• Building out a well-structured service layer

  First, I want to say that it has been awhile since I've gotten into the kind of detail I am at currently. Lately, I've been very much in the SharePoint world and my entire thought process was focused there for quite some time. I'm very glad to be creating databases again, writing "lower level" code to deal with data access, and so forth. I'm working on a very simple web application and taking the opportunity to reacquaint myself with the way I used to structure my projects and various layers of code. For instance, I might have created something like this the last time I went about building something basic from scratch: - MyProject/ -- Domain/ --- Impl/ ---- Person -- Model/ --- IPersonRepository --- Impl/ ---- PersonRepository : IPersonRepository -- Services --- IPersonService --- Impl/ ---- PersonService : IPersonService That would have been the project I did the real work in, and then referenced in the ASP.NET project. My approach was very much inspired by what I saw from the CodeCampServer project as at that time ASP.NET MVC was still very new and it was the only open project I could find actively being developed, and by solid people at that. What ways are you going about structuring your projects and code, when it comes to a general problem you're working on? Certainly various problems can put constraints on this, but assume it's a basic problem without specific needs that affect the structure and layout of your code.

• Exception handling in Spring MVC with 3 layer architecture

  I am building a simple web applications with 3 layers - DAO, Service, MVC. When in my Controller I want to delete menu group and it contains menus I am getting ConstraintViolationException. Where should I handle this exception? In DAO, Service, or in Controller? Currently I am handling the exception in Controller. My code below.   I currently have a project that uses various DB access technologies mainly for showcasing or for demos. Currently we have: Namespace App.Data (App.Data.dll) Folder NHibernate Folder EntityFramework Folder LinqToSql The above structure is ok as we only use Sql Server as the DB. But going forward we will be including Oracle, MySql etc. So what would be a better structure with this in mind?   Hi, I need a method for adding "business days" in PHP. For example, Friday 12/5 + 3 business days = Wednesday 12/10. At a minimum I need the code to understand weekends, but ideally it should account for US federal holidays as well. I'm sure I could come up with a solution by brute force if necessary, but I'm hoping there's a more elegant approach out there. Anyone? Thanks.

What I would like to do is adding the sprites but like an image, what's behind isn't stored.   I'm writing a data driven WPF client. The client will typically pull data from a WCF service, which queries a SQL db, but I'd like the option to pull the data directly from SQL or other arbitrary data sources. I've come up with this design and would like to hear your opinion on whether it is the best design. First, we have some data object we'd like to extract from SQL. // The Data Object with a single property public class Customer { private string m_Name = string.Empty; public string Name { get { return m_Name; } set { m_Name = value;} } } Then I plan on using an interface which all data access layers should implement. Suppose one could also use an abstract class. So you can insert a sub-level such as , continue to build the request, and remember to insert a closing tag". I'm interrested for this application. Do you know if this package exists ?   I am running SharePoint 2010 with SQL 2012, I am trying to get Business Connectivity Services (BCS) running but I am facing a double-hope authentication issue. Everytime I try to connect to the external BCS list created in SharePoint designer, I get the error Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'. In the event viewer on the SQL server I see a login failure for an anonymous user from the SP server IP address. Background information below: I have enabled Kerberos under SharePoint Central admin. I have the following AD domain accounts: SP_Farm - main website pool SP_Services - for SharePoint services (including BCS) SQL_Engine - SQL database engine I then created the following with SetSPN: SetSPN -S http/intranet mydomain\SP_Farm SetSPN -S http/intranet.mydomain.local mydomain\SP_Farm SetSPN -S SPSvc/SPS mydomain\SP_Farm SetSPN -S MSSQLSvc/SQL1 mydomain\SQL_DatabaseEngine SetSPN -S MSSQLSvc/SQL1.mydomain.local mydomain\SQL_DatabaseEngine SetSPN -S MSSQLSvc/SQL1:1433 mydomain\SQL_DatabaseEngine SetSPN -S MSSQLSvc/SQL1.mydomain.local:1433 mydomain\SQL_DatabaseEngine I then delegated the AD accounts for any authentication protocol to the following: SP_Farm - SP_Farm (http service type, intranet) SP_Farm - SQL_DatabaseEngine (MSSQLSvc, sql1) SP_Service - SP_Service (SPSvc) SP_Service - SQL_DatabaseEngine (MSSQLSvc, sql1) I have also checked the WFE is being logged on to with Kerberos, with the WFE server event log showing event ID 4624 with Kerberos authentication, this is OK. The SQL is also showing connections authenticated as Kerberos from the WFE with the following query: Select s.session_id, s.login_name, s.host_name, c.auth_scheme from sys.dm_exec_connections c inner join sys.dm_exec_sessions s on c.session_id = s.session_id Despite the above, credentials are not passed from the client through the SharePoint server to the SQL server, only the anonymous account is used. I get the following error in the WFE server for 'BusinessData' ID 8080: Could not open connection using 'data source=sql1.mydomain.local;initial catalog=MSCRM;integrated security=SSPI;pooling=true;persist security info=false' in App Domain '/LM/W3SVC/1848937658/ROOT-1-129922939694071446'. The full exception text is: Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'. If I set a username and password with the Secure Store Service and set the external list to use the impersonated credentials, the list works. Any ideas what I have missed and what can be tried next?

