  • ASP.NET C# - do you need a separate datasource for each gridview? [closed]

    - by Brian McCarthy
    Do you need a separate datasource for each gridview if each gridview is accessing the same database but different tables in the database? I'm getting an error on AppSettings that says non-invocable member. What is the problem with it? Here's the c# code-behind: protected void Search_Zip_Plan_Age_Button_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { var _with1 = this.ZipPlan_SqlDataSource; _with1.SelectParameters.Clear(); _with1.ConnectionString = System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.AppSettings("PriceFinderConnectionString").ToString; _with1.SelectCommand = "ssp_get_zipcode_plan"; _with1.SelectParameters.Add("ZipCode", this.ZipCode.Text); _with1.SelectParameters.Add("PlanCode", this.PlanCode.Text); _with1.SelectParameters.Add("Age", this.Age.Text); _with1.SelectCommandType = SqlDataSourceCommandType.StoredProcedure; _with1.CancelSelectOnNullParameter = false; Search_Results_GridView.DataBind(); } thanks!

  • Where to store shaders

    - by Mark Ingram
I have an OpenGL renderer which has a Scene member variable. The Scene object can contain N SceneObjects. I use these SceneObjects for storing the vertex position and any transforms. My question is, where should shaders be stored in this arrangement? I guess they need to be in a central location because multiple objects can use the same shader. But then each object needs access to the shader because it needs to set attributes into the shader. Does anyone have any advice?

  • Sanity checks vs file sizes

    - by Richard Fabian
In your game assets do you make room for explicit sanity checks, or do you have some generally expected bounds which you assert? I've been thinking about how we compress data and thought that it's much better to have the former, and less of the latter. If your data can exceed your normal valid ranges, but if it does it's an error, then surely that implies you're not compressing the data well enough? What do you do to find out if your data is compressed as far as it can be, and what do you use to ensure your data isn't corrupted and ensure it's an official release? EDIT I'm not interested in sanity checking the file size, but instead, how you manage your sanity checks and whether you arrange the excess size caused by the opportunity to do sanity checks by using explicit extra data, or through allowing the data enough file space (data member size) to be out of valid range and thus able to be checked merely by looking at the asset in memory after loading.

  • What is the best C++ interview question?

    - by David Thielen
If you could ask a C++ programmer one question to measure their C++ skills, what would it be? The question I think is best is: Can you call "delete this;" inside a member function? (I put this as a link so you can think it through first, then go to The Best C++ Interview Question – Ever! to see the correct answer.) I don't ask this because I expect most people to know the answer. If they did it would not be that useful a question. I ask to see if they can work their way to the correct answer and how they do so.

  • How do I draw video frames onto the screen permanently using XNA?

    - by izb
I have an app that plays back a video and draws the video onto the screen at a moving position. When I run the app, the video moves around the screen as it plays. Here is my Draw method... protected override void Draw(GameTime gameTime) { Texture2D videoTexture = null; if (player.State != MediaState.Stopped) videoTexture = player.GetTexture(); if (videoTexture != null) { spriteBatch.Begin(); spriteBatch.Draw( videoTexture, new Rectangle(x++, 0, 400, 300), /* Where X is a class member */ Color.White); spriteBatch.End(); } base.Draw(gameTime); } The video moves horizontally acros the screen. This is not exactly as I expected since I have no lines of code that clear the screen. My question is why does it not leave a trail behind? Also, how would I make it leave a trail behind?

  • How to set up bridged networking in Xen?

    - by Joe Carr
I have 2 domU virtual machines installed on a 11.10 Oneiric Dom0. My internal network is on the 192.168.1 subnet, and when the domU's start, they get ips on the 192.168.122 subnet. I have attempted to follow the instructions here : http://wiki.kartbuilding.net/index.php/Xen_Networking xend-config.sxp is configured correctly, but neither of my domU's have a config file in /etc/xen to modify. ifconfig reports that I have the following devices : eth0, lo, tap3.0, vif3.0, vif4.0, virbr0 bridge-utils is installed. I also just attempted to follow these steps : http://serverfault.com/questions/233201/bringing-the-xenbr0-interface-up-on-xen-under-ubuntu-8-04 sudo brctl addbr xenbr0 sudo brctl addif xenbr0 vif3.0 device vif3.0 is already a member of a bridge; can't enslave it to bridge xenbr0. Any ideas on next steps are greatly appreciated!

