These errors are quite new, so I feel that their settings (dma, write-cache, ...) have been modified by some upgrades. I've already used hdparm to set write-cache off on the HDDs. But it seems like I need to review some other setting(s) too. With oldest distro it was easy to know about the hardware settings, but now on Quantal/Precise its deeply hidden for the average user. So i would like to know how to view/modify these settings. • Good Laptop .NET Developer VM Setup

  I was torn between putting this question on this site or SuperUsers. I've tried to do a good bit of searching on this, and while I find plenty of info on why to go with a VM or not, there isn't much practical advise on HOW to best set things up. Here's what I currently HAVE: HP EliteBook 1540, quad-core, 8GB memory, 500GB 7200 RPM HD, eSATA port. Descent machine. Should work just fine. Windows 7 64-bit Host OS. This also acts as my day-to-day basic stuff (email, Word Docs, etc...) OS. VMWare Desktop Windows 7 64-bit Guest OS with all my .NET dev tools, frameworks, etc loaded on it. It's configured to use 2 cores and up to 6GB of memory. I figure that the dev env will need more than email, word, etc... So, this seemed like a good option to me, but I find with the VM running, things tend to slow down all around on both the host and guest OS. Memory and CPU utilization don't seem to be an issue, but I/O does. I tried running the VM on an external eSATA drive, figuring that the extra channel might pick up the slack. Things only got worse (could be my eSATA enclosure). So, for all of that I have basically two questions in one. Has anyone used this sort of setup and are there any gotchas either around the VMWare configuration or anything else I may have missed here that you can point me to? Is there another option that might work better? For example, I've considered trying a lighter weight Host OS and run both of my environments as VMs? I tried this with Server 2008 Hyper-V, but I lose too much laptop functionality going this route, so I never completed setup. I'm not averse to Linux as a host OS, though I'm no Linux expert. If I'm missing any critical info, feel free to ask. Thanks in advance for your help. Steve

• Dock with dual external DVI monitors with Intel + Nvidia Optimus?

  I have a Dell Latitude E6420 laptop plugged into a docking station, and the dock has 2 monitors (connected with DVI). Also note that I've installed Ubuntu alongside (dual-boot) Windows 7. I can't get the dual monitors to work both on Ubuntu (either 11.10 or 12.04) and Windows 7. When I run lspci | grep VGA, I get: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GF108 [Quadro NVS 4200M] (rev a1) If I then reboot and uncheck Optimus setting in the BIOS during reboot, I'm able to get the dual monitors to work in Ubuntu 12.04 (but I need to configure them every boot in Nvidia Settings). When I run lspci | grep VGA, I get: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF119 [Quadro NVS 4200M] (rev a1) But then if I reboot into Windows (leaving the Optimus unchecked), Windows can't detect external monitors, and the resolution is unacceptably low. I've seen on many forum posts that this particular graphics card setup causes lots of headaches. I haven't been able to resolve my problem yet. How can I use my external display on my laptop with intel and nvidia video cards? How to use external displays with Intel driver on a NVidia/Intel hybrid system nVidia Optimus , Unity 3D and Dual Monitors "Just use VGA instead of DVI" isn't an option because my dock has only 1 VGA port (and 2 DVI). Switching the BIOS setting on every reboot and then reconfiguring the display settings every time is tedious, time-consuming, and impractical. Do you know how to make this work smoothly? • Setup for mounting kerberized nfs home directory - gssd not finding valid kerberos ticket

  Our home directories are exported via kerberized nfs, so the user needs a valid kerberos ticket to be able to mount its home. This setup works fine with our existing clients & server. Now we want to add some 11.10 client and thus set up ldap & kerberos together with pam_mount. The ldap authentication works and users can login via ssh, however their homes can not be mounted. When pam_mount is configured to mount as root, gssd does not find a valid kerberos ticket and the mount fails. • External monitor is blank if I boot with the monitor plugged in

  Ubuntu 12.04 has problem with Intel GM45 Chipset, featuring the the Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD I have a COMPAQ Presario CQ70 laptop with an Intel GM45 chipset that features the Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD. I was using the second HDMI video port to drive both a projector or a second monitor. Everything was working fine under Ubuntu 8.04, 9.04, 10.04 and 11.04, however, when I upgraded to 12.04 the second monitor stopped working. What I mean when I say stopped working is: boot with monitor plugged in. Blank screen! Power off, unplug monitor and power on everything works. Plug in monitor (only mode that works in Mirror mode) two monitors that look same. Close laptop lid. screen goes blank only option for useful system is power off and unplug monitor. If I attempt to Adjust the monitor to maximum resolution that the monitor will handle and turn off mirror mode nothing can be moved onto that screen. This all worked fine with earlier versions of Ubuntu, is there a notes about the changes to the graphics management system in 12.04, like there is for the resolver change?

