• COM port - how to identify a device (.net/c#)

  Hi, I'm programming for Windows CE and I need to connect to a scanner. There is no problem - I know that it is on port COM0, but if I plug in another device earlier it gets another COM port... to get all com ports the easy way is: SerialPort.GetPortNames() But I don't know how to identify a device? Is there any standard way? I can't 'ping' it since there is one device that only sends data... it spams data all the time... and I don't know how to 'ping' a device...

  i would like a single alias (ts) which starts my local development server. the script should test for an open port starting at 3000 and use the first available port. additionally, some sites require a rackup file, making -R config.ru necessary. this script should check the current directory for the config.ru file and add that to the alias if present. currently, to start my local development environment, i run: alias ts="thin -R config.ru -p 3000 start" often, i need to run several servers to test different sites, so i've created additional aliases: alias ts1="thin -R config.ru -p 3001 start"

• PHP can't connect to localhost XMPP server on port 5222

  I've set up an ejabberd install locally on my Windows box, where I also have Apache, PHP and MySQL. I've also confirmed that it works great using Digsby, and have kicked the tires a bit by creating some users, sending some messages, etc. All good. However, PHP can't open a stream using stream_socket_client to port 5222. Even at its simplest level: stream_socket_client("tcp://localhost:5222", $errno, $errstr, 30, STREAM_CLIENT_CONNECT); Returns a timeout error. However, again, connecting with an IM client to localhost on port 5222 works fine. Any ideas? I'm stuck!

  Hi All, I use eclipse to develop a web based java application. My normal course of business is grab the next task tracking ticket. If there is a problem that needs to correcting, I run the application locally, which loads of a Jetty webserver, and binds to port 8080. After verifying the problem, I fix the problem, rebuild, and the re-run the application. The problem is, I far too often forget to close the jetty server before re-running. This generates the Java bind error: WARNING: failed [email protected]:8080: java.net.BindException: Address already in use: JVM_Bind I work in Windows, and was looking to see if there is command I could run to un-bind the port, but couldn't find an answer there. Does anyone here have a good idea of how to fix my problem, other than remember to shut down the old jetty instance before starting a new one? Thanks, Jay

  I want to use auto-completion in a number of fields (5-7) in my forms. There is a screencast on auto-completion with Prototype library by Ryan Bates ( http://railscasts.com/episodes/102-auto-complete-association). On the other hand, I have noticed that quite many guys suggest jQuery for this task ( http://jquery.bassistance.de/autocomplete/demo/). And I guess, there was probably some development last year(s), so I ask you - what would you use nowadays to auto-complete your form fields and why? • C++ serial port send command

  Hi there, I have a hardware here, wich communicates over serial port. I use MS Visual C++ 2010, and I want to send a command: <-S-> I am doing this: SerialPort^ serialPort = gcnew SerialPort(portName , 9600, Parity::None, 8, StopBits::One); serialPort->Open(); serialPort->WriteLine("<-S->"); serialPort->Close(); But the command that goes out is <-S->., and not <-S-> (please notice the point that is attached to the outgoing command). I use Free Serial Port Monitor to watch my ingoing/outcoming data. So how can I get rid of that point in <-S->. ? This is what is going out: 3C 2D 53 2D 3E 0A = <-S-. • Linux script to kill process listening on a particular port

  I have a process that listens on a TCP port (?0003). From time to time it crashes - badly. It stops working, but continues hogging the port for some time, so I can't even restart it. I'm looking to automate this. What I do right now is: netstat -ntlp |grep -P "\*\:\d0003" To see what the PID is and then: kill -9 <pid> Does anyone have a script (or EXE for that matter) that would link the two steps together, ie. parse the PID from the first command and pass it to the second?

  hello, using XMLHttpRequest it is not possible to open a connection to a document on a different domain than where the page itself is hosted. but what about different ports? for example i have a webserver running on my machine listening on port 80 so the webaddress would look like this: http://localhost:80/mypage.html and i have another webserver running on localhost which is meant to process the ajax requests but listens on a different port. so the javascript in mypage.html would look like this: var xmlhttprequest = new XMLHttpRequest(); xmlhttp.open("GET", "http://localhost:1234/?parameters", true); xmlhttp.send(); would this work? or will it give a security exception as well?

  In PHP, is there a reliable and good way of getting these things: Protocol: i.e. http or https Servername: e.g. localhost Portnumber: e.g. 8080 I can get the server name using $_SERVER['SERVER_NAME']. I can kind of get the protocol but I don't think it's perfect: if(strtolower(substr($_SERVER["SERVER_PROTOCOL"],0,5))=='https') { return "https"; } else { return "http"; } I don't know how to get the port number though.   One of gen_servers in my app call gen_tcp:listen(Port, [{active, true}]). First time I run unit test, it returns {ok, Socket}, but second time I run the same unit test, it returns an {error, eaddrinuse}, but lsof -i TCP returns nothing. Also, when the same unit_test is run twice on another machine (WinXP), it works as expected (that is, returns {ok, Socket} both times). Therefore, my gen_server obviously releases the port, but Erlang somehow doesn't know that. So, how can I figure out who does Erlang think uses this address?