The apparent answer is: You Can Have The Summit Anywhere You Want... ... as long as it's in Seattle. PASS conducted a survey on this about a year ago, and I commented on the results and PASS' (mis-)interpretation of said results in a post entitled On PASS Summit Locations, Time Will Tell . • Java Developers: Open-source Modules, Great Tools, Opportunity.

    - by Paul Sorensen
The role of Java developer may just be better than ever. An excellent article in Java Magazine discusses the availability of web-based tools that help development teams more effectively manage their projects and modules. If you are a Java developer you should definitely read this article. I especially like the Expert Opinions scattered throughout the article. These highlight real-world usage of the latest and greatest development tools.  As you consider steps to move your career forward, consider Java certification. Oracle has over 15 unique Java certification credentials available. The process of becoming certified in Java and preparing for your exams will require you to study, learn and practice (code). All of this activity will help you sharpen your skills and increase your working knowledge of Java - making you a better developer and more valuable member of your team. You can use the Certification Finder on the Oracle certification homepage to find a Java certification that is right for you. Thanks!

  • JCP Survey!

    - by Yolande Poirier
The London Java Community (LJC), which is an Executive Committee member of the Java Community Process (JCP), is asking Java developers to participate in a JCP survey titled "What should the JCP be doing?"  The JCP is the mechanism that decides on future standards related to Java technology. Those standards give users like you a choice of technologies to develop with and more independence from vendor solutions.   The JCP cares about community feedback and has successfully encouraged community participation using transparent tracking processes. Take the survey, your feedback matters.

  • Pair programming and unit testing

    - by TheSilverBullet
My team follows the Scrum development cycle. We have received feedback that our unit testing coverage is not very good. A team member is suggesting the addition of an external testing team to assist the core team, but I feel this will backfire in a bad way. I am thinking of suggesting pair programming approach. I have a feeling that this should help the code be more "test-worthy" and soon the team can move to test driven development! What are the potential problems that might arise out of pair programming??

  • Having a generic data type for a database table column, is it "good" practice?

    - by Yanick Rochon
I'm working on a PHP project where some object (class member) may contain different data type. For example : class Property { private $_id; // (PK) private $_ref_id; // the object reference id (FK) private $_name; // the name of the property private $_type; // 'string', 'int', 'float(n,m)', 'datetime', etc. private $_data; // ... // ..snip.. public getters/setters } Now, I need to perform some persistence on these objects. Some properties may be a text data type, but nothing bigger than what a varchar may hold. Also, later on, I need to be able to perform searches and sorting. Is it a good practice to use a single database table for this (ie. is there a non negligible performance impact)? If it's "acceptable", then what could be the data type for the data column?

  • Design patterns for effects between actors and technology

    - by changelog
I'm working on my first game, and taking the opportunity to brush up my C++ (I want to make as much of it as portable as I can.) Whilst working on the technology tree and how it affects actors (spaceships, planets, crew, buildings, etc) I can't find a pattern that decouples these entities enough to feel like a clean approach. Just as an idea, here's the type of effects these actors can have on one another (and techs too) An engineer inside a spaceship boosts its shield A hero in a spaceship in a fleet increases morale A technology improves spaceships' travel distance A building in a planet improves its production The best I can come up with is the Observer pattern, and basically manage it more or less manually (when a crew member enters a spaceship, fire the event; when a new building is built in a planet, fire the event, etc etc.) but it seems to be too tightly coupled to me. I would love to get some ideas about how to approach this better.
