• Ubuntu 12.04 "Do nothing" when "lid closed" blanks out external monitor

  This is not the same as this question. I have Ubuntu 12.04 running with an Nvidia card on a W510 Thinkpad. I have one external monitor connected. When I change the power settings to "Do nothing" when "Lid closed" it still keeps the system running which is great. However, it blanks out the display on any external monitors making the system useless. I plan on getting a dock soon and having to identical resolution monitors and would love to be able to dock the monitor and work as normal on the external monitors. Does anyone have a suggestion or fix for this? Should I report this as a bug or feature request?

• Recover files from a SATA drive from USB

  I've damaged the drive I had in my windows laptop and now I want to try to recover as many files as possible. I know very little about linux though. I have Ubuntu 10.04. I have a docking station for the drive and it is connected to my linux machine. The drive appears in disk utility. Unfortunately, this is where I have no idea where to proceed. Any help is appreciated and I can provide more info if needed.

But my site SEO rank was very very... bad especially on Google. So then I removed the rel="nofollow" tag, but no improvement. The only difference between this site and my other sites is "External links". My other sites have good ranking on Google. Now I'm creating a site for reviews.   Problem: MacBook hard drive crashed and is ruined. I need to work on a music assignment on a program only available for Mac OS X and Ubuntu, and will not be able to get a new hard drive for the Mac before the assignment is due. I only have non-administrator access to Windows XP and 7 computers. Can I make a USB drive with Ubuntu on it so I can use my MacBook with this? Can I create this from a Windows computer? To say the least, I'm thoroughly confused as what are the best practices for managing internal and external links. Here is a list of some of my questions: Which internal links should be set to "nofollow"? Which external links should be set to "nofollow"? To what degree does actively managing links contribute to your PR? Should you use "nofollow" blindly on all links in comments? • Can't find my DVD drive in Ubuntu 12.04

  I am completely new to Linux, due to some problems in my Windows I decided to give Linux a try. I am quite liking it accept for some minor issues. The biggest of them is that I cannot find my DVD drive in Ubuntu. After I insert the disk, the drive's green light flickers and then nothing. I don't get anything on my unity bar or desktop. There is no folder inside my /dev folder which indicates a dvd drive. There is a cdrom folder in my root folder but nothing is there. If you guys know what's wrong, I'd appreciate the help. Am a complete newbie so don't expect me to know anything about Ubuntu, although I have spent lots of hours in last 2 days googling my issue so I have basic information...

• How to backup a NAS drive to a USB drive?

  How would you backup 600+ GB of data on a NAS (Network-Attached Storage) drive to a USB external drive? The NAS drive does not contain mission critical data nonetheless I wish to make weekly copies of it just in case. The NAS drive is almost exclusively used as an archive dump and is rarely updated. However the backup strategy used must have a simple restore procedure so I can confidently say the data now on the NAS drive is exactly how it was at the time of backup. I did try xcopy but seemed like it would take many-many hours and eventually crashed with insufficient memory. http://www.ctunion.com/node/114 suggests I would need to use xxcopy instead due to folder/file name lengths. My concern with xcopy/xxcopy is the length of time it takes. Hoping something else is faster. NAS drive is DLink DNS-313. 1TB drive installed. Connected to router via Ethernet cable. USB drive is Seagate 1TB. Can be connected to Windows Vista (preferred) or Windows 7 PCs. Both PCs are usually connected Wirelessly however ethernet cable can be used during backup to speed up the process.

  Please please help! I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate on same hard drive on D Drive on my laptop and the previous Windows 7 Enterprise which was installed on C Drive is not booting up now. When I turn on my laptop, I see two Windows 7 on the screen, when I select newer one, it starts, but when I select older one which is Enterprise edition, system won't start and I get the DOS black screen with this error message: Windows Boot Manager Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next." Click "repair your computer." Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible. I notice that when I run the newer OS installed, the previous OS's drive (Which is D: now instead of C:) has become unusable and when I double click it, it asks me to format the drive. The data, that I had on my D Drive (Which is now C Drive for new OS), I had copied it to a network path and it is available. It was containing Windows 7 Users folder which I copied at that time when installing new windows. I have copied that Users folder again to the new OS's C Drive thinking it would run again, but of no use. Please please please...if someone can help...It is extremely required for me. • Windows Server 2003 - Handling hundreds of simultaneous downloads

