  • Use LINQ to count the number of combinations existing in two lists

    I'm trying to create a LINQ query (or queries) that count the total number of occurences of a combinations of items in one list that exist in a different list. For example, take the following lists: CartItems DiscountItems ========= ============= AAA AAA AAA BBB AAA BBB BBB CCC CCC DDD The result of the query operation should be 2 since I can find two combinations of AAA and BBB (from DiscountItems) within the contents of CartItems. My thinking in approaching the query is to join the lists together to shorten CartItems to only include items from DiscountItems. The solution would be to find the CartItem in the resulting query that occurs the least amount of times, thus indicating how many combinations of items exist in CartItems. How can this be done? Here's the query I already have, but it's not working. query results in an enumeration with 100 items, far more than I expected.   • PHP/MySQL: Check if something 'belongs-to' something else?

    I have two tables: Stores and Items. The relationship is: Stores 1---* Items In PHP/MySQL what would be the best (fastest/simplest) way to check if a particular item belongs to a particular store. In other words given for example: $store_id = 1; $item_id = 12; I want to check if item 12 belongs to store 1 (and not some other store). I usually do a select on Items matching both the store_id and item_id and limit the results to 1. Then check how many rows (0 or 1) were returned with mysql_num_rows. Is there a better way? Update: Both tables have an "id" column. The Items table has a "store_id" column.

  • Which is better Java programming practice: stacking enums and enum constructors, or subclassing?

    Hi folks, Given a finite number of items which differ in kind, is it better to represent them with stacked enums and enum constructors, or to subclass them? Or is there a better approach altogether? To give you some context, in my small RPG program (which ironically is supposed to be simple), a character has different kinds of items in his or her inventory. Items differ based on their type and use and effect. For example, one item of inventory is a spell scroll called Gremlin that adjusts the Utility attribute. Another item might be a sword called Mort that is used in combat and inflicts damage. In my RPG code, I now have tried two ways of representing inventory items. One way was subclassing (for example, InventoryItem - Spell - AdjustingAttributes; InventoryItem - Weapon - Sword) and instantiating each subclass when needed, and assigning values such as names like Gremlin and Mort. The other way was by stacking enums and enum constructors. For example, I created enums for itemCategory and itemSpellTypes and itemWeaponTypes, and the InventoryItem enum was like this: public enum InventoryItem { GREMLIN(itemType.SPELL, itemSpellTypes.ATTRIBUTE, Attribute.UTILITY), MORT(itemType.WEAPON, itemWeaponTypes.SWORD, 30); InventoryItem(itemType typeOfItem, itemSpellTypes spellType, Attribute attAdjusted) { // snip, enum logic here } InventoryItem(itemType typeOfItem, itemWeaponTypes weaponType, int dmg) { // snip, enum logic here } // and so on, for all the permutations of items. } Is there a better Java programming practice than these two approaches?     Hi, I have a bunch of items – for simplicity reasons – a flat table with unique names seeded via bulk insert: create table #items ( ItemName NVARCHAR(255) ) The database has this structure: create table Statements ( Id INT IDENTITY NOT NULL, Version INT not null, FurtherDetails varchar(max) null, ProposalDateTime DATETIME null, UpdateDateTime DATETIME null, ProposerFk INT null, UpdaterFk INT null, primary key (Id) ) create table Item ( StatementFk INT not null, ItemName NVARCHAR(255) null, primary key (StatementFk) ) Here Item is a child of Statement (inheritance). I would like to insert items in #items using a set based approach (avoiding triggers and loops). Can this be achieved with OUTPUT in my scenario. A ‘loop based’ approach is just too slow where I use something like this: insert into Statements (Version, FurtherDetails, ProposalDateTime, UpdateDateTime, ProposerFk, UpdaterFk) VALUES (1, null, getdate(), getdate(), @user_id, @user_id) etc. This is a start for the OUTPUT based approach – but I am not sure whether this would work in my case as ItemName is only inserted into Item: insert into Statements ( Version, FurtherDetails, ProposalDateTime, UpdateDateTime, ProposerFk, UpdaterFk ) output inserted.Id ... ???   • Is it possible to use Sphinx search with dynamic conditions?

    In my web app I need to perform 3 types of searching on items table with the following conditions: items.is_public = 1 (use title field for indexing) - a lot of results can be retrieved(cardinality is much higher than in other cases) items.category_id = {X} (use title + private_notes fields for indexing) - usually less than 100 results items.user_id = {X} (use title + private_notes fields for indexing) - usually less than 100 results I can't find a way to make Sphinx work in all these cases, but it works well in 1st case. Should I use Sphinx just for the 1st case and use plain old "slow" FULLTEXT searching in MySQL(at least because of lower cardinality in 2-3 cases)? Or is it just me and Sphinx can do pretty much everything?

    I have a Listbox displaying 5 items at a time, horizontally. I want to implement a 'Previous' and 'Next' button that when clicked, will display the previous set of 5, or next set of 5 items. I am not displaying the horizontal scroll bar, as I don't want a user to navigate with that. Is there already some functionality implemented so I can do this, or do I need to write code to calculate what items I'm displaying, etc, in the button's click events? Thanks in advance!

