  Problem Description: Write a program in any language with the shortest number of characters that solves the following problem: Given a collection of cities and the cost of travel between each pair of them, find the cheapest way of visiting all of the cities and returning to your starting point. All solutions must take at most polynomial time. Input will be in the form of a text file named simply "i". The text file will contain data in the following format: city1# city2# cost$ cityA# cityB# cost$ ... Each element in the file is separated with a space, and there is a newline at the end of every line. Code count does not include whitespace. Solutions that take longer than polynomial time to find will not be accepted

• How to find (in javascript) the current "scroll" offset in mobile safari / iphone

  I'd like to know the x/y offset of the how far the user has "scrolled" within the viewport in mobile safari on the iphone. Put another way, if I (through javascript) reloaded the current page, I'd like to find the values I'd need to pass into window.scrollTo(...) in order to reposition the document/viewport as it is currently. window.pageXOffset always reports 0 jquery's $('body').scrollTop() always reports 0 events have a pageX, but this won't account for the scrolling of the page that happens after you release your finger if your gesture was to "flick" the page up/down. Namely, it'll give me a point when the finger leaves the screen, but that doesn't always match where the page will be after it's finished scrolling. Any pointers?

• Google index vs asp.net url routing

  I've made the change from querystring asp.net webforms application to an url routing one. Now I'm trying to let google know that there's a new set of urls to be aware of. The G has indexed 133 out of 179 new urls sent in sitemap.xml, but the site:mistral.hr command returns the old querystring version of the links. This could partly be so because I left the functionality of the old querystring version of the site(for backwards compatibility), and haven't done any 301 redirects(nor do I know how to achieve them in my shared hosting account). The old querystring and the new url routing both point to the same Default.aspx page.

• Tomcat custom classloader in Liferay principles

  When custom class loader in webapp context file is used and the context is being initialized and started, the custom classloader is just a substitution for the default webapp class loader, right ? But what are the consequences of doing this? Because, for instance, in Liferay portal an application can use custom PortalClassLoader, which just extends webapp class loader and does nothing else, it's the same class, no modifications at all. And I didn't find any following initializations like repository location changes etc. The point is, that the PortalClassLoader provides the webapp with an access to the ROOT portal context, which AFAIK doesn't use PortalClassLoader, according to debugger.

• Base URL in ASP.net Master Pages with virtual Directories

  Hi All, I have an ASP.net master page. In this master, I have all my css and javascript files defined. I also have a few images and a few buttons and hyperlinks. All the urls are all declared as relative ie "/scripts/ian.js" Everything works fine if this site is the root website, but I need it to work in a virtual directory. My problem is when I place this website in a virtual directory under a root site, all my links are pointing to the root site. so my links point to www.root.com/scripts/ian.js but it should be pointing to www.root.com/virtualDir/scripts/ian.js I thought the Base Href tag in the header would help, but so far it does not seem to be helping in anyway. All the links are still pointing to the root website when i hover over them. Any suggestions or ideas are welcome. Thanks

• Accessing original WordPress blog's DB from sub-blogs in network mode

  I'm helping with a university radio station website that runs WordPress and was recently switched over to Network (Multi-site/multi-user) mode by myself. The setup is as such: The parent site (www.stationID.com) runs a bunch of custom-built plugins to construct things like the show schedule calendar, the "Now Playing" widget, podcast list, et cetera. The new network websites ("wiki.stationID.com", "buddypress.stationID.com" for instance) run the same template as the parent site, but it stops after rendering the first section because the widgets from point 1 grab data from the main site's database that is not available to sub-blogs. My question is: how do I get data from the main site's tables on the sub-domain sub-blogs? A related question is: how do I set the $wpdb->prefix to be the same as the parent site on the child websites without it negatively effecting how the child website pulls data from its own database? Any help would be awesome, thanks!

