• What specs to consider when buying SSD?

  When I bought "traditional" hard drives, I have been told to consider specs like RPM (5400, 7200, etc.), buffer size (16MB, 32MB etc.), and interface (IDE, SATA, etc.). (did I miss something?) What about solid state drives (SSD)? What are some important specs to consider in terms of performance and reliability? By the way, are SSDs just as reliable as traditional hard drives now? A couple years ago I heard they're not, but that's a "long time" ago now. Thanks for your answer.

• Trying to turn an WD Mybook 1TB to slave drive in PC

  Yes I realise that most external Hard Drives would not be transitioned into internal sitting Hard Drives, but unfortunately we broke the miniUSB connection that transfers the data from external Hard Drive to laptop. What we are TRYING to do now, is get the WD MyBook 1TB to funtion alongside (preferably as SLAVE) to my currently exsisting Desktop Hard Drive. both are SATA drives. We have the SATA power, and Data cables, and these are in place (but - somehow NOT working) - Help please - I am not computer illeterate, just don't know how to switch this so it works. How do I turn one into master, and the newer one (that was external) into the slave drive?

  I use msysgit on Windows to use git, but I often want to navigate through a Windows-style *.lnk shortcut. I typically manage my file structure through Windows' explorer, so using a different type of shortcut (such as creating hard or soft link in git) isn't feasible. How would I navigate through this type of shortcut? For example: PCUser@PCName ~ $ cd Desktop PCUser@PCName ~/Desktop $ ls Scripts.lnk PCUser@PCName ~/Desktop $ cd Scripts.lnk sh.exe": cd: Scripts.lnk: Not a directory Is it possible to change this behavior, so that instead of getting an error, it just goes to the location of the directory? • Intel RAID0 on Windows 8 not Displaying Correct Media Type

  I have my primary C Drive which consists of 2 Intel 120GB SSD Drives in a RAID0. I have a clean install of Windows 8 Pro, latest MEI software, latest RST software, latest Intel Toolbox. Prior to this I had installed Windows 8 Pro as an upgrade. When I went into the Optimize Drives while in the Upgrade installation, it showed the Media Types as Solid State Drives. However, now since I am in a brand new install, it is showing the Media Type as Hard Disk Drive. I am worried about this because of the trim not working properly. Before when in the upgrade, it showed SSD as the media type and the Optimize option would perform a manual trim. Unfortunately, my search credentials on Google are so common to many other things (ie Raid0, SSD, Windows 8, Media Type) that all I am finding are useless topics.   My Windows XP PC has stopped booting. On start up, before Windows boots a screen appears saying: Windows Could Not Boot: Could Not Find or Corrupted file <Windows root>\Sytem32\Hal.dll Please Reinstall the file... From that I understand that I have to reinstall the OS but my computer is so old that I have lost the backup and recovery disk. My Computer's Info: 32Bit Computer Pentium 4 Windows XP Service Pack 2 HP History: My Computer has 4 hard drives 2 internal 40 GB drives (C And D) 2 external 8GB drives (E And F) Additional Info: I need the files inside C And E The computer reads my flash drive as a hard drive (8.45GB)(I have never booted while my USB pluged in while I was troubleshooting) With some test I discovered that the C drive wasn't detected by the computer I have already configured the boot order of BiOS I have Set The SATA to IDE The Question: I have a setup for windows 8 32 bit how can I boot from my USB to run that setup? If that isn't the proper way to handle this problem please tell me the proper way.

• Any experience with SATA SAS Interposer Cards?