  • Out of memory when creating a lot of objects C#

    I'm processing 1 million records in my application, which I retrieve from a MySQL database. To do so I'm using Linq to get the records and use .Skip() and .Take() to process 250 records at a time. For each retrieved record I need to create 0 to 4 Items, which I then add to the database. When running the application (and not even using dataContext) the memory increases consistently. It's like the items are never getting disposed. Does anyone notice what I'm doing wrong?   • Display/Hide part of a list

    Hi I have an (unordered)list (generated by a repeater) of items. However, I'd like to show the first three items, and have the rest hidden by the main content div. When a button is pressed, I would like the list's div to expand, pushing the main content div down and showing the rest of the list. I was thinking of using slideDown(), but that closes the entire div ( and I would like to show the first 3 items of the list). What would be the best way to achieve an effect like this? Is there a plugin that can easily show X items of a list and the display the rest upon request? Thanks

    I have a list of items in a generic list: A1 (sort index 1) A2 (sort index 2) B1 (sort index 3) B2 (sort index 3) B3 (sort index 3) The comparator on them takes the form: this.sortIndex.CompareTo(other.sortIndex) When I do a List.Sort() on the list of items, I get the following order out: A1 A2 B3 B2 B1 It has obviously worked in the sense that the sort indexes are in the right order, but I really don't want it to be re-ordering the 'B' items. Is there any tweak I can make to my comparator to fix this?

    I've got a Container with a header, content (Carousel) and a footer. The Container itself is therefor scrollable (vertical) to be able to scroll down to the footer. The Carousel can be swiped horizontally to change active item. I want to lock it to do only two thing: If starting to move vertically, only scroll Container If starting to move horizontally, only scroll Carousel If you now grab the Carousel you are able to scroll both ways at the same time.   • Why am I getting a EXC_BAD_ACCESS in a NSTimer selector?

    I've got quite a weird problem. To make it short, i'll write some pseudo-code: init: create a dictionary and insert n elements. create a "repeat timer" and add it to the currentRunLoop using the timerRefresh selector. timerRefresh: using a list of keys, find the items in the dictionary if the item exists -> call a function So, for an unknown reason, I get an EXC_BAD_ACCESS when I do: [item function]; But I traced the address I got from the dictionary items and it's ok. The ref count of the items in the dictionary is still 1. The {release, dealloc} of the items in the dictionary aren't called. Everything seems fine. Also, to make it worst, it works for some items. So, I'm wondering if there is a threading problem? or something else obscure?     Sorry for the poor title, I couldn't think how to concisely describe this problem. I have a set of items that should have a 1-to-1 relationship with an attribute. I have a query to return those rows where the data is wrong and this relationship has been broken (1-to-many). I'm gathering these rows to fix them and restore this 1-to-1 relationship. This is a theoretical simplification of my actual problem but I'll post example table schema here as it was requested. item table: +------------+------------+-----------+ | item_id | name | attr_id | +------------+------------+-----------+ | 1 | BMW 320d | 20 | | 1 | BMW 320d | 21 | | 2 | BMW 335i | 23 | | 2 | BMW 335i | 34 | +------------+------------+-----------+ attribute table: +---------+-----------------+------------+ | attr_id | value | parent_id | +---------+-----------------+------------+ | 20 | SE | 21 | | 21 | M Sport | 0 | | 23 | AC | 24 | | 24 | Climate control | 0 | .... | 34 | Leather seats | 0 | +---------+-----------------+------------+ A simple query to return items with more than one attribute. SELECT item_id, COUNT(DISTINCT(attr_id)) AS attributes FROM item GROUP BY item_id HAVING attributes > 1 This gets me a result set like so: +-----------+------------+ | item_id | attributes | +-----------+------------+ | 1 | 2 | | 2 | 2 | | 3 | 2 | -- etc. -- However, there's an exception. The attribute table can hold a tree structure, via parent links in the table. For certain rows, parent_id can hold the ID of another attribute. There's only one level to this tree. I do not want to retrieve items in my original query where, for a pair of associated attributes, they related like attributes 20 & 21.   • Very simple shopping cart, remove button

    Im writing sales software that will be walking through a set of pages and on certain pages there are items listed to sell and when you click buy it basically just passes a hidden variable to the next page to be set as a session variable, and then when you get to the end it call gets reported to a database. However my employer wanted me to include a shopping cart, and this shopping cart should display the item name, sku, and price of whatever you're buying, as well as a remove button so the person doing the script doesnt need to go back through the entire thing to remove one item. At the moment I have the cart set to display everything, which was fairly simple. but I cant figure out how to get the remove button to work.     I've made a simple Javascript code for a shopping basket but now I have realised that I have made a error with making it and don't know how to fix it.   • jquery toggle+paginate+multiple instances

    Hi, I'm a jquery newbie - wanted to ask what might be the best strategy for achieving what I am after as I think it uses a mix of jquery functions : If list of items exceeds 5 items a 'more' link appears which when toggled will reveal the rest of the items. If items list is 5 or less no 'more' link is shown. Hide button also at bottom of long full revealed list. (perhaps this is toggle+pagination?) And then also that this can be used in multiple instances, as it is for multiple category menu's.(to be used in typical indexhibit websites structure like http://mikeyburton.com/) link 1 link 2 link 3 link 4 link 5 link 6 link 7 link 8 more Any help or links greatly appreciated.
