• GRUB Problem or Hardware Problem?

  I have Windows XP Professional and Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10 on dual boot. I often get a GRUB loading failed error during boot-up. Or sometimes, when I try to boot into either Ubuntu or XP, I get a Could not read from source error. Now this is funny. After getting one of the above errors, if I simply unplug the SATA cable from Hard Drive end and plug it again, the problem gets solved. So what and whose problem is it? GRUB or My Hardware ? P.S.: I was suggested on StackOverflow that ServerFault is the right place for this question.

• Windows 7 PC crashes after being locked a few minutes

  I have a problem with an Optiplex 755 PC running (32-bit) Windows 7 Professional. I just installed the operating system last week, and ever since, it seems to crash when I lock the screen. It doesn't happen immediately; it's usually after I walk away, so a few minutes (but I'm not sure exactly how many). I have this non-specific error in the Event log. I've run a chkdsk, thinking it might be hard drive-related, but that didn't help. • Sound does not work on the administrator profile.Works on a non-administrator profile on Windows XP

  Initially I suspected a missing driver, but then sound ( for movies,songs etc ) works fine on the other non-administrator account, but does not work when I log in to the Administrator account. And yes..I have checked the sound volume and mute status as well.   I bought Windows 7 Professional Retail which I installed on my laptop. Now I've decided to move it to be on my desktop PC, so I uninstalled Windows from my laptop, restoring the original OS came with the laptop (Vista Business), and installed Windows 7 on my desktop PC. The problem is that I cannot activate my copy of Windows 7 on the desktop PC. Every time I try to activate it I get the error message The product key you typed cannot be used to activate windows on this computer" and the code of the error is: Code: 0xc004c008 Description: The activation server determined that the specified product key could not be used. How can I solve this problem?

• Meetings Disappearing from Outlook 2010 Public Calendar

  We are experiencing a frustrating issue with our Public Calendars in Outlook 2010. Meetings that have been scheduled months in advance are missing, but will then reappear. If user A logs in @ 9:30 and goes to the calendar, certain meetings will be missing. 15 Minutes later, when user B logs in, the meetings are there. It is not tied to the actual user- I have seen this issue occur with the order of logging in reversed. These are with meetings that were posted to the calender months ago, so it should not be an issue of an item being updated. We have not upgraded our Exchange environment (still running on 2003), but this is a new machine, running Windows 7 Professional, on a domain, running office 2010. Are there any quirks or settings that I am missing or not aware of?

• What VNC (or similar) software for Windows 7 Home allows me to control my parents’ computer remotely as an administrator user?

  Here’s what I dream of: I install Windows 7 Home on my parents’ PC. They have a regular user account that they use, meaning they can’t install anything. I have an administrator account, meaning I can install things for them. I install some sort of VNC software on their machine that lets me access their computer remotely under the administrator account, so that I can install software for them (or do other administrator tasks, e.g. updates) without actually going to their house. Is there any VNC or VNC-like software that supports the above? (I guess I might be better off buying them Windows 7 Professional, and using Remote Desktop. At some point I’ll give up and get them an iPad, but for now, remote Windows admin is the dream.)

• Is it possible to run pgp 6.5.8 freeware on Windows 7 64 bit machine?

  I am trying to get the PGP Command Line -Freeware Version 6.5.8 by Networks Associates working on a Wndows 7 64 bit machine. Does anyone know if it is possible? I installed it in C:\pgp when i run pgp, it keeps telling me that it can't find the pgp.cfg file. My PGPPATH is defined and set to C:\pgp I have also included this path in my Path variable Can anyone tell me what i am doing wrong. The documentation states that: "The first time you start PGP, the software checks to see if the environment variable PGPPATH is defined. If PGPPATH is defined, the software puts the pgp.cfg in the %PGPPATH% directory" Edit: This is most likely a Windows 7 professional folder rights issue, since the file pgp.cfg can't get written. I tried my best given the folder full rights, but im not 100% confident that i did it right. Anyone help me?

I'd like to add to them and create sort of an archive of article and files that may be useful down the road. I'd also like to organize this collection of files not only by simple grouping but also with tags. I feel like that will make searching through them years later much easier. Suggestions on software that would be good for this? Just a general file manager, something that uses tags that can be attached to each file? Thanks

  I have installed the final RTM version of Windows 7 professional 64 bit on a test system before we begin the roll out in our company. I'm having problems connecting to several HP printers that we have on the network. These printers are being shared from a Windows 2003 server host. I have downloaded the lastest HP Universal Printer dirver, however I'm unable to add the 64 bit driver onto the 2003 server system (it's 32 bit). Does anyone have any advice on how I can get connected to these printers from the Windows 7 system?

  I have windows XP professional installed on my desktop. It shows up the following errors - Physical memory dumping blue screen. : This aint a new problem, i have been facing this problem ever since i bought this systme. initially the maintainence guy said it was a faulty hard drive and i have got it replaced 3 times already in the past 1 yr. The system gets utterly slow after a usage of around 2-3 months and then these errors crop up and i have to reinstall my windows to keep away these errors. But this time,its been only a week and the blue screen has come up 3 times. What can be the actual cause of the error?? Mine is an assembled machine, its a core 2duo with gigabyte motherboard and a 1 gb ram, 160 gb seagate hdd. please help me its a seriously annoying problem. • Trackpad and battery on stop working at same time

  Gateway E-475M G Windows 7 Professional SP1 Synaptics TouchPad 15.2.20.0 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery 6.1.7600.16385 It seems that when my battery stops working correctly, my touchpad will also act erratically. Specifically, the computer will charge for a few seconds, then stop charging for another few seconds. This will continue for some time. But if I close the lid, the charging LED will stay lit. As for the touchpad, it'll click or highlight things at random when I can get it to move. As a test, I stopped charging my computer. Now it seems my touchpad is working fine. I've tried to reinstall both the battery and touchpad drivers. I've also started the computer in safe mode, but that didn't help either. Edit: I've now tried booting my computer with an Ubuntu live cd, and the charging problem persists. So, it now seems my computer can only charge continuously as long as it's turned off or sleeping.

