• Lesser known Ubuntu desktop applications

  So, this Ubuntu software center comes with 100s of applications of all types. In this version they have disabled rating, making it hard to find how good it is. I found gnome-shell today, that seemed awesome. There are other ones, less well known, For eg, Abiword is far better than Open Office Org Word processor in many ways. (Altho' I dont like word processors themselves.) What are the other less well known applications that you use and like. One application per answer.

• Where does linux look for shared libs?

  I am trying to get the ar command on an embedded ARM computer running linux. I want to install debian and openjdk. It is a headless system. This is a custom linux distribution provided by the hardware manufacturer. The debian installer is missing the ar command so i tried copying the binaries from the debian package, but when running ar I get error while loading shared libraries: libbfd-2.18.0-multiarch.20080103.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory libbfd is also in the package. I tried linking it to /lib and /usr/lib but I get the same message when running. What is the best way to get debian and ar on a custom linux distro?

  I have a large ZFS pool of 4 combined drives. Now, the filesystem can not be mounted: pool: tank state: UNAVAIL status: One or more devices could not be opened.   If I open an instance of Windows Explorer, a button appears on the taskbar; its icon matches the icon of current location in Explorer. E.g. If I've clicked on a drive (e.g. C:) then the taskbar icon changes to the drive icon. If I select the Pictures Library location, the taskbar icon changes to a little picture symbol. How can I stop this behaviour, so that the taskbar icon always shows the same icon, regardless of where I've clicked in Explorer?

• Slideshow screensaver in Win-7 vs. XP

  Since I skipped Vista, this may be an old question, I don't know. In XP, the built-in SlideShow (Photos) screensaver would randomly rotate among images not just in the directory specified in the settings, but also in any sub-directories (and on down) of that directory. When I use the Photos screensaver in Win-7, it seems to use only images in the directory I specify, ignoring the rest of the tree below that. Is there a way to get the XP behavior? Alternatively, is there some other public domain/open source Screen Saver with that or similar behavior that I can install?

  I'm looking for any (Windows) software that allows me to draw custom street maps. I'm not looking for something that displays existing maps from real places, but something that allows me to define my own map. Obviously this can be achieved through any graphics program however I am wondering if there's a software which makes it almost drag-drop easy to create your own maps of visual quality to that of Open Street Maps, Google Maps, street directories etc. Preferably an offline desktop app with attention on design rather than complex geospacial specifics. Context: I want to make a detailed street map for a game I'm making.

  What free (or better, open source) applications do you know of to keep outlook and Gmail contacts in sync? I need my outlook and Gmail accounts to be in sync, since my phone can only connect to Gmail... I've tried GO Contact Sync, but it won't preserve categories, and I also tried Gcontactsynchbut it seems outdated. Google Apps Sync is only for paying users, and Chapura too. • What are the specifications on the RAM inside my computer?

  I have a Dell Dimension 9200 that I bought 4 years ago. I want to find out the exact specifications (manufacturer, speed, timings, etc.). Is there a way to get this specific info without having to open up the PC (it's buried in and under a bunch of furniture, I'd perfer not to have to dig it out). All I know about it right now is that it is 4 1GB sticks of DDR2 RAM at 667 Mhz. It is the standard RAM that shipped with the computer 4 years ago (from Dell). Does anyone know what the specifications are of the RAM that Dell used in this particular model of computer 4 years ago? Note: I've done my research before coming here. CPU-Z, EVEREST, and AIDA32 all have been unable to give me any more information other than 4 x 1GB @ 667Mhz. I can't find any specifications in the Dell online manuals either (at least not as specific as I want). Thanks -Faken

• Restore "lost" user after Active Directory removal?

  Is it possible to restore lost users after Active Directory unistallation ? (I forgot to switch users to local users) The computer run Windows Server 2008 R2 Entreprise, and all the registry linked to the user i want to restore seems to still be there, user's folder is still on the harddrive, and useraccount2 still show the user (But flagged as unknown user) Some folders still have rigts set to this lost user, and even the local default Admin account cannot open/delete the folder. (But the real problem here is to find how to recover users account, the folder can be deleted an other way) All users i want te restore was originaly local users, converted to domain users after Active Directory installation. I think that if i can change user's sid (choosing the sid manually) i'll be able to easily recover rights on folders Regards

• Browsing not working in Windows 8

  I'm using Windows 8 Professional installed on Windows 7 using the "Save my preferences and apps" installation option. The Windows works great, apps are downloading and I can listen to online radio stations using the TuneIn radio app meaning the internet connection is alive, however, when I open a browser (either Chrome or IE10) and try to browse the internet, I'm getting an "Unable to resolve DNS" error message. Prior to installing the internet browsing worked flawlessly I must say. I'm using ESET NOD32 Antivirus so I suspect that it might interfere with the web connection now, but I'm not so sure. Internet options show that the PC is set to resolve the DNS automatically. I don't know what to do. My other Win7 PCs in my wifi home network are connecting to the internet without any issues. If anyone can help me resolve this I'll be grateful :) Thanks

• How to stop basic Postfix after-queue script from BCC-ing sender?

  I'm building a content filter for Postfix (2.9.3 package installed via apt on an Ubuntu 12.04 test VM) and I'm starting with a very basic Ruby (1.9.3) template and building up functionality. Strangely, when the script is enabled, messages sent are being forwarded on as normal, but also sent back to the sender which is not normal. Disabling the script disables this behavior. Any suggestions about what I have to change to stop that from happening? • Tab Completion In Emacs shell-mode SSH Sessions

  My current use pattern of emacs results in my having several shell-mode buffers open, each running an ssh session. I am running into an issue with this, though - when I try to tab-complete file names and other things in my remote session, the shell attempts to use completions available on the local machine instead of on the remote machine. For example, if the file ~/foobar exists on the local machine and ~/frob exists on the remote machine, typing in ~/f and pressing tab results in ~/foobar instead of completing correctly. If I use ssh outside of emacs and try the same thing, I get the correct completion of ~/frob instead. How can I get tab-completion to complete the way it does in normal ssh sessions ?