  At the moment I have a single server with 4 1TB hard disks, daily I haver over 150 MP3 music files uploaded (around 80mb each). At busy periods there is over 300 people streaming / downloading these mixes all at once, 75% of the activity is on the most recently uploaded stuff which is all on a single hard disk. My read speads on the hard disk are very low due to such high activity of 200+ reads all happening at the same time on a single hard disk (ran some tests with HDTach). What would be a logical solution to solve this, a couple of ideas I had are: Load balance with another server Install faster hard disks (what are best these days? SCSI / SATA) Spread the most accessed files over the 4 drives so it is sharing the load between all 4 disks, instead of all the most accessed (most recent) all on the most recently installed drive. Obviouslly load balance is the most expensive option, but would it dramatically help? Some help on this situation would be great!

• Why does my ReadyNas 4200 have a constant beep post disk failure

  Went to check on a high pitched constant beep coming from the server room and discovered that all the LED lights on the disks were black except one which had a constant green. Post a Re-boot nothing changed. Console indicated that that particular drive has failed. Pulled the drive out and BAM everything is fine. Except, the high pitched beep remains. Plan is currently to replace the drive with a new same size drive we happen to have purchased for expansion. My question is, what will this do? Will the NAS accept the new drive as a replacement for the failed one and decide to shut-up? • Immutable hard links on ext3/4?

  In my research on file versioning at the fs level, snapshotting, and related ideas, I took a look at hard-links and exactly what they are and how they behave. Using rsync you can get a pretty slick poor man's snapshotting system up and running on file systems that don't natively support it. But, can you get immutable hard links on ext3/4 or any other file systems for that matter? My definition for immutable hard link is: A hard link which, when changed on one location, becomes a regular copy and no longer a hard link. I would like this because it would enable snapshotting use of the source data to link against instead of a copy of the data (in the case of the rsync snapshotting technique). I have gigabytes of data that can't be duplicated due to space restrictions but I have enough room if I can intelligently snapshot individual changed files with the rest linked to the source not a copy. Given all that, is there some other technique, feature or technology I'm really looking for?

  Hi, History of problem: I formated computer (HP Pavalion Desktop). When I restart computer - computer come to first screen before boot and not response to any signals (f2, f10, ESC, etc..) I take out motherboad battery return after time back and power computer - result : as before I disconnect wires of hard-disk and insert livecd UBUNTU to cd and power coputer: result: works without hard-disk. What is the root of problem: hard-disk broken? hard-disk wires not working well? BIOS? other reason How can I fix the problem?(Buy new hard disk etc...) Thanks, Yosef

  Yes, I know somewhat about the possibility of data corruption if there was data that hadn't been all written to it. But I just saw this: Note:If u remove HDD(not USB sticks) without safely removing it,its not healthy and will affect life. So, if nothing is actually writing to it, could there actually be any harm caused by not safely removing or unmounting it before disconnecting it?

  I have a (semi)-dead hard drive with an HP recovery partition on it. My goal is to Buy a new hard drive Copy the recovery partition to a drive ( dd if=/dev/sdb1 of=~/recovery.bak ) Make a new partition of 12000 mb with Windows 7 Copy back recovery partition to the new drive ( dd if=~/recovery.bak of=/dev/sdb1 ) Then press F11 when the laptop boots. However, this doesn't work. Any idea why? Edit: I suspect the F11 doesn't work because the laptop tries to boot the laptop, because my partition is the primary partition of the drive. Does anyone have any experience dealing with stuff like this?

• Windows 8 Restore Problems

  I created a Windows 8 system image backup on a separate drive before I installed Linux, and during the Linux installation process I accidentally wiped out Windows. I now want to restore my Windows 8 backup that I have on the separate drive. I created a repair USB stick and I followed the directions according to this article. After selecting the image on the hard drive, I get this error: "To restore this computer, Windows needs to format the hard drive." I don't know what this means! The drive partitions are different now then they were when I backup up, so I don't know if that matters. I re-installed Windows and I can restore my files from this backup, but I don't think this covers the registry, etc. I want a full restore. Does anyone know how to fix this problem, or how to restore in a different way? Thanks!

