• Deploying Memcached as 32bit or 64bit?

  I'm curious about how people deploy memcached on 64 bit machines. Do you compile a 64bit (standard) memcached binary and run that, or do people compile it in 32bit mode and run N instances (where N = machine_RAM / 4GB)? Consider a recommended deployment of Redis (from the Redis FAQ): Redis uses a lot more memory when compiled for 64 bit target, especially if the dataset is composed of many small keys and values. Such a database will, for instance, consume 50 MB of RAM when compiled for the 32 bit target, and 80 MB for 64 bit! That's a big difference. You can run 32 bit Redis binaries in a 64 bit Linux and Mac OS X system without problems. For OS X just use make 32bit. For Linux instead, make sure you have libc6-dev-i386 installed, then use make 32bit if you are using the latest Git version. Instead for Redis <= 1.2.2 you have to edit the Makefile and replace "-arch i386" with "-m32". If your application is already able to perform application-level sharding, it is very advisable to run N instances of Redis 32bit against a big 64 bit Redis box (with more than 4GB of RAM) instead than a single 64 bit instance, as this is much more memory efficient. Would not the same recommendation also apply to a memcached cluster?

• C# Reading the registry and Wow6432Node key

  Hi all, I have come code that reads the registry and looks for a value in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\App\ but when running on 64bit versions of Windows the value is under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\App. How should I best approach this? Do I need a 64bit installer or should I rewrite my code to detect both places? Thanks

• Look Inside WebLogic Server Embedded LDAP with an LDAP Explorer

  Today a question came up on our internal WebLogic Server mailing lists about an issue deleting a Group from WebLogic Server.  The group had a special character in the name. The WLS console refused to delete the group with the message a java.net.MalformedURLException and another message saying “Errors must be corrected before proceeding.” as shown below. The group aa:bb is the one with the issue.  Click to enlarge. WebLogic Server includes an embedded LDAP server that can be used for managing users and groups for “reasonably small environments (10,000 or fewer users)”.  For organizations scaling larger or using more high-end features, I recommend looking at one of Oracle’s very popular enterprise directory services products like Oracle Internet Directory or Oracle Directory Server Enterprise Edition.  You can configure multiple authenicators in WebLogic Server so that you can use multiple directories at the same time. Follow the instructions here, being sure to change the authentication credentials to the Embedded LDAP server to some value you know, as by default they are some unknown value.  You’ll need to reboot the WebLogic Server Admin Server after making this change. Now configure JXplorer to connect as described in the documentation.  I’ve circled the important inputs.  In this example, my domain name is “hotspot_domain” which listens on the localhost listen address and port 7001.  The cn=Admin user name is a constant identifier for the Administrator of the embedded LDAP and that does not change, but you need to know what it is so you can enter it into the tool you use. Once you connect successfully, you can explore the entries and in this case delete the group that is no longer desired.

• Win 7: apps crash, then explorer crashes, then services fail, then boom

  Periodically, every 2-3 days one of my systems will go haywire: every app will crash search will fail via the start menu and then explorer will fail. Restarting explorer via taskmanager will cause it to fail again, then it'll BSOD and restart. The eventlog for when this happens goes something like this every time: ERROR: Session "ReadyBoot" stopped due to the following error: 0xC0000188 (supposedly not a problem) WARNING: The maximum file size for session "ReadyBoot" has been reached... (forget where I found out, but also 'not a problem') ERROR: Session "Circular Kernel Context Logger" stopped due to the following error: 0xC0000188 (again, supposedly not a problem) WARNING: The maximum file size for session "Circular Kernel Context Logger" has been reached... ERROR: Faulting application name: Explorer.EXE, version: 6.1.7600.16450, time stamp:... ERROR: Faulting application name: explorer.exe, version: 6.1.7600.16450, time stamp:... ERROR: Faulting application name: svchost.exe_iphlpsvc, version: 6.1.7600.16385, time stamp:... ERROR: The Service Name service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s) That last one happens a number of times but with a different service name. Then finally we have: ERROR: The Service Control Manager tried to take a corrective action (Restart the service) after the unexpected termination of the Server service, but this action failed with the following error: An instance of the service is already running. After that, I have my BSOD and logs complaining that windows started up without shutting down. It's a new machine: Intel i3 530 4gb RAM (Ran memtest for 4 hrs, no problems) 320GB WD/250GB Seagate HDDs (Happened on fresh installs on 2 separate HDDs) Win7 Pro/Ultimate x64 (wife's copy of pro, my copy of ult, no change) Fresh install + driver and windows update (happened without updates as well) I'm at a bit of a loss as to what I can look at next. Especially since it'll work like a charm for 2-3 days and then it's hooped for a night (I'm on it now in fact - no problems).