• One Comcast Business Gateway, One Router, Two Web Servers

  I have a Comcast business account with a router and a web server (info) attached. behind the router there are multiple computers and a second web server (info) which also serves as a file server. (info) has two nics in it. One direct to comcast and one connected to the router. It needs to serve the world it's websites. It needs however, to also be able to see all the internal computers and (com)'s served files. With just 1 nic (the one connected to the router, not comcast), (info) works fine but no one outside can see it. (com) services port 80 and (info) needs to handle port 80 as well. I have two domain names registered, and 5 static ip's from comcast. right now h t t p: / /www.graceamazing.com handled by (com) works fine and h t t p: / /www.graceamazing.com:1307 handled by (info) works fine. but as soon as I enable the 2nd nic in (info) h t t p: / /www.graceamazing.info runs extremely slow (Horribly slow). however, h t t p: / /www.graceamazing.com:1307 and .com work fine. (com) has an ip address via the router 70.89.233.41 (info) has a ip addy of 70.89.233.46 via comcast (2nd nic) and a internal ip of 192.168.x.100 via static behind the router. Any suggestions or changes to make that will make h t t p: / /www.graceamazing.info perform with the same speed it has when going through h t t p: / /graceamazing.com:1307 is there a setting I should check / could have misssed?

• Small Business HP Virtualisation and iSCSI SAN Options

  We are a small business that hosts our core product on a number of HP servers. Our core production setup is 1x HP DL380, high powered for a SQL Server Database 1x HP DL360, mid powered for our core application server 6x HP DL320, low powered for our front ends We run our training / testing / support systems on a similar setup, the servers are just older and less powerful. Unfortunately this is now causing us issues as the system has grown beyond the capabilities of these older servers. Upgrading these servers would be expensive and we believe that virtualisation is probably the way to go for the future. Locally we run a number of test / dev environments on ESXi using Direct Storoage on a couple of high powered DL360's and these are performing fairly well. We're thinking that instead of replacing all of our test servers that we can implement an iSCSI SAN and one or two high powered hosts. Hopefully looking that when it comes to replace our live servers as well that we can just expand the virual environment to cope. So my question is... Can anyone offer any advice on some suitable options? We have generally always been extremely happy with HP servers, all of our kit is currently HP, therefore our preference would be to stick with HP, however, I'm always happy to hear about other options. I'm hoping that initially a budget of around 15-25k (GBP) would be suitable, this could potentially be increased if I had confidence that the system would pave the way for a cost effective upgrade of our live systems in the future as well. I am new to SAN's and my only real experience is playing with OpenFiler on some old desktops. I think iSCSI should be suitable, but I've not done any research into how SQL server may perform. I've had a browser through HP's sites and see plenty of information about EVA, MSA, LeftHand, etc. However, from looking at all that, I don't see which options would be best and more importantly I don't know exactly what I would need to buy. Any help, links, opinions would be much appreciated. Thanks

• Backup plan for linux webserver in small business?