  I wrote an application in WPF / VB and separated the business logic and UI into different projects. The business layer uses a serial port which runs on a different thread, Now that I'm trying to write a command line interface for the same business layer, it seems to fail when .Invoke() is called. (no error, just doesn't work) I'm pretty sure the reason I had to add in checkaccess and .invoke was because I have collections that would be changed during processing the serial port data and wanted the NotifyCollectionChanged to be handled by WPF data binding. (The reason I'm not 100% sure is because it was months ago I wrote that part and it all worked great from the GUI, now adding the console app has made me rethink some of this) I would like my business layer to run these processes on the thread they were created, I need this to work from both my GUI version and the command line version. Am I misusing the Dispatcher in my business layer? Is there a better way to handle an event from the serial port, and then return to the main thread to processes the data?

  I am trying to fork() and exec() a new python script process from within a Django app that is running in apache2/WSGI Python. The new python process is daemonized so that it doesn't hold any association to apache2, but I know the HTTP ports are still open. The new process kills apache2, but as a result the new python process now holds port 80 and 443 open, and I don't want this. How do I close port 80 and 443 from within the new python process? Is there a way to gain access to the socket handle descriptors so they can be closed?

• Reduce the I/O priority of Windows Backup (Windows Server 2008 R2)

  I have a PostgreSQL running on Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 box. And I have scheduled a backup everyday from the RAID 1 DB disk to a dedicated standalone disk. They are SAS 15k on Dell PERC 6i. I am using the built-in Windows Server Backup for purpose. The problem is, whenever the backup process is kicked in, the database performance is hogged. I would say almost a 10x of performance reduction. From the resource monitor, the disk queue is in the double digit range when backing up, and less than 1 during the day. The disk activity is like ~30-50MB/s during backup, so I guess the hardware is acting normally, though wbengine.exe takes up most of the portions. I think reduce the IO priority of the backup process would be an answer, but I couldn't find a way to. Tuning process CPU priority does not seems to help.

• Large file copy from NFS to local disk performance drop

  I'm trying to copy a 200GB file from an NFS mount to a local disk. The local disk is an XFS filesystem on a LVM on top of a RAID 5 system (hardware RAID controler). I'm using rsync to monitor the transfer speed. At the beginning the IO speed is about 200MB/s, stable for the first 18GB. But then the performance drops by a factor of 10-20 and never recovers to the initial rate. Sometimes it reaches about 50-100MB/s but just for a few seconds and then the process seems to hang for a bit. At the same time all file-stat operations on the target filesystem are blocking for a long time (minutes). Also interrupting the copy process blocks for several minutes, a sub-sequent delete of the partly copied file takes also several minutes. Any ideas what could be causing this?

  I like to have best io performance as well as good capaciyy and reliability out of a server that hosts a busy forum, which involves loads of static files download. I am wondering what is the best plan to format and use the disks given that the server has only 4 disk bays and I have 2 SSD and 2 SATA disks at hand. I am currently thinking about putting the disks in RAID 10 so that SSD contains /var/lib/mysql as well as most of the OS (Likely to be Debian) and SATA disk to contain /path/to/static/files. However I'd like to hear your expert opinion on this. Thanks

• Should I store my code/projects on my SSD or my secondary drive?

  I just got a new box. It has an SSD for the primary drive, and a 1TB SATA for the secondary drive. I'm going to run windows and my binaries on the SSD and keep all my downloads/documents/music/etc on the secondary drive. My question is should I also keep my Visual Studio Projects and code on the SSD or keep them on the secondary drive? The faster SSD would presumably be better for compiling and indexed searches, but would it be better to keep it on the 2nd drive for a more parallel disk IO situation?

  I've got a Bind 9 DNS server sitting behind a NAT firewall, assume the Internet facing IP is 1.2.3.4 There are no restrictions on outgoing traffic, and port 53 (TCP/UDP) is forwarded from 1.2.3.4 to the internal DNS server (10.0.0.1). There are no IP Tables rules on either the VPS or the internal Bind 9 server. From a remote Linux VPS located elsewhere on the internet, nslookup works fine # nslookup foo.example.com 1.2.3.4 Server: 1.2.3.4 Address: 1.2.3.4#53 Name: foo.example.com Addresss: 9.9.9.9 However, when using the host command on the remote VPS, I receive the following output: # host foo.example.com 1.2.3.4 ;; reply from unexpected source: 1.2.3.4#13731, expected 1.2.3.4#53 ;; reply from unexpected source: 1.2.3.4#13731, expected 1.2.3.4#53 ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached. • Continual "The Windows Filtering Platform has blocked a connection" errors?

  Our systems have been compromised by something recently which has lead us to carry out a more detailed look at what is happening on our workstations. I have noticed an issue where the Security log of this Windows 7 workstation is continually logging a security "Audit Failure" where the detail is that "The Windows Filtering Platform has blocked a connection". This is happening thousands of times a day and would appear to be our BT Business Broadband HGV 2700 ADSL router attempting to connect to Port 137 (NET Bios) on my workstation and being blocked. This has unfortunately had the effect of filling up the log files so much that anything which might have been of use which was logged over the weekend to help debug the intrusion has been "overwritten off the end" of the Security log. (I've since increased the log file size limits massively and turned on archiving). Does anyone know if this is standard behaviour of a BT ADSL router or whether this indicates that the router is compromised in some way or malfunctioning, or have any further suggestions as to how to diagnose this problem?