  A linux machine is connected to internet over two interfaces ppp0 and ppp1 using two modems. Also this machine acts as wireless access point through an interface say, eth0 with ip address 192.168.1.1 and acts as gateway for the connected devices through this network with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Now is it possible to achieve the following: When any of the connected devices through wireless AP needs internet connection linux machine has to use ppp1 interface for internet. If any of the applications on the linux machine needs internet connection linux machine should use ppp0 interface for the internet. Can this be achieved by adding rules to chains in filter/nat tables? If the kernel routing table has a default rule to route the default traffic through interface ppp0, wil kernel completely ignore ppp1 for internet? PS: new to networking and routing concepts, If the question is not clear leave a comment, will try to give more information.

• VirtualBox - Mac OSX host Win7 guest - no Internet access for guest VM

  I have a Mac running OSX 10.9.2, and I just downloaded and installed a Win7 IE9 VM in VirtualBox. My Mac uses Wi-Fi for internet access, and it's behind a proxy (it's a work machine). VirtualBox loads the VM fine, and at some point the VM can see the DNS servers of the host. But I've never been able to make the VM have internet access. I've tried all kinds of combinations of Network settings on the VM via the VirtualBox Settings, in conjunction with Internet Sharing in OSX's System Preferences, but no luck. Has anyone done a similar setup and made the VM successfully connect to the Internet? Thanks in advance for any inputs. [ Update: I was able to get internet access for the VM when the host was using my home network.   Do you remember. Some years ago, there was a huge virus attacking Windows XP in its first version. Once you had installed Windows XP, and on your first internet access, the virus installed itself on your computer, closing your internet connection and making the computer reboot after some seconds. I wonder... How can a virus install itslef this way from nowhere ? Without any user action. You install Windows XP... the computer just connects itself to the internet (assuming Microsoft don't connect to bad sites on its first connection)... and you have a virus. There is something magic I don't understand here. Can someone explain me how that virus could attack Windows that way, without any user action on a fresh installed system...

• Using Ubuntu with a dial-up connection

  Is it possible to install Ubuntu on a machine with only a dial-up connection? That is, does the Ubuntu install CD come with everything needed to set up an Internet connection using a dial-up modem (I have a USRobotics Courier V.Everything connected to a RS232 port on a Lava Quattro-PCI). I presently run CentOS (5.9), which does include support for dialup Internet access out-of-the-box (all of the modules for dialup are on the distro DVD). When I ran the UBuntu CD (12.04.1 desktop), there was no sign of dial-up Internet support. Am I faced with a chicken or egg problem?

• Windows XP Loading Problem

  Sometimes, my Windows XP does not load correctly. It shows the login screen, and when I click my username, it load the desktop background, but the Explorer does not show up. So, I cannot see the icons on the desktop, the start menu, etc. If I press Ctrl+Alt+Del to show Task Manager, I can run programs (like media player or browser) from File--New Task (Run...). Also, in the Task Manager, I see Explorer.exe running. I tried to kill and re-run it, but nothing happens. I used Sysinternals Process Explorer to see if there were any odd process or odd behavior, but nothing was fishy. After several restarts, the system finally worked as expected. But this is not permanent: Sometimes, when I restart the system, it works just as described above (Explorer does not show up). But sometimes it works normally. I used Kaspersky to search for viruses, but nothing showed up. I think the info presented above is not enough to pinpoint the problem. Yet you might be able to tell me about a tool or something, which I can use to give you more info, or even solve the problem. PS: I can easily use the Safe Mode. It does not seem to suffer from this problem. Hence, I suspect there's some process (service) for which Explorer is waiting, but that process runs into trouble (say a race ondition, or an infinite loop) and so Explorer stalls as well.

