• Advise on a 240,000 sqft outdoor wireless network

  I would be very appreciative of some advice in the purchase of equipment to provide a wireless network that covers the entire area of an outdoor arena. The area is rectangular-ish in shape. 400ft wide and 600ft long. It has 6 light towers, 1 on each of the 400 foot ends and 2 on each of the 600 foot ends. I can mount on anything and spend as much money as needed. The needs of the network would be to provide access for, up to 15 wireless HD cameras with audio, and a public-wifi network. Can someone point me in the right direction as far as equipment and antennas ? I can provide any additional information that you may need.

• How would you diagnose an integrated network card that doesn't show up on the device list?

  I've been setting up a server based around a Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R motherboard (G33, PCH9R with integrated Realtek 811B network device. I've enabled it in the BIOS, but it doesn't show up in the pre-boot PCI device list, isn't recognized by Windows (even after installing the chipset and networking drivers) and doesn't even show up via lspci. I've tried cycling power, disabling, cycling again, enabling, cycling again etc. to no avail. I'm sort of at a loss at this point; the board isn't under warranty anymore, but I'd rather not have to replace it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

  My workstation was recently updated to Windows 7. I've downloaded putty and have configured it to the same settings I had under Vista. Whenever I ssh to a vm running Centos 5.4 and try to run emacs on a file, I'm getting an error about a connection to an X server: [ecto1 ~]$ emacs foo.bar Connection lost to X server `localhost:10.0' I never received this error message when I had Vista. I can get around it by aliasing emacs to 'emacs -nw', but I don't feel that I should have to do this. My co-worker has the same hardware that had the same upgrade and his sessions do not seem to be doing this. Any advice? I can't find anything on google and don't know where else to start. • Generating my own SQL Server SSL Certificate

  I hear it's possible to make myself a test certificate with MakeCert from Windows SDK, but the beast is 1.5 GB, which I feel reluctant to download for a half-megabyte program. I do, however, have IIS Resource kit with me, which has selfssl to generate certificate for IIS. Will that work for SQL Server? Is there a more convenient way of generating myself an SSL certificate for SQL Server use? I even tried using CREATE CERTIFICATE with TSQL within SQL Server and then have it BACKUP into a file, but with no success. I must have confused the concept of certificate fundamentally. Any advice?

• 2.5" SSD in a 3.5" desktop drive bay normal?

  I'm a little out of touch with modern desktop builds, but I recently built a new machine anyway. I want to pick up a SSD for my I/O intensive apps (EverQuest 2 and Flash CS4 mostly), but I'm having trouble finding any in the 3.5" form factor. Is this expected, or do I fail at product search? And, if it is expected, do 2.5" SSDs come with an adapter to fit them in my desktop machine, or will I need to purchase one separately? And, finally, if I do need to purchase an adapter, are they pretty standard or are some better than others. General advice is most welcomed, though specific product recommendations in addition would be helpful!

  At the moment our all computers in one big LAN, it is the intention to separate the admin and edu (it's in a school) especially for traffic and less for security. How do this best? I have a drawing, but can't post it (a can send it in a mail) Firewall?, VLAN?, IPCop (no two green zones)?, pfsense? ... Should there be two scopes on the dhcp server (WIN 2008 R2), one for admin and one for edu or is one scope enough? I would like your advice, I am a student in training with this task as a project. • "Always available offline" option missing on one network drive in Windows 7

  My network setup at home has 2 network storage devices on the network. The one is for media content on a Popcorn Hour A-110 and the other is a D-Link DNS-320 in RAID 1 configuration for business files. When I access these network drives and right click a folder the following context menu appears for the A-110 device, but not for the D-link. I have tested this in both Windows 7 32bit and Windows Vista 64bit. In both instances the "Always available offline" option is only available for the A-110 storage device, and not for the D-link. How do I get this option for the D-link? Any advice or ideas are welcome.

• Is Family Tree Maker 2011 the right upgrade for a FTM 11 user?

  My father has used Family Tree Maker for years, but hasn't upgraded since version 11. It is difficult to tell from reviews at Amazon and other places whether upgrading to FTM 2011 is a good choice. File incompatibilities and upgrade woes sound like customer service is lacking, and i've read reports of it uploading your data to their database but then trying to sell you a download of data. Looking at the ancestry.com site makes me think it's solely about selling add-ons and upgrades. On the other hand, the feature set seems fairly rich and the software has a pretty strong following. I was able to get Gramps working on my system, but that's not going to work for my dad. Any advice on a good upgrade path?

  I am trying to figure out a practical way to stress test a server for 300 to 600 simultaneous connections. Any advice? Thank you everyone for the help. To be more specific (sorry I wasn't before) this is a Flash Media Server on AWS that will be streaming live video. I've been having problems with the video freezing/buffering for everyone and I need to verify if its on the user end, upload end, or server end. I mainly need help with stress testing the server with 300-600 multiple request before going live.

  I have a Windows Server 2003 and asp.net website running on localhost. I have to install php and mysql, but php installation doesn't work for whatever reason. I was wondering if I could install package such as xampp on windows server to save time and hassle installing in manually (I could not find a tutorial for this). I was wondering though, if it is safe, i.e. what will happen if I go to http://localhost/ - will I get the php or asp website? In general, is it safe to install xampp on windows server 2003? • Switch 302 redirect to 301 with Apache 2 ProxyPass in front of Tomcat 6

  I'm trying to optimise my site for SEO and it seems as though their is a 302 direct in action for the http requests. I'm hosting my app on a Tomcat 6 server which lies behind an Apache 2 server. I use the ProxyPass method (http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-6.0-doc/proxy-howto.html) to forward all requests to port 8080 (the port my app is hosted on). I've seen a lot of advice on how to set the redirect type when using the VirtualHost method but none to do with ProxyPass. The app is a Struts app that forwards users on to index.jsp when they hit the base url. Could this also be the issue? I'm grateful for any help on this one! Cheers!

