using COM+ 10 yeas ago because the IIS couldn't handle the pressure. Is Spring.Net is the best option available for injection? Thanks, Ronny

  At work we currently have a custom in-house built winforms app for the business users to view reports. It has role-based security and several administrator functions. My boss is thinking about getting me to port this app to webforms. My question is, are there options other than custom built winforms and webforms apps for deploying/viewing/administrating Crystal Reports at an enterprise level (role-based security, easy report deployment, etc)? I'm thinking about third-party packages or perhaps applications provided by Microsoft/Business Objects/SAP? We are using Crystal Reports 11.5.

• Are there C# controls that can be used to create a hierarchical list of prioritised items?

  I need to be able to display and edit a hierarchical list of tasks in a C# app. It can either be a Windows form app, or ASP.NET. Basically, I want similar behaviour to the way Microsoft Project handles tasks. The control would need to: 1) Maintain a list of items made up of several fields 2) Each item can have a number of children (at least 3 levels of nesting) 3) It needs to be very easy to change the parents/children of an item 4) It needs to be very easy to edit the fields (as fast as changing cells in Excel) 5) It needs to be very easy to reorder the items by dragging and dropping or cut and paste 6) If I can easily connect the control to a database, even better Before I go and create something manually, I'm wondering if there is something available already?

• OLEDB connection does not read data from excel sheet

  Hi All, i am getting a weird problem. i am using OLEDB for excel connection with connection string = Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=c:\Execute.xls;Extended Properties=Excel 8.0;"); excel file contains columns with string/integer values. the problem is that sometimes connection read values from sheet absolutly fine but sometimes it missed out some data values and shows them as System.DBNull. the behavior is very inconsistent. please help.

  Hello all. Here at work I have Visual Studio 2005 and Office 2007 installed. I'm trying to install the VSTO package to create a templated Word Document project. I installed the VSTO package via this link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=8315654b-a5ae-4108-b7fc-186402563f2b#filelist Whenever I create a new Word Template Office Project I receive an error message informing me that Office 2003 is not installed. • Problem setting up Direct X for C++

  Hi, I have an ASP.Net site, in which I am using a ListView with a Datapager. Apparently there is a bug with the Datapager, where it crashes if there is an empty ampersand (&) in the querystring. I found several sources on Microsoft's website that say I can use the CREATE USER command to do this. • How do you write a consistent UI Automation for MS? MSAA & UI Automation don't seem to overlap.

  Working on a general Automation tool, considering moving from Win32 Message hooks to .net UI Automation, however the feature set of UI Automation doesn't cover all we have in Win32 and still doesn't seem to support all the GUI on Windows. One such example is Windows Live Messenger. Windows Live messenger 2009 is still using the older DirectUIHwnd to draw the gui. This means that you can't use windows messages to send to the controls, because the controls don't have their own HWND. It also seems to defeat the new .net UI Automation framework though the documentation seems to make out as if it can be joined in the UI Automation and Microsoft Active Accessibility document. Looking at MS Accessibility pointed to Active Accessibility 2.0 SDK Tools which showed that MSAA can interact with the contents. Is there some trick to getting the older MSAA technology that UI Automation seems to be trying to replace to actually work with UI Automation? I'd rather not have multiple solutions trying to automate the same windows for windows unlike Windows Live Messenger where each of these techniques is valid and will work.

• EF4 - What's all the hype over objectsets?

  I am an intermediate user of EF in .net 3.5 and have recently moved to working with .net 4. One think i keep coming across when reading various tutorials is the use of ObjectSets instead of ObjectQuerys and that they are a great new feature. What is so great about them?   Hai, I wrote the coding for add / remove the default documents of IIS7 in vb.net 2.0 windows application using Microsoft.Web.Administration.dll. The coding is working fine. After adding a new document, the messagebox showing that newly added document name. Simillarly if I remove any document, the messagebox not showing that document name. So that I am saying, the coding is working fine. Now the problem is, I can't see the newly added document name in II7 Manager GUI. The next proplem is, my website not access that newly added document. Please can any body suggest for these problems. What the mistake I did the vb.net 2.0 windows application coding and what are the modifications I need to do? Thanks in advance.