• Crash when attempting to install 32bit delphi service on 2008 r2

  I have an old 32bit delphi application (with no source code), that is used as a windows service. It runs fine on windows 2003 32bit. I do not know if it has been created as a service originally, or converted to one later on. It is supposed to get installed to the server using a /install flag on the command line. When attempting to install it on a Windows 2008 R2 virtual machine, I am getting an APPCRASH event in the event log. The service is supposed to read a blob from a remote SQL Server instance and write it out to the local HD. It also reads some initialization data from the registry. Is there any way I can install this application as a service on windows 2008 r2 64bit? If not, are there any workarounds I can try? What are your suggestions?

• MySQL my.cnf file not being read, Ubuntu 10.04 64bit

  I've been researching this for a few hours with no luck. Basically it looks like my server's my.cnf file isn't being read at all. I've searched my server, and there's only one my.cnf file on it, located at /etc/mysql/my.cnf. Its ownership is root:root. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 64bit on a Linode.com server. I have the latest versions of MySQL and PHP installed. I've edited the my.cnf file, commented out "skip-innodb", and have set innodb to be the default storage engine using default-storage-engine = innodb And then restarted mysql. But when I do show engines, MyISAM is still coming up as the default engine. Also - none of the innodb settings I've added to the my.cnf file are being read. For example, I have this in my.cnf: innodb_buffer_pool_size=4G But in phpmyadmin, InnoDB is showing as having a buffer pool size of 8,192 KiB. Similarly, I have this in the my.cnf: innodb_data-file_path = ibdata1:500M:autoextend But in phpmyadmin, it's reading as ibdata1:10M:autoextend. It doesn't look like MyISAM info is being read from the my.cnf file either. The my.cnf file has skip-external-locking queried out, but it's showing as "on" in phpmyadmin. So - yeah, it looks like nothing in the my.cnf file is being read at all. But the server still works. I'm running a Drupal site on it and it seems to operate fine. So mysql seems to be drawing default settings from... some mysterious secret location. Any idea how I can make mysql see and use this my.cnf file? Actually, wait - it looks like it may be being read, not sure. I checked the error.log and found this: 101128 4:28:52 [ERROR] Cannot find or open table databasename/cache_apachesolr from the internal data dictionary of InnoDB though the .frm file for the table exists. Maybe you have deleted and recreated InnoDB data files but have forgotten to delete the corresponding .frm files of InnoDB tables, or you have moved .frm files to another database? or, the table contains indexes that this version of the engine doesn't support. • IE8 Windows 7 (64bit) security certificate problem

  Hi, We have just received some new computers for use in the office (Dell Vostro). They seem to work fine in the main. When we use IE8 to go to some web pages such as yahoo mail it tells us: “There is a problem with this websites security certificate” If we have a look at the details it says: “This certificate cannot be verified up to a trusted certification authority” This however works correctly in Firefox. I don't understand why I should get such an error message, should this not just work? I don't think its anything to do with the certificate itself as this is happening on www.yahoo.co.uk and other commercial (amazon I think?) sites. I think there is something off with the PCs setup. The PC has Windows 7 (64 bit) and Norton Internet Security installed. Any ideas as to why this is happening? Thanks

  I'm having errors with java left and right, normal java works just fine. It's things that use the internet for certificates and java .jnpl. I've tried Minecraft classic, it gives me a error, canirunit, error, Carnegie learning, error. I've switched browsers and still have these errors. everything is broken I've turned on ask me for unsigned certificates instead of blocking it and it doesn't pop-up. • Windows Explorer view style via GPO or registry edit

  I'm having some difficulty adjusting the default view style in windows explorer (e.g. list, detail, large icon, small icon). There does not seem to be any pre-baked GPOs for this and next to no documentation on the subject outside of using GUI configuration tools built into windows explorer. Does anyone know the specific registry keys that need to be edited for this? I've already taken a look at HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams\Settings but the adjustments I've made there don't seem to make any change on their own.