  Hi, I am currently in the process of writing a backup plan for the webserver in use by my business. I am very new to this area and have a few ideas about how things should work but am unsure of what tools to use and what sort of restore process is appropriate. I'm looking for something relatively simplistic and it doesn't have to be 100% paranoid just enough to give me a reliable backup. Speed is not of the essence and there is not going to be a live fallback in place. The backup will be onto a single hdd that will be stored onsite (no option for offsite as yet). Backups will be taking place weekly. I am constrained by both time and money which is why I'm aiming for a good enough solution. Is taking an image of the webserver system drive periodically and using that as the backup appropriate? Should I be testing that the backups restore correctly every time that I perform one? This is a bit broad but what setup would you use if you were in my place, given the services I am running? Should I add additonal machines and split the services? Any advice is much appreciated! Local text and voice messenger software Bridge the 3 internet connections and route all the internet connections from the main server Ability to allow or deny internet access to any computer on the network. I have performed a virus scan on the server which did originally pick up 5 viruses: riskware.tool.ck -> File riskware.tool.ck - > Memory Process trojan.agent.bdavgen -> File trojan.agent -> File HiJack.comsysapp -> Registry Data But after removing these and rebooting the machine we have had no luck Has anyone else ever come across this issue before? Also to elaborate it is happening as frequently as every minute.

• cheap gigabit switch for small business

  my friend's business is currently borrowing my Adtran 1224R and is very happy with it. it's configured with a few VLANs to segment customers, internal traffic and public wifi. port 1 is a "trunk" port to the router, a chunky Linux box with iptables+NAT. they push a lot of traffic over the LAN (data backups) and really need gigabit. besides, I'd like my Adtran back :P my goal is to find a cheap(ish) switch that can function as a drop-in replacement. it looks like VLAN trunking is actually part of the 802.1q spec, so anything with VLAN support should cover the current trunk-to-router setup. it's nice to have both a web interface and SSH, but I can configure it either way if needed. things like the Netgear GS724T have caught my eye, but it seems like none of the hardware in the $300-500 range have really solid reviews. I'm concerned that "cheaper" hardware might not work for a network full of power users. does anyone have a recommendation for the Netgear GS724T or a switch that will meet my needs?

