• Do these 3 crashes have something in common?

  I'm running OS X 10.6.8 on a Mac Mini. I tried to install 3 applications today and all 3 installations failed. I am wondering if the failures have something in common. First I installed GraphViz. The installation succeeded, but when I try to open any .dot file, I get a dialog that says GraphViz has quit unexpectedly. Next I installed Doxygen. It installed, but when I try to launch it I get a dialog that tells me Doxywizard quit unexpectedly. After some googling I thought perhaps my system lacked QT, and that was the problem. I downloaded the Qt 4.8.4 packages and installed them. But when I try to launch qtdemo.app, or any of the other apps that came with the qt installation, I get a dialog that says I can't open the app because it's not supported on this type of Mac. I have crash logs from GraphViz and Doxygen. They're long and I think it unnecessary to post them unless they would help someone determine my problem. • Remote access not working without connected monitor

  I am trying to configure a Windows Server 2008 as a Home Server for my personal use (mainly for storing documents, hosting source-control, etc.). The "server" consists of an Intel Atom 2700DC board and an Intel SSD. Configuring remote access to the server, I am confronted with a very strange problem: As long as a monitor is connected to my server, remote access works without any problems. However, when no monitor is connected at boot-time, remote access simply won't work (I keep getting errors when trying to connect that the remote server was not found or that remote access is disabled). Windows definitely boots when no monitor is connected as I receive a message asking me whether to enter safe mode when booting after powering the server down by plugging the power cord. When I plug in a monitor after boot, it stays turned off and remote desktop connections still fail. Do you have any ideas about what I could try?

• Windows 7 Bootcamp to see data doubler SATA SSD in Optical Bay Connector

  Hi I purchased a OWC data doubler http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DDAMBS0GB/ ... Long story short it lets you add a second HD to your macbook pro in place of the cd/dvd drive (which is useless anyway, impossible to get stuff out when stuck). My current setup is 600gb intel SSD bootdrive 100gb partition for OSX / 500gb for Windows 7 Prof from Bootcamp (use 99 % of time). My desire is to have a second 300gb SSD to run disk intensive VM's off of. So I added a second 300gb intel SSD (again, NO desire to boot off of) on the sata optical port. I can see the drive no problem if I boot in to OSX, however, can't see it in disk management on Win7 ??? Any ideas similar experience ... Funny thing is I can see it in "Device Manager Disk Drivers" but not Disk Management ??? Also no I don't want to use Fusion/Parallels this is a waste of resources for me.

  So I recently made some purchases for a new computer including: Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R CPU : Intel Core2Quad 2.66Ghz Power Supply: Antec Basiq 500w UPDATE: I got the Power Supply working, the motherboard's lights come on, the video card fan spins, BUT the CPU fan does NOT spin and there is no video. Whats the possibility of lacking power? In the mobo guide it says the use of a power supply providing a 2x4 12V connector is recommended (I do not have this connector) by the CPU manufacturer when using an Intel Extreme Edition (I'm using Core2Quad) UPDATE: Got it working, intstalling windows 7 now. • Random Computer Crashes

  Ok, here's a wierd one for you all. Occasionally my PC here at work will crash in a very peculiar way. My dual monitors will suddenly go blank as if there is no longer a video signal, the USB mouse light will go dark and mouse stays unresponsive, the keyboard lights will not change status when the appropriate keys are pressed (Num/Caps/Scoll Lock). The CD Tray WILL open and close. But the computer will not respond to a ping request. For all intents & purposes it's as if the computer is off, except it wasn't intentional by me. The power light and internal fans are still on and I've now lost any unsaved work. Now here's where it gets wierd. This PC is part of a batch of PC's we got from a local vendor who does our initial system builds. Mine, and 6 other co-workers PCs all have the same issue. Originally we thought it was a bad combination of hardware, but through trial and error the only thing we haven't eliminated are the OS, Mobo & CPU. The problem was so bad for some of them that they ended up going back to their 5 year old dinosaurs in order to get some work done, for me the problem isn't as bad, maybe once every other day or so, but still enough to bite me in the ass if I've forgotten my ritualistic pressing of CTRL-S every 1-5 minutes. In this case we've tried two different video cards, two different power supplies, two different memory configurations, running on a UPS/not on UPS, updating/rolling back video drivers, three different bios revisions. The only things we haven't swapped are the mobo & cpu, mainly because a new mobo means a new Hardware Abstraction Layer, ie re-install of windows and there's alot of other software on this PC that takes forever to reload by hand. There was a base image that our systems team created with all the drivers installed and the basic setup of software our company uses, but they then must customize the setup for us programmers so it takes a while to get a new configuration up and going. I'm a programmer by day and am usually pretty good at diagnosing computer problems whether through trial and error or not. We've pretty much exhausted all the ideas we can think of here, short of a new mobo/cpu. Was hoping someone out there might have anything else we can try.. Relevant Parts: OS: XP Pro 32-bit Motherboard: Intel DG41RQ CPU: Intel Core-2 Quad Q9400 @ 2.66GHz Current BIOS Version/Date Intel Corp. • Windows 8, NVIDIA graphics recognition fails