• Using Apache2 to set up a basic webpage

  I am having a problem with a test page I set up for my website. The config file (index.html) looks like this <html> <head> <title>Welcome to website.net!</title> </head> <body> <h1>Success! The website.net virtual host is working!</h1> </body> </html> Which should display a page like this in my browser when I navigate to www.mywebsite.net Welcome to website.net! Success! The website.net virtual host is working! However I get a 403 "forbidden" error when I navigate to the page. What am I missing? I have the directory installed on /var/www/mywebsite.net/public_html/index.html I have the permissions of the /var/www directory set to 755 so that others can read and exicute it but it does not seem to be working. I also have port 80 open on my iptable. The server is a VPS server if that makes a difference however I have added a DNS record for the ip address. Any help is appreciated! • Porting Ruby/NCruses Rogue-Like to .NET and FlatRedBall

  I created an awesome rogue-like game in Ruby. For the GUI, I used NCurses. Since I'm using FlatRedBall as my engine of choice for Silverlight game development, I want to port this game over. What is the best way to efficiently doing this, and what are the pitfalls I should expect? For example, Ruby is object-oriented, like C#, and I should be able to just convert (rewrite) classes one by one. However, I will run into issues like: NCurses API. I need to possibly create my own notions of a "Window", or else rewrite GUI code. It's one class, but it's BIG. Mix-Ins. These are essentially aspect-oriented development. There are a couple of solutions in .NET, like dynamic classes. What else? Also, I should mention that I want to create a C# application out of this. As much as possible, I'll dump reusable and helper code, algorithms, etc. into separate projects and generate reusable DLLs.