  Currently I am using : OSX 10.7.5 VMWare:5.0.1 with windows 7 professional Problem: Getting disconnected from LAN game. Description: 4 of us are trying to play frozen throne on the same network. The thing is, they are all running windows computers, and I am running W7 on VMware. I haven't made any adjustments other than changing from "sharing internet with my mac" to Bridged network "autodetect". When we start to play, everything works then all of a sudden I get disconnected. This happens every once in a while, the timing differs from time to time. None of the others ever disconnects.   I've got an old laptop that is running Windows 2000 & Windows 98 in a multi-boot configuration. I need to add MS-DOS to that list of startup options. I've already added a primary partition, formatted it for FAT16 and made it bootable, and installed MS-DOS 6.22. My question is, how do I add my MS-DOS partition to the list of startup options? More information: My single hard drive has three primary partitions: 0: FAT32 Windows 2000 1: FAT32 Windows 98 2: FAT(16) MS-DOS 6.22 Currently, the boot-up screen lists Windows 2000 and Windows 98 as options, with Windows 2000 as the default choice. • Invalid BOOT.INI (dual boot XP with 7)

  I had Windows XP x64 as my main system, and i also had a second partition with Windows XP x64. Both booted from first partition (C:) I then installed Windows 7 Ultimate on the first partition. I've added NTLDR using BCDRDIT. I've also copied NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM and BOOT.INI onto the drive where XP remained. However then i try to boot into Windows XP x64 i get Invalid BOOT.INI file Booting from c:\windows\ NTDETECT failed I found instructions on how to fix it using a boot disk, however the partitions are on a software RAID. I've tried to boot from a customized XP CD with the drivers, however it does not offer me a Repair option for some reason - just setup. • 1080p playback on external monitor

  My system (netbook) specs: 1.6 GHz dual core atom N2600 2 GB DDR3 RAM Integrated GMA3600 GPU Win 7 Professional 32 Bit Daum Pot Player V-1.5 The issue: I downloaded a 1.33 GB sized 1920 x 1080 HD documentary (file extension: mp4) and it plays without a hitch using pot player. However, when I connected an external display (an LED Full HD 24" monitor) using D-Sub, the video plays fine but the player controls become very unresponsive. For instance, it takes about 40 seconds to exit full screen while playing. I tried: Installed/updated all the latest monitor drivers Updated the VGA drivers for GMA3600 No other programs ran while the video played, with most unwanted services and background processes disabled/killed. CPU usage goes only up to 49% when the video plays Question: What may I do in order to improve the player response/video playback experience? Do I need to play with (or change) Pot Player's default video decoders, etc?

• Scripts on UNC paths take very long to run

  I have several scripts in UNC paths (from Windows batch files to PHP scripts). No matter how I run them (double click on explorer, my editor's run command menu or Windows command prompt) they take really long to start running (like 14 seconds). Once they get started they run normally. This doesn't happen if I run them from mapped drives. I'm using Windows XP Professional SP3 inside an Active Directory domain and files are hosted in a Windows Server box (not sure about the version, it's an HP dedicated file server with bundled OS). Why does it happen? Is there a way to speed up things while using UNC paths?

  I'm currently using Jolly's Fast VNC and Mac OS X's built-in VNC server (System Preferences, Sharing, Screen Sharing) to access my iMac remotely. Here's my problem: When I'm using the iMac remotely, the screensaver deactivates and the screen is unlocked. If someone had physical access to my iMac they could walk up to it and start using it. Is there some way I can set things up so that when I'm using my iMac remotely the screen stays locked, like Windows XP Professional does when you're using RDP? I know I can use X remotely with the iMac locked, but I would like to use Mac applications remotely, too.

  Hi All, I have just purchased windows 7 64bit. I entered the disk in the drive and it told me I couldn't upgrade as I am using XP so I have tried to boot from CD instead but it doesn't work. It seems to look at the disk for a few seconds and then ends up at a screen saying windows failed to start and then I hit enter and it loads windows XP again. Does anyone know what could cause this? • Windows 7 won't read from NAS on LAN

  I've got a Linkstation NAS drive on a local network. Having just got a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Professional, I can no longer read anything of the drive. I've tried accessing the drive using \192.168.1.55\share, using ftp programs such as WinSCP, filezilla and even using firefox to hit ftp://192.168.1.55. The really annoying thing is that through these methods I can see the files on the drive, counting out any kind of connection issues. I can navigate through the NAS file system, but as soon as I try and copy a file off the NAS, things just stop working. Accessing the drive through a WindowsXP machine works fine. So far I've tried: Disabling firewalls Adding the LmCompatibilityLevel key to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa Using the 40 - 56 bit encryption instead of the 128 bit. Has anyone got any suggestions of what I can check or try. This is driving me crazy and I'm totally out of ideas? Thanks

• Accessing localhost on IIS7 from another computer on the network

  I recently upgraded computers to Windows 7 Professional and am running IIS7. When I'm on my computer I can easily access localhost through my web browser but when I try from another computer on my network (replacing localhost with my computer name) it doesn't work. I also tried using "computername.domain.com" and still no luck. I can access other computers running Windows XP and IIS 5 but I'm having no luck accessing my own from another computer. I checked and my IIS7 has anonymous users enabled. Am I missing any other setting? Is this an IIS7 thing or am I missing a setting? Thanks in advance!