  I am using Windows 7 and I am looking for a list of the different parameters to use in the Target line of a shortcut in Windows Explorer. For example: /n forces it to open a new window, even if it duplicates a window that is already open. /e uses Windows Explorer view (multi-paned) /root,X restricts Explorer to showing only the contents of file folder X (and its sub-folders) /select,Y automatically selects Y (either a file or folder). What other parameters exist? I have been searching online and cannot find anything.

• Win 7 Explorer backup and long paths

  I use Explorer to do backups because Win 7's backup program asks me to take backups previously done and to put them back in the drive. I am opposed to that idea since I believe backups should remain in storage. With Explorer backups (burn and burn to disc) I have encountered the "destination path too long" error message and it shows the name of a folder "Debug" three times. I have hundreds of folders named "Debug" thanks to Visual Studio. At this moment I'm too angry at Microsoft to write a program to determine my 3 longest paths. (Aside: This is all after coincidentally reading two articles about path junctions earlier this evening which already made me kind of unhappy.) Please, is there an easy way to continue to make backups with Explorer? Edit: I should add that renaming paths wrecks Visual Studio projects so I really need to isolate the small number of problem paths or find a cleaner solution.

  I get daily critical errors from Kaspersky involving Explorer.exe... The file in question is almost always in the Recycle Bin, or something on the desktop. • Can't drag files from Explorer into Notepad++ running as administrator on Windows 8

  If I have Notepad++ running as administrator, I can't drag files from explorer on to it (they are rejected with the 'stop' cursor) and if I try to use the explorer extension right click 'Edit with Notepad++' it throws an error. Opening the files using the Notepad++ 'Open' dialog, or even double clicking them in Explorer works as it should. (Note double clicking is not a solution as very few of the files I want to open are default to Notepad++) I have UAC set to 'never notify'. Using the hack where UAC 'admin approval mode' is disabled fixes the issue, but kills the ability to use Metro apps.

  Ok i'm currently using LuaScript v5.1 in a Game engine i'm using. and the handy LuaInterface that comes along with it. i've tested it on a range of systems running a range of OS's. LuaInterface seems to fail on 64bit Operating Systems. Could anyone point me to a 64bit Compiled LuaInterface.dll, or is there any alternative to the LuaInterface that can be used, because LuaInterface is extremely useful and i dont think i would be able to write a more extensive interface by myself using lua51.   Hi, here is the situation, i'm developping a Browser Helper Object (BHO) in C++ with Visual Studio 2008, and i learned that the memory wasn't managed the same way in Debug mode than in Release mode. So when i run my BHO in debug mode, internet explorer 8 works just fine and i got no erros at all, the browser stays alive forever, but as soon as i compile it in release mode, i got no errors, no message, nothing, but after 5 minutes i can see through the task manager that internet explorer instances are just eating memory and then the browser just stop responding every time. Please, I really need some hint on how to get a feedback on what could be the error. I heard that, often it was happening because of memory mismanagement. I need a software that just grab a memory dump or something when iexplorer crashes to help me find the problem. Any help is appreciated, I'll be looking for responses every single days, thank you.

  I have a dll that comes in both 32bit and 64bit version. My .NET WinForm is configured for "Any CPU" and my boss will not let us have separate installs for the different OS versions. So I am wondering: if I package both dlls in the install, then is there a way to have the WinForm determine if its 64bit/32bit and load the proper dll. I found this article for determining version. But i am not sure how to inject the proper way to define the DLLImport attribute on the methods i wish to use. Any ideas?