• Sort Your Emails by Conversation in Outlook 2010

  Do you prefer the way Gmail sorts your emails by conversation?  Here’s how you can use this handy feature in Outlook 2010 too. One exciting new feature in Outlook 2010 is the ability to sort and link your emails by conversation.  This makes it easier to know what has been discussed in emails, and helps you keep your inbox more tidy.  Some users don’t like their emails linked into conversations, and in the final release of Outlook 2010 it is turned off by default.  Since this is a new feature, new users may overlook it and never know it’s available.  Here’s how you can enable conversation view and keep your email conversations accessible and streamlined. Activate Conversation View By default, your inbox in Outlook 2010 will look much like it always has in Outlook…a list of individual emails. To view your emails by conversation, select the View tab and check the Show as Conversations box on the top left. Alternately, click on the Arrange By tab above your emails, and select Show as Conversations. Outlook will ask if you want to activate conversation view in only this folder or all folders.  Choose All folders to view all emails in Outlook in conversations. Outlook will now resort your inbox, linking emails in the same conversation together.  Individual emails that don’t belong to a conversation will look the same as before, while conversations will have a white triangle carrot on the top left of the message title.  Select the message to read the latest email in the conversation. Or, click the triangle to see all of the messages in the conversation.  Now you can select and read any one of them. Most email programs and services include the previous email in the body of an email when you reply.  Outlook 2010 can recognize these previous messages as well.  You can navigate between older and newer messages from popup Next and Previous buttons that appear when you hover over the older email’s header.  This works both in the standard Outlook preview pane and when you open an email in its own window.   Edit Conversation View Settings Back in the Outlook View tab, you can tweak your conversation view to work the way you want.  You can choose to have Outlook Always Expand Conversations, Show Senders Above the Subject, and to Use Classic Indented View.  By default, Outlook will show messages from other folders in the conversation, which is generally helpful; however, if you don’t like this, you can uncheck it here.  All of these settings will stay the same across all of your Outlook accounts. If you choose Indented View, it will show the title on the top and then an indented message entry underneath showing the name of the sender. The Show Senders Above the Subject view makes it more obvious who the email is from and who else is active in the conversation.  This is especially useful if you usually only email certain people about certain topics, making the subject lines less relevant. Or, if you decide you don’t care for conversation view, you can turn it off by unchecking the box in the View tab as above. Conclusion Although it may take new users some time to get used to, conversation view can be very helpful in keeping your inbox organized and letting important emails stay together.  If you’re a Gmail user syncing your email account with Outlook, you may find this useful as it makes Outlook 2010 work more like Gmail, even when offline. • Interval tree algorithm that supports merging of intervals with no overlap

  I'm looking for an interval tree algorithm similar to the red-black interval tree in CLR but that supports merging of intervals by default so that there are never any overlapping intervals. In other words if you had a tree containing two intervals [2,3] and [5,6] and you added the interval [4,4], the result would be a tree containing just one interval [2,6]. Thanks Update: the use case I'm considering is calculating transitive closure. Interval sets are used to store the successor sets because they have been found to be quite compact. But if you represent interval sets just as a linked list I have found that in some situations they can become quite large and hence so does the time required to find the insertion point. Hence my interest in interval trees. Also there may be quite a lot of merging one tree with another (i.e. a set OR operation) - if both trees are large then it may be better to create a new tree using inorder walks of both trees rather than repeated insertions of each interval.

• Delphi 2010 Datasnap - Design Query

  I am investigating moving a thick client SQL based Delphi application to Multi Tier thin clients, and have been looking at using Datasnap in Delphi 2010. I have worked through the White Paper written by Bob Swart and extended this further. My main question really is that I want to make the server side efficient in terms of connections and SQL Queries due to multiple queries being run and remaining open at the same time to interrogate data, can anyone point me in a direction for guidance on how to design a real world Datasnap Server application, as the demo's don't go into enough detail. • Macromedia Flash 8 - Ireland Map, on mouseover dublin, dublin expands

  Macromedia Flash 8 Question: I have a map of Ireland, just a gif, and there are several small buttons representing various point of interest around Ireland, which are scattered across the map. This part works fine. THE PROBLEM: Dublin is too small to contain all of its points of interest (approx 20). THE SOLUTION OnMouseOver Dublin, I would like Dublin to expand to perhaps 5 or 6 times its original size, and I would like to be able to have Dublins Points Of Interests now displayed within this larger dublin area, which sits on top of the Ireland map. OnMouseOut Dublin, this enlarged Dublin region now shrinks back to its original size. MY QUESTION: How do I implement Dublin?? REQUIREMENTS: 1) The expanded Dublin region shud NOT be clickable, it shud simply be a dublin image on a black background. 2) It must be possible to add additional buttons within this expanded Dublin region. Any help or assistance greatly appreciated...

• How do I change the frame position for a custom MKAnnotationView?

  I am trying to make a custom annotation view by subclassing MKAnnotationView and overriding the drawRect method. I want the view to be drawn offset from the annotation's position, somewhat like MKPinAnnotationView does it, so that the point of the pin is at the specified coordinates, rather than the middle of the pin. So I set the frame position and size as shown below. However, it doesn't look like I can affect the position of the frame at all, only the size. The image ends up being drawn centered over the annotation position. Any tips on how to achieve what I want? • Sub-classing TreeView in C# WinForms for mouse over tool tips

  Ok, this is a weird one. The expected behaviour for a TreeView control is that, if ShowNodeToolTips is set to false, then, when a label for a tree node exceeds the width of the control (or, more accurately, it's right hand edge is past the right hand edge of the client area), then a tooltip is shown above the node showing the full item's text. I'd like to disable that, because the above semantic doesn't always work, depending on what the treeview is contained within. So I have rolled my own, and got the tooltips to work (and line up better than the default one!) - but I would like to be able to disable the 'default' behaviour for situations where it would work natively. So, can anyone point me in the right direction as to which message to post to the TreeView in order to disable that behaviour? I have looked at the windows control reference, but couldn't find anything that looked like it might be the one. Thanks Matt

• script running very slow in IE with Jquery quickflip plug-in

  I have a jQuery plugin running on my site that is executing very, very slowly in IE7/8 to the point that it throws a slow script warning to the user. It doesn't happen in any other browser, and I can't figure out what might be going on. If you go to this page: http://dev.xeetic.org/projects You'll see that there are 16 results on each page, and each one has a "flip" behavior attached, using the jQuery plugin "quickflip." Attaching this behavior is very slow in IE. If I reduce the result set to 8 or 4 per page, it's faster, but still very bogged down. I have contacted the author of the script with no success. I am willing to pay for a solution, if I'm allowed to offer such a thing on this site.