• Macvim lags while Vim on terminal is buttery smooth

  I am running OS X Lion 10.7.3 and Macvim runs significantly slower than vim on the terminal for me. All movement commands in Macvim are much slower. Moving up and down in visual mode is equally as laggy. I see none of this lag when using vim from the terminal. Does anyone know what the reasons may be? I am running NERDtree on every open tab, and I know this contributes some memory overhead and potentially some slow down; but even when I don't run NERDtree Macvim runs much slower than vim from the terminal. Any help in solving this would be greatly appreciated.

  Hi all, when I try to copy any file with scp on Mac OS X Snow Leopard from another machine I get this error: scp [email protected]:/home/me/file.zip . Password: ... ---> Couldn't open /dev/null: Permission denied this is the output of "ls -l /dev/null": crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 3, 2 May 14 14:10 /dev/null I am in the group wheel, and even if I do "sudo scp..." it doesn't work. Is it written the on hard disk as temporary files (where exactly is it, appdata or where)? Does that mean the next user of the pc could gain access just clicking that from the system tray and saving to other folders? How about when the system crash and that portable app is not closed the normal way? On the next open, will it stay somewhere on temporary folders?

  I'll tell you in advance that I'm newbie in the topic. I have a Win8 (Home) machine with Hyper-V installed behind a router. The router has a public IP and a domain attached. I have another Win8 (Work) machine also installed Hyper-V. I want to access to my home Hyper-V via Hyper-V Manager so I can manage my virtual machines from work. I found this article but I don't know if it's applicable to me. I thought that a simple port forwarding should work and I only need to do is grant the Work HV manager my domain and the port I choose and if it's pop a login form I only need to fill the user data of my Home computer? How can I solve this? My thoughts revolve around: - Port forwarding - set domain+port and set my home user - Set up a VPN and use the local ip address of my home computer (it looks like a little cumbersome and my router only support PPTP) I'm open to any other solution too.   I am developing a .net web application on a local environment. I have a dev server that the application is installed on. Within the web application on the dev server I have four folders that I dont have locally and that are controlled by another application. In my day to day development I require the four folders on local PC. I would like to automate the process of pulling the folders from the dev server to my local drive, so I can keep thing in sync. Ideally something like this Run file from main folder (be it a bat file, powershell, some sort of job, open to recommendations) Download 4 folders supplied to it. First download bring everything down, from them on only pull the changes Not sure where to start with achieving this but would appreciate any help would with. I know there are apps out there that do something like this but would like to give a go writing something to do this before I resort to using one of them.

• firefox addons and their silly news tabs

  Something like 30% of the addons I have in firefox update every other week and feel the need to pop open a tab about how awesome they are and all the cool things they changed. I just don't care at all and I'm very annoyed by these news tabs. When firefox opens, I want to see my home page. I've been looking for an addon to disable or kill them before I even have to look at them. Rather like addblock-for-addons. Short of finding a plugin that disables them, I'm seeking information about common interfaces so I can try to figure it out on my own. I'm wondering if I could do it in greasemonkey somehow. For example, is there something common about the url for the tabs?

  I am trying to get google-chrome to work on Ubuntu 7.10. I installed it with --force-depends and got it to install, but now when I try to run it, I get this error: /usr/bin/google-chrome: error while loading shared libraries: libnss3.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Is there a way to still get google-chrome to load even without this dependency satisfied? This is an old system that needs to keep this old 7.10 Ubuntu version and I would like to have google-chrome if possible installed, even if it means no sound or other features that are not compatible.

• Handling UTF-8 with BOM in HTTP

  Say I have a script which at some point serves a plain text file as a content (right after "\n\n"). These files are provided by users, but I can expect they will be UTF-8. So I hard-wire Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8. But while I can teach users to save everything in UTF-8, I can't be very sure that the files will be without BOM ("\xEE\xBB\xBF"), as at least on Windows, this is not very clearly distinguished in common plain text editors and not every one of them uses the same default. So what about these files created on Windows, where they may/may not start with BOM? Should/will server or UA get rid of this debris for me? Or is it my task to prepare clean UTF-8, i.e. open each file and check whether BOM needs to be removed?

  Hello, I am using VirtualMin on Debian-50-lenny-64-LAMP (Debian Linux 5.0). I've upgraded some packages including "bind". Since the upgrade, both Apache and Bind stopped working. I've Googled about the errors but still couldn't make it work. Now I am sorry I did the update. I usually make updates to have the latest versions of the packages that are installed in the server. Any ideas?

• How do I backup my Ubuntu 9.10 system and then restore it to a new machine with different hardware?

  I have a nicely configured Ubuntu 9.10 machine, with crossover linux (from Codeweavers) installed. I have the Nvidia drivers installed. Everything is just as I want it. Now I want to move to a new machine with different hardware: different sized hard drive, different size RAM, different video card, etc. I tried the technique suggested on Ubuntu forums, "Howto: Backup and restore your system!". The results: New system complains about swap not being found New system complains about not finding Nvidia hardware, and I can't open the System-Administration-Hardware Drivers application (i.e., /usr/bin/jockey-gtk) to fix the problem. As result of nvidia, X-Windows is throwing errors, and the on screen process for fixing X-Windows isn't working. How do I restore a backup of my old system, including my Crossover Linux installation, to a new machine with different hardware installed?
