• How to use Map element as text of a JComboBox

  I am populating a JComboBox (using addItem()) with all the elements of a collection. Each element in the collection is a HashMap (so its a ComboBox of Hashmaps..). My question is - Given that I need each item to be a HashMap how do I set the text to apear in the combobox on the GUI? It needs to be the value of a certain key in the map. Normally if I am populating a combobox with my own type, I would just overide the toString() method...but I am not sure how to acheive this since I am using a Java HashMap. Any ideas (if possible, without implementing my own HashMap)? Update: It seems like there isn't anyway to avoid having the object int the JComboBox overide toString() if I want custom functionality..I wish there was a way to (1) specify the objects to be loaded into the JComboBox and (2) specify how these objects are to appear in the GUI.

• Have parameters in Dao methods to get entities the most efficient way for read-only access

  Allot of my use of hibernate, at least for that data that is presented on many parts of the web application, is for read-only purposes. I want to add some parameters to my Dao methods so I can modify the way hibernate pulls the data and how it handles transactions etc. Example usage: Data on the front page of my website is displayed to the users, it is read-only, so I want to avoid any session/entity tracking that hibernate usually does. This is data that is read-only, will not be changed in this transaction, etc. What would be the most performant way to pull the data? • my .jar file won't do anything.

  I created a program that more or less holds an array of strings as an object and randomly prints one. so basicaly class Happy { string[] namestrings = new string[#] constructor() { fill with some strings} public static void main (String[]arg) { create instance of class do some junk with it method that prints it } method that prints it {} another method } when i compile and run it on the command line it works fine but when on the comand line i type in jar -cf Happy.jar Fun.class i get a .jar file called Happy and when i click on it i get an error message that reads "the java Jar file happy could not be launched read the consol for possible error messages" I have a mac i'm running lepord if that makes a diference. Whats going on?

• How to see what objects lie in which generation in YourKit?

  I am using YourKit (11.0) to try to profile my j2ee app. The app uses java 6 and running on 64-bit linux (centos). I was told that YourKit possibly tells us which objects exist in which generation (eden, old, etc) at any given point of time. On a side note, I am trying to chase a problem where memory usage keeps increasing until a major collection happens (every 4 hrs) and I am suspicious about few particular objects, so I am interested to know where those objects lie at different times. Fortunately I know lot of memory is being consumed in one particular area of code (so other objects are possibly directly being put into the old gen), but don't exactly know how much of that memory is being put into eden space, how much is being collected by the minor collections, etc. Thanks.

  Hi, I was asked to build a java system that will have the ability to load new code (expantions) while running. How do I re-load a jar file while my code is running? or how do I load a new jar? Obviously, since constant up-time is important, I'd like to add the ability to re-load existing classes while at it (if it does not complicate things too much). What are the things I should look out for? (think of it as two different questions - one regarding reloading classes at runtime, the other regarding adding new classes).

  From the java.text.ChoiceFormat API: setChoices(double[] limits, String[] formats): Set the choices to be used in formatting. Parameters: limits - contains [...] formats - are the formats you want to use for each limit. They can be either Format objects or Strings. When formatting with object Y, if the object is a NumberFormat, then ((NumberFormat) Y).format(X) is called. Otherwise Y.toString() is called. I'm having difficulties understanding the documentation for the formats parameter: how can you possibly pass a Format/NumberFormat object to setChoices if it's declared String[] formats? Note that interestingly, the getters counterpart of setChoices are declared as follows: double[] getLimits() Object[] getFormats() -- not String[]!!! Is this a bug in the API? Should the setter have been declared setChoices(double[], Object[]) instead, or am I not understanding how to use setChoices correctly?

  I have a strange problem, that is causing me some grief. Here is the basic code I am using to do the lookup: InitialDirContext ctx = new InitialDirContext(env); DataSource dataSource = (DataSource)ctx.lookup("java:dataContent"); Otherwise, the DataSource returns fine from the context. Unfortunately, I need the jar in order to avoid ClassCastExceptions within Jboss 4.2.2. Any help is appreciated.

• How to keep Hibernate mapping use under control as requirements grow

  I've worked on a number of Java web apps where persistence is via Hibernate, and we start off with some central class (e.g. an insurance application) without any time being spent considering how to break things up into manageable chunks. Over time as features are added we add more mappings (rates, clients, addresses, etc.) and then amount of time spent saving and loading an insurance object and everything it connects to grows. In particular you get close to a go-live date and performance testing with larger amounts of data in each table is starting to demonstrate that it's all too slow. Obviously there are a number of ways that we could attempt to partition things up, e.g. map only the client classes for the client CRUD screens, etc., which would have been better to get in place earlier rather than trying to work it in at the end of the dev cycle. I'm just wondering if there are recommendations about ways to handle/mitigate this.