  This is a followup post to the previous summary on the "What's new with Solaris 11 since the launch" webcast. That webcast has had a chatroom for a live Questions and Answers session running. I went through the archive of those and compiled a list of some of the (IMHO) most relevant and most frequently asked questions, I'd like to share. This is the first part, covering the QnA of Session I and II of the webcast, in a followup post we can have a look of the rest of the sessions if required - let me know in the comments. Also, should you have questions, as usual, feel free to ask those there, too.  ...and here come the answered questions:  When will Exadata be based on Solaris in place of Oracle Enterprise Linux?Exadata offers both Solaris 11 or Oracle Enterprise Linux.  The choice can be made at deployment time based on your OS needs.What are all other benefits and futures avilable in solaris 11 (cloud O.S.) compared to cloud based Red Hat Linux and Windows?suggest you check out our cloud white paper for a view of this. Will Exadata be based on Sparc in place of intel-amd x86 in next future ?We can't publically discuss futures, but we actually have a SPARC version of Exadata today, it's called SuperCluster, this is such a powerfull multipurpose system that it actually have multiple personalities built into one system: Exadata, Exalogic, and it can be a general purpose platform if you want. Have I understood this right? Livepatching KSplice-style is coming to Solaris 11 too?We're looking at that for certain types of Solaris patches in the future.Will there be a security framework like SST/JASS for Solaris 11?We can't talk about the future projects on a public forum, but we recognize the need for SST/JASS and want to address this as soon as possible. On the other side there are a whole bunch of "best practices" that are now embedded into Solaris 11 by default, so out of the box Solaris 11 should already address part of what SST/JASS gave you. (For example we did a lot of work on improving the auditing performance so that we can now have it turned on by default). On x86 can install VirtualBox in a Zone and use that to host other OSes.Yes, this was one of the first things we made sure would work when we acquired VirtualBox when we were still Sun Microsystems. If I have a Solaris 11 Control Domain on a T-series, can I run a Solaris 10 Ldom with Solaris 8 branded containers?Yes, you can.Is Oracle Solaris free or do we need to purchase?Solaris is free, the entitlement to run it comes either with a Sun system (new or historical) or for 3rd party systems the entitlement comes with a support contract. Note that for production use you will be expected to get a support contract. If you don't want to use the Solaris system (Sun or 3rd party) for production use (i.e. development) you can get an OTN license on the Oracle Technical Network website. Will encryption and deduplication both work on a share?This should work at the same time. What approaches does Solaris use to monitor usage?There are many different tools in Solaris to monitor usage. The main ones are the "stats" (vmstat, mpstat, prstat, ...), the kstat interface, and DTrace (to get details you couldn't see before). And then there are layered tools that can interface with these tools (Ops Center, BMC, CA, Tivoli, ...) Apart little-endian, big-endian how is it easy to port Solaris applications on Sparc to x86 and vice-versa ?Very easy. Except for certain hardware specific applications (those that utilize hardware specific drivers), all of the same Oracle Solaris APIs exist for all architectures. Is IPS based patching aware of the fact that zones can reside on ZFS and move from one physical server to another ?IPS is definitely aware of zones and uses ZFS to support boot environments for non-global zones in the same way that's used for the global zone. With respect to moving a zone from one physical server to another, Solaris 11 supports to the same zone attach/deattach method that was introduced in Solaris 10. Is vnic support in Ldoms planned?This is currently being investigated for a future LDOM release. Is it possible with the new patching system to build a system later with the same patch level as a system built a few months earlier?Yes, you can choose/define exactly which version should go to the system and it will always put the same bits in place. The technical answer is that you choose the version of the "entire" package you want on the system and the rest flows from there. Is it in the plans to allow zones to add/remove zpools to running zones dynamically in future updates?Work in this area is currently under investigation. Any plans to realese Solaris 11 source code? i.e. opensolaris?We currently can't comment on publicly releasing the source code. If you need/want this access please let your Oracle account team know. What about VirtualBox and Solaris11 for virtualization?Solaris 11 works great with VirtualBox, as both a client and a host system. Will Oracle DB software eventually be supplied as IPS packages? When?We don't have a date yet but this is actively being worked on. What are the new artifacts in Oracle Solaris 11 than the previous versions?There are quite a few actually. For example, IPS works with ZFS and Solaris Boot Environments to provide a safe environment for software lifecycle management so that changes can be reverted by switching to an older boot environment. With Zones on solaris 11, can I do paravirtualitation?The great thing about zones is you don't *need* paravirtualization. You're making the same direct kernel calls that you would outside of a zone.  It's an incredibly significant performance win over hypervisor-based virtualization. Are zones/containers officially supported to run Oracle Databases?  EBIZ?Hi Calvin, the answer is yes, here is the support matrix for DB:  http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/virtualizationmatrix-172995.html I've found some nasty bugs in Solaris 11 (one of which today) that have been fixed in community forks (i.e., Illumos). Will Oracle ever restart collaboration with the community?We continue to work with the community, just not as open on all projects as we did before (For example IPS is an open project) and the source of more than half of the Solaris packages is posted on our opensource websites. I can't comment on what we will do in the future. And with regards to bugs please file them through the support organization and we will get them resolved. Is zpool vdev removal on-the fly now possible ?This issue is actively being investigated although we don't have a date for when this feature will be available. They use Solaris Cluster to do this. What about VMware vMotion like feature?We have secure live migration with both Logical Domains on SPARC T series systems, and with Oracle VM on x86 systems. When running Solaris 10/11 on an enterprise server with a lot of zones, what are best practises commands to show the system is running fine? (has enough hardware resources). For example CPU / Memory / I/O / system load. What are the recommended values?For Solaris 11, look into the new zonestat(1M) command that provides a great deal of information about zone utilization. In addition, there is new work underway in providing additional observability in areas such as per-zone file system I/O. Java optimizations done with Solaris 11? For X86 platforms too? • apt-get does not work with proxy

  For a command sudo apt-get update I get following error W: Failed to fetch http://ch.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/maverick-updates/multiverse/binary-i386/Packages.gz 407 Proxy Authentication Required ( The ISA Server requires authorization to fulfill the request. Access to the Web Proxy filter is denied. ) I am running Ubuntu 10.10 installed on Windows XP using VirtualBox. For internet connections I am using proxy server with an authentication. I tried to use gnome-network-proxy tool to set proxy settings system-wide. After that /etc/environment has been updated by http_proxy variable with the format http://my_proxy:port/, there were no authentication data. I checked this with firefox. Browser asked my for login and password and everything was working fine. It was unfortunately not the case for apt-get. I have also tried to do as described here. Unfortunately it does not work. May it be somehow related to the fact that a proxy is in a Windows domain, any ideas ? EDIT: My proxy name is http-proxy. Is '-' a special character here ?