  Driven by the current price difference between SATA and SAS disks on one side and the potentially bad behaviour of SATA disks in bigger storage arrays on the other side, I have found so-called SATA-to-SAS interposer cards. Advertised as "seamlessly adding SAS capabilities to existing SATA disk drives", I wonder if anyone here has had some experience with these or similar products. The major benefits I can identify are the increased cable voltage (if all drives are SAS connected), the ability to power-cycle the drive and multipath (if desired). Obviously the SATA drive will still have to be RAID edition. The question is: Do these cards indeed increase the overall reliability of a storage system, or will failing SATA disks cause trouble nevertheless? Edit: I'm not asking for hypothetical answers, only actual experience please. I'm well aware that the typical 10k SAS drive is more reliable (and better performing) than 7200 SATA drives. But how does a nearline SAS, which is phyiscally the same disk as its SATA counterpart, compare to the SATA version with interposer?

• Macbook superdrive got calibration problems

  I have an intel macbook dual 2Ghz, bought about three years ago. I've had some problems with the superdrive and changed it a year and a half ago. the drive is Matshita DVD-R UJ 857 now I'm into burning cd's again and try to burn a DVD with Toast Titanium from an .iso on my hard drive But it won't work. When I launch the burn, the disc suddenly stops turning, and an error log pops: medium error, sense code = 0x73, 0x03 then I try with the built in cd burner of the macbook as soon as I click burn, the cd stops turning in the drive, and error log says peripheral couldn't calibrate power of the laser required for medium so since I'm not that logical of a geek, I try my first idea: let's see with other brands of DVD! the problem is that it works, now. but I'd like for all of my medium to be usable, and I've already seen my ridata DVD being burn, so here's the question. What the hell is happening with my superdrive? :)

• Deleted entire harddisk. Now my laptop won't boot anything and stuck at grub rescue

  My laptop is Dell Inspiron N4030. I used to use Ubuntu 12.04 and it was on the entire hard drive. I tried to install windows 7 but my laptop couldn't install it. So, I decided to delete the entire hard drive and do a fresh install of Windows 7. But after deletion I immediately removed the gparted live usb which I was using to delete the partitions of my hard drive. And then tried booting from windows 7 cd, didn't work, tried ubuntu live cd, didn't work, tried hiren's boot cd, didn't work, tried super grub disk, didn't work. Probably I'm not doing it right. Help needed badly.

• How much power supply do I need for my server, and could a shortage be causing my odd crashing?

  I have 5 servers, all with similar hardware (i7, four 2tb 7200rpm drives, two 4tb 5400rpm drives, 430 watt power supply), and lately the machines have been freezing up. This has gotten worse in the last day or so, and I can't pinpoint any explanation. One recent change was adding the two 4tb hard drives. The crashes happen most often while running a large Hadoop job, so I was originally thinking the load was causing some issues, but last night one server just froze without any heavy load on the box (or so I think), other than HDFS (Hadoop's distributed file system) was probably rebalancing itself since two of the five nodes were offline. If I plugin a monitor and keyboard to one of these frozen machines, I can't get any response or feedback on the screen. Any ideas on possible points of failure and/or different logs I can look at to investigate? • Hard Drive upgrade advice for a Dell PowerEdge 1950

  My setup is a Dell PowerEdge 1950 with 2x 140Gb Hard drives in a RAID 1 configuration. The OS is Windows 2003 Web Edition and disk is partitioned into to two, a 12Gb C: partition and the remainder is the D: drive. Both are very close to full capacity. Ideally I want to replace those drives with 2x 1Tb drives while retaining all data. First of all is this possible without rebuilding the server? If so, will I need any 3rd party software, Symantec Ghost, Partition Master for e.g., to do this? Any general advice as to how to go about doing this?

  Hello, I'm planing to build a little linux homeserver. It will mainly be used for storage and maybe as an media pc. I plan to build a software raid5 with 4 1.5TB or 2TB hard drives. I already decided to use the Western Digital Caviar Green 1.5 TB drive, but then I read about some problems with the WD green series about many drives failing and that they are not recommended for raid anyway. Of course, I couldn't find much facts on the issues so I thought I just ask here ;-) What hard drives would you recommended for a software raid5 setup? As I only need it for storage, the whole thing doesn't have to be too fast. So I prefer a cheap price and silence to great performance.