It's all fairly standard stuff (including basic authentication) but there seem to be several ways to achieve this using Microsoft technologies and I don't really know where to start. Which of these is the easiest and most "up-to-date" solution to creating a web service?

• Is there an IDE that provides code completion for Python

  I am quite fond of the Intellisense code completion baked into Microsoft Visual Studio. I find that I only type 2 to 4 characters of any given keyword which drasticaly speeds up my coding. Now that I have been spending time writing some Python code I find myself reaching for ctrl+space. Are there any IDEs that support code completion in Python? I do my python development on a Mac so an OS x tool would be preferable. It seems like the doc string property of Python methods is a perfect match for inline API discovery.

  Hi, we are currently investigating a migration of an application that doesn't meet company standards. The application is built using VB6 and Shape SQL/Access. The application has about 120 reports by storing Shape SQL strings in a database which the user can modify using a wizard. Shape sql is not allowed at this company. We have investigated plain SQL, Linq, Entity Framework as alternatives... but all result in more complex solutions. Does anyone have another suggestion?   So I wrote a project-management program for a small business using Microsoft Access 2007. Now they've requested lots of additional features (timekeeping, privileged data tiers ...) I personally use Linux, but the whole office uses Windows. I'm relatively new to programming but like to teach myself using projects like this. I'm right on the edge on this -- I can't really tell what the path of least resistance here is: do I stay in access + VBA and teach myself a dying, annoying language -- while struggling against all the limitations of Access? Or do I move to something else? Python seems simple enough ... Whatever I use, i need to be able to offer a GUI.

• What are the typical reasons Javascript developed on Firefox fails on IE?

  I developed some javascript enhanced pages that run fine on recent Firefox and Safari. I missed to check in Internet Explorer, and now I find the pages don't work on IE 6 and 7 (so far). The scripts are somehow not executed, the pages show as if javascript wasn't there, although some javascript is executed. I am using own libraries with dom manipulation, from YUI 2 I use YUI-Loader and the XML-Http-Request, and on one page I use "psupload", which depends on JQuery. I am installing Microsoft Script Editor from Office XP and will now debug. I will also write specific tests now. What are the typical failing points of IE? What direction I can keep my eyes open.   In C# I am trying to get an instance of an Excel.Application object from a Process object. This seems like it should be really simple yet I cannot figure it out and cannot find an example. To repeat, I have a System.Diagnostics.Process object that I know refers to a running Excel instance. I now need to recover a Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Application object that refers to the process so that I can go about manipulating the Excel application from C#. From what I understand after reading around a bit I should just need to mark the page as uncacheable but I can't get any browsers to refresh the page. Concerns: * My goal is to pull up to 100 items at a time and send them as a batch to the next step. * If I use a ConcurrentQueue, I have to manually cause it to go asleep when there is no work to be done.   Hi, I have an access to corporate VPN using Cisco VPN Client 5.0.00:0340, but when I'm connected to it, I don't have an Internet access. I'm using Windows XP SP3. As it was suggested here http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?t=209167 , I tried to enable "Allow local LAN Access" but it doesn't work. I also tried a second solution - deleting entry using "route" command, but it didn't help. I used "route delete 192.168.100.222". It's a third day of my attempts to solve this issue and I don't have an idea what else to do. I'm not very experienced in VPN stuff, but I know something about networking. Basing on my knowledge, I think that it's theoretically possible to achieve Internet access using my local network and only corporate stuff to be routed using VPN connection. I think that theoretically this should look like this: every IP being inside by corporation - VPN interface IP every other IP - my ethernet interface I've tried many possibilities of how to change those routes, but neither of them work. I'd really appreciate any help. • Accessing HttpRequest from Global.asax via a page

  I'm trying to get a property (ImpersonatePersonId) from a page in global.asax but get a HttpException saying 'Request is not available in this context'. I've been searching for some documentation on where in the pipeline the request is accessible, but as far as I can see all Microsoft can produce of documentation is one-liners like "PostRequestHandlerExecute: Occurs when the ASP.NET event handler finishes execution." which really doesn't give me much... I've tried placing the call in both Pre and PostRequestHandlerExceute but with the same result. I wonder if anyone with experience in this would be so kind as to tell me where the Request object is available. My code from global asax is below.