• Cannot start Xampp on server with IIS

  I am running a Windows Server 2003 with IIS and I am trying to install XAMPP in order to be able to run php and mysql based pages. I tried to install php on IIS, but it is too complicated and time consuming for me. I am able to run asp on localhost/ and I would like to run php websites on different port, say localhost:81/. After installing xampp and changing the port in httpd.conf file to 81 I try to turn on apache, but it turns off after about 5 seconds. Mysql works fine. It seems that there is a port clash, but I do not know how to change the ports and turn the apache permanently. Any advice appreciated. (I know it is more a server fault question, however I posted it there as well and did not get any reply, so I decided to try here)

• LGA 1155 or LGA 2011? Which has a brighter future?

  I'd basically like to rehash this question, only 22 months later. The last system I built was in 2006, shortly after AMD came out with socket AM2. I was able to upgrade the processor on it 3 times and would love to do the same with my next computer. Since AMD seems to be lagging, I'm going for Intel this time. I've read that Intel changes chip sets all the time, so there's no safe bet. I also read (1 comment on 1 forum) that said LGA 2011 will have 8-core support, but LGA 1155 won't, which leads me to believe that LGA 2011 might be a better choice. Anyone have any good advice for me?

• How to share iPhoto library between multiple users

  I am looking for advice on the best way to share an iPhoto library between two users on the same Mac. I currently use this approach and it works fine most of the time. One issue I have is that I will get a permission error when syncing my iPod. This seems to happen if the other user has used iPhoto and I have not opened iPhoto before syncing the iPod. If I open iPhoto then sync the iPod again there is no error. How do others solve this problem?

  My setup is two ISPs on a single interface and single network. I can either set my default gateway to 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.250 and either work. My desire is to utilize both of them with some load balancing. • Bind telnetd to specific IP on AIX 5.3?

  Is it possible to bind telnetd to a specific IP on AIX 5.3? I know telnet is evil. Unfortunately, we have to have it listening on one interface for a specific application, but I want to make sure that's the only interface/IP that it's listening on. I have been searching all over the net and have found some advice for Linux, but it doesn't appear to be applicable to AIX. Full disclosure: I am not the server admin, but I am working closely with them and am familiar with *nix. Add: This is an internal server, which is connected to two different vlans. This is NOT connected to the Internet(!).

  We have two sites that each have an internet connection and have a dedicated dark fibre between them. Each site has it's own IP space and we have an AS number. We're looking to be resilient to failure of the internet connection to either site and so need to buy a pair of approriate routers. Requirements are: Able to run 2 bgp sessions (one with the ISP, one with the other site router) Option to take a full table from the upstream ISPs would be nice. Able to provide HA gateways on the LAN side (e.g. 192.168.0.254 will automatically migrate if it's host router lost power) A dedicated device rather than a server running Linux / BSD Not crazy expensive. Any help / advice much appreciated.

  I administer a small network (10 users). I'm getting ready to deploy a internal webapp that will be hosted and accessed locally only. There are about 10 users on the network (192.168.111.0/24), a win2k3 server, apache (RHEL), and Mysql (RHEL), and various miscellaneous peripheries. I'd like to isolate the apache and sql boxes into a seperate area of the lan to keep things easier to maintain/grow. I've been reading about vlans, subnets, etc.. • FreeBSD after motherboard replacement; should I have any concerns?

  So after three years my motherboard (Asus M2N-0MX) has died off. As I go shopping for i's replacement tomorrow I have a concern about the data that I currently have on the drives wtihin. I'm currently running BSD 6.2, and am wondering if there would be any concern with installing a new OS on that system, would it be better to jsut install the latest BSD version, and are their any pitfalls that I should watch for to make sure I don't end up losing 750gb's of data. The setup consists of the following(to the best of my knowledge): Pioneer DVD drive 3ware RAID card four 250gb SATA drives in RAID 5 config thanks to anyone that can offer some advice, or just to confirm if I am over thinking things.

• Remove noise from a recording

  I used to record important technical meetings and demos using Camtasia Studio, using a Mic to capture the speaker voice. Sometimes we invite attendees by asking them to call us in the meeting, and they would call on a cell phone then we switch it to loudspeaker so we can hear and talk to them and also record the conversation on Camtasia. The problem I am having now is that playing back those recording produces the regular noise that results from the microphone being close to the mobile phone (the kind of noise you hear when your mobile phone rings and it is near a speaker). Any advice on removing this noise?

• dd-wrt switch for PfSense

  I currently have eth2 on my pfsense set up, and configured as 192.168.1.1, it has dhcp setup with allocation being 192.168.1.10 - 192.168.1.245. On my dd-wrt box, i disabled the WAN, and set it to act as a port for the switch. I disabled dhcp, dnsmasq, spi firewall, Wlan0 and set a static IP for the router being 192.168.1.10 Pfsense is plugged into lan0 and pc plugged into lan1 (wan port is empty) I have followed a few different guides, but i can't seem to get my router to act as a switch. Anyone have success using DD-WRT as a switch while using pfsense as your dhcp/dns/gateway. Any advice would help :)
