  • Why is Flash power-hungry?

    Apple historically argued that Flash was power-hungry, which made it inappropriate for use on mobile devices. I always thought that was just bluster excusing Apple's exclusion of Flash support from their mobile devices. But now I see that Adobe acknowledges that Flash is a pig. Why is it a pig? Are there bad programming approaches (that can be explained in layman's terms) that make it so power-hungry?

  • Is there a good command-line OS from which I can launch VMs?

    Generally speaking, I'm interested in something that can load quickly and, depending on what I want to do, can choose to launch a Virtual Machine that is tailored to my desired activity. So, something that loads to (preferably) a command line, then if I want to run my Windows 7 machine that has all of my programming junk on it, I can simply enter the command to launch some VM player and close it when I'm done.

Then type in a one-line request message for some object that is housed on the server: for example: telnet cis.poly.edu 80 GET /~hello/ HTTP/1.1 Host: cis.poly.edu What am I supposed to do, exactly? What program do I need? Where do I need to type this message?

  • Drag and Drop File into Application under run as administrator

    Whenever I have an application running (Visual Studio 2008, Notepad, etc.) under "Run as Administrator", I cannot drag and drop files from Windows Explorer into the application. I've tried running Windows Explorer as administrator, but to no avail. Is there a way to get drag and drop to work when my applications are under "Run as Administrator"?

    I am using Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I had earlier installed SQL server 2008 with SP1 with Visual Studio 2008 Team System with sp1.   • which collaborative tools do you use to communicate between team members

Only good option I've seen so far is joomla CMS. Just want to get an opinion of the community on which tools they have used for these purposes.     Pretty simple - how can one select just pasted text (after pasting it) ? I'm editing some files which are purely data, and I get "lost" sometimes ... so it would help if I could select it or somehow otherwise mark the text I've just pasted as to have a visual confirmaton, and to know from where to continue.     Since I updated Eclipse from Ganymede to Galileo on Mac OS X 10.5, the editor is incredible slow, independently of the programming language: I tried Python and PHP, and for both, the editor scrolling is very slow, like on a very old computer (I'm using am up-to-date Macbook). Any idea where I could tweak it?

  • Allow access to my server.

    I have a server, did some of the programming myself. It ison my home network, but I need to be able to access it from anywhere over the internet. I have done the port forwarding like I am supposed to, but I still cant get to it from an outside computer. It just displays Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. I don't know what else to do. I am on a Linksys WRT54G v8 router running ddWRT v24 micro firmware.

  • Is there a way to unhook a global hotkey in windows?

    I'm running Windows 7, and I installed an application that installed a global hot key (ctrl+shift+space) which conflicts with another application (Visual Studio) that uses that hotkey (though, not globally, only applications specific). The question is, knowing which application it is (ScanSnap Manager) and that it doesn't have a setting to turn off the hot key, is there a way I disable it through Windows somehow? Thanks!

A lot of this work is university related and constantly swapping files across several computers is annoying at best. If NTFS has been successfully reverse engineered to a useful degree, then why is the kernel driver still only read-only, with write support being very dangerous.....just as it was 5 years agi?

What I would like to be able to do, is to send an email to this emulator, and then scroll down through the email using the emulator.   • Using a SD card as a smart card for two-step verification for Mac logon

    What I am trying to do is create two-step verification to logon to my mac, one being that you would need to input a SD card (formated with special format or something) and then also have a password. Is there any software out there that could do this or any way of programming it so that once it reads the SD Card it makes the password bar visible for logon.   • What's the Minimum System Spec Recommended For Developer Laptop

    I'll be regularly running Visual Studio 2010 Professional, SQLServer Express, Office and at least 1 virtual environment running a Linux Distro. I want the machine to be snappy and responsive even when doing a reasonable amount of Development work. I want to spend what it takes for this, but I don't want to go overboard spending more than I need to. I won't be playing many games or graphics processing so i won't need a monster of a machine. Any recommendations?
