• Javascript Only Search Method [on hold]

  I need to put a search function on a website that is going to be on a CD-ROM with no access to the internet. It has 80 pages, and about 500 'items', so I'd prefer to not have to hard code 100's of 'if statements if possible. I've found a few programs you can buy that will index and generate results (Zoom Search, JSS Index, The German Guys') but there are odd quirks with each one. Plus I would rather code it myself to get complete control over it, and to really understand what it's doing. Basically searching for a few words would display the product image and description; clicking on that would take you the related URL. This is kind of complicated, I can't find an easy solution not dealing with hundreds of if Statements. Has anyone ever created anything like this or know a better method? I'm not really sure a better way to go about this. I've used PHP/MYSQL for search results before, but this cannot run any php.

  I have Deepin linux installed and now I need to install ubuntu. I don't have CD ROM , so I thought I can use GRUB2 ISO boot option. I have used the link Install Ubuntu from iso file using grub2 to boot ISO using GRUB2. I need to install the operating system. When I click Install Ubuntu icon in desktop, the installer starts. But I can't see the option where we can specify the partition. It just directly goes to installing. Even if I click install, the installer does nothing and the installation didn't start. What to do? Any ideas?

• Can't install ubuntu along windows 7

  I boot from a DVD the last version of ubuntu 12.04 x64(because i have 8g. of ram) ,hit install Ubuntu ,check Install Along windwos 7(or something like this ,anyway the first option) and the button in the bottom right corner says "Restart to install" or just restart...i cant remember. So ,i hit the button than ,the screen goes black ,some proceses are stopped and on the middle of the screen it writes like this " Please remove installation media and close the tray (if any) then press ENTER: " The DVD rom opens and i remove the dvd ,close the tray ,pushing enter and the windows is starting ,no instalation ,no file copied to my PC ,nothing.

• Get and install Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS driver

  Recently, I changed my OS kernel from 10.04 to 11.10 (bugs), but after doing it, the video driver for the 8400 GS disappeared (was there in 10.04). I worked out the same procedure I did to install it in 10.04, mainly, sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-current sudo apt-get --purge autoremove sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get -y install nvidia-current but it didn't work even though the commands seemed to install the driver without problems. • Question regarding drives

  I am a new Ubuntu user who has spent a lot of time on Windows. A very common practice for me on Windows was making two drives, C: and D: , storing installs/files in C:, and I used D: for backup or if I downloaded something that I wanted to save, I saved in D: When installing Ubuntu, it asked me if I wanted to replace Windows 7. I thought it would install Ubuntu on C: but instead it used the whole partition, nevertheless I recovered my backup using testdisk. What I wanted to do was to create a similar backup drive on Linux too. My current partition table: sda 8:0 0 232.9G 0 disk +-sda1 8:1 0 230.9G 0 part / +-sda2 8:2 0 1K 0 part +-sda5 8:5 0 2G 0 part [SWAP] sr0 11:0 1 1024M 0 rom So should I use Gparted to create another sda3 and store my important data on that? Also my current sda2 is listed as an extended partition, should I delete it? It's a very small partition, just 1K.

• Recommended Linux distro to boot into RAM (from USB flash drive)?

  I don't mind if I use USB flash drive or CD-ROM, but I would prefer USB flash drive. I had a squizz at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_distributions_that_run_from_RAM On my own computer, I would be able to use any of the distros in the list. The largest "RAM required" in the list is 4GB. I would like to be able to use it on any computer, so I suppose 1GB or less would be better. I tried to follow the method described on Distro that I can load into RAM? but the distro listed there, from Israel Remix Team, doesn't seem to be available. Before I start trial-and-error on different distros, does anyone have any recommendations?

• GRUB prompt at boot after boot-repair

  I tried installing Ubuntu 12.04 from the live CD. The install went fine but i had the next error while booting : Grub stage 1.5 error 2. So I used boot-repair as explained here (http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/boot-repair). Still not working, i got this while booting : "GNU GRUB version 1.99-21ubuntu3 Minimal bash-like line editing is supported. Etc...". Nothing more... • Dual display setup - only one displayed after logon

  During boot process my desktop shows both Monitors, but after log I only get one. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 When I go into Displays its still only shows on Monitor.   i am a long time user of Ubuntu and this is the first time a such thing happens to me. I usually upgrade from a version to an other, but this time i wish to do a clean install. I want to totally remove my 12.04 and do a clean install of 12.10, i created a live USB then i restarted my computer to boot from USB, i got the following error: Product is covered by one or more of the following patents: US5,434,872, US5,732,894, (and many more) Under that i see: PCIe GBE Family Controller Series v2.38 Media test failiure Exiting PXE ROM And then it reboots I've searched a lot for an answer, i guess the problem is with something in my bios, but i didn't find a fix. • Ubuntu 11.10 boot: xhost: unable to open display

  I've had this papercut for a while now, it's time it was fixed. When I boot up Ubuntu, choosing "Ubuntu...generic" from the grub screen, Ubuntu fails to load. It just sits at the driver/module loading screen. What seems to be the most significant line in this output is "xhost: unable to open display" If I choose "Ubuntu...(recovery mode)" from grub then it loads OK. I don't get why this is. Out of interest I tried enabling boot error logging with #/etc/default/bootlogd BOOTLOGD_ENABLE=Yes but I'm not seeing anything in that file. ETA: I've had this problem since fresh install of 11.10. • Bash/shell script - shell output redirection inside a function

  function grabSourceFile { cd /tmp/lmpsource wget $1 > $LOG baseName=$(basename $1) tar -xvf $baseName > $LOG cd $baseName } When I call this function The captured output is not going to the log file. The output redirection works fine until I call the function. The $LOG variable is set at the top of the file. I tried echoing statements and they would not print. I am guessing the function captures the output itself? If so how do push the output to the file instead of the console. (The wget above prints to console, while an echo inside the function does nothing.)

• Change present working directory of a calling shell from a ruby script

  I'm writing a simple ruby sandbox command-line utility to copy and unzip directories from a remote filesystem to a local scratch directory in order to unzip them and let users edit the files. I'm using Dir.mktmpdir as the default scratch directory, which gives a really ugly path (for example: /var/folders/zz/zzzivhrRnAmviuee+++1vE+++yo/-Tmp-/d20100311-70034-abz5zj) I'd like the last action of the copy-and-unzip script to cd the calling shell into the new scratch directory so people can access it easily, but I can't figure out how to change the PWD of the calling shell. One possibility is to have the utility print out the new path to stdout and then run the script as part of a subshell (i.e. cd $(sandbox my_dir) ), but I want to print out progress on the copy-and-unzipping since it can take up to 10 minutes, so this won't work. Should I just have it go to a pre-determined, easy-to-find scratch directory? Does anyone have a better suggestion? Thanks in advance for your help. -Erik

  Hi everyone, I'm searching for an algorithm to calculate the average distance between a point and a line segment in 3D. So given two points A(x1, y1, z1) and B(x2, y2, z2) that represent line segment AB, and a third point C(x3, y3, z3), what is the average distance between each point on AB to point C? I'm also interested in the average distance between two line segments. So given segment AB and CD, what is the average distance from each point on AB to the closest point on CD? I haven't had any luck with the web searches I've tried, so any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
