• How do I easily change hardcoded links to a file in Excel?

  I have a project where I maintain a list of all my students and their information in an Excel file labeled "BigList.xlsx". Then, I have about 40-50 other separate ancillary excel files that link to BigList by using vLookup. For example, in cell A1 of an ancillary file you might see a formula that looks like this: =Vlookup(B3, 'c:\documents and settings\user\desktop[BigList.xlsx]Sheet1'!$a$1:$b$10000,2,false). The vlookup link above references BigList.xlsx. However, I just realized that I need to change that file name to something else, like MasterDatabase.xlsm (notice the different extension). Is there an easy way to do this without having to manually go through all 40-50 files and doing a find & replace? I think the basic idea is to change a hardcoded link into a dynamic one where I can change the filename of BigList.xlsx anytime, and not have to go back through all 40-50 files to update their links.

• Open a PDF file in an external app on iPad

  I'd like to make my app to open a specified PDF by an external app of the user's choice on the iPad. How can I do that? Or, is there any open-source PDF reader framework available so that I can put it into my app? My situation in more detail: I'm thinking of porting to the iPad from OS X / rewriting from scratch for the iPad an app which manages lots of PDFs (journal articles, etc.), but I don't want to write the PDF reader part, because there are many good ones already out there; I don't want to reinvent the wheels. (You might say you shouldn't reinvent pdf management apps, but I'd like to make one as a front end to SPIRES, and there isn't one so far.) As the app would be a front end to a serious reading activity, UIWebView's pdf capability is not enough. Also, users of my app would have various preferences which app to use. In more detail, I am interested in using Mono from project start on a Linux host developing in C# using Visual Studio for development, ideally with remote debugging if that is realistic developing web-services in MONO accessible in a RESTful manner, returning JSON hiding the services processes behind an Apache access the services either via javascript/AJAX or from a thin script layer written in PHP scalability is important for me unit-testing of webservices Any recommendations for material I could sift through to get a good head-start? I might add that I'm C#/.NET savvy, but not in the context of web development. I've been using it since it came out, but mainly for internal server-client applications where the clients were Windows desktop apps and the communication layer was remoting or, sometimes, more low-level socket-based. • How often to run getWritableDatabase() and getReadableDatabase()?

  I'm writing a Service, a Content Provider, and one or more apps. The Service writes new data to the Content Provider's SQLite database every 5 minutes or so plus at user input, and is intended to run pretty much forever in the background. The app, when running, will display data pulled from the Content Provider, and will be refreshed whenever the Service puts more data into the Content Provider's database. Given that the Service only inserts into the database once every five minutes, when is the right time to call SQLiteOpenHelper's getWritableDatabase() / getReadableDatabase()? Is it on the onCreate() of the Content Provider, or should I run it every time there is an insert() and close it at the end of insert()? The data being inserted every 5 minutes will contain multiple inserts.

• ASP.NET How expensive is it to call an Application Variable many times?

  The short of it is: Is it costly to check an Application Variable such as Application("WebAppName") more 10-20 times each time a page loads? Background: (feel free to critique) Some includes in my site contain many links and images which cannot use relative urls due to their inclusion in different paths. Hence these includes contain frequent instances of <img src="<%=Application("Webroot")%>images\image.gif"> Is it expensive to keep calling an Application variable like this? Should I just put the Application value in some local variable to use where needed? IMPORTANT NOTE: I need my webapp to run fine on a server whether it be in the root web ("/") or in a virtual subweb ("/app"). Thanks in advance for any wisdom shared.

• Jawa Swing: Dialog with expanding / progressive disclosure?

  I've got a dialog in a desktop Java Swing app. What I want is a classic Windows-style Progressive Disclosure dialog, where pressing a "More Options" button opens up a whole extra batch of options on the dialog. (Which can then be hidden again by clicking that same button, which now says something like "Hide".) What's the right way to do this in Swing? I can't seem to google-up anything directly relating to this, and what I have found boils down to "reset the preferred dimensions to 0 and revalidate" which can't possibly be the right way to do this and also causes all kinds of wacky things to happen.

• PLCameraController is not adding in viewcontroller

  Hi, I've declared PLCameraContoller instance in my AppDelegate class as:- self.cameraController = [PLCameraController performSelector:@selector(sharedInstance)];[cameraController setDelegate:self]; And I'm accessing it in one of my viewcontroller class as:- del = [[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate]; UIView previewView = [del.cameraController performSelector:@selector(previewView)]; previewView.frame = CGRectMake(0,0, 320, 480); self.view = previewView; [del.cameraController performSelector:@selector(startPreview)]; [del.cameraController performSelector:@selector(setCameraMode:) withObject:(NSNumber)1]; Where "del" is an instance of my AppDelegate class. But i can see only black background in my viewcontroller view in iphone device. Also if i remove "self" from the appdelegate.m code of cameracontroller it also showing blank.   I am using POI to create an Excel spreadsheet in Java. What am I doing wrong? If I don't use the "setFillPattern" line, no color shows up at all.

• Why JavaScript dialogs (alert/prompt/confirm) are not widely used and not under active development?

