  • Debugging instance of another thread altering my data

    I have a huge global array of structures. Some regions of the array are tied to individual threads and those threads can modify their regions of the array without having to use critical sections. But there is one special region of the array which all threads may have access to. The code that accesses these parts of the array needs to carefully use critical sections (each array element has its own critical section) to prevent any possibility of two threads writing to the structure simultaneously. Now I have a mysterious bug I am trying to chase, it is occurring unpredictably and very infrequently. It seems that one of the structures is being filled with some incorrect number. One obvious explanation is that another thread has accidentally been allowed to set this number when it should be excluded from doing so. Unfortunately it seems close to impossible to track this bug. The array element in which the bad data appears is different each time. What I would love to be able to do is set some kind of trap for the bug as follows: I would enter a critical section for array element N, then I know that no other thread should be able to touch the data, then (until I exit the critical section) set some kind of flag to a debugging tool saying "if any other thread attempts to change the data here please break and show me the offending patch of source code"... but I suspect no such tool exists... or does it? Or is there some completely different debugging methodology that I should be employing.

  • Best way to test instance methods without running __init__

    I've got a simple class that gets most of its arguments via init, which also runs a variety of private methods that do most of the work. Output is available either through access to object variables or public methods. Here's the problem - I'd like my unittest framework to directly call the private methods called by init with different data - without going through init. What's the best way to do this? So far, I've been refactoring these classes so that init does less and data is passed in separately. This makes testing easy, but I think the usability of the class suffers a little.     Suppose, I want to record say poll choices by users everyday. In this case, i have a table named vote which has columns poll , choice and user-id . So how can i out the constraint (maybe in the django models or wherever possible) that poll and user-id both should not be the same for any entry but like the same user can vote for various different polls once and obviously various users can vote for the same poll.     I am already using output caching in my ASP.NET MVC application. Page speed tells me to specify HTTP cache expiration for css and images in the response header. I know that the Response object contains some properties that control cache expiration. I know that these properties can be used to control HTTP caching for response that I am serving from my code: Response.Expires Response.ExpiresAbsolute Response.CacheControl or alternatively Response.AddHeader("Expires", "Thu, 01 Dec 1994 16:00:00 GMT"); The question is how do I set the Expires header for resources that are served automatically, e.g. images, css and such?

    I can't think of any reasons why one is better than the other. Compare these two implementations: public class MyClass { public myClass(string fileName) { // some code... } } as opposed to: public class MyClass { private myClass(){} public static Create(string fileName) { // some code... } } There are some places in the .Net framework that use the static method to create instances. At first I was thinking, it registers it's instances to keep track of them, but regular constructors could do the same thing through the use of private static variables. What is the reasoning behind this style?

    I'm trying to find a way to handle several bitfield cases that include optional, required, and not allowed positions. yy?nnn?y 11000001 ?yyy?nnn 01110000 nn?yyy?n 00011100 ?nnn?yyy 00000111 In these four cases, the ? indicates that the bit can be either 1 or 0 while y indicates a 1 is required and n indicates that a 0 is required. The bits to the left/right of the required bits can be anything and the remaining bits must be 0. Is there a masking method I can use to test if an input bit set satisfies one of these cases?

  • Populate table fields on query execution

    I'm trying to build an ASP site that populates a Table based on the results of a selection in a ListBox. In order to do this, I've created a GridView table inside a div element. Currently the default behavior is to show all the items in the specified table in sortable order. However, I'd like to refine this further to allow for display of matches based on the results from the ListBox selection, but am not sure how to execute this.   • Ideal HTTP cache control headers for different types of resources

    I want to find a minimal set of headers, that work with "all" caches and browsers (also when using HTTPS!) On my (GWT-based) web site, I'll have three kinds of resources: 1. Forever cacheable (public / equal for all users) These files don't ever change, and they get a filename based on the MD5 of their contents (this is GWT's approach). They should get cached as much as possible, even when using HTTPS (so I assume, I should set Cache-Control: public, especially for Firefox?) 2. Changing for every new version of the site (public / equal for all users) These files can be cached, but probably need to be revalidated every time. 3. Individual for each request (private / user specific) These resources (e. g. JSON responses) should never be cached unencrypted to disk under no circumstances. (Maybe I'll have a few specific requests that could be cached.) I have a general idea on which headers I would probably use for each type, but there's always something I could be missing.

Are there any pitfalls to be aware of?     I have a list: list<Unit *> UnitCollection; containing Unit objects, which has an accessor like: bool Unit::isUnit(string uCode) { if(this->unitCode == uCode) return true; else return false; } How do I search my UnitCollection list by uCode and return the corresponding element (preferably it's index). I have looked at the find() method, but i'm not sure you can pass a boolean method in instead of a searched item parameter if that makes sense.

" GMT"); Will this make sure the browser will not send another conditional GET request (nor any request) until $offset time has "run out"? Also, what about other headers? Should I send headers like this together with the 304: header('Content-Type: text/html'); Do I have to send: header("Last-Modified:" . $modified); header('Etag: ' . $etag); To make sure the browser sends a conditional GET request the next time the $offset has "run out" or does it simply save the old Last Modified and Etag values? Are there other things I should be aware about when sending a 304 response header?

  • SQL Query to separate data into two fields

    I have data in one column that I want to separate into two columns. The data is separated by a comma if present. This field can have no data, only one set of data or two sets of data saperated by the comma. Currently I pull the data and save as a comma delimited file then use an FoxPro to load the data into a table then process the data as needed then I re-insert the data back into a different SQL table for my use. I would like to drop the FoxPro portion and have the SQL query saperate the data for me. Below is a sample of what the data looks like. Store Amount Discount 1 5.95 1 5.95 PO^-479^2 1 5.95 PO^-479^2 2 5.95 2 5.95 PO^-479^2 2 5.95 +CA8A09^-240^4,CORDRC^-239^7 3 5.95 3 5.95 +CA8A09^-240^4,CORDRC^-239^7 3 5.95 +CA8A09^-240^4,CORDRC^-239^7 In the data above I want to sum the data in the amount field to get a gross amount. Then pull out the specific discount amount which is located between the carat characters and sum it to get the total discount amount. Then add the two together and get the total net amount. The query I want to write will separate the discount field as needed, see store 2 line 3 for two discounts being applied, then pull out the value between carat characters.