To realize the benefits of the platform depth we can think of Oracle WebCenter's segmentation of duties along the lines of the 3 Cs - Content, Collaboration and Contextual Data.  All three of which can have their foundations developed by IT, then provisioned to the business on a per role basis. Content – Oracle WebCenter benefits from an extremely mature content repository.  Work flow, audit, notification, office integration and conversion capabilities for documents (HTML & PDF) make this a haven for business users to take control of content within external and internal portals, custom applications and web sites.  When deploying WebCenter portal take time to think of areas in which IT can provide the "harness" for content to reside, then allow the business to manage any content items within the site, using the content foundation to ensure compliance with business rules and process.  This frees IT to work on more mission critical challenges and allows the business to respond in short order to emerging market needs. Collaboration – Native collaborative services and WebCenter spaces are a perfect match for business users who are looking to enable document sharing, discussions and social networking.  The ability to deploy the services is granular and on the basis of roles scoped to given areas of the system - much like the first C “content”.  This enables business analysts to design the roles required and IT to provision with peace of mind that users leveraging the collaborative services are only able to do so in explicitly designated areas of a site. Bottom line - business will not need to wait for IT, but cannot go outside of the scope that has been defined based on their roles. Contextual Data – Collaborative capabilities are most powerful when included within the context of business data.  The ability to supply business users with decision shaping data that they can include in various parts of a portal or portals, just as they would with content items, is one of the most powerful aspects of Oracle WebCenter.  Imagine a discussion about new store selection for a retail chain that re-purposes existing information from business intelligence services about various potential locations and or custom backend systems - presenting it directly in the context of the discussion.  If there are some data sources that are preexisting in your enterprise take a look at how they can be made into discrete offerings within the portal, then scoped to given business user roles for inclusion within collaborative activities. 2. Think Generically, Execute Specifically Constructs.  Anyone who has spent much time around me knows that I am obsessed with this word.  Why? Because Constructs offer immense power - more than APIs, Web Services or other technical capability. Constructs offer organizations the ability to leverage a platform's native characteristics to offer substantial business functionality - without writing code.  This concept becomes more powerful with the additional understanding of the concepts from the platform that an organization learns over time.  Let's take a look at an example of where an Oracle WebCenter construct can substantially reduce the time to get a subscription-based site out the door and into the hands of the end consumer. Imagine a site that allows members to subscribe to specific disciplines to access information and application data around that various discipline.  A space is a collection of secured pages within Oracle WebCenter.  Spaces are not only secured, but also default content stored within it to be scoped automatically to that space. Taking this a step further, Oracle WebCenter’s Activity Stream surfaces events, discussions and other activities that are scoped to the given user on the basis of their space affiliations.  In order to have a portal that would allow users to "subscribe" to information around various disciplines - spaces could be used out of the box to achieve this capability and without using any APIs or low level technical work to achieve this. 3. Make Governance Work for You Imagine driving down the street without the painted lines on the road.  The rules of the road are so ingrained in our minds, we often do not think about the process, but seemingly mundane lane markers are critical enablers. Lane markers allow us to travel at speeds that would be impossible if not for the agreed upon direction of flow. Additionally and more importantly, it allows people to act autonomously - going where they please at any given time. The return on the investment for mobility is high enough for people to buy into globally agreed up governance processes. In Oracle WebCenter we can use similar enablers to lane markers.  Our goal should be to enable the flow of information and provide end users with the ability to arrive at business solutions as needed, not on the basis of cumbersome processes that cannot meet the business needs in a timely fashion. How do we do this? Just as with "Segmentation of Duties" Oracle WebCenter technologies offer the opportunity to compartmentalize various business initiatives from each other within the system due to constructs and security that are available to use within the platform. For instance, when a WebCenter space is created, any content added within that space by default will be secured to that particular space and inherits meta data that is associated with a folder created for the space. Oracle WebCenter content uses meta data to support a broad range of rich ECM functionality and can automatically impart retention, workflow and other policies automatically on the basis of what has been defaulted for that space. Depending on your business needs, this paradigm will also extend to sub sections of a space, offering some interesting possibilities to enable automated management around content. An example may be press releases within a particular area of an extranet that require a five year retention period and need to the reviewed by marketing and legal before release.  The underlying content system will transparently take care of this process on the basis of the above rules, enabling peace of mind over unstructured data - which could otherwise become overwhelming. 4. Make Your First Project Your Second Imagine if Michael Phelps was competing in a swimming championship, but told right before his race that he had to use a brand new stroke.  There is no doubt that Michael is an outstanding swimmer, but chances are that he would like to have some time to get acquainted with the new stroke. New technologies should not be treated any differently.  Before jumping into the deep end it helps to take time to get to know the new approach - even though you may have been swimming thousands of times before. To quickly get a handle on Oracle WebCenter capabilities it can be helpful to deploy a sandbox for the team to use to share project documents, discussions and announcements in an effort to help the actual deployment get under way, while increasing everyone’s knowledge of the platform and its functionality that may be helpful down the road.