  If there is a need to display some simple confirmation popup, most developers would rather install jQuery, find some dialog plugin for it, skin it, than put a one liner: if(confirm("Are you sure?")) { ... } Using alert() for displaying error messages is considered cheap. And how many sites can you name that are usingprompt()? So, the question is: Is there something wrong with those dialogs so they should be avoided? Yes they have (very) limited functionality and customization, but when you don't need anything fancy, is using js dialogs still a bad practice? Why these dialogs haven't seen any improvement in past 10 years (probably longer) and none is planned for near future? Wouldn't it be nice to have native js access to fully customizable desktop-level dialogs? At least adding error/warning/info type of dialogs and adding ability to customize button captions would be a big help.

I tried using z-index, but it didn't work. 2 ) I'm trying to make the div #search align directly beneath the "More", but upon setting the width of #search, it aligns to the left side. 3 ) When I hover over the navigation on the left, the popup is being overlapped by the text in the middle. I want the popup to be on top of the text.

  Hi, I know theres hundred of questions and answers out there, but cant find one to specifically answer this. I need a web editor that will let me choose a dark themed editor. I understand gvim is one, but im not totally ready to let go of my mouse. I would like something like sublime text editor for windows, but open to other suggestions. The less bloat the best. I dont need a full IDE like eclipse, but willing to compromise, as long as the themes can easily be added. I've tried bluefish, kompozer and not happy with them. Just need a basic text editor that will highlight php syntax on a dark background.

• Multiple Broadcast Messages with Less Data or Less Broadcast Messages with More Data?

  Hi, I am developing an application which is communicating with the server. Tha application can perform log-in and get different parameters from server. The application consists of a RESTful client (custom class for making requests), Communication Service (the service which runs in the background) and the main activity. For now I created multiple broadcast messages and multiple broadcast receivers in the main activity so when the application performs login operation a receiver (loginBroadcastReceiver) in the main activity receives a message and when another parameter is received from the server different message is broadcasted and another receiver handles the message. This way however the application performance is poor but I am not sure whether it is due to multiple broadcast receivers. Does anyone know what is the best way to exchange data between service and main activity - is it better to create a single broadcast receiver and retrieve all parameters from message or is it better to initialize multiple broadcast receivers for multiple parameters? I would appreciate if you could provide any useful resource about the topic because I'm writing the thesis and it would be good if the solution could be explained.

• How does Microsoft Detours work and how do I use it to get a stack trace?

  I am new to Microsoft Detours. I have installed it to trace the system calls a process makes. I run the following commands which I got from the web syelogd.exe /q C:\Users\xxx\Desktop\log.txt withdll.exe /d:traceapi.dll C:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe I get the log file. The problem is I don't fully understand what is happening here. How does detours work? How does it trace the system calls? Also I don't know how to read the output in log.txt. Here is one line in log.txt 20101221060413329 2912 50.60: traceapi: 001 GetCurrentThreadId() Finally I want to get the stack trace of the process. How can I get that?

  Question: Is it possible to compile a program on linux using a .dll file? Where this is going: This .dll will be used to write a php extension to some proprietary software from a third party. Background and Research: I have been given a library called proprietary.lib. I was curious, as I have never seen the .lib extension before, so I typed: file proprietary.lib The output was: proprietary.lib: current ar archive I did some research and found that ar is more-or-less tar (and in fact, I guess tar has since replaced ar in most *nix environments). • Silent Printing of PDF From Within Java

  We are looking into silent printing of PDF documents from within Java. The printing will be invoked from the desktop and not through a browser so we cannot use JavaScript. PDF Renderer is an operational solution but their rendering quality is not acceptable. iText does not seem to be pluggable with the Java print service. There are some commercial Java libraries, jPDFPrint by Qoppa, JPedal, and ICEpdf which we have not tried out yet. Does anybody have any experience with PDF silent printing from Java?

  Hello, i have a inherited from QGraphicsScene and QGraphicsItem to create my own classes. I use Qt 4.6. I want to set a specific opacity on each items of my scene. I use setOpacity : setOpacity method, but its not the result i hope. I want to have for example one item opaque and an other transparent (to see the desktop, or the other application). But if i dont set the opacity of the QGraphicsView to 0.5, i have not the transparancy. And if the QGraphicsView is set to 0.5, the item is not real opaque. What should i do ? Thanks you.

  There is a common feature of modern browsers where a user can select some text and drag it to an input field. Within the same field it causes moving of text, between different fields it does copying. How do I disable that? If there is no portable way, I am mostly interested in firefox. This is an intranet webapp, so I am also interested in modifying the browser/getting a plugin to do this. Maybe some system-level settings (I`m on windows XP)? I need to keep the default select-copy-paste functionality. The background is I have multiple-field data entry forms, and users often drag something by mistake.

• Redirect application's graphical output in Windows Vista/7 (with DWM)

  I want to create a desktop manager that takes informations of all running applications including states and screenshots to display and manipulate them in my virtual space (probably in 3D). It can be considered as another layer of abstraction on top of Windows itself. Because many native Windows Vista/7 features like Flip 3D and Live Thumbnails are able to show each window's activities in real-time e.g. video keeps playing in taskbar's thumbnail, I think DWM allows an application to redirect its output to somewhere else or some special processes are able to collect other applications' graphical outputs (maybe of child processes only). Has Microsoft released a set of public APIs to do so? If not, is it technically possible? And is it easier if I limit my scope to just .NET applications with WPF?