• DVCS and data loss?

  After almost two years of using DVCS, it seems that one inherent "flaw" is accidental data loss: I have lost code which isn't pushed, and I know other people who have as well. I can see a few reasons for this: off-site data duplication (ie, "commits have to go to a remote host") is not built in, the repository lives in the same directory as the code and the notion of "hack 'till you've got something to release" is prevalent... But that's beside the point. I'm curious to know: have you experienced DVCS-related data loss? Or have you been using DVCS without trouble? And, related, apart from "remember to push often", is there anything which can be done to minimize the risk?

• Is AlarmManager.setRepeating idempotent?

  In my android app, I'm setting an alarm that I want to occur repeatedly, hence using AlarmManager.setRepeating(). I don't want to keep track of whether the alarm is set myself (sounds like a bad idea that's prone to fail at some point), and there seems to be no API support for checking whether a particular alarm is already set for a given Intent. Hence, I am pessimistically resetting the alarm each time my app activates: alarmManager.cancel(pendingIntent); ... alarmManager.setRepeating(..., pendingIntent); Question: is calling setRepeating() idempotent i.e. do I need to explicitly cancel() any prior alarm or can I safely just call setRepeating() and be done with it?

• Elusive race condition in Java

  I am creating a graphing calculator. In an attempt to squeeze some more performance out of it, I added some multithreaded to the line calculator. Essentially what my current implementation does is construct a thread-safe Queue of X values, then start however many threads it needs, each one calculating a point on the line using the queue to get its values, and then ordering the points using a HashMap when the calculations are done. This implementation works great, and that's not where my race condition is (merely some background info). In examining the performance results from this, I found that the HashMap is a performance bottleneck, since I do that synchronously on one thread. So I figured that ordering each point as its calculated would work best. I tried a PriorityQueue, but that was slower than the HashMap. I ended up creating an algorithm that essentially works like this: I construct a list of X values to calculate, like in my current algorithm. I then copy that list of values into another class, unimaginatively and temporarily named BlockingList, which is responsible for ordering the points as they are calculated. BlockingList contains a put() method, which takes in two BigDecimals as parameters, the first the X value, the second the calculated Y value. put() will only accept a value if the X value is the next one on the list to be accepted in the list of X values, and will block until another thread gives it the next excepted value. For example, since that can be confusing, say I have two threads, Thread-1 and Thread-2. Thread-2 gets the X value 10.0 from the values queue, and Thread-1 gets 9.0. However, Thread-1 completes its calculations first, and calls put() before Thread-2 does. Because BlockingList is expecting to get 10.0 first, and not 9.0, it will block on Thread-1 until Thread-2 finishes and calls put(). Once Thread-2 gives BlockingList 10.0, it notify()s all waiting threads, and expects 9.0 next. This continues until BlockingList gets all of its expected values. If I run it without any System.out.printlns, it will sometimes lock because of conflicting wait() and notifyAll()s, but if I put a println in, it will run great. • Resizing and rotating an image in Android

  I'm trying to rotate and resize an image in Android. The code I have is as follows, (taken from this tutorial): Bitmap originalSprite = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(getResources(), R.drawable.android); int orgHeight = a.getHeight(); int orgWidth = a.getWidth(); //Create manipulation matrix Matrix m = new Matrix(); // resize the bit map m.postScale(.25f, .25f); // rotate the Bitmap by the given angle m.postRotate(180); //Rotated bitmap Bitmap rotatedBitmap = Bitmap.createBitmap(originalSprite, 0, 0, orgWidth, orgHeight, m, true); return rotatedBitmap; The image seems to rotate just fine, but it doesn't scale like I expect it to. I've tried different values, but the image only gets more pixelized as I reduce the scale values, but remains that same size visually; whereas the goal I'm trying to achieve is to actually shrink it visually. I'm not sure what to do at this point, any help is appreciated.

• 404 Error - HEAD request on default page

  I am working on a project where we are about to go to internal release. So we are working to clean up the small problems before then. I was looking at our logs and noticed a high number of 404 errors. On further inspection it seems that all of them are related to HEAD requests. I haven't been able to find any substantive information about the preferred method for handling this in a standards compliant manner. Is there anything out there that can point out the proper way to handle that.