  Hello, Is it possible to create a class dynamically by reading an xml file ( in java preferably) ? if yes, please provide pointers on how to do it. In the process of development, we have come up with a class that has 5 attributes, all these attributes correspond to an entry in the xml file, now if the user adds/modifies the xml entry the object corresponding to it must change automatically, one approach would be generate the source code, before compile time.Is there any other way ?   I am trying to follow the recommended way of parsing XML with StAX using sun's Cursor-to-Event Example for Java EE 5. You are supposed to traverse the XML via the Cursor API and allocate an XMLEventusing an XMLEventAllocator when necessary. Awkwardly, sun's own example does not compile (at least not with JDK 1.6, even with 1.5 code compliance). The example tries to instantiate an allocator via new, but the according implementation classes in the JDK are not accessible externally. After reading the JavaDocs and searching the web I have found literally nothing. One could implement the XMLEventAllocator interface from scratch, but it seems really wrong, when there are perfectly good implementations in the JDK, besides not being an expert in StAX makes it difficult to get it right.

• I'm asked to tune a long starting app into a short time period

  Hi, I'm asked to shorten the startup period of a long starting app, however I have also to obligate to my managers to the amount of time i will reduce the startup - something like 10-20 seconds. As i'm new in my company I said I can obligate with timeframe of months (its a big server and I'm new and i plan to do lazy load + performance tuning). that answer was not accepted I was required to do some kind of a cache to hold important data in another server and then when my server starts up it would reach all its data from that cache - I find it a kind of a workaround and i don't really like it. do you like it? what do you think I should do? any suggestions? PS when i profiled the app i saw many small issues that make the startup long (like 2 minutes) it would not be a short process to fix all and to make lazy load. • Hudson jobs won't call javac?

  Hi, I have just set up Hudson on my server. For some reason, my build will not call javac to compile my builds...? I have set the path to the JDK in the Manage Hudson area, and it seems to recognise it (doesn't give me a warning). Is there something else I'm supposed to do?   hello i have a java applet application in which i use rich text area . i write URDU the national language of PAKISTAN. i managed to do so with uni codes. the problem is, when i write urdu in text area and select a font and color for each line it do all of this but when i save this file using UTF-8 encoding and then open it again it shows all text formatted as i choose format of last line. my requirement is to open file as it is saved. i mean each file should have same formatting as i done before saving.

• Problem saving Text file in database using Hibernate

  I'm having a problem saving large text files to MySQL database. If the text file size is around 5KB it successfully saves. If file is 148KB then I get this error from Hibernate: org.hibernate.exception.DataException: Could not execute JDBC batch update These is the SQL shows by Hibernate: Hibernate: insert into file_table (ID,FILE) values (?, ?) And in my hibernate file I'm using java.sql.Blob to store the file. Anyone knows why it fails to save a file size of 148KB but if I open that same file, cut it down to around 5KB, it will successfully save it? I thought the default limit was I think 2GB? This is weird. Thanks.

I know there are some standard mocks available in Spring, but I'd like to be able to mock out my own classes declaratively too. Just to check I'm not going about this the wrong way: the idea is to have a pair of JUnit test and Spring config for each integration test I want to do, mocking everything except the specific integration aspect I'm testing (say I had a dependency on two different data services, test one at a time) and minimising the amount of repeated Java code specifying the mocks.

• getTextContent from Node with whitespace character normalization

  Hi, I am working with XPATH, Java and want to extract some text out of one html page. The text is located under some div with some whitespace characters in between, like &nbsp; <br> etc. I want these to be converted into 'space' and 'newline' respectively while extracting. The method I am using to extract text is Element.getTextContent() which does not respect whitespace characters. Could somebody tell me if there is a way to extract text with whitespace normalization OR Extract whole html markup under the 'Node' so that i could replace it by myself. Thanks Nayn

  I cannot read and write extended characters (French accented characters, for example) to a text file using the standard InputStreamReader methods shown in the Android API examples. When I read back the file using: InputStreamReader tmp = new InputStreamReader(in); BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(tmp); String str; while ((str = reader.readLine()) != null) { ... the string read is truncated at the extended characters instead of at the end-of-line. The second half of the string then comes on the next line. I'm assuming that I need to persist my data as UTF-8 but I cannot find any examples of that, and I'm new to Java. Can anyone provide me with an example or a link to relevant documentation?

• Testing file uploading and downloading speed using FTP

  Hi all, I am working in a desktop application using java. In my application i have to perform a speed test which will show the file uploading and downloading speed. For uploading test i am uploading a small test file to a FTP server and based on time taken i am calculating the file upload speed. similarly i am downloading a test file form server and calculating download speed. But result i am getting doesn't match with actual FTP file uploading and downloading speed.it seems that the establishing connection to FTP server is increasing the time, hence the resultant speed i am calculating is less. Could you suggest any link or some way to get nearest uploading and downloading speed. i thanks to all your valuable suggestion.