I want generic right click on explorer, on which, search gives me this registry to edit: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell\cygwin] @="c:\\cygwin\\bin\\bash.exe --login -i -c \"cd '%1'; bash\"" My problem lies with the value of the key, which doesnt work on %1 but on some static value like /cygdrive/c Could someone please tell me the proper way to pass current directory to the command, also please refer me some basic and advanced pages for same. • Making audio CDs en mass - Linux based solutions?

  My mom's sings and gives away cds to people. Invariably it falls to me to have to burn cds for her, and burning 50-100 cds on a single drive is a pain. I DO have a handful of cd burners and a slightly geriatric old PIII 450. This is what i want to be able to do - either point an application at a folder of WAV or MP3s, say how many copies i need on CLI (since then i can SSH into the system and use it headless) feed 2 or more CD burners cds until its done, OR pop in a single CD into a master drive and have its contents duplicated to 2 or more burners. I'd rather have it running on linux, be command line based, and be as little work as possible - almost automatic short of telling it how many copies i want would be ideal. I'm sure i'll have people wondering about legality - My mom sings her own music, and its classical, and older than copyright law, so, that's a non issue. I just want a way to make this chore a little easier, short of telling my mom to do it herself.

• Map folder as drive permanently in Windows

  Lets say I need to map folder C:/D as drive D: One can use SUBST command to map folder as drive in Windows. SUBST d: C:/D I am absolutely happy how SUBST does the work. So I set this command as a startup task using the task manager. A problem here is that if I have a flash in a USB port while booting Windows, the flash is got mapped as D: and SUBST fails. The question is how to make C:/D to be D: permanently. So other drives (especially flash drives) don't break this during startup. P.S. I know I could set D: to be R: which is unlikely to conflict with other drives. But I would greatly appreciate another answer.

  Yeah, truly the whole question in the header. Is there a way to use Windows 7 offline sync (which we know from network mapped drives) with a external usb hd? When not, are there similar built in tools or good third party tools? My scenario: I want to buy a ultrabook with SSD which is mostly limited in space. So I'm going to put all files to a external HD and only store current projects on the local SSD. Let's say I have to change project. It would be easy just change sync folders and have the second project synced to my hd too. With network mapped drives it's such easy. Paths do not differ if the drive is offline so in most situations you don't take notice if the folder is offline. And you only have to activate offline file for the folders you courrently need for work. So is there a similar solution for usb hard drives?

  I am looking for a way to acomplish the following: Currently users have home drives mapped via AD profile as follow: \\fileserver\users\username However if once a user was able to access \\fileserver\users and view everyones folder, but had no access to them. This is not ideal since we have people saving important stuff to on their drives. How can I restrict users permissions and views only to THEIR home drives? I also saw this solution, but not sure if it would apply to me: ================================================================================ Share level permissions - Everyone full permission and remove all others On the file/folder level set the following: Authenticated users special permissions on the root of the \\server\homeshare\ to Check the boxes next to the following: Traverse folder / execute file List Folder / read data Read attributes Read extended attributes / List item All other boxed leave unchecked and make sure you apply "This Folder Only" Domain Adminsfull rights and apply “this folder, subfolders, and files” This will block the users from accessing other user home directories. When you create the new user and set the home directory it will create the folder for you with the correct permissions.

  The machine will store and serve millions of small files (<15Kb each), and all those files require a total storage space of 400G Considering the exact same SATA hard drives maker and models, on the exact same environment (OS, cpu, ram, raid controller, etc...) which one of the setups bellow would be faster? A) RAID 1 with 2 drives of 2T each, making up total storage of 2T B) RAID 10 with 4 drives of 2T each, making up total storage of 4T [EDIT]: I'm aware RAID10 is faster than RAID1. The larger the disk, at least in theory, the longer will take to do seeks/writes. So, will the performance gain of RAID10 will be outweighed by the "drag" caused the larger disk area when seek/write operations happened?