• 3½" PATA Western Digital Caviar SE (250MB) makes steady ticking sound when idle

  I've started to notice a ticking sound emanating from my WD2500JB. It is not alarmingly loud. The sound seems to occur only when the drive has been idle for some time, and will cease upon (some?) disk activity. The sound has a regular, steady cadence of somewhere between about 4 and 6 ticks per second. I'm not entirely certain that it just started making these sounds, since I previously had the drive — mounted in a USB enclosure — stored out of earshot, and only recently moved it to where I can hear it. The SMART attributes for the drive do not indicate any problems. I did have some errors to clean up recently (since I started noticing the sounds). The errors occurred on an ext3 filesystem. The drive had been powered down while mounted a few times prior to that fsck. Is this cause for alarm? Should I scrap the drive on principle?

• 3 TB HDD won't reactivate

  After doing a clean install of Windows 8 my Seagate 3 TB HDD won't reactivate in Disk Management. The two volumes are there but I can't use them for some reason. The drive was previously used with a GPT partition table, I can see the two spanned volumes but can't reactivate either. I backed up all my files from Windows 7 onto that drive and desperately need them back. What can and should I do to get the drive back up and running? When I go to Disk → Properties → Volumes, it claims the drive has a MBR partition style, so converting to GPT somehow without data loss should work. gDisk claims to be able to do that but when I point it to the drive, it claims that it has a GPT partition and a protected MBR partition. Any suggestions on what to do?

• How to increase virtual hard drive space

  I have a Microsoft Virutal PC hard drive (.vhd format) that's maxed out it's 16 gig hard drive space. What would be the best way to increase this diskspace? Booting into the machine (windows xp professional) and using the disk management snap in, I can see that the virtual drive has approximately 40 more unused gigs of space. Trying to use diskpart, I find out that Windows XP can't extend the boot partition. So I'm at an empass, any suggestions on how to increase the partion or to increase the actual virtual hard drive would be great. Note: The virtual hard drive is running on Windows 7 using XP mode.

  I accidentally formatted my Drive D that contained all my Backups and Documents. I separated my files to my Drive D hoping I will not harm my files. Since I use Acronis Recovery to Install a new OS with some pre-installed application to my HDD I didn't realize I also formated/erase my Drive D. Now my drive D is unpartitioned. I am really in really in deep trouble and would need some urgent help, Please recommend a Software that at least can restore my Old Drive that contained my files. I'm assuming most of you think this is a duplicate of some old questions here, But I'm not looking for data recovery, I need to recover the whole partition with the files. I used to use "Recuva" but It only recovers files not the whole folders with the files in it. Please advice. Thank You!

• formating a hard drive for use in an asus aspire one d250

  I have an Asus Aspire One D250 that's out of warranty and whose hard drive is giving the click of death. I'm trying to use a spare SATA HDD I have but am having some difficulty. I have a USB CD drive that I plugged into the computer but when I tried to boot off of a Windows XP SP3 install CD the hard drive wasn't recognized. I tried to format the hard drive in another computer and then plug the hard drive into the Asus Aspire and although this gets me to the Windows XP loading screen it crashes before it gets into Windows, itself. Even in Safe Mode. I also tried to install Windows XP off of a USB stick but it seemed to hang during the install process. As in the next day it was still in the blue screen installer. Any ideas?

  I'm having a two WD external hard disk with capacity of 1 TB. I'm trying to copy SAP file(capacity - 250 GB ) in the extension of .vmdk from one hard disk to another hard disk. But when ever i'm trying to copy, at down to the line it showing me this error message. By default my both hard disk File System value is NFTS, even though it showing me an this error message. • Will installing an Ultra ATA cable backwards affect performance?

  I've recently purchased a hard drive upgrade for my Xbox 320GB WD Caviar Blue WD3200AAJB and StarTech.com Ultra ATA/66/100/133 cable IDE66 yes I'm crazy When it came to installing the cable, it was too short (my fault), and there wasn't enough space between the master and slave ends to reach both the DVD drive and the hard drive. The only thing I could do was install the cable backwards and twisting it quite a bit to make it fit. The upgrade works, but reading the manual for the hard drive I replaced (10GB Seagate U Series 5), apparently there is a specific way you have to connect the cable. I don't have that option, so the question comes down to, will my drive performance be at Ultra ATA levels, or is it still performing at original ATA speeds? Is there any way I can test this (benchmarking software for Xbox)?