  I just installed Windows 8 Pro OEM 64-bit (clean install) and it won't properly recognize my graphics adapter. When I installed Win8, it automatically installed the BasicDisplay.sys driver dated 6/21/2006. 6.2.9200.16384 (win8_rtm.120725-1247). Hardware - Mobo:MSi G41M-P33 Combo CPU:Intel CoreDuo 6600 Graphics:NVIDIA GeForce 9400GT *OS* - Windows 8 Pro 64-bit OEM The graphics adapter worked fine in Windows XP. The PC is a generic box, bought locally and its mobo failed recently, so I replaced it with the G41M. Microsoft wouldn't let me re-activate Windows XP with a different mobo, so I installed Win8, which appears to work except as described next. Win8 only partially recognizes the graphics adapter and won't allow NVIDIA latest driver installer to see that it's an NVIDIA card. As a result, OpenGL doesn't work, and this is needed by the software I most use. Other than that the graphics look OK. When I say 'partially recognizes', I mean that via the Control Panel, I can see that the adapter is described as NVIDIA, but the driver remains stuck at Microsoft Basic Display Adapter no matter what I try, including "Update driver..." in adapter properties. Display Screen Resolution Advanced Settings Adapter shows: Adapter Type: Microsoft Basic Display Adapter Chip Type: NVIDIA DAC Type: NVIDIA Corporation Bios Information: G27 Board - p381n17 Don't know what this means ... no mention of 9400GT Total Available Graphics Memory: 256 MB Dedicated Video Memory: 0 MB In fact the adapter has 512MB on-board video memory. System Video Memory: 0 MB Shared System Memory: 256 MB And Control Panel Device Manager Display adapters just shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. No other graphics adapter, and no unknown device or yellow question mark. What I have tried so far: 1. Cleared CMOS and reset. Updated BIOS and all mobo drivers as follows: 1st I used Driver Reviver to see if any driver updates were required. It found some but I didn't use that to get the drivers. Then I switched to MSi's own mobo driver utility Live Update 5. This also showed the board needed to update several so I used it to fetch the new drivers. After that it showed that everything was up to date and I checked with Driver Reviver again, which also reported no drivers now needed updating. Rebooted. Went to the NVIDIA site to get the latest graphics adapter driver. Their auto-detect "Option 2: Automatically find drivers for my NVIDIA products" said "The NVIDIA Smart Scan was unable to evaluate your system hardware. Please use Option 1 to manually find drivers for your NVIDIA products." So I downloaded 310.70-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql.exe, which lists 9400 GT under supported products, but when I run it, it says: "NVIDIA Installer cannot continue This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware." Connected the display to the on-board Intel graphics (G41 Intel Express), removed the NVIDIA card and rebooted, changed to internal graphics in CMOS. Again it installs the MS Basic Display Adapter, and can't properly run my s/w that needs OpenGL. It runs on other machines with Intel Express graphics (WinXP and 7) Shut down and pulled out the power cord. Held start button to discharge all capacitors. Removed and re-inserted NVIDIA adapter in PCI-E slot and made sure properly seated. Connected the monitor to the card, screwed plug to socket. Reconnected power cord. Started and checked in BIOS that Primary Graphics Adapter was set to PCI-E. Started Windows. Uninstalled MS Basic Display Adapter in Device Manager. Screen blanks briefly, reappears. No Graphics adapter entry was then visible in Device Manager. Restarted PC. MS Basic Display Adapter Visible again in Device Manager. Clicked in Device Manager View Show hidden devices. No other graphics adapter appears, no unknown devices. Rebooted. Tried Scan for Hardware changes. None detected. Tried right-click on MS Basic Display Adapter Properties Driver Update Driver... Search automatically. It replied that it had determined driver was up to date. I checked that there were no graphic driver-related entries in Programs and Features that I could delete (none). Searched for any other drivers with nvidia in their name and deleted them, just keeping the 306.97 installer exe file. Did a Windows Update. Ran GPU-Z which shows (main items): Microsoft Basic Display Adapter GPU G72 BIOS 5.72.22.76.88 Device ID 10DE - 01D5 DDR2 Bus Width 32 Bit Memory size 64MB Driver Version nvlddmkm 6.2.9200.16384 (ForceWare 0.00) / Win8 64 NVIDIA SLI Unknown in the drop-down at the foot, "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" is the only option If I swap hard disks in that machine to one with a Ubuntu 10.4 installation (originally installed on the same PC), lspci shows "VGA compatible controller as NVIDIA Corporation Device 01d5 (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])" and "kernel driver in use: nvidia" I'm out of ideas for new things to try and would be really grateful of suggestions. • Setting up 2 external monitors on a laptop with VGA splitter