  I have been tasked to install Windows XP, IE, and Office 2007 on a computer that will become part of a standalone network not connected to the Internet. What is a good way to install all of the security updates? I'm installing from CD's of Windows XP SP2 and MS Office 2007. Next I plan to download Windows XP SP3 and Office 2007 SP2, burn them to CD's, and install both service packs. Finally I plan to go to the Microsoft Download Center and download all applicable security updates, burn then to CD, and install them. I estimate that there are over 100 of these updates. Is there a more efficient way to do this?

• Ubuntu 6.06 Boot problem

  I tried to boot my pc using ubuntu 6.06 in the live cd mode but it refuses to boot. It throws the error Uncompressing Linux.. ok, booting from kernel [ 54.168828] ACPI Unable to load the System Descriptor Tables The live cd works perfectly okay in other computers. Out of curiosity, I also tried to boot using Slax live cd, It too threw some errors incomplete literal tree invalid compressed format (err=1) UDF-fs: No partition found (1) XFS: bade magic number XFS: SB validate failed Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0) The slax errors are a bit worrying to me.   Yesterday I got a problem which I posted here. Trying to solve it, I installed slitaz live CD to desktop. After that I tried to use boot other live CD's (Ubuntu, Tiny core) but they didn't boot. So I deleted the the slitaz partition through gparted(or something like that) and restarted. After that I am seeing this error message:` GRUB Loading stage 1.5. Starting cmain() ... GRUB loading, please wait... Error 22` UPDATE: I have tried Backtrack live CD to live boot laptop but that doesn't work too.

  I recently began formatting a hard drive via USB extenal drive when the power went off. When i powered it up again and connected the drive the drives dont show up under my computer. When i go to disk management, i see the drive but now it says unallocated space. The drive was initialy partitioned into 2 drives. I cant see both drives now. Tried running GetDataBack NTFS recovery tool and it only comes up with errors. There seem to be no information on the drive from the data recovery utility. I know the information is there but how do i find it. HELP!!!!

• How to recover data from Dell dimension 9150 RAID 0 on another system?

  I have a Dell Dimension 9150 which has failed. I'm trying to recover the data. It had two SATA 250GB drives in RAID 0 configuration. I'm trying to use a shuttle PC running Windows7 to recover the data from the drives which contained an XP boot volume. I just want the data, it doesn't have to boot. What program would I need to rebuild / interrogate the drives (one of them is failing the onboard hardware test)? What drivers would I need to install? Windows7 sees the drive as one partition but doesn't see volume information. Ubuntu can see the drive as one partition and also can tell what the drive is called, but can't access the data Any help appreciated!! :)

  I have a few extra SSD drives (I know its rare but this has actually happened). I figured since I have almost 500 GB in SSD's I might as well replace all of my standard HDD's with them. I currently have a RAID 5 setup and enjoy the the speed and redundancy with 10k RPM drives. Should I bother to put my SSD's in RAID 5? I have not heard of anyone doing this and have no idea how it is going to work out. The loss of space doesn't really bother me since I have a 2 TB NAS with all my media on it. Does anyone have experience with putting solid state drives in a RAID 5. If RAID 5 is a bad idea has anyone had experience with a RAID 10? is it possible to stripe the SSD's and provide redundancy with standard HDD's?

  I have two 150GB SATA drives in hardware RAID 0, on which I have my C: (Win XP) and D: (installed apps). I'm migrating to Windows 7, but I want to keep my XP system until I've got it all running smoothly. So I want to: break the RAID move C: and D: to one of the drives (there's enough room) use the other drive for Win 7 boot into one or the other Clearly I can't move C: and D: after breaking the RAID, so I'm assuming I need to image the two partitions first, then break the RAID and restore the images to one of the drives. So my questions are: Is this possible? If so, what would be a good (free) imaging/restore tool? How do I ensure that the drive will boot after restoring the images? What sort of gotchas should I look out for? If there's a better solution than this, I'd be grateful for suggestions. Thanks!