My first thought is to do it in XML, designed something like the following. • Ubuntu...I love you, I hate you

   I have been working on seeing if a .NET 3.5 application will port over to Linux, Ubuntu to be specific. I started with version 9.01, then 9.10 and now 10.04 as I find more and more that I need from Mono. I have a dual boot on a dev box, Windows 7 and Ubuntu. An upgrade from Ubuntu 9.01 to 9.10 caused my mouse and keyboard to lock up. I was able to boot from a 9.10 cd. Then, I upgraded to 10.04 as I needed Mono 2,2. Upgrade worked, lost my windows boot though. it seems grub somehow jumped in and messed up the windows boot. After Googlign liek crazy and trying this and that, these 2 links finally got me my windows boot back:http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/bootinfoscript/index.php?title=Boot_Problems:Boot_Sector http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392So, I am now thinking about trying SuSe instead as I hear\read it's more stable. • Story of success: MySQL Enterprise Backup (MEB) was successfully integrated with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) via System Backup to Tape (SBT) interface.

  Since version 3.6 MEB supports backups to tape through the SBT interface.The officially supported tool for such backups to tape is Oracle Secure Backup (OSB).But there are a lot of other Storage Managers. MEB allows to use them through the SBT interface. Since version 3.7 it also has option --sbt-environment which allows to pass environment variables, not needed by OSB, to third-party managers. At the same time MEB can not guarantee it would work with all of them.This month we were contacted by a customer who wanted to use IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) with MEB. We could only say them same thing I wrote in previous paragraph: this solution is supposed to work, but you have to be pioneers of this technology. And they agreed. They agreed to be the pioneers and so the story begins.MEB requires following options to be specified by those who want to connect it to SBT interface:--sbt-database-name: a name which should be handed over to SBT interface. This can be any name. Default, MySQL, works for most cases, so user is not required to specify this option.--sbt-lib-path: path to SBT library. For TSM this library comes with "Data Protection for Oracle", which, in its turn, interfaces with Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN), which uses SBT interface. So you need to install it even if you don't use Oracle.--sbt-environment: environment for third-party manager. This option is not needed when you use OSB, but almost always necessary for third-party SBT managers.   It may seem obvious but it’s worth stating again. The idea that mobile users are going to read lots of user assistance on their devices is just wrong. So, Jakob Nielsen’s post Mobile Content Is Twice as Difficult serves as a timely reminder for anyone thinking of putting manuals as a form of user assistance onto mobile phones. There is also an excellent post on UXMag.com, explaining that one of the ways to screw up with your iPhone app is to throw an old-style user manual into the user experience: 10 Surefire Ways to Screw Up Your iPhone App.   (Image copyright and referenced from UX Magazine 2010)   Instead, user assistance  alternatives—if any at all—include one-time tours, graphics, in-context instructions, and so on. Not so sure that importing “humor” and “personality” work so well in the enterprise app space, myself. However, the message is clear: iPhone users don’t read manuals. Great message. Users will figure it out, and if they can’t, well then your app’s UX is a problem and the app will fail. Shame some teams are obsessed with figuring out ways to port existing manuals to mobile platforms without any thought for the UX. Razorfish’s Scatter/Gather blog says it all: One thing that is particularly discouraging, most material currently available on “Creating Content for the iPad” or similar themes turns out to be about getting traditional content onto, or into, the iPad. Now, manuals for non-end users in PDF format on eReaders is a different matter. I have research on that, but it’s for another post.   I've installed nvidia-current using the Additional Drivers application in Ubuntu 12.04. I need those drivers so I can use accelerated WebGL. After installing the drivers, and rebooting X fails to start and I have a frozen system/dark screen. Below is the content of Xorg.0.log How can I fix this problem? • How do I change the Creation/Mod Date of all folders on a USB drive using Touch command?

  I've got a USB drive with mp3 music on it that I play in my car. My car has a USB drive port. Problem is that the car sorts the music by Creation/Modification Date (and not alphabetically). This makes it a pain to find what artist I'm looking for. To solve this problem, I need a way to "update" the Creation/Modification Date for all folders on the USB drive every time I add a new folder of music to the USB drive. Anyone know how I can do this? The Touch command works great, but the format touch <filename> would take forever to do on each folder on the drive. Anyway to select all folders on the drive and then touch <all folders>? On my USB drive I have a folder for each album and the songs within each respective folder, like so: Album-1-folder Album-2-folder I need to apply the Touch command to each of the "album" folders on the drive.