  I have a laptop with a graphics card that supports 2 displays. I would like to know the easiest way to set it up so I can close my laptop lid and use 2 external monitors (unique displays). I use it primarily for office applications and video and want a quality, clear picture. The laptop has 1 VGA port and I have 2 24" 1920x1200 monitors that have VGA and DVI ports. So a few questions: Can I just use a VGA splitter? (seen mixed feedback on this) Would it a VGA to 2 DVI splitter give a better picture quality? (if it exists) Would I be better upgrading laptop to one with 2 digital ports ( I just see a lot with VGA and HDMI though) specs: Model: Toshiba Satellite C675-S106 (Windows 7) Graphics Card: Intel HD Graphics 3000 (supports 2 displays) Processor: Intel Core i3-2350M

• Can I fully disable my PCIe Video/Graphics Card per BIOS/Software?

  Because of a quite noisy fan of my HD6700 I was wondering, if I could fully disable my video card through BIOS or even some Software/Windows. Switching to Intel I7 2600 internal video helped already with the noise, but it would be great to have the HD6700 only build in, but not activated/powered. So that the fan could stay compleatly off. Of course, I could just remove the video card, but I would like to avoid that. Is there any way? My Mainboard is an ASUS P8H67-M Pro, with Intel I7 2600 and ATI HD6500

• Suspected power supply issue? PC repeatedly whirs for some seconds and then dies.

  I've come home today and switched on the PC I've built a few months ago only for the machine to whir for a few short seconds and then die. It repeats this until I disconnect the power lead. Nothing is output to the screen and this cut out happens very quickly after switching it on. What could this be and how could it be fixed? Is it the power supply? I'm in despair :-( My spec is below, everything is new and was bought and assembled within the last 6months, system has been fantastic until now. • What version of Ubuntu to use for Desktop with 8Gb RAM?

  This may sound as a stupid question, but I am really interested whether Ubuntu Desktop i386 will be able to use all my available RAM. I want to use the latest, non-LTS version, 10.10. It says on the website that it's (i386) the Recommended version. I also recall that Flash Player had issues with 64 bit Linux. Also, the 64 bit version is listed in the Universal USB Installer as amd64. Does this mean that it's using instruction sets specific to AMD CPUs? (I have an Intel) Will it work fine with Intel? So which one to download and install? What to do to be able to use 8Gb of RAM?

• VGA resolution with Sony Bravia TV

  I just bought Sony Bravia KDL40S5100 tv. The VGA input is acting weird. I have a Gateway desktop with Windows 7 and Intel 945 graphics. I also have a laptop running Ubuntu 9.04. The TV will not display the gateway when the resolution is over 1360x768, I have to wait for it to time out and bring me back. The Intel driver even urges me to switch to the "recommended" 1920x1080. I just installed Win7 using this tv as the monitor. When the orginial welcome screen started after setup, it started me at 1080. I had to start in safemode to set a res that would work! When I plug my laptop into the TV, 1920x1080 works just fine. Any ideas? This laptop also has Win7, which I am going to try, but I haven't gotten a chance yet.

If it matters my system is like this: Archlinux Linux 2.6.36 Xorg 7.6 X server 1.9.2 Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller (fully accelerated by intel modules) When I boot up the system, it uses the integrated monitor (LVDS1) only, and I have to manually manually switch to the external monitor (VGA1) using xrandr. Is it possible to configure my Xorg (or whatever) so that it uses the VGA1 output if present?

• Any way to stop VMWare workstation from dropping SSH connections?

  I have VMWare workstation 8 with a few Linux guests. I have had problems maintaining an active SSH connection to my VMs when they are in bridged mode. I first read that the onboard realtek network cards were not well supported so I bought a Intel Pro/1000 GT card. This supposedly had support. But this made no difference. Connections via SSH are active for about the first 3 minutes then hang and die. I have changed the TCP Checksum offload on the Intel and Realtek NICs, but this only works some of the time and even then not for very long. The best I could do was about 20 minutes before the connection was dropped. Any ideas?

  2x Xeon E5620 . 16 Cores altogether. /proc/cpuinfo shows cache is only @ 4096kb According to intel this should have 12MB of "smart cache". • Wifi randomly drops on Windows 8 laptop

  First of all, I did a lot of research on this problem, and I wasn't able to come to any helpful conclusion. I've finally decided that I need advice from those who might know where to look. So don't let me down. :P I used to have an older Windows 7 laptop, which worked great for basic office and web browsing. However, I wanted something that would play actual modern games. So I recently bought a Sager NP8235 with the Intel Wireless-AC 7260 wifi card, and installed Windows 8 Pro on it. And ever since, I've been having problems with the wifi. Generally, what happens is if I leave the laptop on but inactive for an extended amount of time (I've estimated it around an hour to two), the wifi will start dropping randomly. If I happened to have a download going at the time, it usually causes the download to fail. Or, if I put the laptop to sleep overnight, the next morning I usually have to restart the computer because the wifi device apparently stops working (it literally won't turn on). Also, and most frustrating, whenever I'm on a video chat (like Skype), after about ten minutes, the connection will start lagging like crazy, until it forces Skype to end the call. After that, I usually have to disable and reenable the wifi to get it working again. I know it isn't our internet, because all the other computers in our house (~8) don't have any issues. Even the old Windows 7 laptop (connected also over wifi) works just fine, scoring the normal ~3Mbps average on speedtest.net (yes, I know our internet is slow, we live out in the country). Additionally, when I connect the Sager directly to the router via ethernet, the internet instantly starts working just great. Like I said, I've done a lot of googling to figure out what's going on, and I haven't been able to find anything that worked for me. Is it Windows 8 conflicting with the Wifi drivers? As of this writing, I have the Intel drivers v16.1.5.2 installed (without the extra Intel software). Or is it our router? It's a TP-Link TL-WR841ND, set to the default settings. The Sager is currently being assigned to a static IP, if that makes any difference. And yet, the old windows 7 laptop has a much more stable connection than the Sager. Anyone have any ideas? At this point, I'd appreciate even knowing what the problem is.

• Is it possible to use a dual processor computer as your desktop?

  I've seen some people suggesting to get a motherboard that supports two processors and stick two Xeon Nehalem processors in it. Could you use this system as a desktop PC or is this useless or even impossible? It's more hypothetical question if Windows 7 would support such a set-up. I know you could just take an i7, but wouldn't two of those processors be a whole lot more awesome? Like the previous generation Skulltrails? The idea would be to have a motherboard like this ASUS Z8NA-D6C Dual LGA 1366 Intel 5500 ATX and two Xeons (since I don't think i7's could be used) Intel Xeon E5405 Harpertown to run something like Windows 7 Ultimate.

Here is my issue: when I go to AMD/ATI website to update my graphics card - it doesn't. when I type DxDiag and then click on display it tell me my version is 8.17.0 and its on 10.10.0 for the latest version. How can I get 8.17.0 too 10.10.0? I figure it would have done that after I updated the driver for my graphics card. Thanks.

  Why does Windows 7 x64 work faster than an x86 edition on my PC even though I mostly use x86 things in it? What's wrong with me, and what am I missing? Majority of the things I use is x86 (e.g. DAWs, games, media players). A considerable amount of them, however, are x64 (although their x86 counterparts work just fine). I've tried using the same things on the same system but always ended up finding Windows 7 x64 working slightly faster than x86. I'm very observant. I even notice the tiniest window animations. • Mouse Hang with voltage fluctuation

  I bought a new assembled PC about a month ago, but for the past 7 or 8 days I found my mouse cursor hangs every time there is a voltage fluctuation on my UPS (I guess it as when sound comes from ups then mouse hang for 2 or 3 sec. and them it goes normal again). My PC also seems to shut down while I'm working and it refuses to boot again - I end up needing to switch off my UPS and press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. It will then boot as per normal. Could the trouble be with my PSU? Am I potentially damaging my computer by pressing and holding the power button?
